I run it on a 20000mah powerbank that delivers 22.5w, I keep it in my pocket with a cable running around my back, have had 6 hours long sessions of pcvr while keeping the quest 3 above 70/80% battery, the power bank still had 30% left so I assume I could last over 8 hours.
    Great video btw!

Yep, I have an Anker 10,000 mah 30w battery that I do the same with, By the time it runs out my eyes are cooked from being in VR for half a day(6 hours spare time) anyway, So it's a good excuse to get off.
P.S. I still wish I had of got the 20,000 mah version instead just because why not. ;)

the AMVR neck strap is so underrated. it lasts over 4 hours just until it dies not the headset and it has a magnet to make a circle around your neck so it doesnt fall off

    • @christophercoey7804

Nope, it fails if using Mixed Reality, with or without 120hz ticked. It has failed on me, with 3/4 lights on - virtually a full battery.
Power consumption relates to a variety of factors. The quest 3 does NOT have a set power consumption level, so your mileage will vary with many batteries that are not of a high enough wattage, that do not have fast charging.
The AMVR has worked for you, because you usage has required lower wattage.

I feel there are many factors you also need to concider. I have a similar battery pack to the Zyber and it starts to feel uncomfortable hanging on my neck for long plays where as the Bobo is so comfortable and now I have the separate charging dock with a spare battery it's as easy as a 10 second swap over and I managed like 3 - 4 hours of Dungeons of Eternity.

    • @davem5276
      @davem5276 10 місяців тому +1

Likewise. I love my Bobo. My solution was to just not hook up the Bobo battery to my Quest, but instead use a 20 watt battery pack I keep in my pocket. Just run the cable over my shoulder and no problems. Just note that with passthrough and 120hz refresh on, power requirements can go beyond 20 watts, which would drain both the external pack and the Quest 3 battery simultaneously, so a 30 watt pack might be something to consider.

    • @MrTasselhof
      @MrTasselhof  10 місяців тому

Certainly many factors play in to battery draw. Higher the wattage charge more likely to keep the headset charged... But packs in pockets aren't ideal... And Bobo is so prevalent, but having issues depending on experience... So people have been working out the why.

I have a 10,000 mAh Rebuff Reality VR Power battery pack, and just like the Zyber it's got 3a output at 18-20w.
I get near the same results, it keeps the Quest 3 charged while in use, and will drain the battery before the Quest 3 internal battery dies, leaving me with about an hour to an hour and a half of playtime.
This gives me 3-6 hours of play depending on how demanding what I'm doing is on the Quest 3. Usually 4+ as I don't use passthrough and don't do a lot of standalone gaming.
I'm usually using Virtual Desktop at Godlike settings with the AV1 codec.
Biggest issues are that it isn't hot swappable, and I don't have a halo style strap and the RR VRP is designed for the standard strap. I'd have to rig something up to use it with a halo strap like the Bobo.
I have one of those pads that goes on the back inside of the strap, and that helps with comfort a ton. So it's good enough for now until a decent and reliable halo strap mounted solution comes along.

The lithium batteries I have in my scooter and DJI drone are not supposed to be repeatedly drained to 0% except in "emergency" as that will shorten the cycle-life of the batteries. 15-20% left of juice is Ok. 30% is ideal (70% drain)
Don't know if this is true for the Q3 battery or the battery banks.
This is one reason I use a 20,000 mah/65 watt Baseus portable power bank.
    Don't forget a proper cord. I bought a 100-watt (they didn't have a 25 or 30), 6-foot braided USB-C to USB-C Baseus cord from Amazon too.
Haven't done full run tests yet as I don’t use the Q3 as standalone for more than 2-3 hours anyway.

With the Q3 the battery remains at 100% (checked several times as I played) and the bank was able to keep the Q3 at max and the power bank went down to 55% after about 3 hours. It's a pain having to have it in my pocket though. Has some weight to it. The usb-c cable does get in the way sometimes. I would like to get a 3D printed mount and have it on the back of the strap maybe.

@@MrTasselhof Well, from what I understood, I can maybe improve your information here:
I had an Elite strap with battery, after a week or so of usage it was no longer recognized by the headset and thus no longer charging it.
I went onto the Meta Support forum and had a chat with support. After checking all the details and the actual issue, they've sent me a new one within 24h!
It is working without any software update.
Btw I already have version v59.
So ok, the strap is too expensive compared to 3th parties and it turns out that some batch(es) was/were faulty(not confirmed by Meta themselves but from reading their forum you can deduct that) . But at least their support has been great for me!
Now I have ordered the Bobo VR M3 (from their site) before seeing your video and seperately the charging dock with the 1 B2 battery (from amazon because out of stock on their site) .
The Bobo VR M3 has not arrived yet, but I'm hoping/expecting it to have the 3.0A battery instead of the 2.6A I got with the seperately ordered charging dock.
I believe (but not sure ofc) that Bobo are updating all their batteries for the Quest 3 to the 3.0A ones to make sure it keep it charged for longer. The reason I believe this is because they are out of stock on the charging dock (that includes a battery) on their site while Amozon still has stock (older version probably). All of this taking into account that I'm from Belgium (EU)

This entire video is based on a flawed assumption.
Battery life on most batteries are failing due to both low watrsge and not havint some form of fast change technology.
Your tests assume that all usage is the same re consumption/burn rate. That absolutely is NOT how the Quest 3 works.
Take any of your tests, and re-test using Mixed Reality modes.
You will find entirely differing results!
    Many factors affect battery rate:
    Mixed reality - huge draw
    120hz versus 90hz - significant
passthrough versus VR home environments - can make a difference
Hand tracking on - small difference
    Brightness level - a difference.
The type of app makes a difference re rendering load.
A 2hr battery can be reduced to around an hour from Mixed Reality alone!!!
Differing case uses - differing results!
    Analogy:
    Imagin:
the Quest 3 is a bath
battery is water in the bath
It doesn't matter how big any resovoir is. A resovoir could be thebsize of the USA, the bath would still run dry, if the pipe from the resovoir to the bath is akin to a dripoing tap, and the battery consumption rate is akin to a massive hole in the bath.
^ In that analogy the bath runs dry.
The Quest 3 dies before many batteries can transfer their power to the headset.
And it happens in ways your test doesn't show!
I promise you ALL your test data is nonsense!
Repeat any and all tests, and run mixed reality - bye bye to your results, same goes with the ither factors.
Zyber - you mentioned the size of the battery - Not relevant. ONLY relevence is transfer/charge rate speed.
ONLY wattage and fast charge are factors.
Bobo VR batteries can die in about 20 mins or less, the headset csn die when those batteries are full!
Also there isn't one bobo battery.
IF you look on the back, younwill find that there are two different types of bobo batteries in terms of wattage.
    The bottom line is simple.
The official elite battery works, so to do high quality power banks with 20 watts and above, that have fast/PD charging.

I do advise I chose a power hungry app specifically in max setting to tax the draw and system. I also stayed consistent with all tests on similar play and power usage to remove the variables of the headset itself.
Yes battery life and length and ability to charge will vary greatly depending on the experience you are using the Quest 3 for.
Meta's solution to the battery/charge problem will be an optional nerf mode of the Quest performance to prolong battery life... In upcoming v59... Not exactly ideal...

      @@MrTasselhof -
Try any of your tests again and run 120hz and Mixed Reality the whole time.
I promise you, all your times will be completely different. It will cut your times down massively.
With some batteries, the headset will die/switch off, and when you check the battery it will still be full, be three quarter full or half full etc. The reason for that, is the speed of the power drawn on the headset is much faster, than the speed than your battery can out charge into the headset.
Other batteries will simply expire MUCH faster than your testing suggests.
      Use case is EVERYTHING!!!
There ARE answers to the problem.
The answer relates to wattage and fast charge technology.
Meta are guilty of not informing the public or 3rd party manufacturers of the minimum spec technology required to adequately/appropriately work with their headset.
The official Meta Elite battery works! No surprise there! They knew their own minimum spec 😂
The other options that work are decently high wattage power banks with fast charging and PD. Minimum 18-20 watt with fast charging and PD, to be better yet around 25 watt, fast charging and PD. Why that much? The exact figure of max battery consumption is unknown to the public, but it is thought that the Quest 2 can accept up to around 22 watts, perhaps a little more when it is shut down (17-18watts otherwise) so a little more wattage could help charge quicker in certain scenarios. Why fast charging? Because this may be what the elite battery is using. Because it will help charge your power bank faster once it is drained, which can also get you back playing sooner. Why PD protocol? Because this protocol also helps to prevent over charging.
Two options then, the official elite battery or a power bank with the technology that I have detailed.
The downside with the elite is the battery doesn't give the player a huge amount of play-time as the battery capacity is relatively small. The upside is it works and is also a very comfortable strap and way to wear a battery.
A relevant power bank can perfectly power the Quest 3 for many,. many hours if it meets the spec I mention and the capacity is high enough. The downside is having to wear it in a pocket, or somehow attaching it to a battery strap - so comfort may be an issue.
I have not detailed all this for some schadenfreude, or to be awful. I am sorry for everyone that Meta have withheld the required minimum specs from us all.
You did your best with the battery tests, it's an honest endeavour and so long as people only use the Quest 3 without settings that push the system your data does carry in certain regards.
Anyway I am trying to explain the situation as it stands, and I guess a certain shock value was required so that people realise how bad this is from Meta.
Apols y'know - I just want everyone to see it for how it is.
Maybe another video testing the elite strap and a power bank with the specs I mention, run that next to any of the other batteries with Mixed Reality on the whole time alongside 120hz mode.
That would give you solid content, another video and I know you have been trying to help everyone - so that would maybe be a win-win scenario?
      Best of!

    • @robmoore2625

Strangely enough, batteries are under the most strain when they're fully charged or completely empty. The real sweet spot for a battery is 50 per cent charge as that means that half of its moveable lithium ions are in the lithium cobalt oxide layer and the other half are in the graphite layer. This equilibrium puts the least amount of strain on the battery, and extends the number of charge cycles it can withstand before degrading.

    • @robmoore2625
      @robmoore2625 10 місяців тому +2

So really, if you were super-keen on keeping your battery living as long as possible, you should keep its charge between 20 and 80 per cent. This means that it spends as little time as possible with lots of lithium ions crammed into either layer, a situation which causes the layers to expand, putting physical strain on them.

The take from that is that only a minimum of 25W will keep the device charging & running till the external pack is used is used. Having only 20W or less will still put deep cycles on the main battery - the one that is hard to replace.

So the big question is- Is it even possible to change the Quest 3 to, or maintain at, 100% while playing?
Would the included 18W wall wort do it under the same conditions? How many watts does the Quest 3 "ask for" while playing? Could it be a thermal issue where the Quest 3 only pulls say, 10 watts, while in use to avoid overheating? I'll buy one after those questions are answered and/ or all the problems have been worked out...
This reminds me of when the Quest 1 came out and had problems changing while in use. I'm hoping it will be possible to maintain a charge with the Quest 3, and Meta built it with enough thermal headroom to keep from throttling performance during prolonged use.

    • @MrTasselhof
      @MrTasselhof  10 місяців тому +1

All valid questions... in general the Quest 3 needs 18w+ of charging output to maintain (relatively) under full load/use. Higher wattage charger will generally lead to more likely battery maintained. Meta is releasing an option feature in v59 that you can toggle to "prolong battery life" by throttling performance. I am sure there are other tweaks that can be made that hopefully don't sacrifice too much performance for longer battery/lower wattage use. BUT... the easiest way to prolong your battery and lessen charging requirements is to lower the screen brightness.

      @Wooskii1 10 місяців тому

@@Resist4 Yeah, that's a really good point that I somehow spaced out on.
If it's actually designed to stay at 50 to 60% while connected to power (a common feature for laptops, under power settings), well that would definitely explain some of the reported "issues" of the Quest 3 draining with a battery pack. However it doesn't explain the reports of the Quest fully draining before the external battery, or the most concerning- shutting down around 30% power, which sounds like a thermal problem.

Straight to the point question: how long would it last if you were playing a game over AirLink, Virtual Desktop, Steam Link, etc.?
Explanation: Everyone has been saying that the quest 3 is super power consuming with the games they're playing. I'm not new to VR, but this is the first headset that I own myself (I kept borrowing a friend's), so I don't have any native quest store games yet, I've just been using Virtual Desktop to play the VR supported games and VR mods I have on steam. I've been getting a pretty good average of about 95-ish minutes before I get notified about the low battery (medium brightness and volume, hand and body tracking turned off, 120 hz also turned off). Another thing that confused me is that people were saying that the q3 was still losing battery even when plugged in with the cord and adapter that it came in but when I played while plugged in I wasn't losing, in fact I was gaining battery. Likely because VD doesn't use a lot of power in the first place, just transmitting tracking and input data over wifi to a pc.

    • @MrTasselhof
      @MrTasselhof  10 місяців тому +1

The 1 Bobo gave an extra hour of play... Essentially to breaks down to about 1 hour per 5k of extra play... So two Bobo would give you 3.5 hrs of play... BUT... That is ONLY if the 1st Bobo can keep the battery percentage of the Quest up/steady... Which it did not in my test... The Bobo delayed the drain of the Q3 to give the extra hour, but both died at about the same time, so you wouldn't have been able to swap to another Bobo and keep playing... Because the headset would be out of juice as well. Verses the Zyber and Carina both kept the Q3 battery above 70% which does allow for an external battery swap and continued play.

@@MrTasselhof I've somewhere it's delivered with a 18w charger but it can support up to 45w fast charge, isn't it ? So couldn't we use a 64w battery to keep the quest fully charged during play ?

Technically yes, just needs to have circuitry for variable/fast charging

Test of bobovr was useless as you failed to tell us witch of the bobovr batteries you used. There are two different bobovr batteries.

The ridiculous battery life of the Quest 3 should be enough for EACH AND EVERY UA-camR reviewing it to NOT recommend it to the audience. It's laughable that we have to dish out hundreds of dollars/euros, just to be able to play for a measly 90 minutes max.
But will reviewers do that? Of course not, because they all got their Quest 3s gifted to them from mighty Meta and don't want to ruin the "friendship"...

I disagree in general. Yes longer battery life would be great, but I still think the hardware and experience are worthwhile.

For $500 should the Quest 3 come with a comfortable head strap with a battery designed for it that gives you a total of at least 3 hours play time?
      Yes.
But it doesn't, so you buy a neck strap battery with extra battery for $75 so you can play 4 to 5 hours and it cost you about $650.
      Oh well

You can hook it up with a longer cable and way extend the playable time to like 4-5 hours easily. Or if you want wireless hook up a battery and swap it when one is done to another one. Unfortunately this is the limit of our human battery technology at the moment.

While I agree that $500 to $650 plus tax is a lot of money, the Quest 3 is a lot of capabilities for the price. I wish it was a Varjo Aero, but that thing is $990 with no airlink and we could pick apart that device's weaknesses too. The Varjo XR4 adds mixed reality and it goes for $4,000. You have to recommend the Quest 3 with its caveats, and I think reviewers do a good job weighing out the pros and cons.
