Megan Washington: Why I live in mortal dread of public speaking

  • Megan Washington is one of Australia's premier singer/songwriters. And, since childhood, she has had a stutter. In this bold and personal talk, she reveals how she copes with this speech impediment-from avoiding the letter combination “st” to tricking her brain by changing her words at the last minute to, yes, singing the things she has to say rather than speaking them.

She really touched me with her talk and her voice. Her I am, sitting here thinking about dropping my speech class because of the panic attacks I have when I give speeches. Though I don't have a speech impediment, I can relate to her experience of feeling vulnerable about your insecurities when speaking publicly. This really put my fear into perspective, and it makes me want to conquer it instead of run from it. Thanks for that. I truly admire her bravery and her talent.

My brother stutters and he has it bad, I stutter a little too but not half as serious as him. This talk felt very personal and im so happy for the speaker finding her voice and having people listen to her without being uncomfortable through her singing.
With stuttering its more of how uncomfortable you feel knowing you make other people uncomfortable when you stutter than how uncomfortable people actually are about it.

Oh man, if only I had that amount of courage and pride in me everyday. I would carry myself much more differently. My head would be so much higher. I feel locked up, scared to say my own name. Stuttering really is a drag with no cure. I've been stuttering since I can remember, currently 15 in the 9th grade. As I too had the same hopes that maybe I would grow out of my speech impediment, but it looks as if it wont be going away any time soon. Which is frustrating but i need to learn to live with it, i have a loving girlfriend who doesn't look at me for my impediment but for who I am whole, as a person. Truly inspiring, this has given me a different perspective of stuttering. Maybe it isn't all that bad. I like to broaden my vocabulary so people know that stuttering has no effect on my intelligence. I am as intellectual as they are, even perhaps more. I excel in English/ Literal, currently having the highest GPA in my honers. I hope too soon carry myself with such confidence.

I love how when she relaxes a bit and gets into one of her "fun" sections that the stutter drops off such as 2:07. I've known a few people with a stutter and it is usually like this.

I think it's because when you know you're about to say something fun, you tend to inhale a bit more and it causes you to almost SING it, or something like that... kinda like in a RAP kind of way... >_

I absolutely loved this talk. I can totally relate to everything said here, being a stutterer myself. It's so frustrating being able to sing clearly, or talk in another persons voice, but not your own.
By the way, words that have a "b" followed by an "a" are my kryptonite. Like "banana".

Interesting talk! I live in Spain and very few Spanish people can pronounce my name, Steve, without putting an 'E' in front of it - so here I am Esteve (or more accurately, Estiff).
Years ago I worked on a helpline where a lot of elderly people rang in to enquire about the value of their Saving Certificates. Many of them used to mispronounce as Sustificates. Repeating patterns of mispronunciation must lead to a common cause that can be rectified. You sing real nice BTW Megan!!!

It must require an extraordinary amount of courage to stand up and do a speach like that when you stutter. On the other hand other personal matters have been publicly announced by people, so maybe courage is just around in surplus.
For me it was fun to note that some parts of the text - especially when Megan got excited about something - came out with no stutter at all - and for me there was no 'visible' cause for this.
I'm happy Megan did this speach. Lots of people stutters and no matter how much you want to include them, you get bored over time and isolates them. This is not fair at all! But it's life.

As one that has stuttered all his life, and yet has made his living as a public speaker and broadcaster.....I am amazed by Megan's boldness to share how a stutters mouth and mind work. It is NOT normal or natural, but each learn our own tricks an defy the odds and overcome in our own ways. Standing O for Megan Washington !

I studied Speech Therapy and have a slightly different perspective on stammering. This lady has achieved so much despite having a stammer and... so what? A stammer is unrelated to someone's intelligence and talents. Therapy is about, not curing it, but not letting it get in the way of doing your thing. Setting strategies and techniques so you can go about your day. Do we set the bar so low in our expectations that we're SURPRISED when someone with a stammer goes on to achieve great things? I will not patronize her by declaring how wonderful and inspirational it is that she's (gasp!) able to do a speech with a speech impediment. Good on her though for overcoming her hear of public speaking- a fear we probably all have- stammer or no stammer.

    • @iflymilly
      @iflymilly 9 років тому +2

I'm a year late, but I think this is more about music saving her from her self-doubt/pity (due to stammering), rather than achieving greatness whilst having a "setback".

After watching this video, I experienced a lot of emotions. First of all, her singing is incredible. Secondly, I am glad that people with such disabilities have the courage to perform in front of an audience despite their fear. It's important to realise that nervousness before a performance is a normal phenomenon and doesn't necessarily mean that you will fail your presentation.

I have a lisp which caused me to almost fail kindergarten. I devised a way of saying the letter s, which is completely not the way a mouth normally goes, but it largely masks my lisp. One of my close friends however, has lived his whole life with a stutter and he has never had any type of intimate relationship to my knowledge. He is in his 70s and his embarrassment and resulting shyness has confined him to a very private life, with a handful of really close friends, usually due to work-based relationships. something so small as a speech impediment can really impact the way someones life unfolds.
