- In anticipation for the all-new and much anticipated 2020 Lincoln Aviator that is arriving Summer of 2019, I thought it would be fun to take a detailed, in-depth look at the First Generation Lincoln Aviator. As it would happen, this is a 2003, which is the first model year that was available. Despite it being based on the Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer platform, Lincoln went to great lengths to differentiate the Aviator in the premium midsize luxury SUV segment, thus creating the "Baby Navigator". The Lincoln Aviator is V8 powered, however, that motivation is not from the Explorer/Mountaineer SOHC variety, but rather the Mustang Mach 1-sourced Modular 4.6L DOHC 32V series, providing 63 MORE horsepower than the SOHC variant. The Aviator was only produced from model years 2003-2005. Offering more luxury and equipment compared to the Explorer/Mountaineer counterparts, the Aviator, while the shortest Lincoln ever produced, was much like the Navigator in every respect, save overall dimensions. In looks, they were near identical. Ironically, the same holds true with the new 2020 Aviator! Loosely based on the Ford Explorer platform, but being heavily modified to make it genuine Lincoln and being a sort of "Baby Navigator" in its own right, this video highlight of the original mid-size luxury SUV is very fitting indeed!
The Aviator shown here is painted in Mineral Gray Metallic and features the Light Parchment leather interior. This Aviator, in 2003, stickered for $47,325, which equates to $68,150 in today's dollar.

I am the proud owner of a 2004 Lincoln Aviator. Purchased it in 2007. This SUV has been by far a excellent purchase and it still looks new on the inside. Gonna drive it until the wheels fall off. At present it has 134,000 miles.Just recently replaced the original radiator.😎
Wow ! Glad to hear how's it holding up still ?
@@LXRD-SUPREME- Only God knows ajjaa
One of the many things I really loved about Lincolns from this era of the original Aviator was the interiors. This 2003 Aviator has a truly gorgeous interior in my personal opinion, the seats look amazing, and the wood and metal trim and details are just top notch. I always had a soft spot for these trucks, a true Baby Navigator.
Just bought one two months ago. Black on beige. Such a sweet ride. Very reliable. King in the snow. Engine is so smooth. 173k miles and its butter. Fast for its weight and size. Will definitely tune it soon. Its basically a marauder in the suv form
Just picked one up with 103,000 miles on it,/ 5,000 bucks looks great thanks for the video
How's it holding up? I'm looking for one aviator or navigator
I remember these, I've called these the baby Navigator. Love the hat btw, I'll need to get one being a Lincoln owner.
Baby Navigator yeah thats about right
Had one of these. Loved it so much.
This is my first Lincoln and I've done so much stuff to it stuff you can't pay other mechanics to do have to learn on my own so this Lincoln helps me advance levels.
Thanks for the video. Very detailed.
Great Review! I am seeing these 1st generation Aviators all over the place again...lol..
+Cassandra Sellers, M.A. Thank you for the kind words! This was fun to do, and I am STOKED about the new Aviator!
@@NeighborhoodCarReviews You are Welcome! I am looking forward to you doing your Walk-Around Video for the 2020 Aviator!! :-)
I've suddenly been seeing them again, least 2 so far than I had before the Aviator was reborn.
You have a good one, listen to that 4.6 purr. Always thought this model was better then the explorer. Don't really see them anymore where I live in the northeast.
I prefer the second generation Lincoln Navigator, it's a shame we don't have these cars in Kenya.
Nice review. Do you happen to know how it's setup for child carseats in the second and third rows?
Great Review Of 2003 Lincoln Aviator. 😁
+YoshiFTW BoshiFTL Thank you!
Nice 😀
1st of 2 marauder style cobra powered derived explorer. The 2nd is the 2007-2010 Explorer Sport Trac Adrenaline. 2003 is the best year for the Aviator.
I wanna get this for my first car would you recommend also how much miles do these get before they start breaking down. also fyi im a college student about to graduate.
They're ok. But beware of transmission problems. 05-06 Navigator will be a bit more reliable. The 4.6 in the Aviator is great. It's the same engine used in the 90s-2000s Mustang Cobra.
Mid 05's aviators and lx470 had very similar taillights.
I just purchased this model, 120k miles for 5k It’s still in immaculate condition and we love it!! It does however have a roar in the back that we can’t figure out what it is or where it’s coming from, my husband has checked the barring and they’re good as is the rear end oil. Any ideas would be helpful! I also wasn’t told or aware that a higher octane gas was required so with gas prices like they are In glad its not a every day driven car. 🤣🤣🤣
How's the SUV holding up? I might buy one soon
@@JuanJimenez.did you ever buy one ?
@@dubghost1829 I did not. I ended up getting a 2008 Ford Taurus instead.
I have a 2004 and it does same thing speacially in the 55-65 MPH can’t figure out what it is
I ended up trading mine in, and boy do I miss it! I love that Lincoln!
Esa es la mía
yanis Guerrero Santana OOO NO LA VENDES. ???
This is a 4x4? No switch?
The system in the Aviator is all-wheel drive, which of course means no transfer case.
@John Smith I guess I really need to refresh my car knowledge. I see exactly what you mean. Thanks for correcting me.
