under recognised maybe, but definitely not underrated. They're all word class musicians playing on internationally acclaimed records. Kamasi has been nominated for a grammy, brit-award and emmy. Stephen Bruner won a grammy.
I feel like every aspiring, hard working musician who is trying to find their place, soul and style should listen to this snippet. Fuck all that over-the-shoulder phony-ass crusty industrial shit, we are here for the culture, the art, the history, the community and to express ourselves and to be heard for our ideas
I agree. A lot of the old industry culture relies on appearance And current(cy), and not really on ability and vibes. I also experienced that first hand where i felt so out of place, that I had to make my own space elsewhere. I think that’s why a lot of indie genres have such an eclectic mix; indies literally defy the industry standards and create their own paths.
can relate to this 1000%. the jam scene in the city i’m in has a vibe that i don’t fw, at least for drummers…..it’s the same dudes playing the same type of chops. talented ass dudes for sure, but they all sound the same. i’ve lost count at this point how many jams i’ve gone to and was disrespected, flipped off, or i’d just get on the kit and some dude comes up and asks “yo can i play”, or i’m treated lesser than because im a girl. i’ve been playing for 16+ years mind u. have definitely gone home a handful of times in tears, spirit shot. first time it happened it took me MONTHS to hype myself back up and believe in myself, in my playing. took a few times of that shit happening again for me to completely stop going to “organized jams” altogether. started a little house jam thing w a friend of mine w an emphasis on inclusivity, and it’s at my house so none of that BS lol. thanks for listening to my ted talk 😅
Sounds a little like Austin. Anyway, keep it up. That’s some BS FOR SURE. Don’t let it sour you to some good open jams in the community, wherever you’re at. But I feel ya, and I’m glad you started your own thing. Create community ❤️🙏
cool to see you here, I've actually been to one of your jams before and had a really nice time! hearing your story is really affirming because I've had a lot of similar experiences drumming at spots in the city and it's honestly just made me stop completely and stick to only playing guitar at jams because I get the least amount of assholes ready to kick me off if I stick to that. I struggle with feeling nervous and not good enough at jams to the point of freezing up way too often because of this kinda energy. you're really talented and your style has honestly changed my perspective on drumming a lot, so I'm glad you're still pushing ✨🙌🏾.
I've done auditions like that and with the same people he's mentioned. Everything he says can be validated. It really is not about talent its about a head shot. It was about the music when I got the Lauren hill audition and then the gig.
This message here really needs to get out there more. This man speaks truth from experience, and I respect his resolution to avoid bullshit people and bullshit scenes and go for the pure gold, the love, the music. We really should stop rewarding crap music that is deliberately dumbed down and treats humans like crap.
Guys ain’t the only ones doin it… it’s a lot of amazing women musicians and producers blah blah blah I know y’all don’t like it when we say this. Also to be clear I’m a HUGE terrace Martin fan don’t get it twisted, just saying he should see about us
This is so true. Anyone who is genuinely passionate about anything should devote as much passion into getting themselves into a setting where their love for the craft will actually be understood and appreciated.
Dog, just dropping absolute DIMES of names. We know thundercat. He knows Stephen bruner. That's so fuckin cool. Just said, "I want to get cats like ME, who have it. Fuck the aesthetic, give me players." And he MADE IT HAPPEN! Fucking badass
I like that he said "I wanted to get all leaders so that we couldn't have egos." It really shocks me sometimes to play with people that want to be "boss" or just have someone to solo over. The music is always much more fun when everyone is listening to and supporting one another, instead of someone trying to create a personal brand/legacy on everyone else's labor.
I’ve never gigged in LA, but I’m kind of surprised that people still hold “auditions” for gigs. Aside from talent, I assumed people got gigs from networking and posting online (which I guess still counts as social networking). He explained how the MD’s host the auditions to get dough from the record companies, but so people also host auditions to hire “budget” players?
I remember t I was at one of Bruce’s auditions you hooked it up for me thx t good to see you You sound like a whole different person now lol good to see you
Bri he is not living I have worked with Bruce and his brother for many years . And his brother stuffed me for some money on a Bone thugs I put together.and I worked with Corning.
its like the reggae business in Los Angeles sucks it controlled by a bunch croppy musicians .....in New York we would send to by lunch for real players
All of the musicians he named are the underrated juggernauts of the game.
1000%
Except 98 Degrees…..don’t mind me. I’m being silly.

Best of luck with your gigs! As Terrace Martin said, "create your own universe". That's the way to go.

Lmao Austin’s music scene is dystopia level fucked. It’s a literal nightmare for everyone.
Good shit. Build it and the right people will come to you!
I love the way he calls out their names.....respect on the name
the honesty of him is so refreshing.
I've done auditions like that and with the same people he's mentioned. Everything he says can be validated. It really is not about talent its about a head shot. It was about the music when I got the Lauren hill audition and then the gig.
tell em Cori lol

Mizz Hill.
Haha yo that’s hilarious. Funny fact Bruce Sterling was on stage playing keyboards behind Randy Watson on Coming to America . True story
Legendary advice - and crazy that that moment, that catalyst has helped create some of the best musicians through a newfound sense of community
You never know who the next superstar is!
love to hear Martin like this, raw and exactly what we need to hear. Thanks jammcard!
Our pleasure! Terrace is the man.

Love his song 'Feeze Tag'. Had that on repeat for a month.
What an inspiring talk. He said this was light but it was really deep.
Light is deep
I really needed to hear this. Thank you Terrace for being so honest.

Preachhhh you said exactly what I was thinkin
There's a symphony hidden in every sandwich
Fr we get ignored too much
Thundercat being the first name in the new class says it all
This is so true. Anyone who is genuinely passionate about anything should devote as much passion into getting themselves into a setting where their love for the craft will actually be understood and appreciated.
This mentality applies to everything 👊🏾
Right!! That’s when you call in thundercat and the family! Haha there we go!!!
That man said they're mean and they suck 😂😂😂
I can just listen and listen to this
Love this!
