OCD brackets-nuts-bolts cleaner/refurbisher here too. Yes, the more you look into things, the more there is to repair or pay attention to. I believe the technical term for this is called "Scope Creep". It's when a job or a project creeps well beyond its initial scope of time, effort and complexity.
I too must clean, sand and paint every area I work on. What that does is it make all my projects take 3 times longer than they would normally take. In the end I'm happier because the entire job is much more complete. Of course you can't restore every area to concourse quality but good is good enough in many cases.
I understand what you are saying, looks to like you have done a good job on stopping the rust from getting worse and probably wont be driving daily where it will get rained on all the time. That whole assembly is about $500.00 plus getting it installed. I believe you will be just fine.

Thanks Navy for this post. I am in exactly the same boat as you on my 1965 coupe. Right now have a plastic cover panel over my vent holes on my top cowl outside but will, after I get moved to my new house, do this same repair. I WILL NOT pay a body shop hundreds of dollars or more to take the the entire front end of that old car apart to put a new cowl panel in. My old mustang is in fair shape but not good enough shape to put that much money into it. Mine does not even have a 289 engine - just the six-cylinder.
You are welcome. So far so good with this repair. No more leaks even when I shot water directly into the cowl with the hose. I am very happy with it so far.
I am on my 2nd wire wheel on my bench grinder. Several wire brushes and scotchbrite pads. Tidying up my inheritance. My fathers 1968 Mustang GT 390 4-speed. 52,460 miles. Been in storage since 1974
You are correct certainly. But as I think I said, I wanted to see how these inserts worked given my only rust appeared to be around the vent rings. I am happy to report that so far these inserts are working well.
ya,... if you care about doing the restore... then do it to the best of your ability.... it's not about writing a check for some else to do the work.... with a can of tremclad ,... I can make almost any car part look new again.

I deal with scope creep at work all the time. Just never thought of it with the Mustang. But you are right sir.

So glad I am not the only one. I agree it takes longer but the result is much more satisfing.
I clean the parts I take off and will sometimes paint.. and yes I think I'm OCD about stuff like that

Also, when you have the seats out fixing the heater core is a lot easier.
That is so true. Especially with the original seats that do not lay back any.
