I'm a Shinkyokushin karateka, but learned Kyokushin before changing branches, I'm proud to see people all over the world practice. We get better every chance we get. dakentaijutsu2010 there are some differences. Take for example the first kata Taikyoko sono ichi. Instead of going straight to the punch, we have to lift our fist. In Kyokushin we don’t do that. Small differences easy to learn and get used to. But yes, same style and different organization.

I know this video is several years old but mad respect. I just took my 1st kyu test a few weeks ago and the start is easy but the finish is difficult. By the end I could hardly stand and just wanted to fall over. Yet I remained and stood throwing everything I had until it the buzzer sounded. I hope this guy continued because he showed great determination and spirit. Osu!

  • @jtlbb2

I don’t mean to sound disrespectful. But other than how tough the practitioners are, I’m unimpressed by Kyokushin sparring. These guys are simply going toe-to-toe. They’re literally standing squarely in front of each other trading blows, so it's not surprising that 99% of the time the larger stronger fighter will just bulldoze over his opponent.
Kyokushin allows leg kicks... but do they not learn how to check kicks? Literally every Kyokushin video I’ve seen they simply stand there absorbing the kick. It’s actually very impressive how they can just take the kicks, but my goodness no one can do that for too long.
So for conditioning and toughness, Kyokushin is a 10/10. In fact, I’d say the majority of the time a Kyokushin fighter defeats someone of another style it seems the main deciding factor is the toughness of the Kyokushin fighter.
But for skill and strategy, it’s basically just brawling with some karate kicks and body punches. So 2/10.

Although I stopped training in Kyokushin some 20 years ago, doesn't the belt system still go: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, and black? (I made it to blue back in the day). The spinning heel kick to the back of the knee was dirty. Black belts should know better than that. The blue belt is obviously not a fighter and it shows. It is obvious he has no experience even sparring. He is winded when that black belt hits him in the back of the knee.
Completsly unneccessary. The guy is so winded he just becomes everyone's punching bag.
He isn't learning anything from this.
I have zero respect for anyone that does this to non fighters and those with no real sparring experience.

One thing about Kyokushin, Enshin, Ashi and others. They never seem to have any real footwork or elusiveness.
Just straight ahead plodding in most cases. I find it odd when I hear about Tai Sabaki but see more of just backing up in a straight line, and occasional circling.
Tough arts no doubt, I guess if you're focus is competition its okay.
    I'm more self defense oriented.

Honestly, it's ironic you should say that, since elusiveness and footwork were mostly put in place for competition. And are avoided for self defense. The logic is that you don't want to risk falling. It's part of why old school full contact today guys used to beat a lot of karate guys in karate tournament. Because they had better movement, and it helped for competitions.

I wonder what you know about self defense at all. All encounters/brawls I witnessed in eastern Europe were devoid of any "elusive" footwork or whatever.

so this is how karatekas advance belts? seems more like group bullying to me. You guys don't even care about his injuries. He should have been out since the moment he almost got his knee popped at 4:48. Also, it looks like he passed the exam just by "surviving". He didn't seem to do any kind of decent attacking nor defending.. Anyway, this karate sport feels hypocritical since you can kick the head but not punch it...that double standard confuses the mind and hinders your readiness to defend your head.. as you expected, I think MMA is the only way of learning to fight.. just mix as many martial arts as you need until you feel like you are truly expressing the potential of your body.

It's the budo samuari spirit that lives within kyokushin, it's a deep rooted culture and not for everyone but that's the way. It's not bullying, it's pushing yourself to your absolute limit, and then beyond, it's a true test mentally as much as physically. At the last rounds it's all about ''surviving'' and showing your will power to be able to keep standing up, that's kyokushin. I must admit tho to that these higher grades did some unnecessary stuff, too much head kicks, knock out techniques etc. It's not a bloody knock out tournament.. However, while MMA obviously does teach more aspect to fighitng, it's not really comparable to kyokushin. I am myself a kyokushin Brown belt but I've done some MMA as well, but knock down (kyokushin) sparring is by far the most exhausting/hard type of sparring in my opinion, and it really condition your mind and body, you will for sure know how to take a proper beating and still be able to stand up and deliver. And if you don't protect your head you will end up getting knees and kicks so you always gotta protect your head. And btw in my dojo we do sparr sometimes with punches to the head as well. So It's an excellent martial art in my opinion with both culture, philosophy and hard sparring.

It is not so easy to land a kick to the face when an opponent keeps the pressure on you. These guys can fight at all ranges but you can see here that as other karate styles they get inside. Second of all karate in general does contain grappling, some styles emphasize more than others and generally it is used to set up strikes however it is there. They don’t punch each other on the face on kumite but if they do happen to land a kick to the head it is game. Observe that there is no protective gear, I have seen instances as in other karate styles where there is not even gloves so clearly in order to practice with some degree of safety some compromises are necessary. Last, try sparring with one of these guys, they can hit and take it.
