DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002): AWFULLY GOOD MOVIES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2021
- With Daniel Craig finally hanging up his martini glass in his final Bond adventure NO TIME TO DIE, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at the far less critically praised final film of Craig’s predecessor in the role, Pierce Brosnan, which forced the Bond franchise to reboot from the very beginning: DIE ANOTHER DAY. Though its first 25 minutes promise the best Bond to date--aside from Madonna’s techno-drone theme song--the rest of the movie cranks up the silliness dial somewhere between OCTOPUSSY and the 60s version of CASINO ROYALE, despite the presence of Halle Berry and a young Rosamund Pike.

“Hong Kong’s our turf now Bond”
“Yes well I’m not here to take it back…”
Possibly the best exchange in any Bond film ever.
Pierce Brosnan is one of my favorite James Bonds.
He is my favourite m8.
@@trainlover16 🙂👍🏻
14 months in a north Korean prison and he managed to put on 3 lbs. That's even more impressive that surfing the ice tsunami
Love the fact that we officially have two reviews of Die another Day on JoBlo
Fun fact: die another day was also nominated for a kids choice award for favorite movie in 2003
Damn, really? The movie that starts with Bond getting tortured by the North Koreans, and ends with him banging Halle Berry on a piles of diamonds? That's fucking crazy. 😂
What kids were watching Die Another Day? Even when it came out I got a vibe that it wasn't gonna be another Golden Eye so I didn't even try to go.
@@gentlemanjared That's the fact
After 15 years of serious Bond, going back and watching Bond on steroids is refreshing lol
Fun fact: Inside an ice structure, the temperature never goes too far below 0ºC (32ºF). This is why Eskimos have been fine living in igloos for millennia.
This is the best Pierce Bronson Bond movie. The chemistry with him and Halle was awesome. The intro action scene was spectacular. Hey he was “saved by the bell” 😂😂
The invisible car that also makes no imprint of tires in the snow. Amazing!
Despite the dodgy CGI, I enjoyed this movie. Especially the sword fight... That was top notch!
Anyhoo... "Butterfinger"!!!!! LOL
@Rita 25 y.o - check my vidéó Yeah, there's a big drop in tone, but as a fan of Moonraker, I don't mind a bit of silliness.
I watched this movie a lot when I was a kid
It’s kinda incredible how the Die Another Day theme is MORE dated than the Duran Duran A View To A Kill theme.
That View to Kill song is sooo good.
Are you kidding the view to kill song is awesome driving song
@@mikewaite3746 I dig it too but it’s undeniably a product of its time. A Rubix cube dressed like Gordon Gekko doing cocaine in a DeLorean wouldn’t be as 80’s as that song.
I'm with the one guy here arguing that the song is very much a product of its time. We all remember Duran Duran crooning ..."a view, to a KILLLL" but seem to forget that the rest of the song was essentially in the tempo/vein of the "DANCE, INTO THE FYE,YER..." portion.
Though Grace Jones, Christopher Walken, and Ivan Drago of all people in one scene is enough to put it in the running for greatest Bond film ever 😍
This was the most bad ass film I've ever seen when I was a kid, it shamefully introduced me to the franchise.
Bond films are like sex; your first time is on itself great despite the following times.
Mine is Goldeneye
I thought it was quite entertaining indeed, however I did watch it after consuming many a martini (shaken not stirred)!
I was drunk on youthfulness. I adored this film as a kid when it came out
This is why No Time To Die is such a great movie. It's causing us to re-evaluate the other bad Bond movies and think, "Hey, you know this one isn't so bad, actually!"
This film gets a lot of flak from Bond fans, but it's one of my favourites. Yes, the CGI is a bit ropey at times, but the gadgets and characters are great. Well aside from Mister Kill. They should have killed his character off before he even appeared on screen.
Absolutely one of my guilty pleasure Bonds. Also love Moonraker, which is far better than a lot of people give it credit for.
Yeah, it's just fun. It lacks greatness due to how janky it is, but it's outrageously camp and enjoyable.
Die Another Day is also a guilty pleasure of mine. As a huge Bond fan too. I only really dislike the finale on the plane, but the rest of the movie is never boring. Far from it.
It's a fun movie for sure, but it doesn't draw me in like many of the Bond movies did. The plot is too hectic and it never really gets into a rhythm, at least for me. It is still a Bond movie, so it's always worth watching and I loved it when I was a teenager and it was released.
@@MikaelLV Yeah, you can say a lot about Die Another Day, but it's certainly not boring.
Always thought a female spy side serie with halle berry/jinx as lead would be good, and was laughted at...
Fast forward 20 years and watch her performance in John wick.
Now imagine what she would have done in her prime
Honestly it probably would have turned out terrible anyways… Most of the action movies of the early/mid 00s were awful
It took those 20 years for Halle to learn to act.
this movie was more fun than SPECTRE
I legit forgot the name of that movie. It was that forgettable. And the name was freaking Spectre! So you know it was bad
This is my favourite of the Brosnan era, lots of fun and some great action, along with a great deal of silliness. It was a throwback to the Moore era really!
This is an entertaining Bond adventure. The 3rd act needed a bit of tweaking but I otherwise don't believe it to be anywhere near the worst Bond film.
What do you think is worse than this one ? Hope you're not gonna say any of the Daniel Craig ones .
@@vincehenriquez680 lots! None of them are the Craig era films...except Quantum perhaps...
@@vincehenriquez680 DND definitely isn’t one of the better bond films but it’s better than Quantum of Solace, which is arguably the worst bond ever made.
@@midniteee that's what I'm asking though is that you think that one's really worse than say the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel Roger Moore or Sean Connery ones?
@@vincehenriquez680 tbh I think it is worse than even the bad Roger Moore films. QOS is just a mess from start to finish, actions scenes are so shaky you can’t even make out what’s happening, the script is very poorly written as well. It’s not just a bad bond movie, it’s just a bad movie overall.
I'm in the minority but Die Another Day is my favourite Bond movie - it made me a hardcore Bond fan. Gadget Laden, Super cars, Space lasers, a battle in the Air, a great sword fight sequence and an original action pack pre-credits sequence, I was hooked from the moment it began. Alas, I was surprised at the reception from other Bond fans and have admitted that my opinion may only be shared by a few.
You are in a minority! Unique. Lol
It was my favorite Bond movie for years. Now Goldeneye is my favorite. But Die Another Day is in my top five Bond films.
@@MovieTimeWithMTCool. Goldeneye is really good - though I hope David Arnold would do his version of its soundtrack. Anyways it's nice to know that there are other Die Another Day fans out there 😄
@@bobsmithy9024 As a matter of interest, what's your favourite Bond film?
GoldenEye? Die Another Day? The best Bonds are from the 60's. From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, those the best.
Objectively speaking, it’s terrible. But it also came out when I was 10yrs old. Did the movie flaws matter at that time? Nah. Did the insane gadgets and ridiculous action completely capture my attention? You bet. This is one of my biggest guilty pleasures.
Very much the same story!
Same. Plus, seeing Halle Berry in that bikini was a formidable experience for me... 😅
I reckon Rose Pike and Halle Berry read the script and realise they shouldn't take it too seriously and give a really light hearted performance which actually worked well for this movie
Pierce Brosnan. Arguably one of the best Bonds and would widely be considered it if he had better writing. This was a fun and enjoyable film to watch. I wish they gave him a 5th send off movie though. Would’ve been cool to see him one more time before Craig.
He’s my favourite Bond and I love Die Another Day, minus the song!
I thought he was great in Goldeneye, and, it was, simply, truly, all downhill from there.
@@davidhughmiller I was pretty sure Madonna was through, that song totally clinched it for me.
@@matthewdaley746 I feel like you can’t even blame Brosnan. He did his best with what was given.
@@jakegerman7823 I blame everybody, there's a certain magic, with, Bond, which, when lost, can't be recovered, he, simply, lost it, after one film.
What I found rather odd is that the last three Pierce Brosnan James Bond films each came out the exact same year as every Austin Powers movie.
I recognize you from Hack The Movies, lol.
Honestly, I didn't expect this to happen, Jesse. But I can't say i'm complaining!
Honestly, I didn't expect this to happen, Jesse. But I can't say I'm NOT complaining!
I think quantum of solace was the only bond movie Daniel Craig did where he did not quit.
Man I had several laugh out loud moments while watching the video! Good job on that! :D
A bit harsh I think. Bond movies are not Mission Impossible. Bond movies are inherently campy, fun and sexy. Daniel Craig changed that but I liked this movie. Quit being mean.
Maybe we are supposed to read the titles of each actor's last movie in line: On her Majesty's Secret Service diamonds are forever a view to a Kill, license to kill die another day, no time to die.
Die Another Day is was always enjoyable. Yeah, it was a little silly, but it was silly in very Bond-like ways. I can’t say it’s as good as I remember BUT it’s still a terrific entry.
To be fair, brosnan's James Bond has high rewatchability value, I can't say that about Craig's :(
A lot of that is probably to do with the fact that Craig has the on screen charisma of a packet of crisps
Honestly, Pierce Brosnan's performance in Die Another Day is fine for the most part, it's just that the story and main villain are just... absurd. But in a way, that's kind of why I enjoyed it. It's so over-the-top that it's kind of amusing. Both Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike give great performances as the Bond girls of that flick, and the opening action scenes of the film are some of my favorite Brosnan Bond scenes ever. Though I kind of agree with you, I think Will Yun Lee's Colonel Moon prior to becoming Gustav Graves would have been a much better and serious villain than Graves. I also just kind of find it hard to believe that Colonel Moon is Graves, considering how in the beginning, we see Moon as this ruthless, merciless young North Korean colonel that has a pretty interesting scheme, to forcefully bring Korean unification by starting a war... but then he becomes Gustav Graves... who uses a giant laser in space to make a pathway for North Korea to invade South Korea... yeah, I have a LOT of trouble believing that these two are the same person... sure, they have the same motives, but was Moon's plan to create Icarus all along? Was using the gene therapy something he SUDDENLY came up with after faking his death, or was that also part of his grand master scheme? Yeah, I just don't get it.
I am so happy they never went ahead with that Jinx spinoff. Nothing against Barry, but I just could not see the appeal of the character. She was like the worst aspects of Bond, particularly the puns, mixed with a faux-contemporary slang vocabulary that Halle Barry despite all her acting skills could not pull off convincingly. I missed this in the cinema due to various reasons, but being a massive Bond fan went ahead and bought the special edition DVD anyway. What a waste of money. It's a pity, because it did start quite well until Bond gets to Cuba (but, er, remove that Madonna song; even muting the audio is considerably better), after which it begins its slow but steady descent right down to the gutter. This is at the level of Diamonds Are Forever, worse than Man With The Golden Gun, and makes Quantum of Solace look like an action masterpiece.
After marathoning all of these films for the last month or so, I gotta say something unpopular- Yes, DAD is definitely made worse than several others in the series, but I do find it to be a lot more fun and memorable than it gets credit for. It's a James Bond cartoon come to life, and is a lot of fun to watch. It really does have maybe the worst Bond Theme of all time though.
When Roger Moore himself says that the plot as well as the invisible car are silly, you know this James Bond film is in trouble.
I'd rather Brosnan's invisible car than Moore's nonsense.
The car was cool brosnan was awesome this movie is great Moore made live and let die man with the golden gun moonraker the bottom of the barrel for bond films
The introduction of the film including the credits (the failed mission in North Korea with Bond prisoner and tortured in the camp) anticipates the turn of the screw made by the producers later with Craig, showing an double O agent not exactly invincible.
"I guess i live to die another day!"...Still keep the VHS.
Awfully Good Movies is one of the best series on UA-cam. No Ifs, Ands or Buts
Tomorrow Never Dies is my least favorite of the Brosnan movies as I thought the villain's plan was completely ridiculous. The World Is Not Enough is actually my favorite. Sophie Marceau and Judy Dench put in solid performances. If they had actually put more effort into the Christmas Jones character and not cast Denise Richards it could have been better than Goldeneye.
I disagree. TND villain's plot was ahead of its time, and aged like a fine wine, reflecting what happens even today.
TWINE is my personal favorite Bond movie. Yeah Denise is a bad actress but I don't think it was enough to sink the movie.
I’ve just rewatched TND last night and it’s a better watch now than it was then. The plot was ahead of its time and Brosnan is just an awesome bond to watch on screen.
The World is not enough is the very best of bond. It pushes the elements of falling in love and deciding to kill your lover, or join her.
Several reasons why Die Another Day is one of the most hated Bond movies, but the straw that broke the camel's back is the invisible car (Aston Martin Vanquish), which I found entirely realistic because around that time Susumu Tachi was working on active camouflage in Tokyo University. My worst Bond? Moore's last, A View to A Kill, because they stuck to San Francisco and Roger Moore looked old (but now I'm older than he was at the time! Ironic.)
After Die Another Day one cannot see Halle Berry without remember the phrase: "¿Mojito?"
would love to have you come on and do a movie podcast with us someday :D
The opening chase in North Korea was my favorite as a kid.
(6:11) The majority of people who watched Die Another Day in movie theaters.
2:58 - "Ian Flemming would have wanted it that way" -
Flemming literally believed that homosexuals couldn't whistle!
Honestly I really liked Pierce Brosnan as James Bond movies. lol
The White Lotus that transforms into a Submarine is more ridiculous than the invisible car.
15:08 I think you meant to say Gustav Graves, otherwise you’re completely wrong. Miranda was tasked with keeping an eye on James Bond, but she definitely didn’t fall in love with him, although she did boink him and empty-out his pistol magazine.
"Although she did boink him and empty out his pistol magazine".
That's a new euphemism for an orgasm!
@@Totenglocke42 Ahaha, you’re absolutely right lol.
They could have given Brosnan I more movie and said good bye. It was a harsh of EON to kick him out because the director of the movie screwed up the movie.
I laughed out loud when you brought up the infamous scene from Goldfinger!
I consider this the "best of the worst" Bond movies: definitely bottom tier but there's still enough good it's worth a watch: the car chase on the ice is especially great.
Best bond movies are the really bad ones. The cheesier the better
Joblo posting a video at 10am central time while encouraging a drinking game… I like that
THANK YOU!, your version of die another day is so much better than the real movie
So you and I agree...this movie started with a lot of potential. For all the shade it gets for being too silly, the first third or thereabouts is played dead seriously. I mean, can you imagine Roger Moore's Bond being captured by an enemy and tortured for over a year? And Brosnan pulls all this off beautifully...his suffering under torture, his anger and hurt when he finds out his own people no longer trust him. I believe even some of the early posters emphasized this aspect. Then...we get magic gene therapy and invisible cars. I don't think there's ever been a movie that started with such an interesting premise and took such a disappointing left turn.
14:47 "my eyez the goggles do nothing!"
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is like a spiritual successor to Die Another Day.
One does NOT say 'awfully good' and 'Die Another Day' in the same breath. Just plain 'AWFUL' will do fine!
The video game follow up, Everything or Nothing is better
I didnt know about the idea of a Jinx spinoff, and now I want it.
Finished watching Tomorrow Never Dies last night and for the life of me I cannot understand why people dislike it its my fav Bond film much better than Craig in Skyfall he was flat as fuck in that yet everyone sucks him off Pierce was James Bond no argument.
Halle Berry in that orange bikini is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
You left out perhaps the best "reference" line in the movie. After Bond's VR training session, when he appears to have shot M in order to release her from the terrorist, he says to Q, "I think you'll find that he's dead and she has only a flesh wound."
Halle berry was the worst part of the movie for me, but like many others I had a good time watching it and that is the most important thing. First 4 movies are still my favourites.
I always thought that they didn’t take out the diamonds because MI-6 didn’t care to waste the resources, and by the time he got out of prison it may have been too difficult and would cause nerve damage or something. That being said, those are diamonds somebody would have gotten them out nerve damage or not.
I enjoy watching this movie. I can't believe that people who enjoyed watching a boring movie like Skyfall are saying this movie was bad!
Skyfall is a holy grail. This is just a guilty pleasure.
@@goodsaint_001 nah moonraker is a guilty pleasure
BORING?? Oh no...
am I not the only one seeing Die another Day as the Batman and Robin of any Worst Movies
I literally just rewatched this movie like an hour ago, then what a coincidence I opened UA-cam and Joblo just uploaded this lol
This may be the worst James Bond movie and it's so over the top in almost every aspect, but I can say I'd still have a good time everytime I watch it if I'd just switch my brain off for 2 hours.
Gene therapy IS A THING guys.
This movie will become a documentary in 2044 like how tomorrow never dies just became a documentary in the 20s.
Elon musk with a more punishable face that’s one of the best lines from the movie critic I’ve ever heard in my life
Aw, you missed pointing out the prominent scar that magically appears on Gustav Grave's forehead halfway through the movie.
"GYMKATA!" - I caught that!!!! That made my day :-)
The only Bond movie I Saw on theaters. I loved It.
In The Spy Who Loved Me a car turned into a submarine, and in Moonraker Bond goes into space, and has a Star Wars like battle, and Roger Moore said Die Another Day went another went too far.
Lost my shit when dr. Evil says how bout nooo!, ya crazy bastard
Not his last Bond. The awesome video game, Everything or Nothing, featured him, Cleese, and Dench, along with Willem Dafoe as the villain.
Love that reference. I used to play that game with my little brother and whenever you'd do something "Bond-like" it would briefly play the theme song. I would tell my brother (who was old enough to know I was making a stupid joke) that "James Bond makes his own theme music, Da-dun-Da-duuuuunnnnn" (or however you wanna try spelling it)
And it used to exasperate him so much 😆
But he was good about it (that and when he's lose a game, "No YOU don't... wanna f*ck with SHADY...." him:"No" me:"....." us:.... him: *sigh* ... "WHY?!", me: "cuz SHADY, will f*uck,in KILL you" him: "gdammit Chad! $&-##!!")
Having Brosnan singing the theme tune would justify rereleasing this movie.
This movie is, in a way, the biggest BOND movie of them all!
Awesome Christmas Vacation reference.
This film makes Roger Moore Bond films gritty and realistic. Wow it's so bad it's good.
16:17 point is the best 👌 😆
14:55 - missed opportunity to include the burning scene on Mars featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rachel Ticotin. :)
I love dying of the day yes the CGI is horrible but the plot is like a comic book I always thought of it as a comic book movie I love it
Happy Halloween, Everyone.
I always thought that Pierce Brosnan technically didn't "retire" (meaning choosing to leave on his own accord and terms) but that EON Productions in a round about way, fired him. Brosnan I strongly believe, felt that he had at least one more Bond film in him. But EON felt that he was getting too old and costing too much. Plus, as Die Another Day (and a Brosnan's other Bond films besides GoldenEye) proved, they were understandably concerned about the growing law of diminishing returns from a critical standpoint.
Halle berry promised 3 spin offs jinx, kingsman and storm and she get nothing
Great choice! So agree that it really was good. Did you do Hudson Hawk, too?
Timothy Dalton was the best James Bond actor. Prove me wrong.
I wouldn't. He earned, he should keep it, old friend
Yup, he's the best actor...
I don't think colonel Moon character was white wash, it was an attempt of doing a twist villain that was executed horribly.
Everything about this film was executed horribly, so, at least, consistency reigned.
DAD is really not that bad. IT's far from GoldenEye for Brosnan but it's instantly better than most Moore films and if you wanna watch a Bond film but don't wanna have to sit through the emotional gut punch of Casino Royale, Skyfall or OHMSS, DAD happens to be the film to go to. It's very re-watchable. I like it. There's much to enjoy and tbh, somewhere in DAD there lies a great Bond movie. I think ppl are far too harsh with it.
I think Roger Moore has a point with this being a bad movie. The problem is that in Roger Moore's era bond from the very beginning was cheesy and campy. That was the bond from that era from the beginning. Pierce Brosnan started off for the most part as a serious Bond. Although his writing was questionable with the exception of GoldenEye. For the most part the stories were pretty serious and somewhat within the realm of reality. Die another Day goes completely off the rails and I think that's the big problem. The tonal shift is what got Roger Moore. If all the films were like Die another Day In tone then it'd be a different story. So I think the negative reviews of the film are warranted.
each Bond has his own style
More entertaining than Quantum of Solace, that’s for sure.
I absolutely loved DAD
Alcohol doesn’t freeze! (Maybe that was the joke?)
Now I need to go rewatch this. It truly is both incredible and horrible at the same time.
This movie is SO MUCH FUN
From the time when movies were fun. They should try it these days.
12:06 maybe not be a great movie, but I love this fight
Lemmie just pause for a sec & say...Why isn't this channel bigger than it is?! I'm sure I've said it before. But c'mon, the effort put in to the videos & content is surely worthy of more. What's that? Do I want my Martini shaken or stirred?
Do I look like I give a damn?!
James Bond: The golden Morning has no time to die twice royale
Until I saw this it was one of my favourite Bond films.
