This song is a classic and virtually no one has figured it out yet. Thanks John. You're a national treasure. A beautiful balad that will age like a fine wine with the ages.
The man has been through hell. His daughter, Lilly, was about 1 year old when his wife committed suicide. He sometimes thinks he wasn't the one who accomplished all of his great work. (He suffers from Imposter Syndrome. Look that up!) Recently, he had to delay shows for almost a year and a half due to a skull fracture and other injuries he suffered while hiking. Through it all, he keeps creating songs that define the careers of some of our favorite artists. I've been lucky enough to have seen him many times and he's never failed to impress me. I wish him and Lilly long happy lives. I hope to see them both out on the road more.
Somehow this album and song escaped me. Fan of John's since 1987 and would love to see him live. Quality songs for decades - and nobody's better with a turn of phrase.
This song is about his first wife's suicide and John's leaving California for Nashville with a baby to take care of. The line, "two cigarettes from the package gone, you must have thought about it just that long" is brilliant.
Jim Fitzpatrick that line is brilliant. i'm 49 and this is my first real taste of his work. i love sad lonely songwriting and i've known about him for many years but never knew where to start. any recommendations??
a billion hits songs out there will never be heard. Easier to hit the lottery than to have them published. Lots of talent not enough space for [it] @Mitch Kazaka
My brother used to listen to this song on repeat, we lived together for 3 years in a small shity city, we allways wanted to leave it. We got in a stupid fight, so we dont talk anymore. I heard he left the country and went to Germany. Every time I listen to this song i imagine him smoking 2 cigarretes and leaving for the better life. I guess this is the only way to apologise to him, that is if he sees this comment... Love the song
I believe that's how John intends it to be @ Greenlandsscaping5 .............a National Treasure for sure but shhhhhh let's keep him for our own , one can still see Mr. Hiatt in intimate settings like " The Rams Head Taveren " Annapolis, Md.

I'm trying to figure it out right now
A reflection on 1984. What a gutwrenching year.
his wife committed suicide, two cigarettes from the package gone, before she decided. SAD.

Leaving California this song brought tears to my eyes 2018.

A lifetime of brilliant songs.
I'm 56 and have only very recently discover John Hiatt. This is the first song of his I'm aware of hearing. I love it. I like the laid back feel.
Welcome to Hiatt Land! I started with Slow Turning. So many great albums. My current fave is "The Open Road": just one great tune after another.
"Crossing muddy waters" is awesome. If you can find "I'm Satisfied" from a tribute album to Mississippi John Hurt its worth the search.
Last song...ua-cam.com/video/29prv0p5i0A/v-deo.html .
"Master of Disaster" is another great song.
I listened to him when I was 19, now I rediscovered him at 50.
This song still so relevant, even more so now
What a great song! Never heard it before... OMG.
Big music fans for 50 years. Never heard of him til about 5 years ago when this song came on radio. Hunted down a CD next day.
Brilliant tune 👌
Bad ass jam been listening to John for 20+ years sounds as good as ever
This song is wonderful....glad I found it
“Have a little faith, it might set you free. But your faith’s no good for me…me and my desire…”
This song has left my body tingling with eargasms.....
I always find myself coming back to this album. Some of his best work.
Somehow this album and song escaped me. Fan of John's since 1987 and would love to see him live. Quality songs for decades - and nobody's better with a turn of phrase.

You're so right about the sounds, outstanding attention to timbre.
Such an amazing tune
Such a good little number! How is it that this video has only 9,000 views??? Adios to the art of great songwriting, I guess.
Been in love with Hiatt since I head him on WXRT back in the 80"s, a love that never goes away once you have it.

American Songs, I never knew you were so strong John, now I know
EXCELLENT----SIR----THANK YOU
It has only 9 thousand views, because it has quality but not much marketability. Story of most of John H's career. Though he has still done allright.
What a great song ❤❤
Ace. Great album.
THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT MUSIC, JOHN !!!
Simply a great song, can't say more.
Tremendo

I didn't know that was what this song was about!! {As for 'Crossing Muddy Waters'?}
'Crossing Muddy Waters' is also about his first wife's suicide.

Try "Bring the Family" and "Slow Turning" for starters. Ry Cooder plays on "Bring the Family."
anywhere really. my favs are master of disaster, walk on, stolen moments & same old man.
✌🏽
you could one day sing in Italian a song blues because you are very good @John hiatt

The fires in Cali over the last week or two made me think of this song.

I'll be singing this when I finally leave California...
I sang this song when we left the state …
Why does it remind me of Poncho and Lefty?
Karen, could be that both Townes VanZandt and John Hiatt are both great songwriters. RIP Townes.

Guys, he's telling about this gal that took her own life. Tragic tribute to her.
I heard him say it’s about Kerouac’s ‘On the road’ book....’end of land sadness, end of land gladness’
