    The wooden top of the original flight travel is what made me go for the Enya nova as my camping & boating ukulele. But I did like the tone quality of the flight travel on all the video reviews. I am glad they came out with a different model that's much more resilient to water! Could be a real contender in the waterproof market!

    I really like the design of the holes on the bridge. The whole Uke looks good and sounds good too. I thought the one with the wooden top sounded broader, but this one has a more focused sound. I do not like the bag it comes with. I know the Uke is strong, but I would still get some type of lightly padded gig bag for it. The price is wonderful so buying a simple padded bag would be a personal choice. Thanks for the review. I will definitely this one in mind if I need to replace my plastic travel uke. I almost lost it to the river last summer. I'm glad I didn't for the sake of the river.

    HNY Baz. Nice to see you start the new year with affordable and, on this occasion, a good choice. I have owned, donated and given away a half dozen Flight Tus sopranos (4- 3 standard necks and one long neck)and Tuc 2 concerts. I have had three Enya Nova sopranos. Spreading the love of ukuleles to local schools. Anyway, I kept a yellow standard neck Flight as I think it sounds the best of the bunch compared with the somewhat brighter long neck version, the somewhat flatter sounding concert and the considerably brighter Enya. The Enya does have a nice sound too just different. But I prefer the feel and texture of the Enya. Now seeing that this new version of the Tus more closely emulates the Enya, this is a very interesting and worthwhile upgrade.

    The original had the advantage of the number of frets. I'm one of those people who like to use more than 12 frets. :-) I also managed to get the original top wet a couple of times, it even had a dip in the ocean once. It still plays great, really, must be bc of the laminate, though the tuners got a bit rusty... Maybe it's time to retire the ole black original and get this. 💜 Bc I love the sound and the looks and, the way you keep touching it, it must feel great.

      @besley: the injection-moulding is very tightly toleranced, so if you get the dies spot-on, there really is no need for any adjustment. And PC is quite stable in different atmpospheric circumstances. So if they got the design right, things should be pretty good and consistent...

    Thanks, Barry! That sounds like a cracking little uke. I do like waterproof ukes, and bought an Enya Soprano after reading your review. Really accurately made - the intonation was spot on - something that I find I need. Had much fun with it in the bath! But the arthritis is now taking its toll, and I am struggling to play sopranos and many concert ukes. Tenors can be OK, but I'll be on Baritones Only in another year.
    FYI - there's an affordable ABS soprano on eBay UK you might approve of?
    It plays really well out of the box, with one exception, the nut needs to be tweaked. It then has near-perfect intonation on its Aquila strings, and sounds good too. It's a bargain, at under £17 delivered for the plain one... from 'jumpingflea-tc ' - no connections other than as a happy customer. I bought a couple and fettled them up, gave one to my son-in-law, and the other has now gone too, since 'The Arthur' is asserting itself. 🎵🎶🎼

    Yay! I liked the SUS review of this, but they do sell them so I'm glad you got your hands on one. Alex says they sometimes need a set-up which is why he recommends getting it from a proper uke shop. Very true normally, but with the non removable bridge, what's left to set up? I'd support stores like SUS anyway, because they're awesome, but what about the retailers that like to charge for setting up instruments? Would that be a little bit opportunistic of them I wonder?
    Very keen to get my hands on one of these puppies. Great for knocking around with, I can set this being ideal for teaching kids with and for days on the beach, and for leaving in the car with no worries etc. Great value for money. Tuners are a bit yucky though, a truly minor gripe.

    • @fiendishthingy1630
      @fiendishthingy1630 Рік тому +1

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  Рік тому +1

      Agreed - not sure what a setup can achieve on this - the nut doesn't need work as it has a zero fret, and the saddle and frets are non adjustable

    Great review, as always! I've been bicycle touring with my TUSL-55 and it did take a beating, still good though, frets worn out after I changed to fluorocarbons. As now fluorocarbons are default I wonder wether the compound of the freatboard and frets has been updated. Now it is really ultra travel and neck being one with the body makes it probably indestructible. Still I dream of just this with a long neck plus metal frets... Nova U Pro is a little big to carry on a bike...

      Hmm. Like Baz, I don’t care for the stock nylon strings. I restrung my TUC-55 Acacia in low G with Aquila fluorocarbons the day I got it. It’s my “office” uke, and I’ve been playing that thing M-F every day for almost three years. The silver paint has long since worn off, of course, but the frets themselves are just fine. Maybe it’s the string brand? (Or, maybe you just fret a lot more forcefully? My arthritis is getting bad, so I really concentrate on fretting as lightly as possible…)

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  Рік тому

    • @KubaMroczynski
      @KubaMroczynski Рік тому

      @@tracythorleifson4108 I probably fret hard, that is true. Also probably depends if you push the string perfectly from above or if there is a lot od sideway movement of the string. I do the latter for sure. The string itself I guess is less important as all fluorocarbons are the same. I use Martins M600. Still would be nice to have a wound low g in a travel uke. Right now only ortega Keiki longneck soprano allow this, but has wooden fretboard and neck so less water resistant. And then there is Enya nova u pro, but tenor size. Still small for a tenor I guess.

    My first ever soprano was this awful cheap as chips thing, though seemed alright at the time, have upgraded several times since, but always with concerts, tenors, and baritones! I do want to get a really decent soprano, but don't like the idea of having fewer frets (though I know I can get a long neck). This looks like a nice way to reconnect with a soprano size, and actually get a plastic one I can move around with. When I think about it, I don't play an awful lot up the dusty end, only a bit, so don't know why I bemone sopranos has a few less frets to play with. Anyway, £55, so gonna grab one!

    Hi Baz, thanks for the review hun. Can I just ask about the headstock please? When I bought the original travel Uke from Flight I found the headstock rather sharp on the edges. • @GotAUkulele

      More bevelled if anything - constructed differently - the original has a wooden sheet inlaid into a rim of plastic - on this the cover plate sits on top of the rest of the neck

    • @jeffwatson4908
      @jeffwatson4908 Рік тому +1

      Having had several Flight travel ukes I experienced the same thing on most of them and along the body. I used a small fine file to sand down the sharp edges (carefully). That removed the rough edge along the headstock and nut and leveled the body lip to the height of the wood top. I would note that the yellow colour is through the entire neck as is the black of the body so there was no visible indication that I had filed them down. A big improvement on comfort.

Admittedly, the sound of the TV.Pal is worse. 😆 It's a pity that Flight wasn't more consistent and didn't make the body flatter. I like the design of the neck better than on the normal Flight travel ukuleles, where the attempt to imitate wood with plastic has completely failed. Nevertheless, with these ukuleles you get a lot of value for the low price.

      I do get asked this sort of question a lot, but actually have a policy of not giving recommendations.

Not me trying to be difficult, it’s just that it’s really subjective and different for everyone - we all hear and play differently, but also people have their own preferences on looks, scales, features, decoration etc.

What I can advise is that you look at the full review list - www.gotaukulele.com/p/ukulele-reviews.html and look at the scores. Anything 8 out of 10 or above gets a recommendation from me one way or the other. Higher the score the better. BUT - higher is better only in MY opinion - you may find differently!

      @@damirem5006 Depends on the uke. Yes, there are some toy ones, but equally some very decent ones that sound better than some cheaper wooden ukes. THis is one of the better ones. The plastic uke actually was part of the boom for ukes in the 1950's - check out the models made by Maccaferri - now collectors items

    they still cant get the tuners right horrible tuners .no exuse sopranos all need friction tuners sopranos all look bad with those pegs poking out the side there to big and you cant make them small so why bother .but these companies either dont get it or dont care maybe it is about money of course .and most dont complain so we must spend a little more to replace these .which i add into the cost i dont like geared tuners on sopranos .thanks for the review barry best wishes
