    What I like and admire is that you, as a seller/dealer, are advising people to be realistic about what they can/cannot afford and not let themselves be influenced by others and the media we access. This care-filled honest advice come rant shows integrity. That's extra valuable coming from you as someone who relies on selling. I hope we all take this to heart. Many thanks.

    I have a technique where if I feel like I just HAVE to get a certain watch I will get all the videos and pics I can and spend about 2-3 weeks looking at them EVERY DAY.
    usually by the end of week 3 the NEED disappears, NOT ALWAYS, but usually. If the NEED is still there I will go for it.
    But all my purchases are from a watch fund that I am building by reselling watches, as I decided none of my watches can cost my family or me my personal money ever since my daughter was born.
    That way I never feel guilt for buying a watch as it never has ANY connection with my financial situation. I wasn't always like that and I even used to get watches in installments as I couldn't afford them at once, but I came to my senses and managed to get a positive balance in the watch fund and repay all previous purchases 😊

    I love that you are saying this. Bluntly & honestly, don't hurt your day to day budget to buy a watch.
    Like any hobby, R.C. cars, musical instruments, golfing, etc....
    If you have to reduce your food budget to afford that new effects peddle , or if you have to pay rent a week late to pick up that new set of clubs... DON'T DO IT!

    Definitely needed to hear this. Lately I've been guilty of scaling back my hobbies and other spending JUST so I can save as much money as possible each month for a watch purchase. And it really is irrational. What's the point of saving all my money for watches when I don't go out and enjoy them? Why have a dive watch collection if I don't want to spend the money to go diving? It's crazy, but like you said, super common. Great video.
    As far as the #QOTD: Silver Snoopy Speedmaster. At the current going rate of ~$13,000 I don't think I could ever afford it otherwise!

  • @adamrassi3516
    @adamrassi3516 5 років тому

    Hey, Christian. I have listed to many of your rants and this one by far felt so genuine and refreshing considering your age and as an owner of a business that sells watches. You have such a great message. You should revisit it in a recent video. Just noticed this is from '06 lol. TBH, I have yet to do business with you because I am not yet in the financial position to spend any amount of money on a new watch. But when I do, your shop will be where I pick up my first vintage.
    I have never been one to take advice. I don't think I am above advice at all. Just most advice is terrible and given without consideration of the person whom it is given to. With that said, I was given a piece of advice from my aunt that stuck with me from an early age and that is, "There are only a few things in life worth financing: a home, cars, and education. The rest, have patience and save for them." She told me this during a conversation about how interest can add up so quickly and make things cost sometimes 3x the original cost because the credit card that the purchase was made on's balance is never paid in full. I took that advice very seriously and have never held any balance on a credit card. But what about my credit score, I hear someone saying right about now. I worked for a credit bureau for the better part of a decade and know for sure that it only takes 6 months to establish a credit score north of 720 and the means to do so. And while I have crushing student loan debt, I know I have eased the strain on my mental health resisting the temptation to buy on credit. There is an unmistaken additional reward to purchase when I have saved the exact amount and get to make my purchase. This means that the most expensive watch I have ever owned is a Hamilton Khaki Field, which I love. Sure, someday I'll save enough to pull the trigger on the Pasha Seatimer and Roadster Chronograph from Cartier that I have been drooling over for years now. The best part, I won't be paying a dime over what the initial price I negotiate and, at least for me, will allow me to enjoy the watch as is. It made me so happy to hear you echo a similar philosophy and I hope your video has helped your viewers make the same choice.
    Sorry about the long comment but I hope future views of this rant will read my case study on your topic and find value in the idea. I hope all is well with you and the rest of the watch fam over there and I look forward to more videos to come!

    Completely agree Christian, great video! The amount of times I've heard on Hodinkees Talking Watches "If you wanna call yourself a collector you gotta have this"... Pure snobbery! There are also so many people who can only see the logo on the dial, like if it doesn't say Rolex it isn't good enough, even if they never seen the watch you're talking about, it's just ridiculous!

    I've been watching your vids since episode one and, invariably, have enjoyed every one of them. This is my first time to comment, so I will try to compensate for the countless times I've missed opportunities to express appreciation for your content. So, first off, you are articulate, concise and, at times, cutting (in a good way). I really appreciate how you eke so much relevant content without resorting to watch reviews and too much consumption-based messaging. You are wise way beyond your years. I also really enjoy Liquor Run and envy the warm, congenial relationship you seem to have with your father, Rolando. Last, but not least, I like how you gesticulate with a closed fist. Where did you get that from? Must be a latin thing. Bravo!

    Well said. People can enjoy things because they like them not because of how much an items worth. Cost is determined by what people will pay. With watches that can vary considerably over time. What's very popular now, & therefore expensive, may not be so popular in the future. Buy what you like & can afford remembering that watches rarely are a good investment & often are the equivalent of flushing your money down the drain.

It feels good to see time passing by on my wrist as I'm realizing that my ongoing clientele love to rent my new Lamborghini Aventador. Which means time is money and fortunately money is always coming my way, I'm always collecting and meditating good thoughts. When you sit somewhere idle maybe a hotel lounge and you wonder what your business is upto and you see it growing, then you have the right to indulge yourself with some of these stylish things... To me it's a reminder that interesting things are always happening. Bless every moment you got and take nothing for granted, time ahead is not a promise but another blessing. Love all

    I take a lot of knocks from other watch "geeks" for my love and collection of vintage Timex. But I have a fond memory of that brand that keeps me going back. Not to mention that for under $100 each I can get automatic or manual wind watches that tick all the boxes. Day/date, dress, diver, field etc.

  • @ampereira8
    @ampereira8 8 років тому

    I think that this kind of mindset also kind of comes with time, I used to want to buy a lot of watches (and I still kind of do), but it reaches a point that I go and say "well, I have more watches that I can wear different watches everyday for 2 weeks", and once it reaches that point, it becomes kind of a moo point to buy watches that are fairly similar. I did buy my grail a couple of years ago before I became a parent - a Rolex submariner, and that's probably the most expensive watch that I will ever own, because I am not interested in further pursuing that route anymore ,and because I know that I worked 9-21 for a year in order for me to get that particular watch that I have always wanted. Everything that comes after that are just bonuses.

    I was considering buying my grail piece but i've come to the conclusion that the money would be better spent elsewhere. $16000 for a watch is just plain crazy. I may just go for that vintage piece i've always been after.

    • @bobschaaf2549
      @bobschaaf2549 8 років тому +2

      I know where you're coming from, but what if the *vintage* piece you want is $16000? Or in my case, $24000. Due to a windfall, I can afford it, but still I'm looking desperately for someone to validate my lust for it and give me the go-ahead.
      On the other hand, I don't know how old you are, but my guess is I'm three times Christian's age. There aren't that many worthwhile places for an old geezer to put his money.
      Please, somebody tell me to buy the [BLEEP] watch!

    • @stephenrhodes7758
      @stephenrhodes7758 8 років тому

      It's a difficult one. If the wristwatch is that important to you then by all means go for it but only you & you alone can make that decision. In my case i simply couldn't justify spending so much when i have other priorities, so a lot depends on your current situation. Probably best to sleep on it anyhow, everything usually becomes a lot clearer when given the time.

    Very, very, very good advice Christian. I, for instance, would really love to buy a submariner, but the reality is that, I just can't in the moment. hahahah but that doesn't hinder me in considering myself as a passionate collector. Thanks for the advice and please keep the videos coming!
