Chaconia - The National Flower of Trinidad and Tobago

This is the Chaconia, The National Flower of Trinidad and Tobago
Also called “Wild Poinsettia” or “Pride of Trinidad and Tobago” it is a bright red forest flower, belonging to the Rubianceae family.
It blossoms between February to November with its peak around July, therefore it is at its best for our Independence Celebrations on August 31st.
The named “Chaconia” is said to be in honour of the last Spanish Governor or Trinidad, Don Jose Maria Chacon.
There are actually 2 variations of the Chaconia Flower, the Single and Double Chaconia.
Officially, the Double Chaconia is now the national flower of Trinidad and Tobago - this change was made in 2019 as the double Chaconia is indigenous to Trinidad, as opposed to the Single Chaconia, which can be found in other countries in the new world tropical regions.
As our National Flower, the Chaconia is represented in various places such as our currency, specifically the 25 Cent and our second highest national award for long and meritorious service is called the Chaconia Medal.
Of course, being red, it matches well to our other national symbols as the Flag, the Coat of Arms and our national bird of Trinidad, the Scarlet Ibis.
As an indigenous plant, it has witnessed the birth of our nation and up to the present time, so next time, when you see the Chaconia while you are out and about, I hope you can apricate it’s value as an important symbol of our nation.
