As a self employed master electrician in Chicago - I cannot tell you how many times I am asked to repair something non-electrical while I am doing electrical work at a person's home. I have hung many of doors and used a razor knife and chisel to do the hinge cutouts. I recently purchase the Ryobi door hinge template for my compact router. OMG! Absolutely perfect cutouts every time, uniform depth and cosmetically perfect. Best money I ever spent!
How is it being cut out did not see the equipment
Might be the only ryobi tool I would recommend no offense to the neon green gang
Great tutorial! One thing I would add is when measuring the location of the hinges on the door, use the old door as your guide for placement of the hinges on the new door. For the top hinge on the new door, measure from the top of the old door to the top of the first hinge. Transfer that measurement to the new door. Same for the second and third hinge -- measure from the top of the door down to the top of the hinges.
Thanks east!
I actually think the OP's method is better. Just line the doors up, clamp them together, and use a straightedge to mark where the hinges go. Easier, faster, and more foolproof. (At least I hope so because that's the way I'm going to do it!)
@@ToolReviewZone EXCELLENT video, BTW.
Not everyone has the old door tho....
@@punkdrummr2000 yeah we'll good point . What is the name of the cut out tool or machine
I just purchased this kit and I'm about to install two interior and an exterior door. This tutorial was a big help! Thanks for the upload.
Hey Jon, thanks for the great feedback. I glad it helped!
Just saw a coworker with one yesterday. Honestly never knew Ryobi made this. And I comes with the it too. Way to go Ryobi. Now they just need to make one for the door jambs where you need to add hinges on an existing door jamb.😂
I know this is an old post but I just purchased one of these and this was the first review video I came to. Very helpful. After watching I'm ready to give it a try. The only difference with the kit I bought is it also comes with a self centering drill bit for the hinge screws. This was great. Thanks for posting.
Great tutorial! If you are using a fixed router, there is also a nice little jog in the support fence that's gives you room to set the bit in and start your cut off the door. They thought of pretty much everything with this jig.
Awesome tutorial! I like watching videos over reading the manual and yours was very straightforward. You explained the "whats" and the "whys" perfectly! Thank you.
Thanks for the awesome comment Michael! Glad it helped buddy
Tool Review Zonem
Loved staring at your arm while you actually used the kit. Good job. 👍
This tutorial was great! It really helped me a lot. I don't understand how anyone could dislike this video. Great job on the production of the video. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks do much for the awesome comment Drew! I'm really happy it helped you out buddy!
Crazy people out there half probably just because of brand others never done anything in this world worth anything.
Agreed, we're getting this content free of charge (besides ads). Plus this helps you determine if you don't want this jig bc you think it's junk, so regardless of the outcome it's going to help you out.
Thanks Celeb for the awesome comment buddy
I just use one,the thickness adjustment screw was stucked,i was thinking it was gonna break .
Anyway, the bad thing about it is the plastic made.
But that aside ,it works great, never before in my life install a wood door, but this device made it all.really easy.
Thank for the review, picked one up today, they've made some changes but essentially the same unit. I had a metal set 20 years ago that cost me 4x what this one did, didn't come with the router bit, AND the one I got has the center punch/pre drill combo bit also stores on tool. LOVE IT..
There will always be some who say "don't buy the jig", "takes too long", "just freehand the router", etc. But for all of us do it yourselfers, a great video! Thanks!
Thanks Mike, I appreciate the comment buddy.
Bought one and it made my life better... Thanks for the tips... Great tool.. I just hope I can find it in my garage next time I'll need it...HAHA!!!
Thanks for the comment big!
It's a great tool. Its a bit flimsy, but has never failed and it's the only model I've found that doesn't need to be screwed to the door. This tool has made me money,
Thank you! installing my first doors, used a chisel for the first hinge cut out and I was horrible. Have a small palm router and plan on using the template to make them look and function way better.
Its a good jig!
For that money you can’t even buy a good flush bit.....and it comes with one!!
Awesome value
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I’m ordering one right now.
You are very welcome and thanks for the comment French!
Excellent explanation don’t know how you could have made it any better thank you!
Thanks Rick!!!
Bought one today. First thing I did was view your tutorial...Excellent job!
Thayd awesome to hear Del. I really think you will like it
Thank You I bought one today I know how to use it now I have lots of doors to be done
Great review. Always wanted to grab one of these for years. I think I’m going to pull the trigger.
It's an awesome little tool Jazz. Not expensive either
Bought one of these at the request of a HD guy. And a 1.5 inch chisel.. tried the old fashion way for 30 minutes. Looked up tuts on you tube, found this one and hung my first new door hung in 15 minutes. Can't thank you enough for the tut.
Awesome work. Now, I wonder, can I return the chisel.
Any time Clifford. You can use a chisel if needed, but it's really ment for a router. Sucks they did not just tell you that in the first place.
Ps. They should return it if you tell them the wrong tool was recommend to you
For all the people asking if this can do the jamb, I believe you can use this template to rout out a piece of thin wood the width of your door and then use that as the template after installing the door stop by simple holding it in plate or temporarily using a nail or a screw. I’ll be able to tell you how that goes in a few days as I have this same kit and I’ll be giving it a go.
I have the one for the doorknob and the one for the strike side. It's a huge help. I'm getting this one Tuesday
Thank you. This was a great demonstration. Going out to buy this jig now!
Thanks for the kind feedback Enoch. Glad it helped!
Nice job on the review. I agree every day use with the plastic hold down screw will eventually fail.. Good job, nice features on the tool.
Seen about 4 videos of this thing and they all complained about the rounded corner. None of them knew that you could flip the corner to make it square. Your video is the only one that mentions this.
I'm doing 5 interior doors in my homeand because of your videos I'm buying the 3 Ryobi tools. Thanks man!
Thanks for the awesome comment Bedtime!
Great video...I agree... wish it was built a little better. I bought it and the first cut was perfect...second cut the slide moved on me a little and the cut was just a little off. Overall it worked good.
Thank you for this great review and sharing how to use it correctly.
Very good, informative video. This electrician thanks you!
That is so cool. I can't believe they thought to put a fence on it for a trim router, brilliant...
I'm going to buy one this weekend.
I know what you mean about metal on tools, but for a jig, it's nice and light, and the modern reinforced plastics are really strong. Great review. Thanks
Yeah buddy, I love this thing!
Ok. Good video. I noticed a few small differences between your model of the template and mine. They've made a couple of changes since you purchased yours and they addressed the flat support area for the router you mentioned. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback Jim! I've heard that they improved a few things which is a good thing to see 👊
Thank you, im doing this tomorrow on 5 doors this jig is so user friendly, thank you ( subscriber) 👍
Well done. Simple and easy to follow. Thanks!
You got it John thanks!
Love this kit!! We have the exact same one!
Yeah, this works really well and can beat it for the price. I replaced every door on my house using this. They also have a really cool latch install tool that I posted
This is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you.
Any time Rick. Thanks for the comment
Great tutorial... I have some doors that I need to install, I think this is now going to be purchased.
Any time Eddie. Very simple to use!
Thanks. Just what I need to install these doors in my home.
Most hinges have two different radius or corners, a 1/4" or 5/8" , is this corner jig only able to copy the !/4" hinge?
Thanks..... going to use this tomorrow for 12 new doors..... Wish me luck!
You got this. good luck!!!
Thanks,,,,, It actually was so easy to do! I just took each door to where I was going to hang it and placed it into the frame, used a small screwdriver under the door to use as a wedge to move it to the proper height so that it is close to the top but a small space on top and took a pencil to match and mark the hinge placement and every one of the doors fit perfectly! So easy to do! Thanks for the video!
+Daddy & Jilly Show glad it worked out for you. any time!
It's Jilly pcloo
I assume that Ryobi mortisse jig does not also fit on the door jamb? Do you have a video for the other half of this door mounting job?
Jim Falco good question 🤔
Great Video, I have the same template, my problem is I could not keep the door straight so the door kept moving hence the router would move, I kind of see of how you kept to door straight. You clamped it to two 4x4s?
Tool Review Zone : Great hands-on review. Thanks.
Thanks Adam!
Tool Review Zone : Thank YOU: The HD third-party "partner" came in with a quote of $400 for installing EACH of 3 interior doors! I think I'll be ordering the Ryobi, and one or another of the lockset jigs, to install them myself!
Wow $400! You can definitely do those doors in about 30 minutes with this. Glad it helped!
Awesome video buddy. Really appreciate the time taken to create this!
Is the router you used the RYOBI 18V ONE+ Cordless Fixed Base Trim Router with Tool Free Depth Adjustment? What is the difference between that one and the RYOBI 8.5 Amp 1-1/2 Peak HP Router
Excellent video! I don’t think anyone could have made it any clearer or straight forward. For someone like me who’s doesn’t know anything, it would have been great to show what the router looks like.
Thanks Howard, really appreciate the comment buddy
I have some hinges that have a square and radius side. Which side goes where? Can I put the square on the jamb and the curve on the door?
The nylon vise screw is adequate in my view.. The adjustable plate has four skid pads attached to it. All you need to do is to make sure the jig is flush to the door edge. Then, tighten the vise screw until it contacts the door side. Then tighten another half to 3/4 turn. Try to slide it with your hand. That is plenty of hold for the routing. If you tighten further, it actually warps the jig slightly and could throw your rout off a little. I found their bit provides the best fit for the hinges. If you use square hinges, a sharp chisel or the Porter Cable squaring chisel makes quick work of the adjustment needed. For $25, it did a number of replacement doors for me and could do a bunch more. I also have the Stanley TH8 jig, but that is best for new doors and jambs. Using the old door clamped to the new as a guide to locate the hinges ( with a combination square) avoids any measuring.
Thank you for the super tutorial.
Excellent review and demo. Who the hell would give this a thumbs down?
I was hesitant within give thumb up or down. I choose "down".
1) the explanation is to wordy and it goes round and about, taking too much of my time.
2) always talk about chisel that never showed up
@@yevgeniyafanasyev364 I bought the tool at home depot and watched the video while driving back to the job. It was nice to know exactly how to use the tool. I have mixed feelings on the tool. The tool raises up from the door when I tighten the clamp which makes the router make shallow cuts in the door
Great video...You are a natural teacher
That looks like a 5/8” radius hinge. Is there a different corner guide for 1/4” hinges?
Great explanations and demonstration, thank you!!!
Has anyone found a place to get the replacement parts to do round corner hinges.. those things get torn up so quickly
I'm buying one in about 6 hrs. Replacing mom and dad's bathroom door now, will be replacing 7 more sometime in the near future. I tried chiseling, but that was ugly. A day and a half ago, I started thinking that something like this had to exist.
So you can adjust the length of the hinge you cut out for, but not the width of the leaf of the hinge?
Excellent explanation! Thank you
You feel like it is going to break? I've used it many times without breaking. Cross that bridge when you get there sparky.
What is available for checking out the door frame side of the hinge?
Using it now. Great video thanks
Will that work with just a normal power drill? I don't have that router tool.
Be awsome to use the ryobi multi tool with the ridgid router attachment.
For most part video was good even though your wrist was in the way at first when you began to router out hinge area though did get it how to go about routing out the area using the tool.
As for the plastic piece you mentioned you wish could been metal maybe ryobi wanted to use plastic stead of metal hold down screw being would mar the project so they decided plastic was better to use but if person wanted metal they could go to hardware store buy right size screw even may have a specialty screw with the T look or create one by drilling hole through the end of a square headed screw afixing a small metal dowell through the head of metal screw to look like the plastic one on the hinge tool just a thought only problem is that metal screw working in plastic would eventually wear plastic threads down faster then plastic with plastic.
Nevertheless great video thanks for the demo👍
Yeah this was one of my first videos. I try to stay out of the way now lol. Thanks for the comment!
Can you use this on an MDF door? Or is the wood composite gonna come apart?
Excellent tutorial... Great Job Thank you.
Thanks Zachary!
Thank you for the great details bro
Good tutorial. I've watched several that cover the DOOR mortice. Where are those that show the FRAME side mortice? Have I missed something obvious?
How do you cut the curved hinge cut out on the door FRAME in exactly the right position, to match the door?
I use a tape measure, a sharp pencil, and a router. Measure from top inside of jamb to where ever you want your hinge to be( add 1/8" for door clearance), mark it, then trace out the shape of hinge. Use the router resting on the door stop and free hand cut the trace out. Remember to off set away from the stop enough to clear for hinge swing. Practice on a piece of scrap a few times and it will be easy after that.
Awesome!!! Thanks bro for this helpful video
Great tutorial, thank you.
Any time Lety, and thanks for the comment!
Great video! Love all those tools for the door. My issue is the strike plate being positioned correctly on the door jamb so that the lock can't be popped open! It's amazing how few ppl that DIY realize that if your installing hardware that locks & if the striker plate isn't just right, Anyone can just pop that lock in less than 3 seconds! Scary really! Yeah I have a deadbolt that secures the door, but why pay for a lock on the bottom if it means nothing when not installed correctly. Your videos are Great & would LOVE if you'd do a video about that!
Great video! I'm ready to cut now!
+Dennis Downes awsome, good luck!
Seriously awesome video definitely going to be a subscriber
Thanks!
thank you! this is the best video on how to use the ryobi hinge template
Really good information 👍. Thx dude.
I noticed you installed a 3 1/2" hinge with a 5/8" radius. How do make a 1/4" radius with this jig? Or can you?
Thanks, I didn't think of that for some reason. It worked out very well. The jig is actually pretty nice.
i may have missed but i am asking if you could show the router more? i've never used one, not sure what it looks like as a whole, only got a glimpse of the router. also how do you hookup the bit to the router? can you show which brand/model router you used as well? thank you kindly!
+sunshine always powers ua-cam.com/video/L1uxaGdOYSI/v-deo.html
This is the router that I used. Should help you learn how to use it
thank you Sir!
Thanks for making such video very, very helpful. A + Rating
Thanks Noisy Boy. Your comment made my day!
hinge mate HM1100W is all aluminum and brass pins if you want a stronger one. works with oversize bearings as well but not too cheap
Great review. Thanks!
Great video. Thanks for all of that work posting. I have a jig made by Porter Cable that you hold in place with removable nails and can place it anywhere you like. It has lines to help you judge the distance from the door edge. The advantage is that you can control how close to the long edge of the door you want the hinge. (Example, 1/8” or 3/16”). Can that be done with this jig?
+James Mason thanks so much for the comment! I have been looking for other jigs like this, but only found very expensive ones. I am going to check it out bud!
Tool Review Zone Thanks my man. We don’t need expensive. HAA. Just something similar to this with that adjustability. I think it’s crucial when doing a retrofit. I’ll look too and let’s see who finds something first and shares here. Peace.
@@Jimmy_Cavallo so... Neither of you found anything yet?
Lil Stack'n oh yea. I was supposed to be shopping around. Haa. Not yet.
Bro awesome demonstration!
Thanks brother 👊
Will the router jig for a Dremel work?
can i use this tool for Thermatru fiberglass doors?
Great tutorial thanks!
+Timothy Rodis Any time Timothy, thanks for the comment!
Excellent review. Thank you very much Sir.
Thanks Chris and you are welcome!!!
works ok on mortising the door. I have to monitor the spacing for the length of the hinge... the template won't lock in place. BUT I also have a jamb to mortise. No one seems to address this with the same detail as the door. I rate this kit as incomplete.
Will this work to mortise the jamb?
Man that tool is great the only problem is that I don't buy Ryobi. I guess I have to wait for Makita or Milwaukee to come out with one. I got to tell you that was a great video you did thank you for taking the time and doing it. Peace
They won't. I waited for a couple years before breaking down and getting the Ryobi. Surprisingly Ryobi makes the best door knob jig as well since they are the only ones with the strike plate locator tab.
This jig will work for any plunge router, or the Dremel plunge router. Don't need Ryobi router.
Thank you for your live instructions. Awesome.
Any time Rigelio!
You used something control size of chisel, what’s that
I wish I knew about this sooner. Now I got to get a new door a cordless dewalt router and a 5ah battery and this. Not to mention a band aid for my finger after trying to Chisel it out. 🙄
When. I. Installed a door handle I. Used a hoe saw bit did not have one of those back years ago
I love a good hoe.
Good info. Thx . Just subscribed with a thumbs up.
Thanks and welcome to the channel John!!!
nice sleeve.
What is the name of the exact tool for the cut out
Why is it not available anymore in store?
how do you use it on doorway?
Great review
