E minor and A minor pentatonic scale both fit over the Cmaj7. The notes of those scales and the arpeggios of the Cmaj7 chord are almost the same and all the notes are in the C major diatonic scale. The notes of the D minor pentatonic are all diatonic to C as well but the F note of the D minor scale doesn't sound that good. When the C major scale is harmonized you get Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmajor7, Gdom7, Aminor, Bm7b5, all of those arpeggios fit over the C major 7 and each other just like all notes C major scale notes fit into a melody in C. I like it when I play an E minor arpeggio over and A minor chord in particular. I do it all the time.

Wny do you say to play the E minor scale over the Cmaj7 chord? Does that have something to do with the relative minor scale?
