So important to discuss! I’ve know FMGs who have matched into very competitive specialties and also those who have had a very hard time. Seems like it’s all about making yourself competitive and how hard you are willing to work for it.
Thanks for this information Dr. Webb and Dr. Kumar. It is paramount that viewers know that there are definitely cons from going to an International Medical School. As a graduate from a Caribbean Medical school myself applying for residency this year, I have witnessed this stigma associated with it. However, it's definitely possible . Just do really well in your steps and have great letter of recommendations. Try to schedule rotations in hospitals that have a residency program and most importantly the specialty you're trying to match into. Most of my colleagues matched with good scores. I have decent scores myself and even though I got a decent amount of interviews last year, I felt like I didn't prepare enough. It is not as bad as people tend to make it. Just study hard from day one because your step scores really matters (a lot for IMGs). One of my friends scored a 241 step 1 and 272 step 2. Had more than 40 interviews. Matched to her top choice. So I think your school doesn't really matter per se. Just be aware that if you're not a US citizen, then again some programs don't sponsor visa and all that stuff but just do your best, score high in your steps, be genuine and realistic when choosing your specialty and you should be good. Good luck!!
Hey Doctor Webb this is Ivan, I’m also an international med student from Cape Verde but doing my second year in medical school in Serbia, huge thanks to this video, my family is in US and my dream is actually to go do my residency there in USA, so I couldn’t relate more to this video and I do agree with doctor Kunam, it’s way harder to study medicine in a foreign language it does build character and it does show how capable you can be when you put effort and time on something that you love. Thanks again, keep up the Good work🙏🏾
Do a video with how to deal with a mean surgeon during residency or what nurses think of doctors at your hospital. I would also suggest doing a video on how military background helps with getting into med school. Loving your videos Dr. Webb👍
Dr. Webb thank you so much for your videos. Your content is always interesting and on point. I appreciate your impact on the community. I have watched your videos for a while and you are one of the med youtubers that has motivated me to make my own channel. Keep going at it!
Thanks for the video Dr. Kumar!!! I was considering going the route of internal medical school as a way to follow my dreams. Lot of challenges along the way. Will over come them all!!! #roadtomdorod
Going Caribbean is such an expensive gamble to take. Sure it’s possible but why would you make an already stressful and rigorous schooling that much harder. I would either wait or go DO. I find the anything is possible if you work hard enough argument disingenuous, if you were running a race, would you strap on a 30lb vest for no reason? Play it safe and stay in the US
@@rsp1239 explain a situation where you could get into a caribbean school and not a DO school besides a super low MCAT score. if you can't hit the 50th percentile on the MCAT then its time to reevaluate. Standardized tests will come up the rest of your career as a physician... Step 1, 2, 3 and re-certifications every 10 years
@@Bippenjit how low? I have a 3.1 GPA 515 MCAT and have a DO and MD acceptance. If its that low then I would suggest a post-bacc which would show you can get the grades and handle the volume of science coursework involved. No need to go overseas
Hello dr. Thank you for this amazing content . Can you please do a video on relationships and dating during med school or residency (marriage ...) Thanks a lot dr .have an amazing day
what things do i have to keep in mind in terms of accreditations to actually practice in the US. Is it just step 1,2,3 and ECFMG? or are there any other that i have to keep in mind.
Dr. Webb, what was your gpa in high school? Just curious thinking about potential medical careers and the grades it takes to succeed in the education proceeding. However, I understand, it’s totally not about grades. Thanks
Dr Webb, I love your content but this video irresponsibly downplays the risks and obstacles one will have to overcome from as a US-IMG. In the video it was stated that it's "certainly possible" to match into extremely competitive specialties like derm or plastics -- In 2018 less than 10 (out of ~5000) US-IMG's even applied for dermatology, plastic surgery, and vascular surgery. There were ZERO US-IMG's that matched neurosurgery. The overall match rate for US-IMG's is ~55%, but those that do match often need much higher board scores than their US trained peers (MD or DO). There's lots of things to consider here though. For one there's only 4 school's in the Caribbean that have a good track record of matching however USIMGS are from any school outside the US. In the Caribbean alone there's dozens and I've even met IMGS that went to school in Asia, Australia and Ireland. Second thing is the competitiveness for those specialties you listed. Even for a US grad it's no cake walk however of the 4 school's in the Caribbean they have matched into neurosurgery and derm in in the past. When looking at a specific schools match list the lack of a specialty listed doesn't mean that couldn't match into it, it could also mean that they're not interested. Getting 260s on your boards doesn't sway someone to pursue dermatology when they really love another specialty that isn't as competitive. And last for plastics and vascular, while you could apply straight into these programs most people including US grads enter them through the general surgery route.
