I love what you did on this mantle. My husband passed away about two years ago now. But I still feel like it was just yesterday. I have been designing my mantle piece that I am wanting to make and I know I'm gonna need help and I am looking for someone that's not go to $3000.00 to death!! People know that you've lost your spouse they think you're rolling in money. The metal that I'm designing it's going to be connected to brick my whole fireplace is brick. I think you so much for posting this because now I know what kind of anchors, Or column screws that I'm gonna have to use. I learned a lot by watching your video and I have learned I am going to have to get help. There's no way I can hold that and drill and screw by myself. Thank You,👍👍 🥰 🐾
I've been in residential and some commercial construction for a while. Just started out on my own and I have to say I'm learning so much from you. You are a finish master. thank you for your time and humble attitude. Love all your work and especially this mantel
for sure. im teaching myself carpentry through youtube and the little steps that you do all the time might seem like no-brainers but a lot of times i just dont know how you or other youtubers got from a to b. thanks for videos love em
Richard, outstanding mantel design. I am always amazed with your work, I learn so much from your videos. Can't thank you enough for sharing your craftsmanship with us. Simply the best!
Your videos are really good! You're very clear with your explanations and I feel like you are genuinely honest and not trying to sell bs to viewers or show off sponsorships like so many other people do on youtube. I've been watching this video over again as I build a mantel for one of my clients who also has a tile surround and its been very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Hello Richard am embarking on one of these this week, yet I wanted to point out your comment about learning from others is a huge point of wisdom- I guess you are an old soul
I have watched many, many youtube woodworking videos and your work and expertise is the best out there. Thanks for sharing and teaching your awesome tricks and timesavers.
I truly wanted to thank you for all this very valuable information. Thank you for taking the time to film and share. I actually built a fire place mantel this past weekend following and using your video as guidance .It was a lot of fun and I learned a few tricks. Cutting the crown molding was challenging for me very tricky but I was able to get it done and I am very happy with the result. Once I saw your video I knew I could do it. I tiled the fireplace about 2 years ago and I could not find the right information to build a mantel until I found your video. Thanks again, all the best luck with your business.
This has to be one of my favourite channels. You take so much time to explain everything to the finest details. As a home DIY worker here in the UK I'm using more and more of your ideas for my finnishing work around the house. This is definately going to be one of my future projects. Keep them coming and as always, thanks for sharing.
Looks great! Nice job on anchoring to the brick! She ain't moving.thanks for taking the time and effort to video, edit and post I really appreciate your effort thank you
I watched your video one time, and decided this was the mantle I wanted to build for my project. Thank you very much for the helpful video. Excellent work!!
I'm needing to update my mantel at my house and this looks great! I love the moldings and trims you used too. Nice classic and clean look that adds to that fireplace. Thanks for sharing this project!
I know, I know, seen plenty videos from Finish Carpentry TV, he would never build anything like that off center. Sometimes you have to work with what you got...
Simple projects like this, if I could, I'd do nothing else. No rush, take your time and play around with different add ons and whatever your mind sees. Because like you said, sometimes it's the job that moves you up the ladder. Simple, clean, tight, works with the room, perfect size and becomes a focal point that blends in. I did something similar a few years back and just for the hell of it, I made a small dentil moulding with 3/4" cutouts between 1" teeth mounted just under the crown. So I'm sure you were loving this job letting your mind run. Nice, clean has always been there type of project. It's also nice to work with professionals as well, your guy is no joke when it comes to getting things done properly. 👌
You have a very informative channel. With that said I am a retired finish carpenter with over thirty years experience. With mere 7 years maybe you haven't seen as much as you will assuming you'll stick with it. One element of this work that you spend little if any time with is less than adequate jobsite conditions. There a many conditions that can be found and must be addressed. Wavy walls, not plumb, not parallel, thick inconsistent texturing, walls not square, I could go on. There's also many solutions to problems but usually only one that's best and recommended. There's also reasons to set a door out of plumb, hopefully by not much. As in the case of two perpendicular interior doors where framing is maybe not ideal. The priority here might be to set the doors so that the reveals between the finished casing legs are consistent, even though the doors may be out of plumb somewhat. Maybe even cheating the reveals between the casing and jamb legs to "fool" the eye into seeing all is ok. When doors are close it is paramount that header casings line up and casing legs are parallel and close to plumb. This is real world carpentry when all is not perfect, and part of what makes an experience carpenter so valuable, especially in a time when trades that precede us are perfect not payed to be. What's that saying, "you can't see it from my house". Or, the next trade can deal with it. We're the next to last trade on a site, and every trades shortcomings may end up being our problems. Sure, one can always call the GC and have so and so fix their work, but no GC wants to hear that all the time. They want to know that you fixed it and took the headache away from him. That's just one way to earn future work.
Good work my friend! I’ve been doing high end custom framing and finish carpentry for about 10 years now. I’m always looking on UA-cam at other carpenter video to get ideas and what not. It’s fun to see how others build. Every one of your videos I’ve watched is the correct and efficient way of doing things. Great work man! Thanks for sharing. I’ve definitely picked some things up from watching you. Keep it up brotha 🤙🏼
I want to start by saying it looks great. One thing I noticed is that when you put the top ledger on the rings were curved to the room, meaning as that board drys it may cup towards the room. There won't be any resistance to that cupping because the lag screws are dead center. Just a thought...
Richard, You are hands down one of my favorite woodworking person on youtube, right up there with Jon Peters. Your absolutely immaculate, meticulous at what you do. Quality is always my aim. Thanks for all that you do and share.
I built my fireplace mantel last year from scratch, no kit. Turned out better than I hoped, your video helped me a lot wished now i;d take before during and after photos.
Very nice look. You really do excellent work. I know you didn’t do the tile but I like that too. It’s a very nice all around look. Keep up the great videos. Thanks very much.
I really like your videos. Love your attention to detail. We work the same with our HVAC business. Aesthetics are a big part of the finished work!. Thank you for this!
Hey. Looks classic. Shellac is an alcohol base. That’s why it dries so fast as the alcohol evaporates. It does sand so nice, my fav too. Use caution your gun can shoot solvent based if you spray.
A really great primer and paint is Benjamin Moore Advance. The primer lays really flat and is sandable. The paint lays really flat when sprayed and is incredibly durable. Did some shaker cabinets out of poplar and the paint laid down like glass. Turned out great.
It would great if you could show how you approach base shoe molding. Do you pre paint and then install after everything else is painted, or paint everything at once? In Iowa most builders add shoe molding after floors are in. Would be nice to see how a remodel project approaches it.
I thought about it and I hope you don't take offense but I would have routed 3 or 5 flutes in the legs but that's just me.. It looks absolutely great as is though.
Hey I was wondering about the 12" tile reveal. You wouldn't happen to have a reference to where the firecode talks about the minimum distance from the fireplace opening to the mantle?
I don't know if I'm the only one that recommended the tapcons or the concrete Fasteners screws and Liquid Nails but you're welcome I do handyman work 53 years old you did good work too keep on smiling
Probably because it isn't a video showing how he did it, just talking. Also, the fireplace is not centred - which isn't really his fault, but it ruins the effect.
Really enjoy your videos. Your instruction is easy to follow. I would like to see more detail from measurements, calculating amount of material as well as selecting your material.
Ive been looking for the perfect mantle design to build at home and this is IT. Thank you for sharing this. Hopefully i can pickup some similar profiled wood nearby.
For spraying don’t use Pro Classic that paint does not bond well, plus it curls up when sanding. I normally spray Advance from Benjamin Moore as high end or just go with Ultra Spec even contractor grade is better than that pro classic. Awesome paints you’ll be satisfied with the finish. My personal opinion.
hmm, that's interesting. I used Pro Classic on our new unfinished Conestoga kitchen upper wall cabinets last year. Sprayed what I could outdoors before the install of the actual cabinets, but did hand do most of the stiles and rails and spray painted all doors. It's holding up great as it did when I used the same paint to do my older cabinets in 2012
Quick correction, shellac is alcohol based, I believe you used BIN. It's a great primer, very fast drying, you need a high quality brush. Don't get it on anything you don't want primed. You need alcohol to clean your brush.
I like the pro classic. Acrylic alkyd is my favorite. And for a primer I would use a stain blocking latex. Oil yellows over time and cracks with age. Sherwins seals and bonds or zinsser 123 will do the trick. Those will block tannin as well. I think the shellac isn’t necessary for this type of application. At any rate, project turned out great. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, it’s beautiful and I don’t mind the fireplace is off centre - unusual design!!!!!! Can anyone please tell me what Colour of blue walls????? Any information on that blue walls is great! Thank you, Barry
Man, I'm really glad I found this channel. Watching your stuff gives me the confidence to try some of this stuff on my own DIY projects, mostly for the tips I'd never think of myself.
You do beautiful work and I appreciate you taking the time to share. I have seen you spray many projects indoor, but I've never seen you build a shelter to protect the rest of the house from overspray. How do you typically manage overspray? Thank you.
Hey where do you put your face nails if routing the corners? I would think you'd hit the nails, what am i missing? Nice work, so simple yet looks so ornate when completed.
Richard, I'm doing a mantle right now. I'd like to add that touch with the chamfer. Have you ever tried with a ogee or cove router bit? Curious which would look best of the 3...
I love this mantle style! Is there anyway to recreate this look but have it be natural wood instead of white? I'd like to go with a dark wood color for my fireplace.
shellac based primer is denatured alcohol based? dries in seconds and really is the only thing that will stop sappy knot bleed thru... love all the tips keep it up
Great mantel! Small correction: shellac-based primer is alcohol-, not oil-based. Alcohol-based products are much more hazardous in terms of inhalation/explosion hazard as I'm sure you smelled. I didn't notice how you put up the tent cover you bought, assuming you staked it into the ground? I mention it because my HVAC guy did the same 3 years ago in the Summer so they could work on the install. Also I mention about staking because I'm an artist that does outdoor festivals and some artists have chosen pop up tents like yours. A good stiff unpredictable wind could easily take it into the air :-O I've seen it happen at every show where it's raining on the weekend.
That power grab ultimate is great it will hold with no screws but better safe than sorry .I glued a laminate floor to a wall with it no nails besides the first row where base goes
Good call on the tapcons but don't use your impact driver to install them. Just use a regular direct drive drill. The hammer action on the impact driver has a tendency to cause the hole to more or less strip out as the screw is driven in.
This was a fun little project. I'll be doing 600 linear feet of baseboard next week. Any video ideas???
Great video. Look forward to seeing how you deal with baseboard butting up to door trim. Thanks for all you do.
Dom Moflia I use Masonite 4/8 sheet x1/8 I buy it at Lowe’s works pretty good
Turned out nice bro!
Love your work and attention to detail! Would love to learn and tips or tricks for caulking baseboard/trim, when to and not to use it etc.
Nice looking mantel Richard, did you spray the zinsser primer?
I love what you did on this mantle. My husband passed away about two years ago now. But I still feel like it was just yesterday. I'd like to see more clips of each step. Even just a quick 10-15 second clip showing every single step. Love your videos so much! Keep'em coming.
NicJamesDesign I agree.. I have a similar situation that I would like finish.

Richard, outstanding mantel design. I am always amazed with your work, I learn so much from your videos. Can't thank you enough for sharing your craftsmanship with us. Simply the best!
your attention to the detail is what makes a gifted trim man keep up the awesome work and thank you for the videos
You have seriously upped your game since I started watching about a year ago! Kudos and may God bless you sir

Am in the process of building this while John is away. He'll be surprised!
I have watched many, many youtube woodworking videos and your work and expertise is the best out there. Thanks for sharing and teaching your awesome tricks and timesavers.
Sprayed 9 doors today using your method of nailing trim on top. Worked great love the videos. Keep up the good work.

Btw, I'm in Saginaw. Based out of Dallas.
I'm needing to update my mantel at my house and this looks great! I love the moldings and trims you used too. Nice classic and clean look that adds to that fireplace. Thanks for sharing this project!
Tyler Fink I need to update mine as well and love the classic simplicity of the design.
Have a look at WindsorOne - they have some great fireplace designs - FREE
FineHomebuilding have just done a Federal Fireplace article
Is it bothering anyone else that the Fireplace isn't centered on the wall?
He has nothing to do with that 🤨
I know, I know, seen plenty videos from Finish Carpentry TV, he would never build anything like that off center. Sometimes you have to work with what you got...
Yes
The fireplace is more than likely centered with the room, not with the respective wall
That was the first thing I noticed lol
Simple projects like this, if I could, I'd do nothing else. No rush, take your time and play around with different add ons and whatever your mind sees. He does do a quality work, wish we can find someone like him when we need to do our work done around the home
I ended up copying your fireplace mantle for a customer of mine.
She and I are very thankful for your skills that you share.

Absolutely elegant and beautiful. I wish I would have watched this video last week, before I redid my own fireplace hearth, mantle and stone.

Glad you included footage of the little flick you do coming out of the 3/8 chamfer. Was thinking about that technique moments before.
I built my fireplace mantel last year from scratch, no kit. Turned out better than I hoped, your video helped me a lot wished now i;d take before during and after photos.
The mantel came out amazing!! Really classy and goes perfect with the white tile marble.
That looks really nice!
I’m just south of you in Waco. My work is in drywall and paint. Keep the videos coming please.
Very nice look. You really do excellent work. I know you didn’t do the tile but I like that too. It’s a very nice all around look. Keep up the great videos. Thanks very much.
Looks great I have one coming up that I have to build. I think I’m gonna go with something like what you did. It looks clean!
Nice work you share what has taken years for you to learn and master to help thousands learn. Thanks for the video. You got my subscription
OK...just need to sand and stain and my mantle is finished. Took me a lot longer than two days! It was an awesome project! Thank you.
Another awesome project and explanation. You definitely got skills. Thanks for sharing.
If this mantle is your personal design you did really well. The proportions are perfect!

Love that fireplace! I hope my wife does, too (she loves craftsman) because I want to build it. Well done - I like your stuff!
Great job, thanks for giving the me the confidence to build a mantel like yours.
are you going to do a detailed build video on this project? Love your videos keep them coming I am learning a lot.
Like the mantle, but that paint job is the star of the show. Looks beautiful
I thought about it and I hope you don't take offense but I would have routed 3 or 5 flutes in the legs but that's just me..
It looks absolutely great as is though.
Great Job. What angle/size chamfer bit did you use for the legs?
Hey I was wondering about the 12" tile reveal. You wouldn't happen to have a reference to where the firecode talks about the minimum distance from the fireplace opening to the mantle?

Look really nice the way you put all molding together awesome !!
57 thumbs down? People just jealous wishing they could do work like that! Looks amazing man!
Probably because it isn't a video showing how he did it, just talking. Also, the fireplace is not centred - which isn't really his fault, but it ruins the effect.
Idk why but I just really like this guy! :) Very informative in every video:)
Really enjoy your videos. Your instruction is easy to follow. I would like to see more detail from measurements, calculating amount of material as well as selecting your material.
Beautiful mantel bro! Simple, yet classy 👍
Ive been looking for the perfect mantle design to build at home and this is IT. Thank you for sharing this. Hopefully i can pickup some similar profiled wood nearby.
Excellent job! I have a fireplace that I plan on remodeling and you provided a lot of practical advice and design inspiration.

I normally spray Advance from Benjamin Moore as high end or just go with Ultra Spec even contractor grade is better than that pro classic. Awesome paints you’ll be satisfied with the finish. I say yes to Ben Moore also for most any paint.
hmm, that's interesting. I used Pro Classic on our new unfinished Conestoga kitchen upper wall cabinets last year. Nice work as always. I love using shellac primer. Sands really nice and gives a super smooth surface.
Beautiful and exactly what I will do for my mantel project. 👍
Yeah, it’s beautiful and I don’t mind the fireplace is off centre - unusual design!!!!!!
Can anyone please tell me what Colour of blue walls????? Any information on that blue walls is great!
Thank you, Barry
I use a canopy all summer to stay out of the heat! Must have. Curious what sprayer tip do you recommend for doors and panels?
Richard do you have a complete vid on the actual build on the mantle? Please link it or tell me how to locate the vid. Thanks
Man, I'm really glad I found this channel. Watching your stuff gives me the confidence to try some of this stuff on my own DIY projects, mostly for the tips I'd never think of myself.

Nice job! How did you hide the end grain on the mantle support board?
Very clean. Nice proportions. Well done
I am loving this mantel,. I would like to know the size of each board used with directions
Admiro tus trabajos. Son bellos y bien diseñados. Dios te guarde y Bendiga. 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
Hey where do you put your face nails if routing the corners? I would think you'd hit the nails, what am i missing? Nice work, so simple yet looks so ornate when completed.
It looks beautiful! How much do you charge to do that?
It looks beautiful. I am not a fan of the tile but your mantle makes it work👍🏻
Richard, I'm doing a mantle right now. I'd like to add that touch with the chamfer. Have you ever tried with a ogee or cove router bit? Curious which would look best of the 3...
I love this mantle style! Is there anyway to recreate this look but have it be natural wood instead of white? I'd like to go with a dark wood color for my fireplace.
looks good bro, tapcon is all we use while drilling into concrete for our framing, works great.
Looks amazing!!!! Really enjoy watching your videos!
Nice looking mantle! Simple but elegant.
Great looking mantle, One question do you have a workshop? would differently suit jobs like this .
Beautiful work, how much did you
charge for that?
Richard, Did you spray the Zinnzer? Did you spray it with the graco sprayer and what did you thin it with?
shellac based primer is denatured alcohol based? dries in seconds and really is the only thing that will stop sappy knot bleed thru... love all the tips keep it up
Love watching your work.
Great mantel! Small correction: shellac-based primer is alcohol-, not oil-based. Alcohol-based products are much more hazardous in terms of inhalation/explosion hazard as I'm sure you smelled. The toxic component (methanol) has a very high vapor pressure. Use plenty of ventilation and a respirator with an organic solvent cartridge!
Looks very nice. Good job.
Hi Richard really looks cool. Do you guys do much stained unpainted wood work?
That power grab ultimate is great it will hold with no screws but better safe than sorry .I glued a laminate floor to a wall with it no nails besides the first row where base goes
Good call on the tapcons but don't use your impact driver to install them. Just use a regular direct drive drill. The hammer action on the impact driver has a tendency to cause the hole to more or less strip out as the screw is driven in.
I'm impressed with how much work you do. Would love to see your take on pocket doors .
You are so good of what you are doing. Great teacher!
Do you happen to say why the mantle isn't centered just wondering? Amazing job to by the way!
What do you like to use to fill the nail holes? Is it always two applications to get it to fill completely?
Love the zinseer shellac primer, makes for a great sandable filler.
Beautiful work Richard.
Hi there where do you buy the crown molding from? And what size is your top piece please?
I'm making my own version of this now. Did you use caulk to fill along the edge the crown molding or did you use drydex/plastiwood everywhere?
Great work! What was your face width on the posts? 7”
Shellac isn’t a oil based primer tho right? Denatured alcohol cleanup? That’s a form of lacquer. Use shellac a lot and love the results!
How do you price jobs like this Richard?
