These videos are really helpful! Thanks for doing this. What would be the easiest way to setup a configuration like this: 1 heavy gain preset, need to be able to enable/disable delay for solos, need to enable/disable pitch shift and change between distorted and a clean sound.
Thanks and I am glad this is helpful for you. For what you need to accomplish, scenes would work great for you. Example would be 1st scene mapped to switch 1: Clean - which could have a clean amp in the amp block in one of the 4 available channels (each amp block can host 4 different switchable amps). Scene 2 mapped to switch 2: turns on pitch shift, changed amp channel. Scene 3 mapped to switch 3: Distorted sound - pitch shift block disabled. Scene 4: Lead. Since you are out of physical switches you could program this on View 2 which you could hold the switch on the right and page over to the next 3 scenes and tap the 1st switch to change. Personally, on my pedalboard I have a small homemade 2 button momentary switch that when I tap left or right it banks up and down for the views so I can cycle my scenes, then for hold function I can bank up and down presets. Simple but effective for my workflow.
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks for taking the time to write so detailed answer. I really appreciate it :) I will try this as soon as I get my unit, can't wait!
Fantastic posts on the FM3, subscribed!
Much appreciated!!!
Great job. This answered a lot of questions for me. Thanks.
Great!
Well understood and thanks for your explanation. I'm contemplating to use two ex jacks, one for wah pedal connection while to other for a switch having two momentary switches via trs cable. That switches function VIEW up/down, if possible, so as to allow a preset to have up to eight scenes. Now, is that a possible scenarios that FX3 permits? ... Kindly tell me possibility. In addition, wish you in safe.
I messed with it over the last couple of nights. Yes that is basically how I was setting it up. At the moment I have a 2 button switch doing presets up and down and that’s working ok but just messing around at the moment. Can’t really play anywhere right now during lockdown. :-( you can program it for anything in the FC system so yes, you can set the stand in to switch views as well.
Awesome video
Great video as usual Greg- very useful tips.
As of today, would you recommend...
1. FM3 over the AxeFX3 for the more casual at home player? Do I really need 2 amp blocks? I could probably swing the Axe if I needed to but not sure I need that much power and I do like the portability of the FM3. It's so small, I could probably even take it camping!
2. The FM3 over the QC?
3. Wait a little longer- I can't help but thing there will be a new product coming that bridges the gap between the FM3 and the AAxeFX3. Maybe that's the QC- just not sure. I also wish it shipped with all their famous plug-in's pre-loaded but it does not.
Thanks!
I don’t know much about the QC and how it may or may not do but for a new piece of hardware I’d give it some time in the market and on the road for a true test. I’m sure it sounds good, etc. as far as choosing between the 2 fractal units it’s sounds like the FM3 would fit your needs. I never use 2 amps at the same time personally but I know that’s important for some people. You have to make that decision but depending on your presets and what effects you like running that would be the deciding factor from a CPU standpoint. If you want to be sure for new product you can also wait a couple months and see if they announce anything else. There’s but some chatter and speculation but nothing solid. I’m not trying to spread rumors here. I have no idea. Good luck David! The FM3 is great!
Great to know, thanks. I think I will hold out a bit longer- maybe an FM4? A little more power and 2 extra built in switches would be great (anyone listening Fractal???) (; They probably don't want to take sales away from their flagship unit.
The QC would be far more compelling if it came with their own plug-ins- not idea why those are being held back. At some point, you might be able to load them if you already own them. By contrast, Fractal gives it's customers more presets than we could use in a lifetime- all included per-loaded in the unit as of course they should be.
I don’t use any of their presets but they are a great starting point to get up and running or are good for tweaking to make your own.
Thanks bro!!
You are very welcome!
This is really useful, cheers. Do we get all the same amp models in the FM3?
For the next firmware release (it’s in beta now) 1.04, all the amps will be up to date. There are a few missing in 1.03.
Greg Summers thanks :)
I guess kind of predicated on having used the fs12. Being a newby with my fm3 i'm learning my way around making my own presets but still having some difficulties setting up my switching for live performance.
Stand in switches help and are really cheap (20-30 bucks) and will give you 2 to 4 more switches but the FC6 /12 will give you the most flexibility. Live use I use a 2 button stand in switch that changes presets and views for scenes 1-8
If you would like some extra switches for your FM3, we’ve got you covered! You can add up to 4 extra switches to your FM3 with this: www.ottercustomdesign.com/product-page/ocd-duo-for-fractal-audio-fc-6-fc-12-fm-3
Hello there! I few of us were excited when we saw your products previously (can't remember where..maybe on the forum) but it seems maybe at the time they weren't available. Would love to show these on the channel some day!
@@GregSummersMusic Hey Greg, I'll PM you on facebook
I’m trying to find our conversation in messenger and can’t seem to find it. I’ve had a few more people talking about this on Facebook. Can you PM me? Wanted to see where we left off. I know we talked amazon stuff, etc.
I just got mine today. I can’t get any sound by going into the input of a combo amp. Obviously, I’m a noob to the axefx world......
Best thing is reading the manual....first few pages outline setup scenarios. Page 31 tells you exactly how to do this.
I'd like to set a switch for scene up, the next as tap tempo / tuner and the last for preset up. Would this be possible?
All possible! Currently I have a separate stand in two button switch set up to +/- presets so I can keep my 3 for other things. Their programming system allows you to control just about anything that you could want. It's very flexible.
I prefer 12 switches for live playing.
3 switches is Ok for the bedroom or studio. Just my opinion. Single tap and instant preset, instead of tap holding and tap dancing.
Yep, 12 would be easier. I’m currently testing out my FC 12 with the FM3. Just not sure I want to carry more equipment. My current setup is really easy and capable for my current weekend gig. Just the FM3 and a 2 button switch.
Does this basically do the same thing as the axe fx if I’m using it for home playing/recording with the computer using the edit on the computer? I bought the axe fx 3 and I really don’t like it enough to justify the price I paid for it but if I pay half the price and get generally the same stuff I’m interested.
The axe Fx 3 has a lot more power. They will he sound the same though. If you aren’t happy with the sound of the axe fx 3 then you won’t be happy with the FM3 but even at that if you aren’t happy with the sound, I’d reach out to the forums and.voice your concerns. Lots of help there.
nice vid, but if u sing and play a song that needs 4 or more presets, its only 3 switches, bro
Haha unless you are being sarcastic...did you watch the entire video? Just advance to the next page for more presets. Easy to walk up and down through pages of 3 selectable presets per layout. I can’t remember if I went into that in this video but I usually do.
Just read your comment again and see you are mentioning presets within a song. Generally you aren’t switching presets in the middle of a song. You can, but due to the gap that exists in all modelers when switching presets, you are better off using scenes within one preset to change effects, amps, etc for that one song. Easiest is 1 preset per song using the 8 available scenes within that preset. If you need to change presets within a song (more than 3) you can hold buttons 1 or 3 to change views very easily to access the next 3 presets in either direction and keep going and going and going lol.
@@GregSummersMusic Really appreciate your thorough answer. I should have mentioned 4 or more scenes in a song. If I was just playing guitar, its absolutely fine to hold a button to get to other scenes, but when you are singing, this really gets on your way.
Fractal for me is the only modeler that reached the digital distortion quality I can compare to analog, but Im kinda disappointed in this form factor. I understand its an specific situation, but asking for 2 rows of 5 switches, with proper bank up and down, its not a lot considering a state of the art tech. where I live, the FC6 is a fortune itself. Thanks, cheers from Brazil.
Totally understand. Personally for live use I use a stand in switch, a small 2 button momentary switch that I tie to views and scenes to avoid the hold feature. I made my own but you can buy any cheap switch (under 50 bucks) and use it for any function in the FC switching system that you want so all I do it tap one of the switches to go to the next page. It is faster than holding for sure. And makes better sense if you are singing, but yes the FC-6 would be ideal.
@@GregSummersMusic Avoiding the hold feature helps a lot, I actually have a midi moose along with my nova system for this purpose, but still, not ideal. Thanks a lot for your help.
