I’ve been a neurologist for 20 years, did EMG fellowship. Mostly clinic-based, took my share of stroke call and hospital rounding every 4-6 weeks. In a general neurology practice, in addition to headaches there is a great deal of low back and neck pain. Lots of dizziness, syncope. Many people referred with vague symptoms like weakness and numbness in any and every location. Video does very nice job overall, but leaves out these outpatient conditions. I also in fact a lot of Botox, Mostly for chronic migraine. In a community hospital, most common reason for referral is encephalopathy, meaning the patient is not waking up or confused. More than half the time, it’s just a matter of too much sedative medication. The part about conditions being progressively worsening is definitely true, in particular I see a great deal of Parkinson’s disease and have known for many years. Same is true for Alzheimer’s. It is emotionally tough to see patients and families deal with the progression. That’s my two cents.
Is there a chronic migraine
I am 15 and since 10 iam having headache every day doctor what to do
@@lunalovegood8774 Chronic migraine can begin quite early. If you are having headaches every day at your age, referral to a pediatric neurologist is certainly reasonable.
@@chien-yeliu7491 taken appointment of neurologist 👍🏼
@@chien-yeliu7491 I want to be a nuerologist and I want to know how many years it take to become onee
In the US, college is typically 4 years. Med school 4 years. 1 year internship, 3 years neurology residency. Many, not all, will do fellowship of 1-2 years before your first attending physician position. In other countries, may be shorter as college and medical training is combined 6 year program.
"Time is brain" explains our stress in the hospital. Please think twice before entering neurology specialty. It definetly can be rewarding but always keep in mind that you might lose patients just because you were too slow.
True, i recommend reading henry marsh memoir, he is a neurosurgeon
A slow doctor is always better AND faster than no doctor at all.
I agree neurology or frankly almost any medical career is extremely stressful. You need to have the right kind of thinking, motivation, and ability to keep calm in order to succeed. But failures will always happen. Shaming and blaming yourself/doctors for them rather than learning and improving is a bigger waste of time. We desperately need more neurologists; there's never enough of them.
@@whazatt236”a slow doctor is always better and faster than no doctor at all” I’ll always remember this.
@@whazatt236Very well said.
I have been a neurologist for 30 years and consider it the best job in the world. That being said, the emotional tool af seeing chronically ill patients can be draining. This was a great video, but you forgot one of the most challenging, rewarding and complex disease , multiple sclerosis. We have over 20 medicines on the market for MS, which requires thorough knowledge of the immune system as well as the nervous system. Rapid advances in all areas make the learning curve very steep, so get ready for a lot of reading to stay current. The reason it is the best job in the world is that, while you can’t cure many people, you can improve the quality of life of the majority of patients, and you rely on your intellect to do it. At last you get rewarded for being a nerd, and since most of the guys who used to pick on you are either digging ditches or dead, you have a good deal of respect in the medical community and in general.

How do you find the lifestyle?

May I ask, if a 40-year-old patient was referred to you complaining of numb fingers and hands with a history of neurosurgery as a child, and again neurosurgery as a teenager, would you at some point order a brain MRI?

Thank you so much! I have been patiently waiting on this video to see if neurology is a specialty that I want to look into. 🍀🍀🍀
THANK YOU, YOU'RE ONE OF THE ONLY YOUTUEBRS THAT ACTUALLY LISTENS. THANKS
No way those Neurologist you named were in my department of care when I was at UC Irvine Medical Center!!! By far the best neurologist center I’ve ever been too! They were all soo sweet, charismatic, and charming towards me. Explaining every detail of my seizures with ease. I loved it all so much that I’m now going to school to someday become a neurologist myself ♥️ I love the brain 🧠
Just yesterday I was hoping that you would make an episode on neurologists and today, here it is THANK YOU
Finally the video I was waiting for!
Thank you, you got me rid of the last bit of doubt concerning my future specialty
I really love neuroscience and I want to study it as my major, but for the longest time, I wasn't too sure what exactly I wanted to do as a career. I was always kind of in between if I'd like to work as a neurologist or a psychiatrist because I don't know if it's the mental aspect or the physiological aspect that intrigues me the most regarding the nervous system. However, after watching the videos of the two careers, I've found myself to like psychiatry more than neurology, but I certainly am not too sure yet. hell, I'm only 17 years old, I'm sure I'll figure it out soon 😭

Hey! I’m thinking about going into neurosurgery but i’ve been contemplating it because I wasn’t sure how time consuming it would be. Because I really love the brain and the study of it, so I think I would really love the job, but the reason I wouldn’t do it is because I wouldn’t have time for my family and just my life as much (this is what i’ve been told). So I was just wondering about your opinion and how often your dad has time for your family?

Yesss! I've been waiting for this video for so long! Applying to Neuro residency :)
With regards to strokes, here in the UK, it’s a specialty all by itself. Neurologists often treat these patients, but in many hospitals geriatricians take charge of caring for these patients. You can also specialise in it as a cardiologist or clinical pharmacologist.

Pathology, Nephrology, Oncology, Rheumatology are ones I would like to see if possible!
My toughest course in med1 was head, neck and basic neuroscience --> went to the exam barely having studied half of the required material. We had like 35 chapters for the final which we learned in the course of 3 weeks which is a crazy short duration! Didn't have time to study at all. Hopefully neuro in med2 will be easier since from my understanding there is no anatomy lab in the second year.

Some comments about this specialty:
- Forgot to mention Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). At the VA, Neurologist and Psychologist have teamed together to help veterans with TBI's. Because the physical and mental side (PTSD) are linked together in this injury.
- Greatest advancement in treatment in Neurology is non-pharmaceutical. Instead using motor actions or vestibular stimulation can help repair parts of the brain. See the Carrack Institute and functional neurology. Drugs they are finding are now doing more harm then good.
- My favorite Neurologist was also my Chiropractor (See DACNB). He fits the personalty profile you mentioned here as well!
Great video as always though!

Hi! Im also considering neurology, but I certainly don't want to be to much time on call. How many time do you spend on call?
Neurology has lot of calls
@@isidorocasanovas9300 the call is highly stressful. As soon as someone with a possible stroke comes in you have to assess them and decide whether to give them medication that could save or kill them in a few minutes. If you take too long to decide then you get criticized. Meanwhile no one can tell you how the symptoms started and the patient is totally confused.
