    Tip from someone who just bought a Grand Highlander Platinum gas model.. go into it pretending you want a limited because you can’t afford the platinum. My dealership took $4,000 off to get me to limited price and I walked out with a Platinum.

      Gas models heavily discounted after negotiation. I got the regular Highlander Limited. I liked the Platinum but no way would I get the panoramic sunroof. Too many reports of cracking and explosions. Repair cost $ 11.000. One lady posted in Toyota nation that her second one exploded six months later.

    I think that this represents an amazing value. Oh… Its not cheap, but for what it offers… it is a steal. Considering it’s competition, it is perfectly placed… price-wise, quality-wise reliably-wise and most importantly… value-wise. You had me until you mentioned that it may/will be … Lexus-ified. If done properly, and I suspect it will… that may be worth the extra $10-15,000 dollars more. There’s always a hook. Thanks for the great video, Magnum (and your colourful Wife, of course). Aloha.

    Zack, thanks for your thought at the end as to what can be improved - offering a bench in all trim levels. YES! If Pilot can do it (as can the Ford Explorer as an option in the top trims, and apparently the Nissan Pathfinder.) If they've got issues with GVWR then make the bench an option and let people deal with the 50 lbs less weight capacity. Please! I *REALLY* want one of these but the whole captain's chairs things is a show-stopper and I'm old enough that I want *all* the gadgets and features on the Platinum trim. Toyota, please - MAKE IT HAPPEN!

    • @danguelph2676

    • @jsfbay1
      @jsfbay1 Рік тому

      So what is your logic? Why does a family 3 row have to have captain's chairs? @@danguelph2676

  • @jsfbay1
    @jsfbay1 Рік тому +1

    So were you able to sit in the 2nd row comfortably (with enough legroom) with the driver's seat adjusted for you? I was barely able to do this yesterday in the Grand Highlander (GH for short), so I'm wondering how I would fit in the 2nd row of the regular Highlander with the driver's seat set for me at 6' 1"?
    I had my mind blown yesterday when I sat in the 2023 Pilot and 30 minutes later, the GH. The Toyota dealership didn't have a regular Highlander to sit in for a comparison, so I need to find a dealership that has both side by side.
    There was virtually NO 2nd-row leg room in the GH with the driver's' seat set comfortably for me. My knees were touching the driver's seat! And that was after compromising my driver's position a bit, in other words, reducing the recline and moving the seat a few notches forward.
    The 2023 Pilot actually had a more comfortable (WRT legroom) 2nd row fit for me - not by more than 1" or 2" at most, but still definitely more comfortable. This was something I absolutely was NOT expecting. And it was the same with the 3rd row - I just barely fit in both, but was more comfortable in the Pilot. Well, as comfortable as someone my height could be in a mid-size SUV's 3rd row, lol!
    Something that both models lacked was a way to move the 2nd row forward and back while sitting in the 3rd row. Granted if I'm in the 3rd row, it's because someone is sitting in the 2nd row and they could move the seat for me, but still it would be a helpful little extra. I also preferred the way the Pilot's 2nd-row seat moves forward when in the 3rd row - the Pilot has buttons, and the GH has levers. I had to move the lever a lot further than I expected before the seat could be moved. Just a personal preference.
    I guess this explains why the Pilot has less cubic feet behind the 3rd row than the GH - they chose to allow more overall flexibility in the 1st and 2nd row seating position (and hence the location of the 3rd row.) I just expected the GH's 2nd row captain's chair to slide further back than it did. It really and truly surprised me, given I've watched probably 20 or more reviews of the GH and don't recall anyone saying it was an issue (I guess most of the reviewers were less than 6' 1".)

    Great review. I never miss an episode or live chat. My wife and I own a 2023 Toyota Sienna XSE Ruby Flare Pearl. We however, do not consider this van to be frumpy at all! These vans are not for snotty nose kids anymore...it is as awesome for a road trip as it is for running around town. People need to get over the stigma of minivans and realize what this Sienna can do versus a more expensive SUV.

    Even if the turbocharged 4 cylinder has Toyota's typical excellent engineering, I will missed the engine note and refinement of the good old Toyota 3.5 litre V6. Despite of what I just said, Toyota has another winner on its hands. They have both Highlander and Grand Highlander to earn both side of customers, which will be equally amazing for their bottom lines. Can't wait for their upcoming 4Runner, TX and GX lines of strong SUV offerings.

    I'll ask this question here but also sent you an email, and thanks for all of your informative videos.
    We're in the market for a new midsize or larger SUV. Our present vehicle is the 2012 Lexus RX with 6 cylinder motor. It has served us well and we'd like to get another car with a non-turbocharged 6 but are frustrated by so many models (like Lexus) no longer offering a 6. It seems you so often speak highly of the turbo 4's and the torque they generate but never address the flip side that turbos often require additional servicing and/or replacement. In my mind, the Turbo 4 sounds great for someone driving off the lot in a car they're leasing or trading out every 2 to 4 years, but for folks like us who'd like to keep their car longer (like 10 years), would you feel comfortable recommending an SUV with a Turbo 4 or do we really need to focus only on the models which still provide a 6 cylinder.

      My favourite Grand Highlander model is the Hybrid Max, not only does it have great power, the fuel economy is pretty good and I get a spacious third row to haul people .I like how easy the touchscreen is to access as well. But it is pricey and a little more than the top trim CX-90. I think the CX-90 is terrific but if I want all the bells and whistles, I can only get it as a 6-passenger vehicle. If that's the case, I would rather have a spacious 5-passenger SUV. My second choice would be the Grand Highlander 2.5L Hybrid because the fuel economy is also very good. It's such a tough choice between the two because they both do things really well but if I am getting a three row SUV, I want the extra space and the CX-90 is smaller.

    • @MIZUNOMP60
      @MIZUNOMP60 Рік тому +2

      @@andreaspencer9813 Thanks for your insight, Andrea. I really enjoy how Mazda's drive, but I wish they gave the CX-90 a touchscreen option and I'm not a big fan of the new shifter. Also, cargo space is a bit of a disappointment given the vehicle's size. However, the new in-line 6 cylinder looks strong, the materials look premium, and I'd bet it's a bit more fun to drive than the Grand Highlander. The Toyota is probably the better all round package.
      Looking forward to the new Lexus TX and GX debuts!

    I'm not sure why people are willing to wait months or even years to get the Toyota they want. Toyota is proving to hit the sweet spot on almost every new model they put out, but the manufacturing delays aren't worth the wait.

    I love Toyota
    Captain seats is a No No for me, if I need to carry very often 5 adults, the 3rd row is not functional, it is ok for sometime when you have more than 5 people but loosing a 3 people seat in 2nd row is a terrible idea wtf

    • @springertube
      @springertube Рік тому +2

      I agree, greatly reduces utility, versatility. For many people, the 3rd row is occasional use only regardless of vehicle size,... and even though superior in room back there to the "regular" Highlander my prediction is many will treat the GHL that way too. A lot of captain's chair fans will say "just put the additional passenger back there," and it's great you now can accommodate that much better... but on road trips that area is needed for luggage, baby, camping gear etc. Not nearly everyone wants to have to get/use a roof carrier (that reduces over-head clearance, needs a ladder to get to and doesn't hold a lot of that stuff anyway) for that duty, just for want of that additional second row passenger space.

    If you go to Toyota US website to build a GH XLE hybrid, you will have a lot more color options and can add a panorama sunroof for $1350! Time to tell Toyota Canada to step up! This is not acceptable.

    If I got the Grand Highlander.. I'd want the Kit & Kaboodle 362hp engine..
    I just wish it had the range of the Sienna or Rav4 prime.
    It needed an 18gal gas tank & a lil better mpg.
    Gotta get it in AWD of course.
    It's pretty... But If Im paying a lil more.. I'd want certain things that the Sienna gives & even the RAV4 gives that this doesn’t.
    I also like the smaller wheels on a vehicle like this.. 18in is perfect.
    But If Im getting a gas only engine.. then I'd prefer a 5th Generation 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium
    because I'd go for Ruggedness & customization in the aftermarket.
    Im a lil old school.. because I kinda hate panoramic Sunroofs. I kinda Always feel the sun a lil more on my head. Where I retract my thoughts on panoramic sunroofs.. is in big cities where looking up is a beautiful sight. Or big mountain views.. but that mostly benefits the passengers.. not me driving lol. I like the size of the 4Runner, Grand Highlander & Sienna for diff reasons than what some are intended.. While I may haul 2-3 passengers at times.. I haul production gear.. and sometimes I travel far to gigs where driving just makes more sense than flying. So my goal is: carrying 2-4ppl.. all of our Gear... great in all weather conditions because we go in every condition.. reliability.. and range per tank would really be helpful. The Sienna does this..
    The 4Runner does most of it but mpg lacks.. the RAV4 Prime is great.. but lacks space if riding with more than 2ppl with gear.
    So... I was hoping the Grand Highlander would get there with the MPG.. It does seem to have everything else.

    I love the V6 in my Avalon... But the wife needs an SUV... it coulda been this one... but no V6? I get it... the government has twisted Toyota's arm for extra mileage... But as a guy who keeps his vehicles for 10+ years and well over 150,000+ miles that Turbo four ain't gonna go the distance... Hello Honda... the Pilot or even the Passport is a better deal for us... sorry Toyota...

    Manufacturers keep putting these tiny engines in these big vehicles. Seems like a recipe for engine failure. Also, SUVs of this size used to be able to tow… you pretty much have to buy a truck now if you want it tow anything.
