      I think the Pi Faces might stay quiet on this one (and I say this as a Pi Man) The Ouya's a lot easier to get going and can do pretty everything the Raspberry Pi with Retropie can do.

      I backed this poor project, I was happy for 2 days games aside the controller just doest work on some games (what?! ) but you can use ps3 controller how ever... The console it self is crap piss poor hardware quality. My OUYA stopped outputing audio.. And Bluetooth connectivity is there to mock with you... It was a scam

      Also, where do you get them nowadays? Someone else suggested a Mad Catz Mojo? Where do you get those?
      I actually wouldn't mind a purpose made emulation box based on either Android or Linux (or maybe something Intel based that runs Windows... or Wine)

    The OUYA is _only_ best used as an emulation machine, and it's a pretty good one too. I bought the last one at Target years ago for $100 before they disappeared, and it's still used as my main emulation machine on one of the spare TV's. It has an emulator for every console you could want, and its PS/MAME emulator's are honestly the easiest and most compatible I have ever used surprisingly! Its usefulness for gaming is only limited by the size of your external HD tbh.
    Oh, and it's also compatible with most any wireless controller you may have, including 360 and Wii-motes.

    The Ouya has a shitty controller, it's very uncomfortable, has horrendous deadzones on its analog sticks and the buttons are stiff and annoying the press.
    I stopped using my Ouya a week after getting it (which was several months after retail release, because Ouya corporate badly managed the kickstarter and got it out in stores before getting it to most backers, then backers got it very slowly in backer-number order)... partly because there were no noteworthy games, and because that controller was horrible. Most of my time with it was with Knightmare Tower, which is a game you can play for free on your web browser anyways.

    • @hwogrillo
      @hwogrillo 6 років тому +4

      It has a lot of games, sure...but 95% were bad. It was basically what steam greenlight turned out to be, only without all the high quality and AAA games to make up for it. It wound up infested with games like Flying Car (an actual Ouya game) that ended up burying everything that was halfway decent.

    • @hwogrillo
      @hwogrillo 6 років тому +6

      Yes. It is better. Because Ouya was letting everyone with $0 dollars publish their game. Seriously, all you had to do was sign up for a mailing list. And they had a grand total of 0 big games. So you had all the crap games from Steam, but none of the good ones.

    Ouya was a good idea but ultimately superseded by the crazy advancement in mobile phone/tablet tech. While more expensive, most people own a phone/tablet more powerful then an Ouya. And that is probably only by a year post release.

    I have a Ouya, trying to get it to connect to WiFi is like trying to punch your way through a brick wall with your bare hands, not only that but would drop connection with WiFi constantly. The controller, while if feels great in the hands the build quality is horrible, constantly 2 months of ownership and the thumbs ticks started not to return back to dead center and started grinding, got a replacement and it too started doing the same thing.
    Not only that, constant had an issue with the controller with unexplained lag (the controller would be doing fine then all of a sudden stop taking input, then all of a sudden would do all of the buttons you tried while it was having its stroke).
    The cooling wasn't the best either.

    I'm one of those people who bought it at retail as soon as i found it. Despite what everyone might think i found it worth the $100. It had a great number of fun titles and is a good emulation box. I am someone who has built a raspberry pi 3 retro gaming box (both retropie and recalbox) and the Ouya is more capable. The Pi still struggles with n64 where the ouya rocks that platform. It also can handle ps3 wireless controllers which the Pi struggles with.
    It did have some short commings however. It really should have had a infared input. While it could work with hdmi cec it wasn't a smooth experience. Also some streaming services were never officially available. Just having Netflix, Hulu, and UA-cam together easily downloadable would have been a killer app for this being a mediabox.
    There is one more thing about the controller that I'm supprised no one gave ouya credit for. Under the battery covers there is a header on the board enabling you to tap into the controller and use "accessability" devices. Microsoft got a ton of good will for making the special Xbox One controller for this and Ouya had it on every standard controller.

    I've had an OUYA since 2013. It was a dirt cheap $20 used system as it was one of them that suffered audio issues, one of the most prevalent problems with the machine itself... I've recently discovered though that it works perfectly fine when synched up to a Bluetooth sound system!

    I was one of the few people who purchased one of these when they came to market. I must say, I rather enjoy the little box, and have gotten minutes of fun out of it! It makes a perfect "party" console, as games like BombSquad and You Don't Know Jack had the option of a mobile phone app controller.

    I own an original Ouya and the 16GB version as well.
    I had my controllers re-flashed by Ouya back when it was offered and they work well.
    While they are charming in their way and do offer a lot of retro gaming value I personally have better systems to do retro gaming on and the native titles don't warrant me keeping the system out and connected.

    Best retrospective ive seen.
    I did get 1 about 3 or 4 months after launch out of stone curiosity. And its still hooked up to my tv. I ended trying out and playing and finishing a lot of fun pick up and play experiences on it. It had a devoted forum of fans that still exists but they dont have much to talk about these days with Razer all but pulling the plug on the store servers themselves which as youve shown, still go today. All the games were so cheap you wouldnt even miss what you dropped on them, especially when they had frequent sales. It even once had its own (contracted) AAA streaming service which got bought by gamefly. I played Darksiders on this thing. Pretty cool.
    It was the little console that almost could. I had fun exploring all the experimental games and some very solid experiences that playing on mobile wouldnt have done justice.

    Yeah, I was interested in the Ouya back in the day but newver got one. Seems like they're worth getting nowadays! I think it was John Hancock who said that it makes a mean little emulation console and easier to set up than a Raspberry Pi, if I do say so myself!
    I still have to say, my dream phone would still be a reboot of the Sony Xperia Play.
    To be honest, if I ran a brand new independent mobile phone manufacturer, I'd release two mobile phones.
    The GeoGame phone! A spiritual successor to the Xperia Play with a slidey up screen exposing game controls and with a special game store for games guaranteed to work with the gamepad! And maybe licence it out to SNK, have it sold as the Neo Geo Pocket Phone, with select boot screens either based on the Neo Geo or the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
    The GeoWork phone! Kinda like the Planet Gemini, but with Nokia 9000 style buttons on the outside, simple display, keypad. Don't who I'd licence that out to...
    Both running Android (of course) and no bloody Joy Launcher (spit)

    I seem to remember talk of them releasing yearly upgrades to the hardware being a cause for concern and possibly harming sales. It's a shame that the only real alternative we have to the Ouya these days - other than a smart phone, MHL cable and bluetooth controller - are dodgy Chinese media players with jailbroken Android and who knows what kind of software running in the background.

    I don't think the screen size is the issue cause you play a lot of handhelds. I thought about this too and wondered why I like handhelds but not playing games on my phone... dedicated button inputs for controls are the thing I could think of. I hate playing on the screen I'm holding and pressing it at the same time.

    While I did not pick up the Ouya, I picked up one of it's successors the Mad Catz M.O.J.O. which used the Ouya marketplace and as completely compatible. Like the ouya it was super easy to hack and sideload apps & games.
    I personally do not get the hate as while Android games are not AAA there are quite a lot of GOOD games to choose from, One of my favorites is Maldita Castilla which is a love letter to Ghouls & Ghosts.
    The second upside of the Ouya and it's successors is that they make actually quite good budget emulation stations.
    For the price of less than most retail games, you can have a small emulation console with storage on board, a good controller, and all the cables right out of the box.
    The Raspberry Pi 3B+ might be more powerful but you need to buy storage, HDMI cables, controllers, and a power cable to get there. With the Ouya, Razer's follow-up or the M.O.J.O. you don't.
    Just plug it in power it up and away you go.

It matched my casual gaming style. I still have it, and I'm not getting rid of it. Frankly, I never really understood the hatred for it. Yeah, it's not a Triple-A gaming platform; but then, it never professed itself to be one. Whatever.

    The triggers on the pad are awful things imho. I picked one up recently for twenty quid and filled it with emulators. Some input lag on certain emulators unfortunately..

    I have to say Bomb Squad is by far the best game on this system. With up to 8 players local and allowing you to use PS3 controllers, Plugged in USB controllers and your Smart Phone ya can't beat it.

    I appreciate an encouraging review for this system as I still look fondly at my little android box. And thank you for showing some nice looking games. A few of my favorite (non-exclusive) ouya games are Ittle Dew, Clark, and Shadow Blade.
    If you continue to feature it, I can recommend a future topic. There are a lot of couch competitive multiplayer games on the ouya. Some were even good enough that they were ported from the ouya to the PS4 if you can believe it! If you talked about them you could then discuss the ability of the system to accept several other brands of bluetooth controllers. I don't like the stock controller as much as you, but I think it is at least serviceable, but my second player can use a DualShock 3.
    I had every intention of playing my ouya last week, but ran short of time. After watching your vid, I *must* make time soon! I am fearful that sometime soon the ouya store will close abruptly.

    When the thing came out I asked who wants to play phone games on their tv. If I remember it right the only people that wanted to buy the thing intended to mod or hack it and were never going to purchase any mobile games from the ouya store.

    I bought my Ouya 3 or 4 years ago. Game had it for £80 new, and I was gifted a £60 voucher with nothing to spend it on, so I bought one for £20. It’s been hooked up to my TV in the lounge ever since. Amazing for Kodi, and the emulator interface is amazing as it scrapes the internet for all the box art. Those moaning about it at launch were mostly people crying that it couldn’t compete with the big current gem consoles. It’s not supposed to! If you thought it would rival a PS3 then you’re a fucking idiot.

    Stupid name but it really doesn't deserve the massive amounts of venom spit at it, didn't bang your Mum or kick your dog right?
    I always found the statement that the OUYA couldn't compete with existing game consoles to be a brain dead argument as the point of the system was that it was $99. As far as the controller, I'm not sure why they made one from scratch as it's nothing new and licensing one would have been far easier.
    Mostly regardless of the big crowdsourcing in the end I'm just not sure who the OUYA was made for still? To me it's simply a better option than buying those terrible knockoff game consoles that usually end up being crappy Wii or Famiclones.

      The Jackie Chan consoles, yeah I'd love to have one. :) That is true, the OUYA has more muscle than the Wii. Almost bought a OUYA second hand and regretted not doing it, THGM's 18-pounds was a bargain.

    I've got an Ouya as well, and lately i've been thinking of hooking it up for a round of bombsquad. That game alone, made the investment worth while. I have one of the backer ones, though i didn't initially back it. However, it does mean that the controller is terrible. The sticks are so slippery, it's virtually impossible to use it, unless you avoid snacks and anything greasy completely, and can somehow not sweat in your hands during intense gameplay... Good thing it works with both xbox 360 and ps3 controllers if i remember right.
    I wonder though, is it even possible to get some more games on the thing? Or are you just stuck with whatever you had, before the shut down?

    Just like the CEO said, "there's nothing special about the hardware," (she just seemed like a complete idiot) so, it can't do anything you can already do on an (modern more powerful) android tablet, phone, or set top box. You can run the same emulators on anything else and I think every game that was made for it was ported to other places (google play store, steam, etc.) So don't see why it would be worth playing, especially since the controller apparently sucked.

    • @marscaleb
      @marscaleb 6 років тому +1

      Actually, there was a lot you could do with the Ouya that you couldn't do with a tablet.
      For one, you can press actual BUTTONS instead of having your fingers block the dang screen and sliding all over the place.
      For another, you can have MULTIPLAYER. You sit on the couch with your buddies and play a game together like a normal console. Just pick up the controller and you have another player.
      And for a third, it was effectively more powerful than a tablet or phone because it had a dedicated power source and explicit hardware. Anyone developing for an android phone at the time had to reduce the visual quality of their app by a lot or else it would just eat through the battery too fast. Plus, they would want to keep the code simple enough to run on slower phones too, since not everyone had the newest phone. But because the Ouya has set specific hardware and drew power from the wall, developers could push their games much further than they could if they were developing for the generic android market.

      marscaleb I'm comparing it to tech now in 2018.
      1) It's called a bluetooth controller.
      2) As far as emulators go (which seems like the biggest reason people are interested in it now), they do have multiplayer capabilities.
      3) Did you read my comment? I was comparing it to modern tech. The Ouya is steamrolled by modern android systems.
      If you are going to say anything about the games made specifically for Ouya, well with how hard the system flopped, they are mostly available other places now. So there is no reason to own one now as there is nothing it can't do that things people already have can do and better.

    • @marscaleb
      @marscaleb 6 років тому +2

      I did read your comment; it was self-contradictory. You shared a quote that was only relevant to when the console was new, made a side comment about modern systems, and then finished with a remark about the controller that was only relevant before the console was formally released. There was more in your comment about it when it was new than about today, and honestly it is worded in such a way that it sounds like you wanted to address both; to say that it is neither relevant today nor was it worthwhile when it was new. At least there is a heavy implication of that.
      But hey, if you want to say your comment was only about playing the Ouya today, we can go with that.
      Whether or not it is relevant today is entirely dependent on what you already own. Plain and simple, end of story. Not much else to discuss.
