(So was UA-cam, but thats a different point) You'll probably be telling your kids and grandkids about how you played with toy ships on a computer - back when they hadn't even invented holograms yet - and how an older guy with a funny laugh had fun talking in the background with a match playing in the background. The Mighty Jingles is leaving a rich legacy for others to follow one day - one where mistakes and repetitions aren't something to scoff at, but to have a laugh over. I think thats worth something. :)

I think your title says it all. It's not controversial; it's unconventional. Also, I think a person's play style should be considered when choosing add-ons and skills. If you sit back and fire long range like Spinnaker did, he made the right choice. If you actively go DD hunting in the thick of things, having the other setup makes more sense.

He got a bit lucky with that Shima at the end. If he had had radar the Shima wouldn't have been around for him to need to get lucky. I don't think you can make the case that it's the best loadout, it may be situationally good, but not nearly as consistent. GG in any case.
Yep, hydro and radar always on Des Moines. Cruisers keep away from Des Moines all game long and only come after you during the end game if they have full squadrons and you are low healts, so defensive fire is useless as you already have all the AA distroyed and they will get you.
Unconventional for sure. I do believe he made it harder with spotter plane. As you said both DDs would have been dead early in C zone capping. But also both the Zao and Moskavas made critical mistakes. Especially the Moskva...he should have known the DM was close by...also panic mode by the Zao made it easy. Hats off to Spinnaker he did what he had to do...except the mistake of switching to AP after the Zao put out the fire he was faultless.

Let's not forget that the longer range a cruiser can shoot a battleship, the less likely it is to get deleted. And as all the enemy DDs are going to assume you've got radar and avoid you, then battleships are the biggest threat to you. Might not be optimal, but I wouldn't say it's a BAD choice.

Mov Actually, the full Yuro build would have replaced the RoF upgrade with the gun range enhancing upgrade in slot 6. In fact, spinnaker's build seems rather odd without the gun range enhancing upgrade.
Spotter plane flies further from the ship and slower than the fighter, increasing time over the ocean to spot torpedoes. Spotters are like a 13km radar for ships behind islands or behind smokes. Its purely a meme build, but it can work.
He's using spotter because he's using reload mod over a range mod, so he needs the range from the spotter. Radar would've done better for him this game though. It would've spotted everything he spotted with the plane + all the dds at A.
The two enemy DDs left at the end killed half of his team. And they were exactly the two he could have radared at the start of the game and most likely taken out. Winning this game happened because the rest of the enemy was just crap.
As someone who's only ever played WOT from Wargaming, seeing more of these Warships replays lately and also hearing my friend talk about the game is tempting me into giving it a go. Excellent video as always, Jingles :D
Spotter plane is the selfish choice that increases your damage and XP while hurting your team's chances to win. If you are a radar cruiser, the enemy DDs are constantly crying for focus fire on you, compromising your ability to survive and deal damage. The friendly Z52 was the hero at the end, carrying the spotting load. If the MO kills the friendly Z52, then Spinnaker doesn't get the last 3 kills and it is a loss. If i want to max my damage, spotter plane is good. If i want to max my chances of winning, radar is better.
Maxim No. 43. If it's stupid and it works, it's still stupid and you're lucky. That said, I don't think using this method well is because of luck. You need skill to make this work, I couldn't do it. But Yuro has shown that a skilled player can dominate with this method... Of course, a Skilled player can dominate using whatever. And if you're that good, then sure, use whatever, DM is more than just a one-trick pony anyway.

Avalon, it's actually 2 steps shy of Yuro's build, because spinnaker wasn't using the range enhancing upgrade in slot 6. He was using the increased RoF upgrade. You could tell from the base max range that was showing when he didn't have a spotter up.
The 8"/55 of Baltimore (and consequently Des Moines) has a super heavy AP shell. The Mark 21 AP shell was issued to Des Moines-class, Baltimore-class, and Oregon City-class cruisers
Des Moines alongside the Tier IX Baltimore and Tier VIII New Orleans (New Orleans to a lesser extent from my experience) are capable of brawling against ships with guns that are firing up to 15" AP shells. The bow is so ridiculously sharply angled you could slice tomatoes with that thing, but because it's a heavy cruiser it carries enough weight behind it to not be overmatched by cruiser or battlecruiser guns. My favorite thing to do in a Baltimore is to slow down to 1/4 speed and go bow on towards Bismarcks and Tirpitzes, because most of them figure that firing AP at the bow should work, but it doesn't with the high tier American cruisers because their guns are only 15" (380mm).
You can't do that with a New Orleans. It's coated in 25mm armor, which is overmstched by anything larger than 14inch guns - 358mm and up overmatch. Which is one of the reasons why the NO is so squishy - all battleships T8 and up (plus a lot of T7 and even some T6) will overmatch them. The Tirpitz & Bismarck included.
You can add all french bbs as well (except Republiqe/France). Yes, even an Alsace uses 380mm. Just sit at around 9km, just outside of his secondary range but just withing the range he has no plunging fire. Watch and drink their tears.
But you do not have trop which means that you cannot finish them fast. The most ship mounted with 15 inch gun is Alsace,Bismarck and Tirpitzes which all have too much secondary to be brawl with. They can kill you with secondary only in less than 2 mins.
Thats why you sit just outside their secondary range. Yes, they can rush you, but if you dont have any teammate to punish them for it, then you are way out of position.
Personally everyone that thinks they should comment on what he's loaded with should take a moment and remember it's not their game he is playing. He can take whatever load out he wishes and enjoy his game as he feels comfortable. For my load out I normally take DAA and Radar in random matches and swap in Hydro and Radar in clan battles but that's my choice. It does amaze me how many people on UA-cam just like in the game feel their way of playing is the only way to play. Much like the dead in game suddenly learning how to win the match even though they died in the first minute. Yeah, it's a thing. Good on him and a great match!
Eurobeat/Yuro made a video months ago about taking the spotter plane instead of radar (and taking the survivability expert skill), which was weird when I first saw it. But it kinda makes sense, considering spotter plane enables a player to spot farther (since it travels farther from your ship), hence lighting up more ships for your teammates to (hopefully) shoot at. Yuro explains it in detail on the comments section of that video, but basically it all boils down to giving yourself an advantage while still make a contribution to your team.
I remembered when jingles said that WoWs does not have a lot of players on NA server so I was quite amazed (even that I live in EU) to see a game that I enjoy watching and suck at playing it to have good players on less populated servers. (20:27 bottom right corner). Anyway, enjoyed your video sir, and I would actually love to see a series of tips and tricks to be at least a decent player of WoWs!

And I love to hear Jingles explaining too, lots to learn 👌 For modules, I would take radar first as well... but the point of having spotting aircrafts doubled with this kind of 203mm balistic stay sensed if u like to hide or strike enemy ships hiding behind islands... with these specificities, 6spotters still interesting ofc. Anyway, such many other things to take in count. Best could be to take 2 similar kind of skilled players with both a DesMoines, and compare just difference between both modules on some hundreds battles, etc. I suppose 2/3 of players choose radar, but it’s not such obvious, spotters still have assets in this case. Two issues with your commentary on the DM setup. First, you failed to mention the very long reload on the spotter aircraft consumable. So even though he had 6 charges he could only launch 3 times. Secondly, USN cruisers do get the hydro consumable or defensive fire, and given the rate at which CVs are encountered, hydro is my choice. Personally if you are going to use a catapult plane, equip the fighter. It lasts like 4x longer and a 50% shorter cool down. The trade off is the fighter flies 1km closer to your plane and it doesn’t increase hooting range but the duration and cool down make up for this. That said, radar is the clear choice.
I’ve used spotter on the Des Moines. It sacrifices your anti-did for the ability to attack BBS far more effectively. The high arcs, and the plane lets you hit ships over Tall islands

Apart from the Moskva kill, I didn't really seen any real benefit to be had taking the spotter plane. Battleships lose value as time goes on, due to their reliance on spotters, slow rate of fire, and crap stealth, while Destroyers gain value for all the opposite reasons (since late in the match, people have likely burned their radar consumables). Simply being able to spot and attack from stealth late game makes DDs invaluable for clinching wins, even when at critical HP. So all that early damage on the Montana? Flashy, and stat-padding, but strategically inferior compared to killing at least TWO enemy DDs; both of whom were relevant in that match all the way until the bitter end I'll add. That Zao for example, wouldn't have had nearly an easy time as he did vs Spinnaker, if not for the DD keeping him spotted. And even then, the Zao only died because he got greedy. On the teamplay defensive side, the spotter plane did detect Torps, but yet, the torps the spotter aircraft detected were already obvious to anticipate, and would have been just as obvious with a radar consumable, simply by virtue of "Hey, there's two destroyers over there in that smoke screen".
Also forget that Spotter plane will give you 20% extra range on main guns. This is all good. Also doing that ammount of HP dmg to enemy montana is worth as it renders her dmg repair consumable being used up earlly in batlle. Also both those DDs got quite low on HP and had to use 2 or all 3 consumables to escape. This all ads up. We all think that kills are all but I think this is support cruiser same as Worchester and Minotaur.. For base normal games it is ok choice. I am not arguing it is better then radar but for normal game it is not teriblly bad. Also spooting torps with plane Allerts your idiot BBs that there is a wall of skill going down near them so they should pay attention. But yea radar is a better choice. I also use spoter on my Roon for that 22 km range. This alows you to be effective cruiser from far away. I also speced him in main gun range for that purpose and it is quite good. Obviouslly for randoms its good but for coimetitive fighter plane and aa deff would be better in my opinion then range. But its just my thoughts. I also think there are better cruisers for cometitive then HIndenburg.
Alexander Kidd sure. But come on, its just a game. I sometimes run a secondary build on my Montana with a range upto 9.1km on my secondaries. Not much, but any DD near me dies really quickly. Plus lots of fires on enemy Kurfursts - much to their shame, haha! Who cares? Its just a game.

Alexander Kidd of course he would have. But it gets boring after a while. Radar is easy mode when you learn to properly use it. Double spotter is interesting and fun.
US cruisers can equip Hydro, just at the cost of DFAA - I like when people try "different" things, like radar Minotaur, Reload Kagero, F3 Shima, Fire prevention GK, etc. Brings spice to the game, and keeps people guessing what loadout you are running.
Jingles, the Des Moines can indeed mount Hydroacoustic Search. It fits in the same slot as Defensive Fire/AA; more and more people on the NA server are choosing it over DFAA due to the statistical lack of CV drivers, plus it's the obvious choice for clan battles.
Seeing what everyone else is doing and doing another thing gives you a metagame advantage. If an enemy ship abandons a smokescreen because it sees a Des Moine and assumes RADAR that's good news for you as well as being able to surprise opponents with your spotter planes.
Des Moines a gun cruiser built during the paradigm shift to carriers. Not meant to stand in a battle line, but to provide a heavy artillery platform for beach landings and antiaircraft fire....
ACTUALLY JINGLES (is that how it feels? Wew, it's inhebriathing) the last conventional gun cruisers ever commissioned were the Soviet Sverdlov class, the Murmansk entered service in 1955 and stayed there until 1989.
I'll say one thing, they're a damn good shot with those slow shells. Certainly the safer choice is the radar as one can easily argue the great strength of the DM is denying caps to enemy DDs and often killing them in the process. Given DDs are clearly the most significant ships in most battles, that's a lot to give up. Be interested to see if using spotter planes is his usual method, and how his stats stack up (win rate, damage, exp) vs server-wide stats.
I did a range build on my Des Moines and run this setup as well. I'm able to hit ships 20-21km away with the spotter up, and 18.1km away normally. I do better running this then with a radar setup. Everyone's different in how they play so what works for some doesn't work for others. Oh and jingles please finish Ghost recon Wild Lands before you start Loan Echo again, and check out CROSSOUT.
The thing is it does not matter what we say if he is right or ronge in what he takes for consuables it is up to the player and if he likes to take spotter air craft then let him it is up to you take what you like and what you think will do you the most good
well no its no the same Do to that being a different is a tad large because well not tier 3 but 2 tiers below is ok this wows not wot were you got the same guns so you can do ok even when lower tier but that is not what I ment I mean for choosing consumables and upgrades to do the most good for his team and the case you used was in the extreams I mean saying that would be like saying that all AA skills and upgrades are bad do to there being less cv players
Marvin, you're wrong. It is ENTIRELY a player's choice how to set up his ship. And you have no say in the matter. Worry about setting up your own damned ships and leave the setting up of other peoples' ships to them.
I feel like that victory doesn't make a strong argument for spotter aircraft. The victory was a due to a combination of Spinakker's skill, his team's skill, and mistakes made by the opposing team; The spotters didn't make much of a difference. IMO the problem with the catapault aircraft has always been the long cooldown timers (4 minutes!). If the direction center decreased the cooldown, it'd be more worthwhile.

There’s actually another advantage to using the spotter plane. It gives you a nice overhead view which you can use to more accurately land shots and shoot people who are firing in a smoke screen.

I so rarely play conventional. Surprise by being different can make for more success. That showed up in Spinnaker's game today. Being different is being wrong. Some think it stupid, but you be amazed how often playing unconventionally works. I recent went into a Clan Wars battle with my JPN Tier X Shimakaze with the Type F3 (8km/76 knots) Torpedoes loaded. Most would us 12 or 20 km. Of course I ran into 3 enemy DD and with my faster reload and quick Torpedoes. I sank 2 of 3, and damaged the 3rd before they got me. We won!!
Well the spotter plane build does appear to work but I admit I will stick with the radar on my Des, but honestly I was more surprised he didn't shoot at the enemy teams destroyers more rather than the Frederick when he had the chance as they were an obvious threat to the team and seeing how they did it might have helped the team more,
Nice amount of damage and good positioning to keep the guns singing. Enemy team did kind of let him do it though. You give a Des Moines free reign like that and it's never going to end well. I do think it would have been good to point out that in the time he spent pounding the BB that he never killed at the start he could have racked up substantial damage on 2 DD's...then moved onto pounding the Battleship(Which had been spotted by another friendly, not the cat planes). XP from damage is calculated by percentage of target ships HP, not on the big number in the top right corner there. A Des Moines can consistently take 25% of a Shima's HP in one salvo. How many salvos did it need to do 25% damage to the battleship? But please, all Des Moines run this build. I've come accross 2 so far...in 1 game and they were divisioned. Earned me a nice little double strike in my Gearing parked 7km off their Port bow. Any idea that a DD will be scared enough of just the name Des Moines is gone the moment we see planes lift off the deck or circle over head. Very quickly switches from "Oh shit, get it off me!" to "Oh yes...nom nom nom"
To briefly correct a slight error made in this video. The Des Moines has 27mm of bow armour. Using the games 14.3x overmatch rule it means you only need guns of 387mm or larger to overmatch the bow no matter the angling. It can therefore bow tank ships such as the Bismarck and Monarch (unlike the Moskva with its 25mm bow) but any ship with 16" guns can pen the bow of this ship no matter your angle. Don't try and bow tank them
1. Since carrier population is low, it is worth it to take Hydro especially since AA on DM even without DFAA is great. 2. 10k damage to destroyers is better for the team and improves your chance of winning compared to 70k damage on a battleship. Did spotter plane spot a BB? Yep. Would it have been better to radar the destroyers and kill them or ruin their health pool for the rest of the game and push them out of A? Abso fucking lutely.
Im wondering if he usually plays with a buddy who also plays the des moine. That would make sense to me if they take opposing consumbles. Would give them alot of utility in a variety of situations. What do you guys think?
What's with Jingles and other commenters saying USN Cruisers don't get hydro? They used to and the wiki still lists it (100 second duration, 3.42 km range for tier X). The USN DAA is really good, but hydro is still an option. Did something change?
While I don't think you should play a spotter plane over a radar, it HAS TO be allowed to test some stuff out. It's just randoms. Play your ship correct, cover the DDs and have fun
Although I do not own any high tier cruisers, in my Monty I enjoy swatting Royal Navy Cruisers or anyone smoke firing without considering spotter plane grants you the ability to get a fix on their positions thanks to the view angle change, so if they bang away without moving, it leads to some nasty devastating strikes and hate mail when you return to port. Maybe not as effective in a cruiser or maybe more in some cases, but it can be game changing to catch an enemy ship with their pants down. I won't argue the advantages radar grants, but if they're trying to win with their non-meta style, leave them be.
Might have done better with radar, but if you are good (and lucky) you can give away some stuff and still win. Napoleon Bonaparte: "I would rather have a general who was lucky than one who was good." See here's the issue I have with this build, it's effectively just a German Cruiser now, only without the added utility that the German Cruisers bring to the table, and less range. I'm not saying it's not something that someone could do Des Moines definitely has more DPM than Hindenburg, but at the same time, Hindenburg has more range and can do kiting HE spam far better. Purely because of having all that extra stock range. 17.8km stock range on Hindi, and 15.8km on Des Moines, and they both come with a spotter plane, just Hindi doesn't have to give up on radar to take it. To me this almost feels like a Salem taking Hydro over it's radar, though at least with Salem it's arguable witch is actually better, purely because of how bad Salem's radar is, but you could argue that Salem's radar is the better choice as it's at least big enough to spot most cap circles from safety.
my dude soccer and this are way different if you screw up or dont care on this game no harm can happen as it shouldnt. Soccer you have real people that you know who can judge you everyday. If you win a soccer game it can do alot more than if you won on this game. Trust me, try goin up to someone and say "yeah i got first place on wows and we won" then try that with soccer and youll see the difference immediately.
Actually Jingles American cruisers CAN use hydroacoustic search, they just have to trade their DFAA for it, which tbh, in the “year of the CV” there aren’t very many cv’s so it isn’t too bad to take hydro since your aa is already extremely powerful without DFAA active on the high tier American cruisers

Pretty sure someone has already said this but when you mentioned torpedoes from the Zao I think those were torpedoes from the shima. Zao torps only have a range of 8km and it was 12.4km away last I saw.

He got a bit lucky with that Shima at the end. If he had had radar the Shima wouldn't have been around for him to need to get lucky. I don't think you can make the case that it's the best loadout, it may be situationally good, but not nearly as consistent. GG in any case.

Yep, hydro and radar always on Des Moines. Cruisers keep away from Des Moines all game long and only come after you during the end game if they have full squadrons and you are low healts, so defensive fire is useless as you already have all the AA distroyed and they will get you.
If you have all your AA and you are on the move then he will not delete you.

Unconventional for sure. I do believe he made it harder with spotter plane. As you said both DDs would have been dead early in C zone capping. But also both the Zao and Moskavas made critical mistakes. Especially the Moskva...he should have known the DM was close by...also panic mode by the Zao made it easy. Hats off to Spinnaker he did what he had to do...except the mistake of switching to AP after the Zao put out the fire he was faultless.

Let's not forget that the longer range a cruiser can shoot a battleship, the less likely it is to get deleted. And as all the enemy DDs are going to assume you've got radar and avoid you, then battleships are the biggest threat to you. Might not be optimal, but I wouldn't say it's a BAD choice.
I agree. Playing "Devil's Advocate": how many ships have RADAR available? Do other spotter planes spot for everybody? (If so, why aren't they used more?) Lastly, he was able to have six spotter aircraft, how many uses of RADAR would he have had?

US Cruisers do get hydro. Des Moines can swap between Hydro or Defensive AA in the 1st consumable slot.
Spotter plane flies further from the ship and slower than the fighter, increasing time over the ocean to spot torpedoes. Spotters are like a 13km radar for ships behind islands or behind smokes. Its purely a meme build, but it can work.
He's using spotter because he's using reload mod over a range mod, so he needs the range from the spotter. Radar would've done better for him this game though. It would've spotted everything he spotted with the plane + all the dds at A.

The two enemy DDs left at the end killed half of his team. And they were exactly the two he could have radared at the start of the game and most likely taken out. Winning this game happened because the rest of the enemy was just crap.
As someone who's only ever played WOT from Wargaming, seeing more of these Warships replays lately and also hearing my friend talk about the game is tempting me into giving it a go. Excellent video as always, Jingles :D
Spotter plane is the selfish choice that increases your damage and XP while hurting your team's chances to win. If you are a radar cruiser, the enemy DDs are constantly crying for focus fire on you, compromising your ability to survive and deal damage. The friendly Z52 was the hero at the end, carrying the spotting load. If the MO kills the friendly Z52, then Spinnaker doesn't get the last 3 kills and it is a loss. If i want to max my damage, spotter plane is good. If i want to max my chances of winning, radar is better.

Avalon, it's actually 2 steps shy of Yuro's build, because spinnaker wasn't using the range enhancing upgrade in slot 6. He was using the increased RoF upgrade. You could tell from the base max range that was showing when he didn't have a spotter up.
Not every AP shell fired by U.S. ships is called "Super Heavy". The only one I know of is the Mark 8 Super Heavy shell which is a 16 inch AP shell
The 8"/55 of Baltimore (and consequently Des Moines) has a super heavy AP shell. The Mark 21 AP shell was issued to Des Moines-class, Baltimore-class, and Oregon City-class cruisers

Des Moines alongside the Tier IX Baltimore and Tier VIII New Orleans (New Orleans to a lesser extent from my experience) are capable of brawling against ships with guns that are firing up to 15" AP shells. The bow is so ridiculously sharply angled you could slice tomatoes with that thing, but because it's a heavy cruiser it carries enough weight behind it to not be overmatched by cruiser or battlecruiser guns.
My favorite thing to do in a Baltimore is to slow down to 1/4 speed and go bow on towards Bismarcks and Tirpitzes, because most of them figure that firing AP at the bow should work, but it doesn't with the high tier American cruisers because their guns are only 15" (380mm).
You can't do that with a New Orleans. It's coated in 25mm armor, which is overmstched by anything larger than 14inch guns - 358mm and up overmatch. Which is one of the reasons why the NO is so squishy - all battleships T8 and up (plus a lot of T7 and even some T6) will overmatch them. The Tirpitz & Bismarck included.
You can add all french bbs as well (except Republiqe/France). Yes, even an Alsace uses 380mm. Just sit at around 9km, just outside of his secondary range but just withing the range he has no plunging fire. Watch and drink their tears.
But you do not have trop which means that you cannot finish them fast. The most ship mounted with 15 inch gun is Alsace,Bismarck and Tirpitzes which all have too much secondary to be brawl with. They can kill you with secondary only in less than 2 mins.

Personally everyone that thinks they should comment on what he's loaded with should take a moment and remember it's not their game he is playing. He can take whatever load out he wishes and enjoy his game as he feels comfortable. For my load out I normally take DAA and Radar in random matches and swap in Hydro and Radar in clan battles but that's my choice. It does amaze me how many people on UA-cam just like in the game feel their way of playing is the only way to play. Much like the dead in game suddenly learning how to win the match even though they died in the first minute. Yeah, it's a thing. Good on him and a great match!
Eurobeat/Yuro made a video months ago about taking the spotter plane instead of radar (and taking the survivability expert skill), which was weird when I first saw it. But it kinda makes sense, considering spotter plane enables a player to spot farther (since it travels farther from your ship), hence lighting up more ships for your teammates to (hopefully) shoot at.
Yuro explains it in detail on the comments section of that video, but basically it all boils down to giving yourself an advantage while still make a contribution to your team.
I remembered when jingles said that WoWs does not have a lot of players on NA server so I was quite amazed (even that I live in EU) to see a game that I enjoy watching and suck at playing it to have good players on less populated servers. (20:27 bottom right corner). Anyway, enjoyed your video sir, and I would actually love to see a series of tips and tricks to be at least a decent player of WoWs!

For modules, I would take radar first as well... but the point of having spotting aircrafts doubled with this kind of 203mm balistic stay sensed if u like to hide or strike enemy ships hiding behind islands... with these specificities, 6spotters still interesting ofc.
Anyway, such many other things to take in count.
Best could be to take 2 similar kind of skilled players with both a DesMoines, and compare just difference between both modules on some hundreds battles, etc.
I suppose 2/3 of players choose radar, but it’s not such obvious, spotters still have assets in this case.

Two issues with your commentary on the DM setup. First, you failed to mention the very long reload on the spotter aircraft consumable. So even though he had 6 charges he could only launch 3 times. Secondly, USN cruisers do get the hydro consumable or defensive fire, and given the rate at which CVs are encountered, hydro is my choice. Personally if you are going to use a catapult plane, equip the fighter. It lasts like 4x longer and a 50% shorter cool down. The trade off is the fighter flies 1km closer to your plane and it doesn’t increase hooting range but the duration and cool down make up for this. That said, radar is the clear choice.
I’ve used spotter on the Des Moines. It sacrifices your anti-did for the ability to attack BBS far more effectively. The high arcs, and the plane lets you hit ships over Tall islands

Apart from the Moskva kill, I didn't really seen any real benefit to be had taking the spotter plane.
Battleships lose value as time goes on, due to their reliance on spotters, slow rate of fire, and crap stealth, while Destroyers gain value for all the opposite reasons (since late in the match, people have likely burned their radar consumables). Simply being able to spot and attack from stealth late game makes DDs invaluable for clinching wins, even when at critical HP.
So all that early damage on the Montana? Flashy, and stat-padding, but strategically inferior compared to killing at least TWO enemy DDs; both of whom were relevant in that match all the way until the bitter end I'll add.
That Zao for example, wouldn't have had nearly an easy time as he did vs Spinnaker, if not for the DD keeping him spotted. And even then, the Zao only died because he got greedy.
On the teamplay defensive side, the spotter plane did detect Torps, but yet, the torps the spotter aircraft detected were already obvious to anticipate, and would have been just as obvious with a radar consumable, simply by virtue of "Hey, there's two destroyers over there in that smoke screen".
Also forget that Spotter plane will give you 20% extra range on main guns. This is all good. Also doing that ammount of HP dmg to enemy montana is worth as it renders her dmg repair consumable being used up earlly in batlle. Also both those DDs got quite low on HP and had to use 2 or all 3 consumables to escape. This all ads up. We all think that kills are all but I think this is support cruiser same as Worchester and Minotaur.. For base normal games it is ok choice. I am not arguing it is better then radar but for normal game it is not teriblly bad. Also spooting torps with plane Allerts your idiot BBs that there is a wall of skill going down near them so they should pay attention. But yea radar is a better choice. I also use spoter on my Roon for that 22 km range. This alows you to be effective cruiser from far away. I also speced him in main gun range for that purpose and it is quite good. Obviouslly for randoms its good but for coimetitive fighter plane and aa deff would be better in my opinion then range. But its just my thoughts. I also think there are better cruisers for cometitive then HIndenburg.

Alexander Kidd sure. But come on, its just a game. I sometimes run a secondary build on my Montana with a range upto 9.1km on my secondaries. Not much, but any DD near me dies really quickly. Plus lots of fires on enemy Kurfursts - much to their shame, haha! Who cares? Its just a game.

US cruisers can equip Hydro, just at the cost of DFAA - I like when people try "different" things, like radar Minotaur, Reload Kagero, F3 Shima, Fire prevention GK, etc. Brings spice to the game, and keeps people guessing what loadout you are running.

Jingles, the Des Moines can indeed mount Hydroacoustic Search. It fits in the same slot as Defensive Fire/AA; more and more people on the NA server are choosing it over DFAA due to the statistical lack of CV drivers, plus it's the obvious choice for clan battles.
Seeing what everyone else is doing and doing another thing gives you a metagame advantage. If an enemy ship abandons a smokescreen because it sees a Des Moine and assumes RADAR that's good news for you as well as being able to surprise opponents with your spotter planes.
Des Moines a gun cruiser built during the paradigm shift to carriers. Not meant to stand in a battle line, but to provide a heavy artillery platform for beach landings and antiaircraft fire....

ACTUALLY JINGLES (is that how it feels? Wew, it's inhebriathing) the last conventional gun cruisers ever commissioned were the Soviet Sverdlov class, the Murmansk entered service in 1955 and stayed there until 1989.
I'll say one thing, they're a damn good shot with those slow shells.
Certainly the safer choice is the radar as one can easily argue the great strength of the DM is denying caps to enemy DDs and often killing them in the process. Given DDs are clearly the most significant ships in most battles, that's a lot to give up.
Be interested to see if using spotter planes is his usual method, and how his stats stack up (win rate, damage, exp) vs server-wide stats.

I did a range build on my Des Moines and run this setup as well. I'm able to hit ships 20-21km away with the spotter up, and 18.1km away normally. I do better running this then with a radar setup. Everyone's different in how they play so what works for some doesn't work for others. Oh and jingles please finish Ghost recon Wild Lands before you start Loan Echo again, and check out CROSSOUT.

Marvin, you're wrong. It is ENTIRELY a player's choice how to set up his ship. And you have no say in the matter. Worry about setting up your own damned ships and leave the setting up of other peoples' ships to them.
I feel like that victory doesn't make a strong argument for spotter aircraft. The victory was a due to a combination of Spinakker's skill, his team's skill, and mistakes made by the opposing team; The spotters didn't make much of a difference. IMO the problem with the catapault aircraft has always been the long cooldown timers (4 minutes!). If the direction center decreased the cooldown, it'd be more worthwhile.

There’s actually another advantage to using the spotter plane. It gives you a nice overhead view which you can use to more accurately land shots and shoot people who are firing in a smoke screen.

I so rarely play conventional. Surprise by being different can make for more success. That showed up in Spinnaker's game today. Being different is being wrong. Some think it stupid, but you be amazed how often playing unconventionally works.
I recent went into a Clan Wars battle with my JPN Tier X Shimakaze with the Type F3 (8km/76 knots) Torpedoes loaded. Most would us 12 or 20 km. Of course I ran into 3 enemy DD and with my faster reload and quick Torpedoes. I sank 2 of 3, and damaged the 3rd before they got me. We won!!
Well the spotter plane build does appear to work but I admit I will stick with the radar on my Des, but honestly I was more surprised he didn't shoot at the enemy teams destroyers more rather than the Frederick when he had the chance as they were an obvious threat to the team and seeing how they did it might have helped the team more,

Nice amount of damage and good positioning to keep the guns singing. Enemy team did kind of let him do it though. You give a Des Moines free reign like that and it's never going to end well. I do think it would have been good to point out that in the time he spent pounding the BB that he never killed at the start he could have racked up substantial damage on 2 DD's...then moved onto pounding the Battleship(Which had been spotted by another friendly, not the cat planes). XP from damage is calculated by percentage of target ships HP, not on the big number in the top right corner there. A Des Moines can consistently take 25% of a Shima's HP in one salvo. How many salvos did it need to do 25% damage to the battleship?
But please, all Des Moines run this build. I've come accross 2 so far...in 1 game and they were divisioned. Earned me a nice little double strike in my Gearing parked 7km off their Port bow. Any idea that a DD will be scared enough of just the name Des Moines is gone the moment we see planes lift off the deck or circle over head. Very quickly switches from "Oh shit, get it off me!" to "Oh yes...nom nom nom"
To briefly correct a slight error made in this video. The Des Moines has 27mm of bow armour. Using the games 14.3x overmatch rule it means you only need guns of 387mm or larger to overmatch the bow no matter the angling. It can therefore bow tank ships such as the Bismarck and Monarch (unlike the Moskva with its 25mm bow) but any ship with 16" guns can pen the bow of this ship no matter your angle. Don't try and bow tank them
1. Since carrier population is low, it is worth it to take Hydro especially since AA on DM even without DFAA is great.
2. 10k damage to destroyers is better for the team and improves your chance of winning compared to 70k damage on a battleship. Did spotter plane spot a BB? Yep. Would it have been better to radar the destroyers and kill them or ruin their health pool for the rest of the game and push them out of A? Abso fucking lutely.

What's with Jingles and other commenters saying USN Cruisers don't get hydro? They used to and the wiki still lists it (100 second duration, 3.42 km range for tier X). The USN DAA is really good, but hydro is still an option. Did something change?

Although I do not own any high tier cruisers, in my Monty I enjoy swatting Royal Navy Cruisers or anyone smoke firing without considering spotter plane grants you the ability to get a fix on their positions thanks to the view angle change, so if they bang away without moving, it leads to some nasty devastating strikes and hate mail when you return to port. Maybe not as effective in a cruiser or maybe more in some cases, but it can be game changing to catch an enemy ship with their pants down. I won't argue the advantages radar grants, but if they're trying to win with their non-meta style, leave them be.

Though oddly, the last ever gun cruisers (the Soviet Sverdlov class) are only available as a premium (the Mikhail Kutuzov).

You can slot Hydro on the Des Moines if you forgo the defensive AA. That’s what I do in clan battled since there are no carriers.

See here's the issue I have with this build, it's effectively just a German Cruiser now, only without the added utility that the German Cruisers bring to the table, and less range. I'm not saying it's not something that someone could do Des Moines definitely has more DPM than Hindenburg, but at the same time, Hindenburg has more range and can do kiting HE spam far better. Purely because of having all that extra stock range. 17.8km stock range on Hindi, and 15.8km on Des Moines, and they both come with a spotter plane, just Hindi doesn't have to give up on radar to take it.
To me this almost feels like a Salem taking Hydro over it's radar, though at least with Salem it's arguable witch is actually better, purely because of how bad Salem's radar is, but you could argue that Salem's radar is the better choice as it's at least big enough to spot most cap circles from safety.

my dude soccer and this are way different if you screw up or dont care on this game no harm can happen as it shouldnt. Soccer you have real people that you know who can judge you everyday. If you win a soccer game it can do alot more than if you won on this game. Trust me, try goin up to someone and say "yeah i got first place on wows and we won" then try that with soccer and youll see the difference immediately.
Actually Jingles American cruisers CAN use hydroacoustic search, they just have to trade their DFAA for it, which tbh, in the “year of the CV” there aren’t very many cv’s so it isn’t too bad to take hydro since your aa is already extremely powerful without DFAA active on the high tier American cruisers

Pretty damn impressive. Had to watch it twice. Definitely the game you should (and thank goodness you did) show, so I suggest next time you find something unorthodox... just make a video out of it wo thinking twice :)
Pretty sure someone has already said this but when you mentioned torpedoes from the Zao I think those were torpedoes from the shima. Zao torps only have a range of 8km and it was 12.4km away last I saw.
