Fact: Forest Whitaker is actually a practitioner of the Filipino martial art called Arnis also called Kali or Eskrima/Escrima for which he still practices up to this day.
What is really beautiful about the sword scene, is that Jarmusch could have easily make it last a lot longer, almost like a video clip. The moves, the music, the city. Everything fits right in. But instead, he keeps it short and sharp like a blade. Nothing to add, nothing to remove. Just a gem inside this gem of a movie.
I can understand why some people don;t like this movie, but for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, there is a message in Ghost Dog. But, if you don't know, you wont know and thats ok.
for a bigger man, it's remarkable how fluid and graceful Forrest Whitaker is. for those of you who may not have seen it , make sure you see the Last King of Scotland.
Let's not forget that the man is also a an actual martial artist irl, focusing in Filipino martial arts (kali/escrima) which gives him the blade and hand skills you see here.
It’s actually offensive when people say shit like that. What makes you think because someone is big they can’t be fluid , agile , quick ? What your saying is not a compliment & sounds ignorant af .
This is a great movie, in fact one of the best movies I've ever seen. Only one thing makes me sad here, and its because I can't explain with beauty words why it's great, I can feel it when I see the movie. The way of life he choose, the samurai way , but in modern times, like to live in a fantasy in real life but feel good with yourself because, in the end, life is like a dream. The way of no fear death but also no fear life, the honor and respect, all that in contrast to the modern times where people sometimes are like a rats; trying to find every path to being safe and alive when problems happen or their lifes are in risk. Appreciate is great, but appreciate life means life with honor like a real man and death with honor if possible, what is hard in this modern days, because being like a scared rat means you're dead before the physical death. This movie, like Le samuraï, shows us how a loner who found a way of life to be in peace and fill, partially, that emptiness that everyone of us sometimes feels, helping us to not get crazy. This is not enough, but is I can do.
+Стрэлок Виамонтэ Yes, but also Samurai code of ethics works even in modern times. Ghost Dog's fate followed his ethics. His life had a meaning. That's more than modern man has going for him.
I feel you. Some movies are simply about catching a feeling. they don't need hardcore action 24/7 or an evil masterplan. Those movies can have nobody talking for minutes and you still aren't bored because you can let your thoughts strife and explore the captured mindset on screen. Not many movie makers can pull that off
I think that Ghost Dog and the dog in this scene are one spirit. They are interconnected. When they look at eachother there is a sense of equallity. One living creature to another. Power, equallity, ghost dog.
I remember seeing "Ghost Dog" in the theater, I think solo, in my early 20s. I love Jim Jarmusch---this modern day lone samurai story may be my favorite of all his works. And there are some hard contenders---for me," Dead Man" and "Down By Law" are both all-time favorites. But "Ghost Dog" will always stand out for me; I love a ronin.
One of my favorite film's That I grewed up watching next to Other film's that I love watching too, Like A Bronx Tales, Wes Craven The People Under The Stairs, Con Air, John Carpenter Christine, Python (2000), Only The Strong, & Cooley High. Ghost Dog: The Way of The Samurai is Criminally Underrated film love the Story, funny humor, Kickass Soundtrack, and Cool Scenes with Forrest Whitaker.
it is not a mainstream movie, it has exceptional music, memorable memes, a tragic underground protagonist, a rather small but dedicated fan base... and the list goes on. A cult classic.
This is a fucking masterpiece I grew up with. I feel privileged that this was made in my lifetime. They recently about a year or so ago showed this at my local Blast Furnace as a special drive-in movie and it was even more epic there
when this flick was on DirectTV channel 100s back in 2000 I used to watch it every single day....LITERALLY. until it went off the air. One of my favorite films ever
best guess for the name of this instrumental is "fast sword - RZA" according to the credits. it isn't on the soundtrack, BUT the DVD has a music only audio option where all dialogue and sound effects are silent.
I am the only one that watchs these kind of videos like years and years later and also my brother was born in 2012 so 2 years from 2010 thats kind of cool to me
Fun fact: IM 43 A DIE HARD WU HEAD..AND KOOL G RAP IS TOP 5...THE SONG OFF THIS SOUND TRACK "CAKES" BROUGHT ME HERE...I WILL FIND OT STREAMING SOME WHERE TODAY SEPT 23, 2023....LONG LIVE HIP HOP!!!!! PEACE
He is literally a Samurai. In mind, spirit and body.
What a ungiustified underrated movie. Forest Whitaker performance is outstanting.
I really like it too. I've heard critique he was a little chubby for the role... That's BS, he represents soul.
Its not underrated
Fact: Forest Whitaker is actually a practitioner of the Filipino martial art called Arnis also called Kali or Eskrima/Escrima for which he still practices up to this day.
Discipline of Dan Inonsanto (a Friend of Bruce Lee)
Thank you for this. I never knew, but he’s fluid.
Assassin. Facts.......I also....The underworld is not without refinements.......we do what we do. No cap....understand. Stay out of the dark.
This is why he is more fluid why the knife.
Isn’t he also a black belt in Kenpo?
This movie is definitely an hidden gem and very underrated.
Such a underrated movie. Love it.

rza makes the sickest beats ever...dope
That dog, with the intensity of his stare and stillness of his gaze, seemed to me a kindred spirit peering into Ghost's soul.
I can understand why some people don;t like this movie, but for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, there is a message in Ghost Dog. But, if you don't know, you wont know and thats ok.
that's the truth
***** I can't see why people don't like it. this is epic
TimelineProvision TP People wanna see explosions and special effects. Movies with strong scenes and good dialogue and plot are few these days.
***** lol true
+Tony D, there are people and there are amphibians.
connection with that dog...no doubt...
what do you mean connection?
for a bigger man, it's remarkable how fluid and graceful Forrest Whitaker is. for those of you who may not have seen it , make sure you see the Last King of Scotland.
SUPER REPUBLICAN Well he was a football player prior to acting.

The way of the Samurai
@Stargazing_Axolotl I would also include his performance as Lieutenant Jon Kavanaugh in The Shield.
That kata sequence and the music always gives me the chills. Love this movie.
This movie captures some of the personal moments one feels or experiences when no one is around making it personal
Empty hand: jeet kune do
Sword: kenjutsu
Knife : kali
Correction: Jeet Kune Do means "way of the intercepting fist". Karate Do means "way of the empty hand".
the freestyle is sick wu tang forever
Ice Cream Man is Coming!!!!!
The roof-top scene is so epic!!
This technique isn't just fancy choreography this is some legit dig deep training.
"In my hood I'm a hero"
Word.
Yep
I came here after learning Kendrick's N95 visuals referenced this movie
He mastered ultra instinct
Ghost Dog: proof that you don't have to wear Savile Row-tailored suits to be a gentleman assassin.

It's not about the clothing, it's how you carry oneself.....
it IS about the clothing AND how you carry yo'self ......
BOTH are absolutely necessary .............
A cult classic.
One of my favorites
Still jamming this in 2023

For some reason, some of the best cinema I've seen in a looong time. The music, the cold stare, everything's perfectly blended.
Absolutely....the film is just full of these little golden cinematic nuggets it's WILD
This and "power and equality" with the RZA.....my two favorite scenes from Ghost Dog! I loooovvvve that movie!
This is a great movie, in fact one of the best movies I've ever seen.
Only one thing makes me sad here, and its because I can't explain with beauty words why it's great, I can feel it when I see the movie.

I can't get tired of this scene ..
How can you not love anything with Forrest Whitaker playing in it?
Hoo-ah! :)
I remember seeing "Ghost Dog" in the theater, I think solo, in my early 20s. I love Jim Jarmusch---this modern day lone samurai story may be my favorite of all his works. This is a Independent Cinema !.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRT CINEMA ..........lol
This movie has some of the best one liners. I love it!
the way of the Samurai......
they say the little girl at the end grew up to be Michonne from walking dead.
You may also remember her from the Bernie Mac Show.
Kamaljit Dhaliwal serious? is that her?
"Michonne" = Danai Gurira. "Pearline" (the character in Ghost Dog) = Camille Winbush. Close, but no cigar.
@@yoyoholck Lol no, Danai Gurira would be 20 years old when this came out
Maybe best theory so far...
beautiful score for this scene! So majestic
adamtherock2008 it's like the movie's built _around it_, love it.
great film...very underrated...Same with Jarmusch, really
One of my favorite film's That I grewed up watching next to Other film's that I love watching too, Like A Bronx Tales, Wes Craven The People Under The Stairs, Con Air, John Carpenter Christine, Python (2000), Only The Strong, & Cooley High. Now that's a cult movie.
why? and be careful of what you say, I don't want to start an arguement.
it is not a mainstream movie, it has exceptional music, memorable memes, a tragic underground protagonist, a rather small but dedicated fan base... and the list goes on. A cult classic.
I thought its because the ice cream truck.
