Rear Springs Upgrade 2003 L400 Mitsubishi Delica

- I thought I would video the main parts of a recent rear spring upgrade in my 2003 L400 Delica. I noticed there wasn’t much on You Tube relating to it in previous months. There is some double up in comments as it took place over a week as we were in the middle of a storm at the time.
While many who do this job regularly will use less equipment, perhaps differently, this seemed like a sensible option from the advice I got. The main change if I did it again would be to use another trolley jack under the body rather than the high lift and use HD compressor springs rather than the car ones I was given as they almost ran out of travel.
Even after the springs have settled in I have about 60mm of extra clearance with the use of 40mm Dobinsons HD springs.
Great videos Steve.
I have the same van, Great to see the potential with help & tips from other people🍻
Ok I’m going to be a bit critical here but please don’t take it badly: I have zero idea how to do this job as your video is mainly you talking and virtually no actual doing. One minute the springs are on the floor and the next they’re in the van - I have zero idea how they got there. I really appreciate all advice and tutorials mate I really do so I did get something from this vid but had to go watch others for the actual process.
Steve thanks for making this video! I'm looking at doing this too soon. Any more videos / further explanations on this job would be gratefully welcomed. Cheers mate!
Hi, the actual job done this way is quite straightforward. It's the little things in car jobs like this that can cause multi hour problems. Make sure you have several of the common sockets/spanners, strong arm bar, enough jacks and stands. I used a car spring compressor but nearly ran out of travel. Another issue can be the location of compressor on springs. Everything can go together then you might find you can't get to the bolts to get it off etc.
Steve Devine good advice thanks! And did you install drop link spacers? I was just reading about these, ball joint spacers in the front and break line spacers too...Did you have these put in?
I put the rear sway bar back in as they wanted it back for a warrant, so I'm not too concerned about the brake lines. I need to find some ball joint spacers as that is a better option than the full torsion bar lift I have done
What size are your tires, and do you have a lift or is it on stock height? thanks Steve.
Hi steve thanks for the video, did those springs lift your delica much? im looking at upgrading mine but unsure what to go for? cheers mate
Hi, sorry for the delay. They lifted them about 60 - 75mm unloaded, and have worked very well for years, happily keeping up with normal traffic through a local mountain pass. However, several years on I am now hauling a dirt bike on a carrier. Even though the carrier and bike are only about 130kg, there is a bit of sag. So the springs have worked very well for 4wd lift and handling, but might not be the best for serious weight carrying
Buen vídeo amigo 👏
Hey mate, sweet as van. Do you have an issues opening your sliding door and wheel rub?
Hi Rowan, yes I do, however with the rims being 7" it's not too bad, as long as the van isn't parked on an angle facing the door. Eventually I will get an extension , or make one. I also took off the inner panel to save it
what the name of the new pistols? where to buy from online?
Hey mate, i noticed you hadn’t changed the shock absorbers when you installed bigger springs, did you leave the stock shocks in? If so did you have any problems with them?
Hi Damon, no problems with the stock shocks even though this was several years ago now. Still handles well
How long does the whole process take to fit everything?
G’day mate, hope this mail finds you well. Please be so kind and give me the offset on those 8X15 rims. I suppose you are running 32 /11.5R15?? Cheers mate.
Hi Mickey. Yes, 32". They are actually 7" I have found out. The offset number are difficult to work out. Something like 8 (gap) 324 which doesn't make sense! I am looking at going to a shallower, more positive offset to stop rubbing - basically more inset
Good to hear from you! Kind of thought you might have a clearance issue with such offset. Just watch out you don’t go to far in otherwise you might get a problem up front on full lock steering. Anyway mate, I can’t make up my mind on what size rim/tire combo. I have the same truck as you, SWB V6 with a 3.9 conversion. Now its time for a bit more space under the rear dif. otherwise I wouldn’t be bothered. How does your monster cope with that tire combo?
How can get lift up spring & how much
They are fairly common part with the large suspension suppliers worldwide (except in the US). These are dobinson c109 from memory. About $300 to buy
Landover spring are also a common replacement
