To anyone watching this video from 21st august 2024 the part about Beetlejuice 2 had to be edited out due to a copyright claim from Warner bros. Ultimately I said that the sequel is coming out this year and has said to go back to using a majority of practical effects instead of cgi and he is bringing back a few of the original cast members and jenna ortega. @Beefy-Cheese the story was his original story, and he created the characters. He had two other writers, one to adapt his original story/poem, Michael McDowell, and one for the screenplay, Caroline Thompson. But the movie would not have happened without him as it was his original creation...

I mean, it was his original idea and without it there would be no movie, but there would also be no movie without the work of other people because Burton was adamant in NOT doing the massive amounts of work a stop motion movie requires. I remember when Coralline came out and I was 100% certain it was a Tim Burton film, only to find out it was actually Henry Selick. Then, I researched him and realized Henry Slick was actually responsible for a lot of beloved films people just credit Tim Burton for, for whatever reason. Henry Selicks early student projects are quite something, too. I highly recommend diving into his work.
Since the mid-2000s, Burton has been led by his audience instead of leading them. In the 90s, the consumer wasn’t exactly crying out for a weirdo goth filmmaker inspired by Fritz Lang, Vincent Price and drive-in sci-fi movies. But when Burton gave them these projects, they absolutely ate them up precisely because they wanted an artist with a unique vision. Since then, I think societal expectations have favoured entertainment above art (there are some obvious financial reasons for this), and so the demand is now for franchise stories dressed in a Tim Burton skinsuit.

I definitely feel as though Burton has loss the personal feel of his films and like you said, let audiences and expectations dictate his creations when what made his films so great in the first place is how unpredictable and out of the world they were. I think Burton started losing his edge with Planet of the Apes. Aside from Big Fish and Corpse Bride, he just felt like a typical studio director with only his aesthetics giving some life to bland performances and undercooked stories. I believe he needs to work on something personal again, and hopefully animated.

@@AbbieRee I think that’s what frustrates me more with Burton, in the same way I’ve felt with Argento. He’s drifted too far and I don’t think we’ll get that 80s/90s energy before his retirement. Personally, I feel he's similar to Grimes. He was counterculture and indie, I think (or that's what I've heard about his lore). But then, he got absorbed by "The Culture", he became mainstream. He wasn't this creepy, mad genius hit machine anymore, he became part of the establishment. That's issue N. 1. Issue N. 2. is that well, it seems he lost his originality and charm, his creativity. The last good film he had that I remember was Frankenweenie. The world moved on and he refused to reinvent himself, because when you have everyone kissing your rear for simply breathing, unless you are truly committed, you can afford to live on the rotting scraps of your old work, which is what he's doing.
Great comparison, I definitely agree that what made Tim button so unique was the fact that he was willing to create things that were so different from the mainstream. I lost it when he said Dumbo was an autobiographical film. 😆 (An adaptation of a movie that came out a decade before he was born) The elephants may not have gotten drunk this time, but he certainly was.
I mean, that's not a crazy take. He's Dumbo, and the circus was Disney, exploiting his gifts to sell product and push a blatantly exploitative enterprise! It's like how Lynch calls Eraserhead his most spiritual movie. Sure on the surface it makes no sense, but it is if you think a little harder.
The dumbo remake is weirdly anti-corporation , its very easy to look at the movie and see a commentary on Disney as a corporation purchasing other companies.
I was so excited when I saw that Tim Burton was working on Wednesday, and I loved how in the opening shot of the first episode the school is really colorful, but Wednesday and Pugsly look like they're in black and white. Then when she went to Nevermore everything got desaturated and it just seemed like Burton gave up his visual storytelling for an aesthetic.

The biggest flaw is it went moody teenager path. When the whole Addams Family is supposed to be antithesis to bright sitcom settings. Having Tim Burton was great bcs he is odd ball. His stories and aesthetic style is different than others. Just like Addams Family. But by making the story same as ever other teenage drama it lost it's charm.

I remember hearing the announcement of him doing Alice in Wonderland and just being so excited. Because of course that sounds like it’s gonna be incredible. But instead it was this weird CGI epic final battle chosen one movie. Not the creative movie I thought it would be.
I paid the equivalent of $50 to see that steaming lump of garbage in 3D with my girlfriend at the time. It was bad, AND gave me a headache. Very disappointing.
Nightmare before Christmas is not directed by Tim Burton. It was an idea he had and he produced it but It was directed by Henry Selick with songs mostly written by Danny Elfman.

as much grief as i give Tim Burton movies since the early 2000's, i still love his early movies and i have to give him credit for essentially creating a separate genre of film just called Tim Burton movies. i realised that when i was resorting my physical media collection and i had all my movies sorted into different genres but with the exception of the Batman movies had his movies all together in one genre.
I think one problem with Burton is that he allowed/hired people to do the work for him (pretty early on in his career) but excepted and people gave him credit for his films as if he was like an auteur. Because of this Tim Burton slowly Became a brand, which was progressively watered down.
Tim Burton is one of these creatives I never totally felt. Edward Scissorhands is a masterpiece. And he directed many movies that I liked. But also a lot that put me off. I will say though that he is indeed a true artist! He has a vision and a spine. Yes, he has contradicted himself many times. I think that's because he's somewhat troubled, and maybe that's what fuels his creativity. The world would be worse off without people like him.

The third act of Edward Scissorhands seemed to be just thrown together though, like Burton didn't know how to end it. Had a good first 2 acts. But the third was just average and kind of a let down.
I think most people just see the bad animation and the obvious nature of his bad ideas. He capitalizes on idea's that sound dumb, and are, however there are people who misconstrue this as talent. This leads to a cult following, not unlike Quentin Terintino. Both have one good movie. For Quentin it was Pulp Fiction. For this guy, it was Beetlejuice. Of course he's going to re make it, it's the only thing he's got.
Favourite Tim Burton movie? Probably Beetlejuice. Will Beetlejuice Beetlejuice succed where others have failed? Perhaps. It could go either way but I am cautiously optimistic if only because Tim Burton does what Tim Burton does for Tim Burton, not for anyone else.
I forgot to mention in the video that. Tim burton didn’t actually direct The nightmare before Christmas which is based on a poem Burton wrote in 1981. @@DapperManDan Burton only created Jack Sally and Sandy. Henry was involved in the other characters, but Burton worked with Elfman, and both of them put a cast together. Very collaborative between the three of them all did their own important role.
I saw Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in the theater when I was a kid and it’s still my favorite. It’s perfectly engineered to turn the crank on a little kid’s imagination.
It is a common pattern with a lot of artists, it is most apparent with musicians though, wherein they do well with one style or concept and replicate it for a while but then change to try new things. These new styles/concepts are no where near as well received as those that gave the artist success, firstly because it is not what the cultivated audience of the artist wanted, and second because the artist doesn't have the requisite skill set for the new stuff (they are still developing and learning at this point). Usually the artist either then returns to their original style or they continue to explore and develop the new style to varying degrees of master. Tim Burton seems to be returning more to his original style, though whether or not he recaptures it is another question that will only be answered in time.

love this topic... i have always loved his films... for me, i started noticing he had changed a lot, in the miss peregrine's home for peculiar children.... it felt childish in a really bad way. same feeling i got for Wednesday. it's like he lost his magic OR just doesn't care about the same things anymore. his focus point seem to be somewhere else. almost feels like an imitation of himself.

TBH I would not be bothered if he went back to making some more gothic horror movies. I’m a big fan of Sweeney Todd, & Sleepy Hallow and I want him to something like his low budget short film of Hansel and Gretal ( the one with the creepy gingerbread man) with other famous fairy tales.
I was shocked when I found outTim Burton was involved with Wednesday, because in general I just found the series bland and story derivative and lifeless for an Addams Family property. Besides the general gothic aesthetic, I honestly couldn't see any of the Tim Burton charm in the series. 10 years ago I would have lost my shit hearing Tim Burton was going to be involved with the Addams Family, but fast forward and I feel like the show would've been the same without him.
I've disengaged with Tim Burton after his comments on diveristy. As a black autistic goth Burton and his work really spoke to me. I had always felt weird and loved weird things that were not considered the social norm so his comments deeply hurt me. I still watch BeetleJuice and Edward Scissor Hands as those are the movies were I feel like I can still enjoy them and the diversity issue isn't nagging at me. That and there my special interest so it's been quit painful to not engage with them at all.... even though I do not believe in seperating the art from the artist. Tim Burton hasnt had that many personal projects looking back I dont know when or why but he's gone into making remakes of already exsisting projects that dont need to be told through his eyes. In my personal opionion Burton has good orginal ideas every once in awhile like FrankenWeenie or NBC (even though Henry Sellik wrote and directed that movie I'm talking more so the poem) and other times he relies on pre existing work to create with like Corpse Bride. Tim Burton has a unique aesthetic sure but his writing has always felt lackuster to me. When he's the sole writer everything doesnt all work for me. He's at his best when either someone takes his idea and writes a story like Sellick with NBC or when he has a co writer like on Edward Scissor Hands. All this to say I look at Tim Burton differenty after his comments on diversity sure he hasnt been flat out racist but the silence is speaking for itself inside and outside of his work/art.
Great video! I think my favorite Burton movie would probably be the original Batman. I think because he's operating in an existing world with it, he's a bit more limited in what he can do stylistically, but I think that also helped in him seeing where he should really push his aesthetic with it, creating a good balance where it feels like his style really amplifies the material, rather than feel like a crutch for it.

Batman 1989 is perfection for me as far as watching a Burton film. Not necessarily being original to the character of Batman but just the atmosphere of Gotham City. The grit, the goth vibes, the fear, the trauma of being in that world. The costumes were glorious ofc. It also had so much influence on Bruce Timm’s Batman The Animated Series.
y'know, my brother and my sister grew up with tim burton's films and they actually were genuinely excited about the alice movies because hey, tim is a weird guy and with a weird story he's definitely going to be great! but at one point, my sister just wanted to stop watching his films because she felt he was doing everything he didn't want to do or that he would criticize others doing and that, in a way, crossed him off as an artist for her. i think if he had followed his path instead of trying to be seen as a "general" kind of director that anyone would see / enjoy, he would've made some other great films. edit: oh! btw, my fave tim burton film has to be beetlejuice (i'm a big winona and keaton fan lol).

Wednesday was okay as a show. The writing went downhill near the end but it was fine for the most part. I think my favourite is either Beetlejuice or Big Fish. I also enjoy his Batman films. Not looking forward to the Beetlejuice sequel as I do not really see a need for it. Especially after 35 plus years. I am also a little confused by the time of year being early September. Would seem dead on as a Halloween release.

Thev plan for the release in September is that if it's a hit, it will carry over to October. Plus, once September hits, people start thinking "Fall", "Autumn" and "Halloween". I do agree an October release would have been more ideal. The original was released on March 30th, 1988, right at the beginning of Spring.
Tim Burton to me is one of the great directors. The stuff of his I like I really like and the stuff I am more luke warm about I think overal is still really good (with the exception of Dumbo, though I blame Disney for that) I even rank his version of the chocolate factory above the first as its more accurate to the books and even if deep down I do prefer the first movie in many ways I respect being a bit more true to the source material. In regards to him doing Bettle Juice 2, im not that surprised. What many of us forget is that artists dont have the luxery of only being creative when inspiration strikes them but having to still do artistic work at all times and that can be a drain on anyone no matter how creative you are. I mean just look at James Camron and Ridley Scott. Fantastic movies under there belt, but also dog shit. I think it is inevitable for any creative person to fall back to their previous work as you cant just keep making banger after banger, eventually culture will change and youll find yourself out of it. I do hope that BJ2 will be great but I am a bit more cautious on its quality, though I think at worst it will still be better then Dumbo.

In the original "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" Charlie didn't give back a drink he and his grandfather ingested; he gave back the Everlasting Gobstopper. For "Dumbo", the drunk elephants might have been removed as a requirement by Disney. Practical can only go so much

Burton's Batman is like no other portrayal in any medium of pop culture, that being Comics, Film,Animation, Video Games. And because of that, it is the worst incarnation of the character, don't get me wrong. I grew up with Batman (1989) & Batman Returns (1992) and still enjoy revisiting them, but Burton is someone that doesn't understand Batman, let alone likes him. My personal favourite of his Filmography are Ed Wood (1994) & Big Eyes (2014)
Burton has an extraordinary imagination. His movies have always been some of my favorites. He has some hits and misses with pre existing story that he adapts. But his biggest strength is when he writes original, personal stories. With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice coming out this September, I hope it lived up to the lore of the original story and Carrie’s some of that same nostalgic magic.

6:56 Correction - Burton did some TV work pre-“Wednesday”. From “Faerie Tale Theatre” (R.I.P. Shelley) to even an internet cartoon based on his character, “Stainboy” and even an unproduced Wizard of Oz show.
saying "no CGI" is a deliberate marketing gimmick by the studios to get free marketing from "[insert movie here] is going all practical FX!" articles. They do use CG but it's meant to be invisible, so "no CGI" is actually just "invisible CGI".
Maybe younger person would not get that but i think this movie was suppose to be meeting after years and homage to the first part - mostly nostalgic. He is 66 no wonder he changed his mind since he was 20
Just want to throw out a correction: I find it very odd to refer to his rendition of Charlie and the Chocolate factory as lacking respect for the source material. I find it especially funny considering the 70s movie was forbidden from using the charlie & the chocolate factory name because it was so far removed from the original that Roald Dahl didn't want them using his name. After his passing, during the production of Burton's film, Dahl's widow gave them permission to use the IPs name because it was so much closer to the source material. Just find it a little ridiculous to classify the film as disrespectful to its source material, when of the the two notable adaptations, when it was the only one allowed to use the actual name of the property 🤷

I did know that the nightmare before Christmas was directed by Henry Selick but forgot to mention it in the video, I kept the film in because it was based on burtons poem and burton was a producer on the film. Favorite Burton films are Beetlejuice, Batrman & Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands & Sleepy Hollow. I also love Mars Attacks and both his live action short and full length stop action animated versions of Frankeweenie. His whole catalog of films, I don't dislike any though.

I really want a protest movement where everyone boycotts one of these sequels. Everyone says they're sick of lazy sequels but they still go and see them.
I would probably say Batman and Beetlejuice. But people sem to forget Batman Returns, which I think an excellent film as well, in some ways more Burton-esque than the first one, especially because he had more creative control. If things hadnt soured between him and Warner Brothers because it didnt make as much money (even though it still did well), he had some interesting plans for the third film. Another honorable mention for me is Sweeney Todd. Its definitely an odd one, but I think only Burton could have pulled it off. I always forget also that he and his muse Helena Bonham-Carter were together for close to 15 years and had two kids together. Their split in 2014 was apparently pretty rough and I think that really affected him for a time. Maybe Wednesday was what he needed to get his juices flowing again. Perhaps doing something different (TV) gave him perspective and confidence to be good with doing the sequel for Beetlejuice. Great video as always.

I think beetlejuice 2 will be as good as the original. It will be as good as Batman and Batman returns. Michael Keaton is back as beetlejuice, Winona Ryder is back as Lydia deetz, Catherine O’Hara is back as Delia deetz, Willem Dafoe is in it, Danny Devito, Jenna Ortega, etc. Plus Tim Burton is back and there is no cgi. Hopefully it will be a lot better than the flash even though Michael Keaton returning as Batman was the best part of the film even though it went downhill from there after his Batman dies.
ive touched on this in my own video essays, and maybe i have a specific interest in scriptwriters, but i think the basic crux of the issue is that, as burton himself has said, he doesnt know a good screenplay from a bad one. the best movies of his are the ones where he works with writers who can expand on burtons own scattered ideas and self-interest and work them into a satisfying cohesive whole. the fact that he worked with writers like john august and daniel waters and caroline thompson and scott alexander and larry karaszewski more than once shows that these were the writers he felt confident in to tell his own stories, and probably with whom he gelled the best. writers like jane goldman and ehren kruger and linda woolverton, probably were studio mandated writers and "supposed to help communicate burtons style to a wider audience", and told what they wanted from disney and the other studios (probably more child friendly stuff, more female empowerment, funnier scenes, action scenes, etc). i find it funny you mentioned a series of unfortunate events and addams family though, as both movies were meant to have him directing but ultimately were given to another director/producer, barry sonnenfeld, who i think understands burtons appeal but adding his own spin to it. and also, a lot of burton's appeal comes from his work not with his recurring actors but with his recurring art team. rick heinrichs, colleen atwood, anton furst, they all worked to translate his style on screen, and thats part of what made his films so beautiful when i was young. a lot of that beauty has faded with the years, and even the movies that feature it (like dumbo) have lost much of its texture and independence from big studios. i actually really enjoy how he inserts himself in his own movies, even the ones he doesnt seem to like so much. his featuring of outcast characters, or just simply people who are borderline marginalized and considered "weird" or "unsettling" really tends to appeals to teenagers, at least during his more successful years. i think the autobiographical aspects he adds to his own movies comes from a place of wanting to connect with the characters someone else is writing about, and that connection is what makes a movie recognizably his. i dont think beetlejuice two will be good unless the writers and script are any good. and i havent seen the trailer, but what snippets are shown here, it just looks like it wants to repeat what the first one did. the generational thing looks interesting, but that was it. the beetlejuice character himself does not really work nowadays, i think. jenna ortega will be very good in it, though, as she often is. sorry for the long comment, but im really fascinated with analysis of burton's work (obviously), as i feel theres so much about him that can be elaborated as a modern sort of "vulgar auteur". also, my favorite movie of his is corpse bride. not his best one by a long shot, and is clearly inferior to nightmare before christmas, but it really gets to me, yknow.
Tim Burton’s movies were a part of my childhood, I always love movies like nightmare before Christmas, corpse bride, beetlejuice, sweeny Tod, sleepy hallows, Edward scissor hands, and frankinweenie I literally loved dark children shows and movies
I think the real downfall of Tim Burton is in the clip talking about imitators. Unlike Wes Anderson or David Fincher, he didn't just steer hard into his own style of film. He got hung up on people trying to be him. It's less that people got better as much as he lost his confidence. He also is very dependent on his collaborations. Jenna Ortega maybe is the spark he needs. I do think Wednesday worked best because it was basically a 2 hander between Ortega and the gal who played Enid. Even though Tim Burton isn't a director I really care for, I think his style makes him a really great director because, when you watch his earlier films, you can always tell it's a Tim Burton film, and I feel other directors don't have that. Also great video and my favorite Tim Burton movie is between Batman Returns or Frankenweenie.

5:04 This is something straight out of my nightmares 😭 When I was a child, I would have these dreams in which monsters that looked like dwarves or demon jokers would appear out of closets or hatches or small doors and they would start dancing or laughing and contorting in my home and I was so creeped out 💀 The scariness came from the nonsense of it all, the chaos. They didn't necessarily do anything violent, but just them being there, mocking and gleefully doing subversive stuff creeped me out and shook me to my bones with cringe and fear. That shot reminds me of that.

Running your audio through a High-Pass filter (using an EQ to remove low frequencies below around 90Hz) will really help smooth out / remove plosives ('P' and 'B' sounds that create loud pops against the diaphragm of the microphone). No doubt watching back on a phone or laptop these plosives are not noticeable, but if watching with good speakers or headphones these low frequency pops are quite distracting.

I thought Wednesday contradicted what the Addams Family is about. The joke of the Addams family is they are the weird family in a neighborhood of normies. But now there is a whole school of weirdos. It's like they're trying to make Harry Potter, not the Addams Family.
Tim Burton is honestly more “the name” than anything else. He didn’t even actually direct “Nightmare before…” also, as a diehard lifelong Addams family fan - Wednesday is gen z pandering garbage that has nothing to do with the Addams family. They’re creepy but non of them have superpowers. Garbage garbage garbage. He fell out with me years ago.
I think he probably started to change after the failures of Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, and Planet of the Apes. I know he really wanted to tell the story of Ed Wood and that the cards that Mars Attacks were based off of were things that mattered to him in his childhood/personal taste. He also was a big fan of the original POTA movies. But instead of being accepted for being different, those movies weren’t really successful so maybe that’s why he started to cater to the audiences and big studios more to get back into their good graces, but that also meant he started churning out less inspired and more artificial films with a few genuinely good gems sprinkled in (Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Big Eyes). And although many of them did normally make money, lately he’s started to flop more than he did in the early to mid 2000s. Like his 2010s run withe the exception of Alice in Wonderland were mostly flops. With Wednesday, he finally seems to be making studios, audiences, and critics mostly happy again, so I hope this lasts but I’m really worried about Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. That concept was in production hell for a very long time, and it can fall into a trap of being mid that a lot of legacy sequels fall into. The last time a Michael Keaton Burton character was resuscitated was for the Flash, which was not only not good but also a huge financial disappointment.
It’s so nice that CGI and practical FX are competing like this again! I hope this is true and it’s part of a new trend. Burton lost his edge because he’s not taking risks or embracing HORROR. His relationship with Disney made him more IP-orientated, which ignores “the outsider” or “misfit” facets of his style that made us love him in the first place. Wish he would team up with Ardman Animation and do another old school feature about MONSTERS again.🎃 Nice video and opinion.
No way Bettlejuice 2 will be mostly practical- that's a marketing ploy. Producers really, really reeeaaallly don't like practical FX because there's an element of unpredictability in its execution; they adore CGI because it's closer to ordering a pizza. They'll be touches of practical in the movie but I promise you it'll be mostly CGI at the end of the day, including, I bet, some CGI that loosely emulates claymation in order to trick people into thinking they saw more practical FX than they did. Big Hollywood Director Since Batman is not gonna literally get his hands dirty with clay right now- who are we kidding.
i think 2016 was the absolute trough of his work, with the miss peregrines home for peculiar children movie- i'm defo biased but the way the film is SO focused on cool visuals it sacrifices multiple really strong characters from the books. Like emma, the main love interest. in the books she's literally very fiery, with fire powers and a bold, independent personality but in the film her peculiarity is swapped with a younger character, olive, and she becomes a pretty girl with floaty powers and cool lead boots and barely any personality beside love interest that follows main character around. hell, even olive, the girl who now had fire powers, barely had a personality herself apart from being shipped with the edgy teen who has an obssession with dead things (enoch) which is just odd. (ive also got a personal gripe with the way horace, a fashion centred guy who hates anything modern told jacob he had a nice shirt he would say the opposite in the books. come on.) its a real shame, because that series WOULD have definitely fit in with his aesthetic and it would've been really good if not for the laziness with which it was carried out and the plot and lore squashing, like the villains of the whole story were a huge army in the books but in the movie it was like 10 people in blackpool tower with not much of a motive. so thats why i think its like the prime example of his downfall in one movie, not to mention EVERYTHING being done with CGI like the cool monsters on stilts that couldve been really awesome if done practically. i'd love to see someone make a video on this bc if they dont I KNOW I WILL

It surprises me how much actors and directors are obligated by contract to say "we aren't using ANY CGI this time, all practical" in every press tour they do (not only with Beetlejuice 2, but Alien Romulous, etc. so more people are hyped about the movie they are selling when it's obvious 60% of the film IS gonna be CGI, which isn't a bad thing at all, we are use to the idea of "CGI=bad" because of the past ten years of action and superheroe movies but when done right is spectacular and not noticeable at all, like in Dune for example, those to movies use A LOT, like, TONS of CGI, but it's sooo good it's not really important for the viewer; in other movies like the horrible Alice in Wonderland that Burton directed, the CGI is horrendous and so noticeable you just want it to go away.
Big Fish is Burton's magnum opus. Whimsy and magic being interjected into mundane "suburban" stories is exactly where he works best. If he had continued applying that perspective to more mature stories, he would be one of the most highly respected directors of all time. But instead he keeps going back to stuff he liked as a kid, hiring the people he works well with. Stuck.

To anyone watching this video from 21st august 2024 the part about Beetlejuice 2 had to be edited out due to a copyright claim from Warner bros. Ultimately I said that the sequel is coming out this year and has said to go back to using a majority of practical effects instead of cgi and he is bringing back a few of the original cast members and jenna ortega.

@Beefy-Cheese the story was his original story, and he created the characters. He had two other writers, one to adapt his original story/poem, Michael McDowell, and one for the screenplay, Caroline Thompson. But the movie would not have happened without him as it was his original creation...

I remember when Coralline came out and I was 100% certain it was a Tim Burton film, only to find out it was actually Henry Selick. Then, I researched him and realized Henry Slick was actually responsible for a lot of beloved films people just credit Tim Burton for, for whatever reason. Henry Selicks early student projects are quite something, too. I highly recommend diving into his work.

Since the mid-2000s, Burton has been led by his audience instead of leading them.
In the 90s, the consumer wasn’t exactly crying out for a weirdo goth filmmaker inspired by Fritz Lang, Vincent Price and drive-in sci-fi movies. But when Burton gave them these projects, they absolutely ate them up precisely because they wanted an artist with a unique vision.
Since then, I think societal expectations have favoured entertainment above art (there are some obvious financial reasons for this), and so the demand is now for franchise stories dressed in a Tim Burton skinsuit.
Really well put. I definitely feel as though Burton has loss the personal feel of his films and like you said, let audiences and expectations dictate his creations when what made his films so great in the first place is how unpredictable and out of the world they were.

I think Burton started losing his edge with Planet of the Apes. Aside from Big Fish and Corpse Bride, he just felt like a typical studio director with only his aesthetics giving some life to bland performances and undercooked stories. I believe he needs to work on something personal again, and hopefully animated.

Personally, I feel he's similar to Grimes.
He was counterculture and indie, I think (or that's what I've heard about his lore).
But then, he got absorbed by "The Culture", he became mainstream.
He wasn't this creepy, mad genius hit machine anymore, he became part of the establishment.
That's issue N. 1.
Issue N. 2. is that well, it seems he lost his originality and charm, his creativity.
The last good film he had that I remember was Frankenweenie.
The world moved on and he refused to reinvent himself, because when you have everyone kissing your rear for simply breathing, unless you are truly committed, you can afford to live on the rotting scraps of your old work, which is what he's doing.

I was so excited when I saw that Tim Burton was working on Wednesday, and I loved how in the opening shot of the first episode the school is really colorful, but Wednesday and Pugsly look like they're in black and white. Then when she went to Nevermore everything got desaturated and it just seemed like Burton gave up his visual storytelling for an aesthetic.
Definitely I felt as though Wednesday would have been a great fit for his “aesthetic” but like you said some shots felt very burton-esque and others just felt like any other cw show. I do wonder if this will change in season 2?

The biggest flaw is it went moody teenager path. When the whole Addams Family is supposed to be antithesis to bright sitcom settings.
Having Tim Burton was great bcs he is odd ball. His stories and aesthetic style is different than others. Just like Addams Family.
But by making the story same as ever other teenage drama it lost it's charm.

Nightmare before Christmas is not directed by Tim Burton. It was an idea he had and he produced it but It was directed by Henry Selick with songs mostly written by Danny Elfman.

as much grief as i give Tim Burton movies since the early 2000's, i still love his early movies and i have to give him credit for essentially creating a separate genre of film just called Tim Burton movies. i realised that when i was resorting my physical media collection and i had all my movies sorted into different genres but with the exception of the Batman movies had his movies all together in one genre.
I think one problem with Burton is that he allowed/hired people to do the work for him (pretty early on in his career) but excepted and people gave him credit for his films as if he was like an auteur. Because of this Tim Burton slowly Became a brand, which was progressively watered down.
Tim Burton is one of these creatives I never totally felt. Edward Scissorhands is a masterpiece. And he directed many movies that I liked. But also a lot that put me off. I will say though that he is indeed a true artist! He has a vision and a spine. Yes, he has contradicted himself many times. I think that's because he's somewhat troubled, and maybe that's what fuels his creativity. The world would be worse off without people like him.
He definitely has inspired so many! I do think the fact that he’s always felt “weird” and like he didn’t fit in has helped his creative process.

The third act of Edward Scissorhands seemed to be just thrown together though, like Burton didn't know how to end it. Had a good first 2 acts. But the third was just average and kind of a let down.

I think most people just see the bad animation and the obvious nature of his bad ideas. He capitalizes on idea's that sound dumb, and are, however there are people who misconstrue this as talent. This leads to a cult following, not unlike Quentin Terintino. Both have one good movie. For Quentin it was Pulp Fiction. For this guy, it was Beetlejuice. Of course he's going to re make it, it's the only thing he's got.
Favourite Tim Burton movie? Probably Beetlejuice.
Will Beetlejuice Beetlejuice succed where others have failed? Perhaps. It could go either way but I am cautiously optimistic if only because Tim Burton does what Tim Burton does for Tim Burton, not for anyone else.

@@DapperManDan Burton only created Jack Sally and Sandy. Henry was involved in the other characters, but Burton worked with Elfman, and both of them put a cast together. Very collaborative between the three of them all did their own important role.
I saw Pee Wee’s Big Adventure in the theater when I was a kid and it’s still my favorite. It’s perfectly engineered to turn the crank on a little kid’s imagination.

It is a common pattern with a lot of artists, it is most apparent with musicians though, wherein they do well with one style or concept and replicate it for a while but then change to try new things. These new styles/concepts are no where near as well received as those that gave the artist success, firstly because it is not what the cultivated audience of the artist wanted, and second because the artist doesn't have the requisite skill set for the new stuff (they are still developing and learning at this point). Usually the artist either then returns to their original style or they continue to explore and develop the new style to varying degrees of master. Tim Burton seems to be returning more to his original style, though whether or not he recaptures it is another question that will only be answered in time.

TBH I would not be bothered if he went back to making some more gothic horror movies. I’m a big fan of Sweeney Todd, & Sleepy Hallow and I want him to something like his low budget short film of Hansel and Gretal ( the one with the creepy gingerbread man) with other famous fairy tales.

I was shocked when I found outTim Burton was involved with Wednesday, because in general I just found the series bland and story derivative and lifeless for an Addams Family property. Besides the general gothic aesthetic, I honestly couldn't see any of the Tim Burton charm in the series. 10 years ago I would have lost my shit hearing Tim Burton was going to be involved with the Addams Family, but fast forward and I feel like the show would've been the same without him.
I've disengaged with Tim Burton after his comments on diveristy. As a black autistic goth Burton and his work really spoke to me. I had always felt weird and loved weird things that were not considered the social norm so his comments deeply hurt me. I still watch BeetleJuice and Edward Scissor Hands as those are the movies were I feel like I can still enjoy them and the diversity issue isn't nagging at me. That and there my special interest so it's been quit painful to not engage with them at all.... even though I do not believe in seperating the art from the artist. Tim Burton hasnt had that many personal projects looking back I dont know when or why but he's gone into making remakes of already exsisting projects that dont need to be told through his eyes. In my personal opionion Burton has good orginal ideas every once in awhile like FrankenWeenie or NBC (even though Henry Sellik wrote and directed that movie I'm talking more so the poem) and other times he relies on pre existing work to create with like Corpse Bride. Tim Burton has a unique aesthetic sure but his writing has always felt lackuster to me. When he's the sole writer everything doesnt all work for me. He's at his best when either someone takes his idea and writes a story like Sellick with NBC or when he has a co writer like on Edward Scissor Hands. All this to say I look at Tim Burton differenty after his comments on diversity sure he hasnt been flat out racist but the silence is speaking for itself inside and outside of his work/art.
Great video! I think my favorite Burton movie would probably be the original Batman. I think because he's operating in an existing world with it, he's a bit more limited in what he can do stylistically, but I think that also helped in him seeing where he should really push his aesthetic with it, creating a good balance where it feels like his style really amplifies the material, rather than feel like a crutch for it.

Batman 1989 is perfection for me as far as watching a Burton film.
Not necessarily being original to the character of Batman but just the atmosphere of Gotham City. The grit, the goth vibes, the fear, the trauma of being in that world. The costumes were glorious ofc.
It also had so much influence on Bruce Timm’s Batman The Animated Series.
y'know, my brother and my sister grew up with tim burton's films and they actually were genuinely excited about the alice movies because hey, tim is a weird guy and with a weird story he's definitely going to be great! but at one point, my sister just wanted to stop watching his films because she felt he was doing everything he didn't want to do or that he would criticize others doing and that, in a way, crossed him off as an artist for her. i think if he had followed his path instead of trying to be seen as a "general" kind of director that anyone would see / enjoy, he would've made some other great films.
edit: oh! btw, my fave tim burton film has to be beetlejuice (i'm a big winona and keaton fan lol).

Wednesday was okay as a show. The writing went downhill near the end but it was fine for the most part.
I think my favourite is either Beetlejuice or Big Fish. I also enjoy his Batman films.
Not looking forward to the Beetlejuice sequel as I do not really see a need for it. Especially after 35 plus years. I am also a little confused by the time of year being early September. Would seem dead on as a Halloween release.

Thev plan for the release in September is that if it's a hit, it will carry over to October. Plus, once September hits, people start thinking "Fall", "Autumn" and "Halloween". I do agree an October release would have been more ideal. The original was released on March 30th, 1988, right at the beginning of Spring.
Tim Burton to me is one of the great directors. The stuff of his I like I really like and the stuff I am more luke warm about I think overal is still really good (with the exception of Dumbo, though I blame Disney for that) I even rank his version of the chocolate factory above the first as its more accurate to the books and even if deep down I do prefer the first movie in many ways I respect being a bit more true to the source material.
In regards to him doing Bettle Juice 2, im not that surprised. What many of us forget is that artists dont have the luxery of only being creative when inspiration strikes them but having to still do artistic work at all times and that can be a drain on anyone no matter how creative you are. I mean just look at James Camron and Ridley Scott. Fantastic movies under there belt, but also dog shit.
I think it is inevitable for any creative person to fall back to their previous work as you cant just keep making banger after banger, eventually culture will change and youll find yourself out of it.
I do hope that BJ2 will be great but I am a bit more cautious on its quality, though I think at worst it will still be better then Dumbo.

In the original "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" Charlie didn't give back a drink he and his grandfather ingested; he gave back the Everlasting Gobstopper.
For "Dumbo", the drunk elephants might have been removed as a requirement by Disney.

Burton's Batman is like no other portrayal in any medium of pop culture, that being Comics, Film,Animation, Video Games.
And because of that, it is the worst incarnation of the character, don't get me wrong. I grew up with Batman (1989) & Batman Returns (1992) and still enjoy revisiting them, but Burton is someone that doesn't understand Batman, let alone likes him.

Burton has an extraordinary imagination. His movies have always been some of my favorites. He has some hits and misses with pre existing story that he adapts. But his biggest strength is when he writes original, personal stories. With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice coming out this September, I hope it lived up to the lore of the original story and Carrie’s some of that same nostalgic magic.

Just want to throw out a correction: I find it very odd to refer to his rendition of Charlie and the Chocolate factory as lacking respect for the source material. I find it especially funny considering the 70s movie was forbidden from using the charlie & the chocolate factory name because it was so far removed from the original that Roald Dahl didn't want them using his name. After his passing, during the production of Burton's film, Dahl's widow gave them permission to use the IPs name because it was so much closer to the source material.
Just find it a little ridiculous to classify the film as disrespectful to its source material, when of the the two notable adaptations, when it was the only one allowed to use the actual name of the property 🤷

Favorite Burton films are Beetlejuice, Batrman & Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands & Sleepy Hollow. I also love Mars Attacks and both his live action short and full length stop action animated versions of Frankeweenie. His whole catalog of films, I don't dislike any though.

I would probably say Batman and Beetlejuice. But people sem to forget Batman Returns, which I think an excellent film as well, in some ways more Burton-esque than the first one, especially because he had more creative control. If things hadnt soured between him and Warner Brothers because it didnt make as much money (even though it still did well), he had some interesting plans for the third film. Another honorable mention for me is Sweeney Todd. Its definitely an odd one, but I think only Burton could have pulled it off.
I always forget also that he and his muse Helena Bonham-Carter were together for close to 15 years and had two kids together. Their split in 2014 was apparently pretty rough and I think that really affected him for a time.
Maybe Wednesday was what he needed to get his juices flowing again. Perhaps doing something different (TV) gave him perspective and confidence to be good with doing the sequel for Beetlejuice.

I think beetlejuice 2 will be as good as the original. It will be as good as Batman and Batman returns. Michael Keaton is back as beetlejuice, Winona Ryder is back as Lydia deetz, Catherine O’Hara is back as Delia deetz, Willem Dafoe is in it, Danny Devito, Jenna Ortega, etc. Plus Tim Burton is back and there is no cgi. Hopefully it will be a lot better than the flash even though Michael Keaton returning as Batman was the best part of the film even though it went downhill from there after his Batman dies.

ive touched on this in my own video essays, and maybe i have a specific interest in scriptwriters, but i think the basic crux of the issue is that, as burton himself has said, he doesnt know a good screenplay from a bad one. the best movies of his are the ones where he works with writers who can expand on burtons own scattered ideas and self-interest and work them into a satisfying cohesive whole. the fact that he worked with writers like john august and daniel waters and caroline thompson and scott alexander and larry karaszewski more than once shows that these were the writers he felt confident in to tell his own stories, and probably with whom he gelled the best. writers like jane goldman and ehren kruger and linda woolverton, probably were studio mandated writers and "supposed to help communicate burtons style to a wider audience", and told what they wanted from disney and the other studios (probably more child friendly stuff, more female empowerment, funnier scenes, action scenes, etc).
i find it funny you mentioned a series of unfortunate events and addams family though, as both movies were meant to have him directing but ultimately were given to another director/producer, barry sonnenfeld, who i think understands burtons appeal but adding his own spin to it. and also, a lot of burton's appeal comes from his work not with his recurring actors but with his recurring art team. rick heinrichs, colleen atwood, anton furst, they all worked to translate his style on screen, and thats part of what made his films so beautiful when i was young. a lot of that beauty has faded with the years, and even the movies that feature it (like dumbo) have lost much of its texture and independence from big studios.
i actually really enjoy how he inserts himself in his own movies, even the ones he doesnt seem to like so much. his featuring of outcast characters, or just simply people who are borderline marginalized and considered "weird" or "unsettling" really tends to appeals to teenagers, at least during his more successful years. i think the autobiographical aspects he adds to his own movies comes from a place of wanting to connect with the characters someone else is writing about, and that connection is what makes a movie recognizably his.
i dont think beetlejuice two will be good unless the writers and script are any good. and i havent seen the trailer, but what snippets are shown here, it just looks like it wants to repeat what the first one did. the generational thing looks interesting, but that was it. the beetlejuice character himself does not really work nowadays, i think. jenna ortega will be very good in it, though, as she often is.
sorry for the long comment, but im really fascinated with analysis of burton's work (obviously), as i feel theres so much about him that can be elaborated as a modern sort of "vulgar auteur".
also, my favorite movie of his is corpse bride. not his best one by a long shot, and is clearly inferior to nightmare before christmas, but it really gets to me, yknow.

I think the real downfall of Tim Burton is in the clip talking about imitators. Unlike Wes Anderson or David Fincher, he didn't just steer hard into his own style of film. He got hung up on people trying to be him. It's less that people got better as much as he lost his confidence. He also is very dependent on his collaborations. Jenna Ortega maybe is the spark he needs. I do think Wednesday worked best because it was basically a 2 hander between Ortega and the gal who played Enid. It seems a mistake not to be using them both.

Even though Tim Burton isn't a director I really care for, I think his style makes him a really great director because, when you watch his earlier films, you can always tell it's a Tim Burton film, and I feel other directors don't have that. This is something straight out of my nightmares 😭
When I was a child, I would have these dreams in which monsters that looked like dwarves or demon jokers would appear out of closets or hatches or small doors and they would start dancing or laughing and contorting in my home and I was so creeped out 💀
The scariness came from the nonsense of it all, the chaos. They didn't necessarily do anything violent, but just them being there, mocking and gleefully doing subversive stuff creeped me out and shook me to my bones with cringe and fear.

Running your audio through a High-Pass filter (using an EQ to remove low frequencies below around 90Hz) will really help smooth out / remove plosives ('P' and 'B' sounds that create loud pops against the diaphragm of the microphone). No doubt watching back on a phone or laptop these plosives are not noticeable, but if watching with good speakers or headphones these low frequency pops are quite distracting.
In my eyes he's been falling for quite some time now, and that happened right after Ed Wood (1994). His best movie in my opinion.

I thought Wednesday contradicted what the Addams Family is about. The joke of the Addams family is they are the weird family in a neighborhood of normies. But now there is a whole school of weirdos. It's like they're trying to make Harry Potter, not the Addams Family.

Tim Burton is honestly more “the name” than anything else. He didn’t even actually direct “Nightmare before…” also, as a diehard lifelong Addams family fan - Wednesday is gen z pandering garbage that has nothing to do with the Addams family. They’re creepy but non of them have superpowers. Garbage garbage garbage. He fell out with me years ago.
I think he probably started to change after the failures of Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, and Planet of the Apes. I know he really wanted to tell the story of Ed Wood and that the cards that Mars Attacks were based off of were things that mattered to him in his childhood/personal taste. He also was a big fan of the original POTA movies. But instead of being accepted for being different, those movies weren’t really successful so maybe that’s why he started to cater to the audiences and big studios more to get back into their good graces, but that also meant he started churning out less inspired and more artificial films with a few genuinely good gems sprinkled in (Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Big Eyes). And although many of them did normally make money, lately he’s started to flop more than he did in the early to mid 2000s. Like his 2010s run withe the exception of Alice in Wonderland were mostly flops. With Wednesday, he finally seems to be making studios, audiences, and critics mostly happy again, so I hope this lasts but I’m really worried about Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. That concept was in production hell for a very long time, and it can fall into a trap of being mid that a lot of legacy sequels fall into. The last time a Michael Keaton Burton character was resuscitated was for the Flash, which was not only not good but also a huge financial disappointment.

Burton lost his edge because he’s not taking risks or embracing HORROR.
His relationship with Disney made him more IP-orientated, which ignores “the outsider” or “misfit” facets of his style that made us love him in the first place. Wish he would team up with Ardman Animation and do another old school feature about MONSTERS again.🎃

No way Bettlejuice 2 will be mostly practical- that's a marketing ploy. Producers really, really reeeaaallly don't like practical FX because there's an element of unpredictability in its execution; they adore CGI because it's closer to ordering a pizza. They'll be touches of practical in the movie but I promise you it'll be mostly CGI at the end of the day, including, I bet, some CGI that loosely emulates claymation in order to trick people into thinking they saw more practical FX than they did. Big Hollywood Director Since Batman is not gonna literally get his hands dirty with clay right now- who are we kidding.
i think 2016 was the absolute trough of his work, with the miss peregrines home for peculiar children movie- i'm defo biased but the way the film is SO focused on cool visuals it sacrifices multiple really strong characters from the books. Like emma, the main love interest. in the books she's literally very fiery, with fire powers and a bold, independent personality but in the film her peculiarity is swapped with a younger character, olive, and she becomes a pretty girl with floaty powers and cool lead boots and barely any personality beside love interest that follows main character around. hell, even olive, the girl who now had fire powers, barely had a personality herself apart from being shipped with the edgy teen who has an obssession with dead things (enoch) which is just odd. (ive also got a personal gripe with the way horace, a fashion centred guy who hates anything modern told jacob he had a nice shirt he would say the opposite in the books. come on.)
its a real shame, because that series WOULD have definitely fit in with his aesthetic and it would've been really good if not for the laziness with which it was carried out and the plot and lore squashing, like the villains of the whole story were a huge army in the books but in the movie it was like 10 people in blackpool tower with not much of a motive.
so thats why i think its like the prime example of his downfall in one movie, not to mention EVERYTHING being done with CGI like the cool monsters on stilts that couldve been really awesome if done practically. i'd love to see someone make a video on this bc if they dont I KNOW I WILL

It surprises me how much actors and directors are obligated by contract to say "we aren't using ANY CGI this time, all practical" in every press tour they do (not only with Beetlejuice 2, but Alien Romulous, etc. so more people are hyped about the movie they are selling when it's obvious 60% of the film IS gonna be CGI, which isn't a bad thing at all, we are use to the idea of "CGI=bad" because of the past ten years of action and superheroe movies but when done right is spectacular and not noticeable at all, like in Dune for example, those to movies use A LOT, like, TONS of CGI, but it's sooo good it's not really important for the viewer; in other movies like the horrible Alice in Wonderland that Burton directed, the CGI is horrendous and so noticeable you just want it to go away.
Big Fish is Burton's magnum opus. Whimsy and magic being interjected into mundane "suburban" stories is exactly where he works best. If he had continued applying that perspective to more mature stories, he would be one of the most highly respected directors of all time. But instead he keeps going back to stuff he liked as a kid, hiring the people he works well with. Stuck.
