Young Pioneer Camps - Dream Vacation For Soviet Children

Even more than 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, young pioneer camps remain one of the symbols of a state that no longer exists. What is a pioneer camp? It is a children's recreational and educational institution designed for temporary stay there of pioneers and schoolchildren aged 7 to 16.The unique network of pioneer camps, which covered the whole country from Moscow to the outskirts, was perhaps the main achievement of Soviet social policy. Nowhere else in the world was organized recreation for children so accessible or so widespread. The first camps appeared immediately after the establishment of the pioneer organization in May 1922. The real heyday of pioneer camps came in the 1960s and 1980s. In 1973, 40,000 pioneer camps hosted 9.3 million children on vacation In 1987, 18.1 million children, or 45.4% of schoolchildren in the USSR. Today lets talk about how these centers were organized and why young soviet children loved them so much.
