Now convert that to Indian currency and think after marriage and before marriage also there are some small function which extra cost and the dowry means cash given to the boy family for well being of daughter.

Indian weddings are done to showoff from parents to other relatives about their wealth, Middle class people take huge loans from lenders and do marriages, all you get is more debt and in the end, daughters family has to give huge dowry also. Marriages are less about boy and girl more about showcasing family wealth.

Why do the American kids have college debt if their parents are saving up for their education? On the contrary, Indian parents save for both education and marriage.

Is it? Don't you think a middle class family? If they celebrate like a festival then life long they will die in debts

@@srr1106Well we perfer that because we live our kids and we would rather rbe debts than to provide our kids with a bad weddings. You might say it is metralistic but that is our culture and we love. You may disagree with me on this but to each its own

Average income of indian household in US -> 120K.
And people who went from India directly for job in US earns even more.
In my own college from NSIT delhi every year some people went for about 1.5cr in usa that more than 200K for one person.

It's absolutely wrong....as the the person who can afford a wedding of about $40k he can surely educat hi/her child the best way possible....n as a matter of fact an average indian wedding starts at about $15-$20k .....n the most expensive wedding in india went off for about $100m

To be frank, education in India is way cheaper than that in the states. There's a lot of Govt. Colleges and Schools and scholarship opportunities for students belonging to poor families. As an example, the semester fees of my college for unreserved candidates is about 140 USD (INR 10000).

None of my Indian friends spent that much on weddings although they could very well afford. Real nosy families she is talking about I guess.

Everyone spend more than they can afford... I spent way less because I met my husband on April 28th 2013 and married him May 23rd 2013. Had to arrange a simple wedding

A wedding is not a marriage. It does not define your marriage. I personally would not feel comfortable spending that much money & would rather save that money for a house or a trip.

Divorce rate is low cause women are thought to adjust & bear abuses mentally and physically. Cause logh kya sochenge

Exactly what I was thinking! She said that as if women in India have the option or at least think they do when it comes to divorce and remarriage. Everywhere we see abusive husbands with wives who just cannot escape, some of them who don't even know that escaping an abusive household was what people do!

Imagine how this huge sum of money could be used to improve the lives of many hardcore poor in India living in the nearby slum. By doing so, the rich family will get good karma in return.
