    Dizzy's putting a lot of effort into her washboard, bless her. She really gets into the tune.

    Adding the tenor bajo has completed the New Orleans sound! Thanks for all of the postings.

    Many thanks, Randy. 'Once in a While' was composed in 1927 by W H Butler
    . As you can hear, it has an Introduction and then just two themes - a 16-bar first theme, and a 32-bar [16 + a similar 16] main theme that uses a simple chord progression. (There is coincidentally a QUITE different song called 'Once in a While' , composed in 1937 by Edwards and Green. It is a lovely ballad of 32 bars - a-a-b-a in structure, usually played at about half the speed of the Butler composition.) In case anyone enjoys a challenge:-
    Question 1. Shaye plays the first theme as a solo (00:25 - 00:44). It is played only once more in the entire performance. When is this?
    Question 2. Who is the SECOND musician to take a solo on the second theme?
    Question 3. Who plays the 'break' on bars 15 and 16 when the second theme is played for the last time?
    Question 4. In which key do Tuba Skinny play this piece of music?

      Louis Armstrong had a hit with the 1937 composition on Decca Records ....I had the 78 rpm from about 100 of them my aunt gave me as little kid about 5 years old. Once in a While backed by I'm Confession. Probably one of the reasons I chose trumpet to play in the school band program and forward in college and for life until I quit12 years ago. They really should do that one Armstrong Style complete with vocals by Greg and/or Erica

Caught their second set in Chicagoland @ Fitzgeralds recently and will regret missing the first forever. But really wanna see them on Royal Street sometime. Thanks for these comment/posts, Mr Coffee ;-)

    They've done this a million times but this version is my favorite. Maybe just a tiny bit more relaxed or less intense-tempo seems the same-but Shaye, Craig and Barnabus all solo brilliantly.

      They've already got a drummer. Unfortunately, Robin Rapuzzi is otherwise engaged, which is why Dizzy is standing in for him in this video.

    • @otpkd
      @otpkd Рік тому +7

      Furthermore, Robin can do much more interesting things with the washboard than his drums, and Tuba Skinny have been damn successful with him, I would say. And also, who gets to decide what is "normal"?

    • @BudgieJane
      @BudgieJane Рік тому +2

      @@otpkd In the absence of any other definitive answer, the person who decides what is normal is me. Or you. Or anyone else. But we don't all have to agree on each other's definition of "normal". Robin played his drum kit with the band when playing in the street, and I preferred him with his washboard (so I am agreeing with you). I am quite happy with Tuba Skinny as they are, and if things change to suit someone else's definition of normal, then I'll have to reconsider.
