It depends on where you are located (what zone) and when the weather will start to turn cold. On the back of most seed packets there is a map of the U.S. that shows the different zones and when to plant. You can use that to find where you are located and as long as you're in the time frame it lists you should be good. As a very general rule, if you are in the U.S. and not in a very northern part, you can plant as late as the end of May and still have a harvest of most things. I'm in the high desert of southern California (Zone 8b) and I'll be transplanting my plants to the garden today (last day of April) The best way to know is to understand your Zone.
