- Since I began watching medical dramas for the reacts series, I've found more and more that nurses get overlooked within media. Being a family medicine physician I can very much empathize with the situation. The dedication and contribution to healthcare from both fields is incredibly understated.
Studying to become a nurse is a noble undertaking and it is a career with so many positives that I decided to make a dedicated video to all the amazing nurses out there. Instead of just me talking about nurses I decided to vlog with some of my staff I've been working with for the last few years to give you some first-hand insights into the career. Obviously, some of the nurses are a bit camera shy, which is understandable but I think they did a great job highlighting whats its like to be a nurse and in general about being a nurse.
I know you guys have wanted a hospital vlog for some time now but as you can imagine vlogging in a hospital can be quite difficult with patient privacy and all. But for nurses week 2018 I had to make an exception and interview my colleagues. Also at the end of the video, you'll see many of the doctors I've worked or am still working with.

when i was in the hospital the nurses were so amazing. i was in after a suicide attempt and my nurses and security guards would talk to me when i couldn’t sleep, offer water, food, coloring books just like i was their child. it was those small things that started my recovery. i cant thank them enough. my goal is to become a nurse and help others just like they helped me
I understand this so much. The nurse I had when I was in the hospital was so kind and understanding and he didn't ask questions when I told him to keep my grandfather away from me, he kept everyone except my mom out of the room somehow, and it was so jarring and felt so good to have someone treat me like a human being and be able to talk to my mom without worrying about someone judging us.
Like the real dr. Patch Adams. He went to Medical school in his 40's. Check him out.

After having my son at only 18, I realized how much the nurses did. So I went to Nursing School and got my RN. That was 30yrs ago, never regretted it.

My day as a nurse is ALWAYS better when I’m working with a doctor who is approachable and friendly to me, especially when I ask questions
Always, we have doctors that when we see them, we know is going to be a great day! Even if the ed goes down on fire, it is already better because we work as a team
My mom is a nurse and has been for 30+ years.
She saw a doctor not knowing how to do a procedure properly a few months ago. She stopped him and reported him.
It was really fun because no one really took her seriously and she had 20~ years of experience over the people she had to report to about the incident :))))
It usually isn’t a pleasant experience when having to report an incident like she did. When I had to report an incident that really was a big ‘NO-NO’ where I worked, the doctor was not ever even a bit pleasant to me after that (he was reprimanded and he actively tried to get me fired). I had made sure to go through the proper channels as per hospital protocol.
What procedure was it
I would have listen to anyone with that amount of knowledge since they have been through it. For example when I was was new to truck driving I asked my employer to team me up with someone knew what they where doing and i was teamed up with a trucker that had 50+ years of experience. Even if it was for a short time I learned from him.

I'm a nursing student too! Unfortunately, I've had mostly bad experiences with docs and residents but watching videos from Dr. Mike and Siobhan (ViolinMD) make me so hopeful that we are going to have more doctors that are going to actually be team players. Healthcare is a team effort between everyone involved, including CNAs, nutrition staff, and countless others that are all involved in patient care. Good luck with nursing school if you haven't finished already! You got this!
Mr. & Mrs Smith : I know that the pain of a gallbladder attack can be excruciating!!! I had my first attack when I was in my second trimester of pregnancy. Being a military spouse, I went to the base hospital because the pain had me doubled over. When my nurse there tried to explain to the doctor that my symptoms seemed to indicate a gallbladder attack, he kept saying it was probably an ectopic pregnancy or appendicitis (even tough I not longer had an appendix!!). I knew it wasn’t an ectopic because since I worked in Labor and Delivery (RN) at the off base hospital, we had used the fetoscope to hear the heartbeat (this was before fetal monitor machines, EFMs). That doctor ignored the nurse and my classic gallbladder attack symptoms and did the painful procedure used back then to check for ectopics. Needless to say, it wasn’t an ectopic pregnancy and I was admitted, then I had a nasogastric tube put in and it was connected to a low intermittent suction machine (not fun at all) plus IVs in each arm for the antibiotics.

Doctor Mike : being a retired nurse, I understood the ‘my nurses’ comment and it is appreciated!!! It would have been wonderful to have had more doctors show such respectful professional curtesy back in the 1970s and into the 1980s. Back then there was a joke (now an old joke). Dr. Mike, what is the difference between God and a doctor?? Answer: God doesn’t think that he is a doctor.
I have been a nurse all my life and nursing is a hard job. Both physically and emotionally. It is hard on your body. Thank you doctor Mike for telling people about nurses

When I was considering becoming a nurse I asked my friend who works nights on a hospice floor in a large hospital because i knew shed give it to me straight. She said “this job is hard as hell and you will cry and struggle, but it’s so rewarding and i love it and i know you would be good at it.” I graduated december 2021 and i will celebrate my graduation from nursing residency on a surgical floor next month. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling job.

And still it's one of the worst jobs in terms of payment and general working conditions. Nurses all over Germany have been on strike the past two years demanding not even more money but more colleagues as most hospitals run regularly on minimum coverage (meaning at times there is just one nurse covering a whole station without help). Soooooo yeah.

I've been an RN for too long, now I'm in NP school. Nursing is an a rewarding career and never have I worried about not having a job. The issues w it these days are : the pay -a new grad should not make near the same as a RN w 20 years of experience. Experience counts. New grads staffing ERs with already not enough staff. Hospitals have became a business, not a healthcare facility. Same for long term care facilities. Look at cases coming out of those places. Nice video. Though! Thank you!

Ers just arent worth it for most experienced nurses. After a few years, most move on with “that was fun but i want a break” and never come back.
Im starting as an RN in my ED in 3 months. where Ive been security forever. I am fearful but looking foward to new experiences and learning. Cause god knows nursing school didnt teach us enough.

I’m a CNA just starting Nursing School, and this video means a lot to me! I wish all doctors were like you! 🥺
I wrecked my motorcycle recently. Outside of the doctors and NP/PAs in the ER and OR, 99% of my time was with RNs and LPNs. The most amazing, educated, kind, and dedicated people. Go nurses! I saw doctors in the ICU and recovery ward never, only in the OR or for 3 seconds pre/post op. Seeing "PT was WTC, alert, kind, and pleasant" in my notes meant they saw how much I respected them (it was note worthy!). Nurses of all levels are underrated and wrote 98% of my notes and were just there for me. I thank all of you!
*oh, shout out to Nurse Bill who was there as I cried in pain trying to stand for the first time post accident. The most kind and empathetic person who was just encouraging the whole way. And Nurse Karen for being my rock.

Nurses low-key do 98% of the front lines. As someone who has both been admitted to and seen loved ones in the hospital, nurses are intense. They do a lot of the messy stuff that people don't always notice.
And most people don't get that this job is both physically and mentally intense. When I started, I remember having a good cry when I came home after my first death - and that after a 10h shift and having to be in the hospital again within the next 12h. It's just messy sometimes.
Aqua Li : I certainly do emphasize with you. Back in the 1970s when I first started out as a new RN working in a very small hospital, I stayed busy from the time I clocked in (time cards back then) till I left (usually late so that I could finish all the necessary paperwork). I was usually the only RN for the whole place (evening and night shifts) that meant not only patient care but also all of the respiratory and physical therapy treatments. I learned so much though as it was a job where I would either ‘sink or swim’!! Orientation back then was only two weeks at that hospital and after four months I moved to another state.
What I find very disturbing is when I hear people in my field (restauration) whine about the price of the healthcare system and the idea of paying people to "scam" patients with "fake" medicine. I'm in france btw so even the price argument makes me cringe VERY hard. And they spit on the whole healthcare units as a whole for just misunderstanding the field and the work that gets done there. While whining about clients that whine when they don't understand that a good meal takes time to prepare.
It kills me every single fucking time. Some cooks should just talk to pans and stfu when it comes to social interactions really.

@@siali8683 My first job was a Med/Surg unit in a city hospital. I cried for six months straight. I thought I was having a stroke a few times. Started drinking coffee too. Lol I technically got off at 3:30pm but didn’t leave sometimes til 5pm. Thank god I lived near by. My supervisor was the best thing that happened to me. She encouraged me to stay. She said I’d learn a lot plus after my experience I could work in any setting, she was right. I suffered but I made it! God bless her!
❤❤❤I’m a retired RN with 44 years in the career. You either love it and stay with it or you hate it and get the heck out!! I loved it. And I miss it so much! I have been blessed and honored to have been able to serve in the capacity of being an RN. I believe it is indeed a noble profession. I didn’t choose it, God chose it for my life and I am grateful for that! I think people are much more aware of what we do since Covid came along. It was a big eye opener. I'm a dual licensed nurse (PH and US). I'm also a certified Nephrology nurse in my country and I train nurses who want to specialize in hemodialysis. Thank you for dedicating this video to us. I definitely agree about what you said about nurses. My grandfather was in hospital for two months because of a big tumour in his throat. Yesterday he passed away from pneumonia at the age of 86. Anyways your right about the nurses. When he was in hospital he saw a doctor for about 15 minutes each morning. Everything else was nurses. Since this got so many likes I’m going to write some things I know the nurses did. Every time he clicked the call button they came, when he wanted to move from his chair to his bed they helped him, when he wanted to go to the bathroom they unhooked all his machines. They checked up on him hourly, cleaned out his tracheotomy, brought him for walks around the hospital which required two nurses, the did that even when their was no order from the doctors to do so. They also organized with the help of others for him to go home for a day. He loved it. I am forever thankful for those nurses at Muskoka Algonquin Health Centre.

Thank you for that! We really don't get the gratitude that we deserve. But when you lose a patient and the family hugs you tight, you know that you have made a difference and it isn't all for nothing.
As an ICU nurse for 10 years, I have had my share of threats, guns pulled on me, bomb threats, punches, pushes, etc. But I have also had my share of amazing and meaningful days. Days where I laugh, cry, save a life, help a suicidal patient, make a patient laugh who is depressed, joke around and most of all love my day.
Doctors like you are what make our job easier and more fulfilling. I love being my doctors right hand man, we are a team and it makes it more special when we function like one. ❤❤❤❤

Kaitlin, when my grandpa died after being on palative care for two days, his icu nurse met my family by the elevator as we left to show her condolences and support. That hug was very meaningful. So much love for her and nurses. Thanks for all you do. It's not easy.
Are you serious? I can't even imagine. My husband is fine now but he was VERY ill some years back. He's now an amputee because the illness caused him to lose his leg. While the doctors did help him tremendously, he credits the nurses for saving his life. Had they not been there doing the phenomenal job they did, we very likely would have lost him. I love nurses and will always be grateful to them.

Chris Kearns I don‘t believe that. Surely there will allways be that one person who does but in general becoming a nurse and working as a nurse needs so much selflessness and passion for what you‘re doing and so much empathy and kindness towards the patients and so much thinking and knowledge that someone does not go threw all this to get rewarded by treating that one rich patient. I have seen it with my grandma, I am seeing it with my aunt and I saw it with all the different nurses that I have met threw my hospital journeys so far.

as a nurse, i see how wholistic the career of nursing is. just last night i was jumping between two rooms where i had to console a sobbing patient who was dying and calm an angry confused patient. nursing takes so much compassion and patience. not to mention forward thinking, being able to look at the big picture, and pay attention to little details about your patients.
To every nurse that has left a positive comment, thank you! Unfortunately I've been reading (and watching) horror stories about the nursing field. I've been considering making a career switch to nursing for YEARS now and the internet has been really discourging that. There is a part of me that believes there is a silver lining and that it is worth it.

I'm a doctor too and getting along with the nurses is the key to the job. I see some doctors who are mean to nurses, which isn't exactly teamworking. Nursing is a tough job, they do so much for the patients when doctors aren't around

I just came across this video. It’s really nice to see there are actually doctors out there who respect and value nurses as I work in an inner city hospital and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been yelled at and looked down on by a doctor because “I’m just a nurse” 😔

Becoming a nurse to me is more of a calling then a job, and this video just solidified my decision to become a nurse.

I know that times are so tough for everyone, especially our nurses, doctors, and other medical workers on the front lines during this COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you all so much for your hard work. Love this, Dr. Mike. Nurses are *SUCH* a critical part of everything we do in medicine. When I was a junior resident, I had some rough shifts in our cardiac surgery ICU - where many of our patients are on the brink of total cardiovascular collapse (i.e. "crashing") - and I can honestly say that on more than one occasion, it was the quick thinking of a critical care nurse that saved our patient's life.

My mom is a nurse and I can never be one, but hearing stories from her friends and watching how much she is and so many nurses work is amazing. As a nursing student this advice is great! I fell in love with the career because I spent my summers volunteering in a nursing home. I've been a patient as well and I loved the nurse I had when I was in the hospital sweetest lady I've ever met.

I also volunteered at our local nursing home when I was a teen (in the 1960s). They knew that I was going to go to become a nurse so they taught me about how nurses worked. I was allowed to help patients with bed baths, fed those who could not do it by themselves, and did whatever they allowed me to do. I was grateful for this as it helped me later to be able to adjust to the frantic pace of nursing a bit better than those who had no hands on experience at all.
This popped up on my recommend videos today and I’m so happy I watched it. I’m finishing nursing school in a couple of days and it’s so great to see that there are doctors out there that understand our job and appreciate what we bring to the team. ❤❤❤ This video warmed my heart 💓

When I was the sickest I'd ever been, just woke up from a 7 day induced coma, one of the nurses that worked with me put off her lunch to help me hobble to the nurses showers. She got a shower chair for me, and those mini shampoos, so I could have a real shower. I felt so gross and demoralized when I woke up and that shower made me feel so much better. It pushed me to work harder when the PT came and feel like I could have friends visit which made me feel even stronger. All hail nurses, that one small act of kindness totally turned around my recovery
Your video really shows that you have a great teamwork with your nurses and that you respect each other. Thanks for educating your viewers on what are the duties of professions in the medical field. This helps young people to make job decisions and it also increases the awareness of every patient.
I have a lot of respect for nurses. I have been thru some serious surgery and had to stay in the hospital for quite a while. Since they felt I was very nice, they volunteered to wash my hair (while I was in bed and could hardly move) and refused to take a tip. Thank you.

There was actually a Grey’s Anatomy episode where the nurses were on strike and talk about some doctors not appreciating them. It gave a somewhat good light onto how important nurses actually are and how the hospital can’t function without them.
One out of like a million episodes. Scrubs gave nurses more credit.

Well thank you. And I would definitely see if you have a “teaching hospital” in your area. Ones that train residents. They are much more likely to let you shadow a nurse for a shift. If there’s a certain field you think you would be interested in ask that manager. I have never seen them turn someone down wanting to watch and get a feel for it bc school isn’t easy and no one wants you wasting your time if you get in there and don’t like it! I would also read on some websites “there’s a ton” about nurses experiences good and bad. I picked nursing to begin with well my mother and grandmother are nurses and also like he said the stability, the options, etc. my mom loves geriatrics. love labor and delivery. And have done travel nursing. Got to see Hawaii. There are so many options. You can do insurance and be at a desk or trauma and have fun shot would patients. Sounds like an easy question but trying to explain I feel like I’m not answering you the way I would like to. My first thing is think of what you would be interested in and then find a teaching hospital that will let you shadow. I love having people shadow and teaching so I hope you def do so and thank you so much for asking. And I’ll check back see if there’s anything else I can help you with. Give you my twitter. I just graduated Nursing School and start in the ED at a level 2 trauma center this month, I really appreciate this video. I put a ton of thought into deciding between the nursing track and the medical school track, and they are incredibly different career paths. The team works best when everyone knows their role and respects eachother as integral parts of the healthcare team (shout out to the nurse who said "doctors save lives too, we all do")
As a nurse and someone who just finished my DNP, thank you so much for this!!!! For me, it was the holistic treatment and hands on care that attracted me to the nursing field. For anyone considering it, I highly recommend it and I always say that shadowing a nurse is the best thing to do.

I am so delighted to know how much you appreciate nurses. Very true indeed that being a nurse is hard field of work, but it gives you joy and a big heart when appreciated. I have been so fortunate to have all my doctor friends close as family, from when they were still residents and now consultants on there chosen field🥰 It’s a teamwork up to this very day😃
My mother is a nurse practitioner now, but was an RN for ten years before she went back to school for her Master's. She's incredible!! I always ask her first whether I should go to a doctor or not if I'm worried about my health. People who want to be nurses better love people though because you see many different kinds of people at their best AND worst.

I work as an EMT, and delivering patients to hospitals, I see nurses get treated so poorly sometimes. Even by people who I work alongside with. I always try my best to thank a nurse when the opportunity arises. Thank you so much for this video! I hope nurses feel much more appreciated because of you! Also, you're sooo cute

@@merinachai813 hi merina, depends what you want to do with your career. if you're just going to work in the BU, SCN or Maternity, you dont need to be a RN. However if you want to go into flight nursing or similar, its handy to have the dual qualification

Ah yes, where all the Kiwi's and Brits move to get better pay and working conditions. Honestly, Nurses are underpaid, understaffed and work awfully long shifts. I hope it's not too bad where you work.
My grandma was an RN and I like some of the stories she’s shared about some of the patients she’s helped with. I never realized how under appreciated and under represented nurses are in these medical dramas until you brought it up. So I’d like to say thank you for making this and really highlighting how much nurses actually do.
Bianca Ondatje : thank you. She probably has experienced so many things over those years. I am retired now and I have seen many good changes happen for nurses over the nearly 4 decades that I worked yet some things do not seem to really ever change.
When my son (age 3-7) was going through his treatment for brain and spine cancer-atypical anaplastic ependymoma, the doctors were wonderful, but it was the nurses that made the journey that much more bearable. After 4 years getting to know them we grew to love them and they became a second family to us. I remember every morning for we'd have to go into outpatients of the pediatric oncology ward and get GCSF injected into my son's insuflon, he was always so frightened it would hurt because if you went too fast it would sting him. Being only 3 at the time it was hard to explain to him that he would be okay. Those nurses went above and beyond (every morning because short term memory loss from treatment) making him feel safe and secure.

You are the kind of doctor we (nurses) all want to work with because you are genuine and truly seem to want to help others. My son will be a nurse soon himself and I really hope he gets to work with physicians such as yourself.
I know that this video was filmed nearly four years ago, but I came across it tonight. Thank you for making it! I recently started my first healthcare job as a patient transporter. It's AWESOME experience, and I'm already learning so much (mostly from the nurses!). Looking forward to beginning nursing school next year. Thanks Dr. Mike!
When I was a student nurse, I tried to talk to one of the doctors at a small country hospital about his patient whom I ha reason to believe was experiencing a slow GI bleed which had the capacity to become a hemorrhage and needed to have an endoscopy to investigate and was shut down based on my being only a student and whats more, just a nurse. The patient was slowly dropping their pressure, was experiencing abdominal pain, signs of shock and melina. Also, his emises had evidence of hemoglobin. Latter that day his pressure dropped massively, his abdomen became distended and he had to be rushed to the nearest major city for emergency surgery. It was very frustrating to me even then not to be taken seriously in spite of the numbers and the data on the basis that I am just a nurse. I don't know if that patient is still alive today. From the moment I had taken a days worth of vitals on him, I knew his thermodynamic status was poor and that that hospital was not equipped to deal with it should he crash. and he did. that equals wasted resources, That patient should have been transported sooner so that he would be treated sooner. It wasn't until he crashed that the doctor saw fit to do something. If a nurse comes to you and you're a doctor and they tell you they are worried for a patient and that's reflected in whatever data they can provide about their condition, for god's sake go and see the patient!!!!
On the flip side, another time I was admitting a patient to rehab and taking their pulse and ECG, standard practice in a rehab ward. I noticed her radial pulse was highly irregular, as were her heart sounds. She was also talking loop diuretics and cardiac glycosides. Her legs were extremely odematous and her ECG showed non existent P waves, irregular QRS complexes and at least three PVCs. I took this ECG to her doctor and explained to them, their patients ECG was highly irregular, she's been on these drugs for some time with no effect so she was at risk of toxicity and I pointed out the PVCs. They listened and then without a word to my background, took the ECG paper and walked into her room. I found out latter that day the patient' dosages had been changed and she had had blood taken for therapeutic levels as well as a cardiac enzyme and FBE. I was astonished, that doctor actually listened to me despite my being a student nurse and in bringing it to his attention, its likely together we saved the patients life. I was exhilarated. I may be a nurse, but I live for those times I get to work closely and collaboratively with doctors because those are the times when I learn the most.

I really appreciate this video. My mom is a nurse and I really don't think some people realize how involved they are. There are the heart warming stories and the more difficult ones. There are nights and mornings after a shift where she comes home utterly exhausted. But mostly, I always feel inspired by the teamwork that happens on their floor.

I saw this video too late but seriously I was just in quest of your video about doctor's best companions' The Nurses ' and finally watched it . Super amazing and In reality, not everyone appreciates the contribution of Nurses to the field . I liked that You mentioned the core position of Nurses in saving lives along with doctors. This was truly beautiful to see. I am going into LVN school in January and want to end with my BSN. I have always wanted to be a nurse and this video hit the nail on my views and opinions of the nursing field. You are truly a rare breed of doctors who understand just how much we mean and how lost some doctors would be without us.
Most nursing schools in Germany require that you complete a 6-8 week internship before applying to nursing school so you get an in depth look at what you can expect from the career. (There is also a requirement for doctors during med school to complete a nursing internship to help them appreciate everything nurses do, even though this is unfortunately rarely the case. Both from doctors side and from nurses side who tend to just have the med school interns do all the unwanted jobs instead of showing them what being a nurse is all about.)
