The term is called "Lock in / Locked In" Once you really understand you can almost do what you want .. Rule book says play what the drummer is playing. Then there's feeling the beat and playing around the bass but still know how to stay in pocket. Think of it this way. Its like dancing. You know how solid dancers dance on beat and bad dancers dance off beat and not in rhythm / time "Thus it looks sloppy and they totally off beat in a bad way". Sorta like that. Michael Jackson always stayed in the groove of the music. Bands move the same way
Super awesome video. Very concise and straight to the point, and this is definitely something that needs to be talked about more. JP seems like a great guy too!
I like the content of this lesson, I like the group setting, and I like the guy teaching the lesson, he gives context to what and why he's doing what he's doing. Please do things like this often, and please use this drummer often. :D
Love this! A part of being a drummer is being able to play with a band cohesively and the other part is to know your chops. Good to see that drumeo is going deeper into this topic.
What an excellent and wonderfully concise video. I usually take the same approach while jamming, first locking in with a straightforward groove before trying out different ideas to see if I can affect the feel in a way that I like I usually stop short of counterpoint though, I'll have to try that out at my next jam.
As a guitarist who thinks he understands the drum basics, this video was absolutely fascinating. Great playing by all parties and understandable explanation. Probs to these guys!
Great video, great concept. you should do a more advanced lesson of playing with not just a bass but a whole band. This video is cool but I was sorta just told what I already know at my level of playing. It would be awesome if you got Eric Harland in here to share his crazy ideas about how to play with other musicians.
randyrrs I’ve been playing guitar seriously for 3 years but altogether about 9 years, bass seriously for about 3 years and drums seriously for about a year but I just finally got a set of Roland V-Drums right after New Years. But bass is boring if you don’t challenge yourself or change up rhythm/tempo every now and then. I thought it was boring as hell at first haha but I still pick up my bass just about every day I don’t have blisters on my hands! Shit, I play every instrument I own almost every day!
FEEBY QEEFU very interesting! Ive been learning both electric guitar and bass for almost two years now. Do you think drums are harder to learn than guitar?
randyrrs honestly, if you already have good rhythm then drums should come pretty easily. Just make sure to pace yourself, if you start out trying to learn some real technical piece then same as guitar, you’ll be discouraged. I just ordered the iRig HD2 so I can record my drums, bass, and guitar (maybe even vocals if I’m feeling it) and start uploading to UA-cam!
hi! i hope you don't mind, i sampled a small bit from your speech for my lofi music project (for promotional & non-profit use only).. if you want, you can check it in a video in my page called intro 2 blending (rdlb mix). i borrowed words like "drums" and "spaces", made a small bridge even from the spaces- phrase.. :D but hey nice job on your videos, really liked the quality of your sounds.. it's fresh.. i wish you good, catchy tunes and smooth rollin grooves for your way. - rahi do
The main thing I don;t like about how the drummer in my band plays drums is he 90% of the time syncs to the guitarist (we are a 3 piece) and rarely to me on bass - this really annoys me as our sound could be SO much better and tighter if only he'd sync to me more than the guitar and let the guitar doe its thang! I am a bassist and a drummer evenly so I KNOW the difference of what it would sound like if only he'd do this... Frustrating to say the least! ...sigh The only time he NEEDS to sync to the guitarist is when he is doing a 'loop' of the rhythm section then playing 'lead' over it - that is fair enough, the rest of the time he should play to me as I do to him - we are the rhythm section after-all......
Defensive Wounds I could see how that would be frustrating. It gets complicated sometimes, such as in my band we are a 2 piece with electric guitar and me on drums. So I have to find the balance of syncing with him rhythmically, and also filling out the space. I would just straight up tell him, hey man we are the rhythm section we need to sync up. Or try and schedule a practice with just you and your drummer, without the guitarist and see if he can link with you that way and start vibing. Good luck man!
I have a suggestion for you if you let me.... Turn up the volume of your bass. Sound ridiculous, but I think he could start listening to you more that way and realize "I could play the bass drum for every low note and the snare for every high note there".. Thats what I would do. One time I found myself in a situation when I was following the guitar becouse I coudnt hear the bass... Then I cranked up the volume a few notches and gave him a V eq and problem solved!
One thing I've had happen quite a bit is bad sound in the practice room. This, most of the time, leads to both the guitar and bass player just increasing their volume all the time. Funnily enough, that leads to the opposite of what you want: The louder they get, the less you can actually make out what they're doing. In that case, the guitar "wins" most of the time. Perhaps that is your problem, too. If it is: Clean up your tones, both guitar and bass need to sit in their own frequency range. Since a guitar is a very mid-heavy instrument, leave the mid range for the guitar. If your guitar player scoops the mids, slap him. Also, if you're doing high gain stuff on the guitar, try to reduce gain / distortion a bit. Less is often more in that regard. Then, try and put the bass "around" the guitar, giving it bass and a bit of highs for clarity (basically the V EQ Red Point was talking about). The end result should be that you can make out what you are playing without feeling the urge to increase the volume to deafening levels. If none of this applies and your drummer still refuses to "play with you", I'd suggest the same as AquaAnim: Talk to the drummer directly and try to explain in to him.
" the bass needs to follow the kick drum or it sounds like crap" He gave a example of them not following each other and still sounded good. You prob think everything has to follow each other 100%. That's the theory book drum school. There's stuff people do thats not text book that sound crazy dont be limited
In other words, you can do whatever you want if you have a great bass player by your side
yea kinda sorta
Which basically never happens. So stay with 4/4, no polyrhythms
and viceversa

As long as it is in time, you can get away with anything.. -Vinnie ..
This lesson will be extremely beneficial to so many. Having the other musicians in the studio was an excellent addition. Top Notch Guys!

And I love how he was like “this is probably the first thing that comes to mind” and what he played was not remotely close to what I was thinking
Haha
Loved this 👍 As a drummer of 3 years who has only played alone seeing how the drummer interacts with the bass player has been really helpful.
What an excellent and wonderfully concise video. I'm happy this sparked a bit of creativity for you. Thanks for your comment, James.

JP is the man. Great info and excellence live action examples.
Some say he's also endorsed by Pantene
I’m a bass player but this really helps me figure out what drummers looks for in bass players too. Love it!
I have nevr seen a tutorial doen on this subject! It was nice that all the options talked about are played out for you to hear the differences in each
Very informative and clear insight as I play bass and encourage my son who plays drums to be more innovative with his pattern selection. Good video
YEAH JP! BIG FAN HERE, FOLLOWING YOU SINCE LONG TIME AGO. VERY HAPPY TO SEE YOU HERE DUDE
one of those things all drummers know from playing, but he did a great job of explaining this concept.
gotta love p bass tone
I was just thinking that Raoul. Sounds so nice!
This makes me so happy and excited to learn to drum and can’t wait to get my set haha 😂
OUTSTANDING INSIGHTS!
VERY VALUABLE INFORMATION! THANKS DRUMEO!
You're welcome! :)
This so awesome! JP is a great teacher, so much valuable information. Please do more of this kind of content Drumeo.Thank you! :D
Note, note, spaceeeee. Loved that part.
Love this video, so many insights! Looking forward to seeing whole course on the site!
wow thanks jp your teaching is mesmerizing i cant wait for another lesson soon or some more clips from this.
Great lesson!! Such concepts.... Loved it...
Glad you liked it!
i was not expecting much when I saw how young the guys were, but man was I proven wrong. This lesson was totally on point!
JP?! - Drumeo may, just may, have reached their peak there. :)
I like the Drumeo bass drum head😉👍🏻
Great video really straight into the point and precised but NEED THOSE HATS!!
Where can we find the live they did on UA-cam?
Fucking unbelievably talented these guys
Cool vid! As an amateur drummer, it helped a lot :)
2 minutes in and this video has my complete attention
He looks so much better with that hair. Looks like that guy from Heroes
Alden Legge THAAAAAANK YOUUUUUU
thanks, Drumeo!
Thank you 👍❤👍
Hey can someone tell if that is a 20 or 22 inch bass drum?? Sounds amazing
whoa wait there will be no free full video of jp bouvet on youtube?
There will be! But we have a TON of other great content coming with him as well.
How do I find this specific lesson on Drumeo? A title search didn’t reveal it.
Is there a way I could just get the guitar track in this no drums?
What the hi hat does he use?
What if you have the opposite problem. My bass player can’t hold a rhythm or a tempo
Thank you! Awesome!
Freakin great instruction. Cool band too
Great man !!!
This is so informative
Good stuff!
man i want his entire drum set
Your drumming is awesome, but...your hair is epic!
what do you call that thing over his snare? it´s awesome
elektromuffin thats a tambourine
That was great
Nice drum drum
Example here is Bass and Guitar always together, Kick can vary; another not explored is the Guitar does that, but Bass follows Kick with his deviance.
Just stated because I think that generally sounds better.
Of course cycling through the different ways in one song is interesting.
Thanks!!!!
Who is the bassist?
This is like how to play in a band to.
I have totally different vision for a drum's part on this video. (the intro)
Is that Mark from The Room?

what kind of cymbals are you using?
Looks like Meinl Byzance series? The ride looks pretty much like this one:
www.thomann.de/gb/meinl_21_byzance_nuance_ride.htm
This seems so obvious, but it's actually really helpful.
Done this before, I use the bass player as my tempo keeper
Hi hat rhythm at 3:43-3:47 was Painful. Rest was great.
Still fits the pulse of the tempo . Music may not be the best but works.
good
Y is Jared dines there?
Was that bass even plugged in? Cant hear it
randyrrs yeah I know. Seems like they’re saying “How to play with a bassist, first you turn their amp off”
FEEBY QEEFU im learning bass and honestly i have to say its a very boring instrument

Ah, but Led Zeppelin had such powerful songs because Bonham followed page rather than JPJ
Wasn't he Jesse in Gimore Girls?
GorcStew yes
The way i see it this is the drummer with the "everyone notice me and only me" sigh on his forehead!!11!!1

Lol "how to play with a bass player" it's the same as playing with anyone else just listen to them and not be in your own worldnwhile playing
Shhhhh child....
This lesson does NOTHING to teach you about playing with a bass player the bass needs to follow the kick drum or it sounds like crap
