    Thanks Dave for another great video. I use for my action to invoke a Nik-Filter the following steps (just as a suggestion):
    - Merge visible layers
    - Move the new layer on top of the layer stack
    - Convert it to a Smart Object
    - Add the related menu item (i.e. NIK Color FX 5)

    Thank you very much for the instructional video and for the nice addition in the form of the Nick Collection5 action, for the busy grandfather who currently deals with photo processing on a casual basis, and even less often with taking them. I try to watch your films on an ongoing basis, because they give me a large dose of knowledge in a nutshell and inspire me to further work. I wish you a lot of health, perseverance and good light. As usual, I greet from Poland from the city of "Fortress Przemyśl". Ps. I am using your promotion and advice and currently listening to Sean Bagshaw Lesson Translator to deepen my knowledge of Photoshop and working with it. I am very grateful to you for these advice, because they allow me and your films to deepen my photographic workshop in the field of color and IR photography, which also captivated me.

    Dear Dave,
    thank you very much for your effort and thank you for creating the actions for us as well. They work absolutely without any problems! The only thing that does not work properly is the result of HDR Effex. Here I get as a result an image that consists of jumbled squares. However, this also happens when I run HDR Effex directly from Photoshop.
    BTW: I use Photoshop without Rosetta on a Mac mini M1.

    Dave, I cannot delete the “temp” layer. All I get is “delete current layer”. Not sure what you means by using left mouse button to delete, exactly. The action does not show the temp layer. So when dragging temp layer to trash, what am I doing wrong. Have tried it numerous times, so not sure. I am working with Topaz Collections and eventually Photon AI. Maybe when that is out of Beta you could revisit this tutorial for that collection as well as Studio 2. Thanks so much. Not sure where I am going wrong.

  • @StephenEhrlichPhotos

    Great tip. Since the NIK collection can be used as Smart Filters, would it make sense to add a step to convert the new layer into a Smart Object? This makes the NIK filter editable. Your tips and tricks are always awesome and helpful. Thanks Dave!

    • @stevedirector4644
      @stevedirector4644 2 роки тому

      I also think this would be a great alternative if it can be done. I have always used Nik on a smart layer exactly for the reason Stephen says as I have found that on more than one occasion I wanted to make subsequent adjustments - especially when I use Silver Efex. I would be very interested to see if this can be achieved by modifying your Nik actions.

    • @datstheone1
      @datstheone1 2 роки тому

      A word of caution about using NIK filters on smart layers if you want to revisit images several months or years in future. Recent updates to NIK have changed the interfaces so they no longer work from smart layers that were set up with earlier versions. To make matters worse installing one version of NIK removes any existing versions, so can't keep NIK 4 and NIK 5 on same system. A lot of people had big problems when they hit this when NIK 4 came out.

    • @stevedirector4644
      @stevedirector4644 2 роки тому

      Great point David! I really had not thought of that. But when I want to revisit and modify a NIK filter it happens during the initial processing phase or a few days or weeks later. But to you point, can't you simply rasterized the smart layer and be no worse off it you have not used the smart feature in the first place?

    • @datstheone1
      @datstheone1 2 роки тому

      @@stevedirector4644 Yes, that should work and is probably the sensible way to use smart layers for any third party filter once you are satisfied with settings, just have to remember to do it as part of workflow. Not just an issue with NIK, in Mac world covers the issue of filters not being converted to Apple silicon and not running if using Photoshop native.

    Another Great Video Dave!!! I created some Actions and TK8 makes it so easy to access them now - I love it. But I have a question I noticed that you have the Topaz Denoise, Sharpen AI etc as Actions as well. When I try to create them, and I select them from the Filter Tab - It makes me cancel or save it from Topaz. When I do this - The Action saves that setting. So, when I run the Action - it automatically selects the same setting as before and closes Topaz without letting me choose another one. What am I doing wrong?

      Thanks Steve for calling this to my attention. I checked my Nik Actions and have the same issue. I think it is due to the new update, which is a shame. I have since rethought about the actions and I decided that using the Nik Selective Tool made more sense. I set my Nik Selective Tool to not be shown at the startup of Photoshop. I made an action that opens up the Nik Selective Tool whenever I need it. I guess I could go and create new actions for the new update but then the next update will probably cause them not to work again. The Nik Selective Tool gives us the added benefit of opening up our favorite filters and presets which can save some time. I don't think you are doing anything wrong Wolfgang. The problem is with the new NIK Collection update, my NIK Actions do not work either. I do have an action for the NIK Selective tool which I have been using. I shut off the NIK Selective Tool in the preferences of the NIK Selective Tool and I use this action whenever I need to use NIK and I think it even makes more sense than the actions. When you use this action it will bring up the NIK Selective Tool and you can go open the Nik Collection and also presets or any filters that you have favorited. So I tried to put it to work following (very carefully) each step of the process you presented us, but considering the version of Color Efex I have installed in my system. Well, it didn't work. I'll try to describe what is happening when i run the action up to the point before the action deletes the layer "_Temp NIK Layer_": new layer ("_Temp NIK Layer_") is created and all layers are merged into this new layer. Then the plug-in is launched and I choose one of the effects and apply it. Well, when returning to Photoshop, the plugin doesn't create your layer. Could it be any compatibility issue? Sorry for the long text. I'm trying to understand what is happening.
    By the way, even if it won't work for my case, I'd like to thank you, Mr. Kelly. It's always a pleasure to watch your tutorials, especially the ones in TK8 series.
    Best regards from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.

      Thanks Paulo. I am sure it would be a compatibility issue.

      @@pauloricardoferreira2841 That might be the problem. Based on conversation with other Windows users, Mac and Windows work differently with regard to the Nik filters. Try this: Delete or uncheck the last step in each of Dave's Actions. This is the step that deletes the "extra" layer that was created. In Windows, this layer might actually be needed since Nik doesn't create a new layer for the effect like what happens on Mac. Windows uses the "temp" layer that the action creates to actually create and store the Nik filter effect. So, if the action deletes that layer, then the filter's effect is also deleted. By deleting or unchecking that last step in Dave's actions, the Nik filter will be retained on the Layers panel in the "temp" layer created by the action. At least, I think it works this way based on a conversation with a Windows user. I don't have the most recent Nik filters so cannot test this.

    thanks for the lesson, Dave; but why that work for to open nik software? when instead it's so easy and fast to clic in psd : FILTER /NiK /ViVEZA (or any other)
    truly VERY BORiNG with Nik is that, being a great photo software, it doesn't work with the much faster psd version to M1 processors 🥵..... we need to close psd /go to finder /choose psd /open properties /choose Rosetta /open again psd /and work with it much slower .... A GREAT REASON NOT USE Nik if we have M1 computers ---- all softwares made M1 versions, but not Nik ....

      I like working with the My Channels panel because everything is right out in the open and organized. Thanks for that info about the Mi . I have an Intel iMac and hopefully it will last a few years more.

      Sorry, but this is not true. The current NIK Collection runs without problems and without Rosetta on my Mac Mini M1 as Photoshop plugin.

      In the latest release of NIK, and I think the one before, the actual filter/plugin files that run in Photoshop to call the actual applications do seem to have been converted to run native on Apple silicon systems and so can be called from Photoshop when it is running Native. However the actual applications are still identified as Intel in the System Report. So I am not having to run Photoshop in Rosetta on my M1 iMac to run NIK filters even if these themselves are not making full use of the power of Apple silicon.
