I've learned so much from your videos. My first set of seedlings (2 years ago) all died upon transplanting. I learned quite a few things through your videos + website. Using the information I learned, I was able to have a hearty cucumber harvest + decent amount of tomatoes with my plants I started from seed last summer! So gratifying! And I have big plans to expand that this year!

I’m currently having the worst outbreak of fungus gnats in my indoor plants! I’ve tried everything, DE, sand, watering at the base and they’re still here. These annoying things are making me hesitant to even start my seeds indoors this year. 😭
@@MelanieLauree go to your local indoor grow places, they make a concentrated solution called T-drops. They are worth every penny. You can also use yellow sticky tape boards, bright yellow. Use them directly on the soil. Gnats start in the soil. I've also heard using a solution of drop of lemon scented dish soap to sprayer bottle of water. I've not tested the latter. I believe there are certain herbs those buggars avoid, that may be worth a shot. Definitely, don't stop growing your own food. Please keep trying.

I used to keep my seeds in binders with baseball card sleeves but converted to this method this year. It is phenomenal. I highly recommend! Hubby bought them on Amazon for me for Christmas.
You can buy them on craft stores like Michael’s, it’s a photo box. Buy on sale or a coupon though, they are outrageous full price and frequently go on sale for 50% off.
I live in Arizona. Zone 8 I believe. I started some seeds indoors for now. Ive never grown anything in my life except my 2 kids so I have no idea what Im doing and conserned about our strong heat and sun. Will I be able to learn?
I use a mix of compost(has lots of bugs) and potting soil in my house. I have plenty of fungus gnats and many mushrooms grow in my solo cups. It's really no big deal though. I disagree with the sterilised soil, if you don't care about seeing a few gnats, just use whatever will work. The gnats aren't too hard to keep the population down, I recommend mosquito bits

For many just trying this out - it can be confusing and I think it's helpful to see it from start (the planning) to the plant under the grow light. I enjoy your videos even though my propagating works fine. So, from another veggie grower in WA, thank you for sharing and keep up the good works!
I mixed coco coir in with potting mix last season, it worked well. I don't think it will provide the nutrient requirements on its own. That's why I went with a 50/50 ratio. Just my thoughts. Happy growing!

Great knowledge Melissa, building a raised garden bed and want to extend the life of the wood, what eco , food grade oil or stain should I use on the wood...
I've used food grade mineral oil for indoor cooking utensils and for the untreated wood raised beds. It only lasts outdoors for one season and must be reapplied. It's worth it to me.
I also live in the nw and had the same issue with nats. I brought in a small planter in from outside and was planning on putting the dirt in the oven to sterilize it, but just left it in the sink as my family had started painting with out me. We painted the dining room, living room. Just as we were getting done. The nats hatched and were drawn to the walls with wet paint. Their little legs got stuck in the wet paint. We had to wait until the paint dried and then vacuum the walls. I can't imagine how many thousands of nat feet are still in the paint on those walls! Live and learn!

Westminster, SC here. I have Carrots, Swiss Chard and Collards that survived and thrived our winter which was hohum but did get down to about 16 degrees. I went out to get some Carrots and they were frozen solid in the ground! I figured they were done but nope! Still growing and getting even bigger. These plants were put in the ground LAST Spring! Oh forgot...I also have some Onions and Garlic that's also still growing.
Good video, yes a plant at the big box store are about $4.79 or 3 for $15.00 a packet of seeds $3-$4 . Plus if there heirloom just start saving your own.

Tonight I signed up on the waitlist for the academy and ordered your four books on Amazon. I am 56 years old and grew up learning to garden and can and preserve food, however I only grew and preserved only the same things my mom and aunts did. Last year I started branching out and trying a few new things. My goal this year is to learn lots more. All this years I’ve never seed saved or seed started with the exception of a family heirloom pole bean. Even though I have some experience I feel like I know very little compared to what you cover in your videos. You are such a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful example of a Proverbs 31 woman❤️. I’m disabled now due to permanent spinal and nerve damage so I can’t do what I used to but I’m watching your videos and with that and your books hope to learn so much more. Hello from Whidbey Island, Melissa! I’m starting seeds for the first time this year, and within a day my plastic windowsill seed trays with humidity cover began to smell like a mildewed dishrag, and the horrid smell permeated through my whole house! I used sterile seed-starting mix. What did I do wrong? I don’t want to invest in an indoor growing system if it will make my house stink!
I am a newbie gardener and I really struggled over this past summer because it is so hot the only thing that grew well was sweet potatoes and onions everything else died. I have had some luck during this time of year with peppers and herbs. I guess just need to figure out what to plant when not many channels to follow in my zone

Hey, I sold $200 dollars worth of extra starts at my road side stand. This was in June last year and on a side country road that doesn't get just a ton of traffic. Go for it! I plan to start earlier with my stand this year. Let your neighbors support you rather than the box stores who could care less. :)
I really like to use the peat pots for seed starting in Maine zone 5b because I can start indoors even plants that don't like their roots messed with at all. I pay more but planting out is so much easier with the peat pots, simply dig those holes, place the pots with seedlings in holes with amendments, back fill, water in, and I'm done. The peat pots are also really porous and dry out quickly so I water more indoors too. The simplicity of it all allows me to grow a lot of plants, even the ones with longer growing seasons, with our really short growing season here and all the challenges that are inherent with my disabling conditions. The hugelkulture beds i had built raised to the mid thigh and raised large containers help with the disability challenges with gardening also. Edit: I also like that I can start with the smallest peat pots and if seedlings become a bit "leggy" it's easy to simply transplant those seedlings in the peat pots that are the next size up.
I live in zone 10b where there is no frost dates. However being on the coast we get cold ocean breeze which seems to stunt their growth (typically in the 60s year round here). How would I then figure when to start my seeds?

Once my seeds start sprouting and need actual light, can I put them in my green house even though my average last frost is April 5th? Just trying to save space with the whole grow light thing. Depends on the temperature in your greenhouse. If they're warm weather plants they shouldn't go below 55 degrees and will do better around at least 60 degrees at night as the low

@@phanomchanthavong1668 last year I didn’t let them bloom at all I clipped all flower bud and runners except the daughter plant, let that one root, and replanted it. My plants were really full and can’t wait for spring to tend to them I bought hulk berries that bloom a few times before fall

I was finally able to join the Academy (due to some extra finances at the right time). It has been invaluable. Thank you so much! I’ve had the books and worked from them but the academy is such a great resource for a deeper insight into each category. I’ve been soaking as much info. As I can. But it takes time. I can’t wait until the next opening for beans. I was able to get some lina sisco bird egg beans this year though for SSE. Waiting on them still. Do they make a good green bean? Much love and prayers.

They eventually died off after removing the soil from the house. You can also use a small dish with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap on top as a trap for them. Place it near where they're flying.
Just purchased both books from Christianbooks for cheaper than amazon had them. I feel overwhelmed by the garden this year, and praying these will help. I have been looking for a full seed to pantry book/planner and hope this will be helpful as we have never had a garden as big as we are planning this year before. Thank you for the great content!
Thanks Melissa for this! So I would NEED to get a grow light? I have a lot of Sun that comes through my back slider door all afternoon. Would this not be sufficient? I will be starting my onion and pea seeds within the next week! 😬 Also, the salad containers are ok to use because the soil only needs to stay damp so you don’t need holes in the bottom of your container for drainage right? Unless you're in the lower half of the United States close to Mexico it's doubtful the sun through the window will be strong enough. They need at least 8 to 12 hours of direct sunlight to do well or 16 hours by grow light

Good Video Lady Melissa, I use Miracle Grow potting soil in 5 gallon buckets for my ghost peppers. They do great like this, Haven't tried organic yet. but plan to set some tomato's out in buckets.this spring, also squash @ potatoes. Just to C - IF. I can pull it off. Bagged potting soil is FULL of black fly. It’s in the sphagnum moss they use in the mix. I bought indoor potting soil which is heat treated and I still had black flies.

I read you could sterilize soil by microwaving it. Also, dampening off happens with potting soil too. Was thinking about using coconut coir instead.

Don't need light until the first set of true leaves??? Won't the seedlings get leggy if they don't have light soon after they have sprouted?
Mine don't get super leggy, I've left them by the stove until the majority sprout before moving them to the grow light.

Root vegetables don't like being transplanted. I've never grown the melon you mentioned but generally speaking they should do well seed starting

OMRI means no sewer sludge or poop. Its a step above regular organic certification.

Have you ever dusted your soil with DE? I don’t buy sterile soil and instead sprinkle it on and the gnats die right after they hatch.

Question: how did you get those gnats out of your house?
Currently experiencing the gnat nightmare from a potted plan bought at Home Depot 🙄
They eventually died off after removing the soil from the house. You can also use a small dish with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap on top as a trap for them. Place it near where they're flying.
How do you figure out your last frost date?
Just purchased both books from Christianbooks for cheaper than amazon had them. I feel overwhelmed by the garden this year, and praying these will help. I have been looking for a full seed to pantry book/planner and hope this will be helpful as we have never had a garden as big as we are planning this year before. Thank you for the great content!

No, I've never had issues or put in drain holes. The lid comes off after they sprout

Also, the salad containers are ok to use because the soil only needs to stay damp so you don’t need holes in the bottom of your container for drainage right? Thanks so much!
Unless you're in the lower half of the United States close to Mexico it's doubtful the sun through the window will be strong enough. They need at least 8 to 12 hours of direct sunlight to do well or 16 hours by grow light

Good Video Lady Melissa, I use Miracle Grow potting soil in 5 gallon buckets for my ghost peppers. They do great like this, Haven't tried organic yet. but plan to set some tomato's out in buckets.this spring, also squash @ potatoes. Just to C - IF. I can pull it off. Bagged potting soil is FULL of black fly. It’s in the sphagnum moss they use in the mix. I bought indoor potting soil which is heat treated and I still had black flies.

Thanks for all your helpful videos that you create. Also, thanks for the handy seed starting and planting guide this will keep my calendar a little neater. I'm in zone 5B suburban Chicago, (hockey garden staking and theme). Long way for planting outdoors with 3 feet of snow and counting, however I have already started my seeds indoors to get my temporary gardening fix!

Yes cool weather crops that are frost hardy go out before the last frost
