    I grew up in Budapest. I miss everything about it. It was so nice to see my hometown. Thank you for sharing your experience also the perfect pronunciation of Budapest. Hope one day I can return and see it all and hug my family. I have watched your visit in Szentendre where my Mum lives. Brought tears in my eyes.

    Nice review on my city, but about the affordability: it's only affordable for certain forigners or if you have a highly payed profession. The average salary is around 800-900 $. Now that rent is not so affordable.

      Hey, thanks for reaching out! Good point about the affordability of Budapest. As in most places, for people earning a local wage, most places tend to even out. However, for expats, digital nomads, or tourists, Budapest definitely offers some financial advantage to other European cities.

    I agree. Just been there in Budapest from May 13th to June 2nd stayed in two properties in the 5th and 7th Dist. Main plusses not touristy, excellent public transport hardly any waiting , I used buses, trams and metro. Lot of cafes and lot of grocery stores. Loved the thermal baths. Only downside and shocker most of the people either does not know English nor willing to talk to English. I felt locals not so welcoming of visitors, more like a land locked place. Hopefully they become more open minded in the years to come, but does not take away the city’s charm and the historic sites. I would love to visit again for a much more longer stay. Cheers 😀

    Hi Tyler. My partner and I are considering moving to Budapest because of a job offer. We currently live in Oslo, Norway and I've never even visited Budapest. How do you feel about living in the city now that a few more months have gone by? Hope to hear from you!

    • @Tyler_Teacher
      @Tyler_Teacher  2 роки тому +4

      Hey Jordan, thanks for watching! While I’ve never been to Oslo, I’m sure you’ll find Budapest to be far more affordable. From February through May I witnessed the city come to life more each day. By the time I left in late may, the parks were full as were the many squares, and I’d totally fallen for the city. Budapest seems to me to be one of the most underrated options for expats not just in Europe, but worldwide. It’s a vibrant capitol city with easy access to nature and the rest of Europe. Of course your life at will vary wildly based on what type of work opportunities you have, but no matter what you’re looking for I feel confident that you’ll be able to find it in Budapest!

    I thought about living there, I have been 3 times.. Its actually hard after awhile the language barrier, you would think a lot of the young people know English well.. that wasn't my experience, it drop me crazy after awhile.. @Tyler_Teacher  Рік тому +1

      Hey John, thanks for reaching out. You bring up a very interesting and often overlooked point. Language barriers can be a massive challenge as an expat. I now live in Prague, where the language barrier makes it difficult to do simple everyday tasks. Through my years of travel, I've learned to prioritize places in which I'm at least interested and open to learning a bit of the language. For this reason, I find I often consider moving back to Spain.

    • @Tyler_Teacher
      @Tyler_Teacher  Рік тому

      I experience this very thing on a daily basis with my Czech partner here in Prague. On the one hand, I understand the desire for efficiency of communication, but on the other, having to rely on anyone, let alone a partner to do simple tasks can be rather dehumanizing.

      Bus 291 takes you to the chairlift from Nyugati railway station. The bus station is next to it. You have to go to the end station. You can buy a public transport pass at Terminal 2b of the airport for the duration of your stay. All Public Transport can be used. Except airport bus and chair lift. I always look for accommodation by using Google map and typing in Accommodation Budapest. Write the prices immediately. I don't recommend the chairlift area because it's far away, I'd rather recommend the city center. You have a question, I can answer it.

      Hey there Susan, thanks for reaching out! I made this video back in March of 2022, so I can't reliably speak to the current rental market in Budapest. I rented that Airbnb for 4 months.

      @@Tyler_Teacher we had 5 days and 4 nights in Budapest last week. Really enjoyed the city, easy to get around once you figure out which end of the metro ticket to validate. We had pretty good weather so that helps.

      It’s always great to hear a locals perspective! My stay in Budapest was always meant to be temporary, but I must say, it was difficult to leave after 4 months.

    It's interesting how folks do this: 1-month in a place and here are my reactions. You made this in February, so as you say, it is not possible way to assess the "normal" tourist flow that inundates the city beginning in April, or so. The cost of riding public transportation has already increased- it's now $1.32. After living (and loving) Budapest for 2-years, my experience is, yes, you can get by using only English, but it's case-by-case whether you run into people who can speak English. Lastly, you did not mention the nearly pervasive "dourness" that culturally exists in Hungary. It's easier to sense this objectively, once you travel to adjacent countries where the cultural tone is "happier," "more hopeful," and in a customer-service sense, simply "friendlier." I am referring to Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia, where people are generally more welcoming.

      Orban is a skilled fascist who knows how to make the right friends. We've got our own hands full here trying to hold on to what we have. If the trains run on time and you only need two kinds of bathrooms a lot of people will be happy to give up the "Thomas Jefferson sailing across the Potomac while skinning a grizzly bear" ideal for a few years.
