He is not classically trained just naturally blessed and ofcourse hard work thus one of the best vocalist in the world definitely in South Asia. Coke Studios is one of the best live music platforms with great production quality, musicians, vocalists and deep lyrics, its amazing how they manage to produce such long length perfect songs and not just Qawalis (Sufi Songs which is big in Pakistan) but also every genre of songs, it is truly world class, i can imagine Moroccan people can also relate to this kind of music. You should listen to more of Coke Studios and Atif Aslam in general. I suggest listening to "Afreen Afreen by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Monina Mustehsan from Coke Studios".

The stringed instrument is called a Rubab. He sings some portions in Persian and Arabic. The main body is in Urdu, which is a mixture of Turkish, Arabic and Persian. Hence sounds close to them especially persian.

I'm so glad you found this song! Yes, parts of it are indeed Arabic. This is an ancient song put together from different poems in different languages, with different authors and languages and time periods.
Sections of it are in Urdu, Farsi, Arabic, and there are bits of poetry from ancient Indian languages Purbi and Braj. The various poems are written in different times - there's a portion written in 1400s in Urdu in Afghanistan, another portion was taken from a poem mixing Urdu and Braj written in North India in the 1200s, there's even a portion from a poem in written Purbi from the Punjab region of India in the 1400s. The portion in Arabic is the oldest - it was taken from a poem written by Zain al-Abideen (659-713 AD).
This is truly an ancient and interesting song, the more closely you research it, the you realise what a rich and amazing heritage this song has! I'm so happy you reacted to it =)

Atif is not trained in classical indian music, but over the years he has worked hard to turn himself into a versatile singer and not just another popsinger. He always had a wonderful natural voice quality, but over the years his expressions and technique has become polished. Don't know if that is just practise or if he has taken some kind of voice lessons. The part where he whispers are words both in arabic and farsi. The original is a very famous qawwali by Sabri Brothers and is a fast paced track. Qawwalis are often loud and exuberant because they are meant to be played in front of large gatherings or crowds at sufi shrines.
