  • The early 2000s just doesn't seem like it was a real time. From the crazy paparazzi, body-shaming tabloids, sex tapes, and scandals, it seems as if women at that time were constantly targeted. In this video, we will be discussing the intense misogyny of the early 2000s.

He made Megan the stallion mad at an award show and she was fussing at him and everyone was getting mad at her for fussing at him so hard. Why is everyone so quick to defend Justin Timberlake when he was always in the wrong? Why does no one ever want to hold him accountable for the things he does to women? I’m tired of seeing it. 🤦🏾

Idk if anyone mentioned this but the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction literally changed the history of live television. Ever since that happened, all live broadcasting shows must be broadcasted a few seconds later than whats happening live. They cant be "live" live. This way if something "crazy" happens, they can cut the cameras (hopefully) before the public is able to see it. Absolutely insane how much this one small moment changed the way media in America is presented.

There's always been a delay. Lol.

    • @Croccifixo
      @Croccifixo 4 місяці тому +4

There doesn't appear to be specific regulation stating they have to be delayed, it's a little more complicated than that. A delay has been used in radio transmissions since the 1950s (introduced to get around the ban on having callers live on air, a six-second delay made it technically taped). CBS used this as a 5-second delay on audio transmissions of the 2004 Super Bowl (sometimes known as an expletive delay, it is used for adding bleeps to live broadcasts), but did not delay the video transmission. The next season, ABC implemented a 5-second delay on all sports events, but the NFL required them to add an additional 5 seconds for NFL matches. Most stations do have a delay today, but it seems it is not something required, rather it is to avoid showing incidents that may get them sanctions by the FCC. Basically, it made the networks self-regulate to avoid potential for broadcasting sanctionable content.
Interestingly, the effects were not limited to live broadcasts, as the FCC has apparently become somewhat lax in moderating content on daytime television. After this incident, FCC boss Michael Powell said that they were gonna start cracking down harder on breaches of indecent content, which led to changes in Soap Operas (no more sex scenes with partial nudity), some shows that were already filmed were re-edited, Howard Stern was removed from several radio stations, all in an effort to not run afoul of the FCC censors. The key thing is that it is all related to the FCC censors, none of this is applicable to cable.
Another notable impact, maybe the largest impact this half-time show had, is this very platform. The creators of UA-cam stated that the reason for creating a platform for people to upload videos was that they had a hard time finding videos of this incident and of the 2004 boxing day tsunami online.

I still don't get why that was such a big deal. A boob was exposed. Ok and? People haven't seen that before?
I have to say, I never really got the whole taboo with that. I think in general the conversation about why 'showing skin' is considered taboo and what body parts are 'ok' or 'not ok' to be exposed, is a very interesting one and humans should have it at some point.

It’s still so amazing to me that Janet Jackson’s career suffered while Justin Timberlake’s flourished. The media tore her up for the wardrobe malfunction. And it’s so jacked up that Justin Timberlake kept quiet about it. He made it seem like it was all Janet’s fault. I felt so terrible for her! I’m glad things seem to be getting back on track for her. And I think David Letterman kept pouring salt in the wound EVEN after Janet Jackson was clearly uncomfortable with him continuously bringing up the situation, she asked him to change the subject but he wouldn’t.

    • @luvondarox

Agreed 100%. My respect for Timberlake tanked after he got glorified for "exposing the titty" (a phrase I got sick to death of hearing in high school), and while I knew I didn't like Letterman, after seeing just part of that episode I haven't been able to tolerate that pathetic little bully. But I have to give credit for the show's producers, too; they let the little creep just keep egging her on instead of shutting it down.

This happened because of race. It’s strange to see bw saying “misogyny” to try and not offend for telling the truth. That situation wasn’t a gender situation. It was a skin tone situation. If it was a ww and a bm especially a bm rapper then he would’ve took the hit and the ww pop star would’ve been painted like Taylor Swift. This is probably why bm give bw push back because of sh!t like this.

I think its fine to like the aesthetics and the music, but I see so many so many young people say things like "I wish I grew up in this era" or overly romanticize it. Nostalgia is nothing but a buzzword a very few selective people use to justify this laughable but sad generation. Everything was better objectively in the 90s and 2000s across every spectrum you can think of socially, culturally and economically, and especially across the entertainment medium which is the topic here. What documented evidence do we have to suit this narrative other than surface level? Men celebrities where scrutinized by the media to during those years, and in this particular generation, the western world basically hates men, even their masculinity is being targeted, so what's the difference?

*HIS FACE* as he realized how messed up it actually was omg. It was so normalized for boys & men in the 2000s and 2010s that point blank calling it out was this entire revelation for him.
He replied asking "she give you permission to spread this picture around?" and of course his friend got all mad. So my man was like "I'm just thinking about it like 'what if some lil d*ckhead did this with [my teen daughter's] pictures that she sent in confidence??' What if someone did that to [your teen daughter]??"

@@K.C-2049Question of the Century. They are socialized by media and their friends to see women as trophy props and objects to be used for their personal interests and then discarded when the thrill is gone and they realize that she is a human being with her own mind and opinions that they can’t project their feelings onto. Father’s compartmentalize this with daughters because they feel like they own them and that they are an extension of themselves. Everyone else’s daughter is fair game though. I think that is why they hate when women such as Taylor Swift and Rihanna figure it out and beat them at their own games, playing them instead.
To really know what a man actually thinks about women, you must listen to how he passively speaks about them in conversation especially if it’s heated topic. If he is rational with them, it is likely he will be rational with you, but if doesn’t hesitate to tear them down, you can bet he’d feel the same way about you if the pendulum swung your way.

OK well what kind of message will you not taking no for an answer send to little boys. Janet said no he should respect that no he didn’t. I still believe Justin Timberlake did that on purpose because Janet was at the height of success and some people, especially men like Justin, like to "humble" successful women.
Everything that happened after was damage control to save Justin's career at Janet's expense. Justine said it was a stunt gone wrong and it seemed that Janet had to go along with it and take the flack. Justine apologized first to damage control himself at Janet's expense and everyone bought it! I believe Janet and her team were trying to figure out what happened during that time and were felt holding the bomb.
I want justice for Janet! She did NOT deserve that! Justin should have gotten the backlash for being irresponsible and putting Janet in a vunerable position. Justin should have been fined for that move.
Thanks for this video. The hate on feminine women was wild in this era. I remember growing up in this era thinking girls and women are canon fodder for entertainment and wierd male pleasure. This made me decenter boys and men from a young age and work on myself.
Thank God I did. So many people wanted to get something on me to "humble" me as I was becoming successful. Never fell for it and immediately cut those people off with no warning. Blocked and delete.

I am so glad this era is being addressed. I’m 45 and being in my early 20’s during this time was weird and uncomfortable. I couldn’t place my finger on what the problem was, but I never felt comfortable just being myself. I remember loving Gwen Stefani, she was a bad ass chic with great musical talent. I was raving about her to my boyfriend at the time and he felt the need to insist that she had slept with all the members of her band. So a woman just existing in a predominantly male space meant she was sexually involved with all of them?? Ok, I know better now and make it a point to be true to myself everyday. But at the time I felt I needed to be reserved and not give anyone a reason to think I was “loose”. What a messed up time. F&@k the patriarchy. We’re (women) just people, and the sooner men realize that the sooner they’ll begin to “understand” women.

I don't recall why school asked me to do a pop culture essay, but I end up with Britney as my subject, I remember doing an analogy between cameras and guns, my professor was so fkg proud. Few years ago someone told me he still uses my project as reference... I can not express my discomfort being a child at the time and freaking out about my own line of thoughts seeing cameras as something that can protect you or destroy you. But not taken seriously as a gun. Still to this day, I know the power of a photo or video and I know it can be worse than a gun.
I never lost someone to a gun, but I lost to a video...
And happens everywhere, all the time...

Even as a kid, I always for some reason got bad vibes about JT from when he was in Nysnc. When all the girls were crushing on him, I was just like Yuck and this was before all the scandals he was in came out. The scandals just confirmed my intuition about him!

Holy shit. The clip of the comedian talking abt Britney at the VMA’s made me physically angry.. that was so fucked up.. the fact that even the crowd sounded like they were upset? Like yeah some people laughed but she knew that was wrong.

A lot of these old clips were hard to watch, I had to fast forward because it was so cringy and pathetic for grown people to be picking on young Britney. Also janet has so much class, and so does Beyoncé. She was the only one who seems to have any empathy for Britney publicly. 👸🏽

I wished you would've also talked about Christina Aguilera as well. During the early 2000s, she dealt with a lot of misogyny. Especially with the likes of Eminem & Fred Durst attacking her. Her video for "Dirrty" being scrutinized as well as her image. Like with Britney, she too was under fire for having a sexed up image at such a young age.
