    I just got 2 pair!!! I have setup my society finches to help as my friend that has been breeding has had major success. His were tossing the newborns or not sitting on eggs he has a great set up and those birds (like mine) eat better than his whole family 😂!!! I subscribed so I will reach out!!!

    Try using those ceramic heating bulbs. They work great with the Inkbird Temperature Control Thermostat. I use those in my brooder when I’m hand raising my IRN.

    I just began with Finches, I have two Scaly breasted Munia and one male Zebra, haven’t got the opportunity to find a female for the zebra, but I plan on doing so and to get a couple of Gouldians, finches are so lovely to see and hear, they are just awesome. I live in Puerto Rico, we have warm temperatures all the year so by temperatures I won’t have issues but I still will reed and do more research before I own more birds. New sub I love your content man👍🏻

    I just started on breed my Gouldian finches. I have 2 pairs housed with my budgies and they were sick with air sac mites. They are treated and recovered fully, and will all the supportive care they 'accidently' came into full breeding condition. The cocks singing and jumping up and down, the females beaks really black, and they the 2 pairs started really fighting, so I separated them, and immediately they all started carrying around nesting material and looking for a place to make a nest. I added a nest basket and they are in it nesting... they are FRANTIC to breed!!! This is my first time breeding them (even though I have them 3 years already) so taking you good advise and seeing what happens.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

      Good luck I hope everything goes ok for you. If they are still with your budgies I would separate them sometimes Budgies will raid other birds nests and toss the chicks.

    • @johannalee7320
      @johannalee7320 2 роки тому

      Don't keep budgies with finches!! It is very dangerous to house them together even if they seem like they're getting along. Female budgies especially will harm the finches if they get too close and budgies love to chew nests apart. Not to mention their diets are different (seeds are too high fat for budgies, Budgies should be on a mix of parrot pellets and chop which consists of bird safe veggies)

    Hi Chris, been watching your videos for couple years now. Whats the first thing you normally do if there is fluffed up gouldian and you see that his sick ? I try do put them on anabiotic‘s and heat but feels like it makes things worse and you still lose them.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

      Really heat if the first thing that I do everytime. and then I try to assess if it's antibiotics or maybe something like mites that I need to treat for. Sometimes theres just nothing you can do and the birds die unfortunately.

    • @MrAviary
      @MrAviary 4 роки тому

      Just like Chris, I wouldn't start with antibiotics if you don't know what it is. You can give them some more protein because being sick takes a lot of energy. And ofcourse heat.

    Hi Chris,
    I’m new to GOULDIANS. I have a male and a female. Two weeks and they’re already doing the mating ritual song and dance. Rather he is, she just looks at him like he’s an idiot! Best nest? Best nest materials? I used to have Zebra finches 25+ years ago, frequent eggs hatching but they never survived ~ I want these to survive! Help!

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому +1

      It sounds like the female is not receptive yet. If she accepts the male she will shake her tail back and forth very quickly and shake her head back and forth very quickly at the male. Nesting materials can be long strands of dried grass or coco fiber. soft feathers or ripped paper work for nesting materials as well.

    I saw a pair at a pet store. One with a red head and one with a black head. I thought that meant one was a male and one female. I didn’t know that both sexes were colored with red heads. So is the black one I saw a different kind of Gouldian?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

      No they are all the same type of gouldians. Gouldians in the wild come in the different head colors Red, Black, and Yellow/Orange. Both males and females can have all of the head colors. Red is the dominant color though.

    I have a pair sitting on eggs for about 12 days in basket nest that I can’t see how many eggs. Never see both out at same time. Hope they are fertile. Never planned on breeding but seem to be good parents. What kinds of food should I feed parents when babies possibly hatch? Currently have Health Diet finch food, Kaytee moulting and conditioning food with seed, cuttlebone, crushed egg formula from internet, millet, Vita-sol water supplement. Tried egg food recipe from internet but birds seemed uninterested. What else do you recommend.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

      Looks like you are feeding the right foods for them. I would recommend trying to feed the egg food again. Many times gouldians wont touch it until they have chicks in the nest and then they devour it and feed it to their chicks. So I would start tomorrow by giving them a spoonful of egg food and continue it every single day for the next 2-3 weeks.

      @@birdnerd Thanks for the reply, I will do as you suggest. I also ordered some VitaSmart Egg Food Daily Supplement by Vitakraft, you mix with water into crumbly consistency. I will try that also if you think it won't hurt. Really enjoy all your videos and I have learned a lot. I've been reading several other websites and read that if your birds have different color faces that eggs may be mostly infertile or primarily male. Your site leads me to believe that isn't true since you have several mixed patterns of male and female birds. My female is black face, green back, purple breast and male is red face, green back, purple chest. Hope this is not a problem.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

    Hello Chris, just came back to this video as I finally have eggs with one of my pairs and have a question I hope you can help me with please. My pair rotate sitting throughout the day and my hen has started sitting throughout the night which i believe she would start doing after the last egg has been laid but on checking the nest there's only 2 eggs in there and everything I read online it says they lay 3 to 7, sometimes 8, have you ever had a hen start sitting through the night after only 2 eggs have been laid? Any advice and opinion would be much appreciated 👍🇬🇧

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому +1

      Is this her first time laying eggs? Sometimes for a hen the very first time that she lays eggs she will lay 2 or 3 eggs. Its not that uncommon. Make sure she is getting a calcium source everyday so that she doesn't get egg bound. If these eggs don't hatch let her try again and see if she lays more than 2 eggs.

      @@birdnerd thanks for the reply, think I will check her nest once more after work tomorrow evening to see if there are anymore and maybe put a light in to candle to see if they are fertile as it's been about 5 days now, I have been providing fresh water every day with 2 drops of a product called calcivet along with boiled egg and shell, a dried eggfood mix and plenty of cuttlefish available so 🤞🤞

    nice video and details, thank you ..
    but maybe the red light hurts them , i think it should be natural light and not strong , and i think we have to think about the details which make the best environment for them because they can not speak and ask for their needs ..

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому

      You’re right the details do matter. I don’t think anyone would ever know if the birds like red lights or not beacause the birds can’t tell you. But from experience I can say that I have not found a natural light that is not strong that can put off enough heat to keep the birds warm when they need the heat. So if you have suggestions of a natural light that is not strong but puts off enough heat for the birds to stay warm I would absolutely be open to the suggestions.

    Thank you for the tips, but one more question sir, can i catch or hold the gouldian while their in molting season? Just want to seperate them and transfer into another cage.

    • @MrAviary
      @MrAviary 4 роки тому +2

      You can hold them but moving them to another cage can stop the molding proces and you have to wait 6 months to start again and your gouldian finches wouldn't look great for couple of months.

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 роки тому +1

      Yes agreed, you can hold them but I wouldn't do more than that so that you don't stress them out and they stop molting for you.

Can the eggs still be fertile after this gap of 1 night?
