Harry was a street hustler IRL living off his wits and managed to parlay that into stardom, that is how good he was. He oozed charm and charisma. He was truly unique. RIP Harry.

In truth, Harry Anderson wasn't ever a real pickpocket but he did run a shell game on the streets of several US cities, until he came upon a dissatisfied customer in San Francisco who wielded a punch that broke Harry's jaw. Realizing that there has to be a safer way to make a living, Harry went straight. He took his first few gigs in clubs instead of on the street, and when he went back to the street he turned his shell game into an "expose" (not really) of the shell game, and he passed the hat at the end instead, so his fans willingly parted with their money.
I actually knew a guy that was the best pickpocket in town, and he was a security officer. He'd learnt pickpocketing as a way of spotting them in stores, it's just he had a yen for it. At one Christmas party, he looted a manager (who'd boasted he'd never fall foul of a pickpocket) on stage in front of everyone - taking his watch, wallet, keys, his hat - it was hilarious!
Really glad you included the one where Harry swindles Gary. After so many years ripping off the Cheers gang it was great to see Harry's talents put to use fighting FOR them.
I gotta admit though... I kind of appreciated that even though he was a con man, he played favorites. Sure, he robbed the patrons of Cheers, but like everyone at Cheers, they're kind of a family, and you don't mess with family! I love that last major con!

A trespass warning? Your phrasing isn’t quite right. I think what you’re trying to say is, why didn’t Sam just BAN HARRY from the bar? Or get the cops involved, considering the fact that every time he comes in there he rips ppl off or cons ones of the employees out of their money. People used to get banned from bars all the time. But like the other commenters said, how would that be funny?? Answer: it wouldn’t!
