(7/15/24) Strong severe thunderstorm (possibly derecho) with 70-75 MPH winds w/sirens!

On the evening of July 15th, we got hit by a strong severe thunderstorm that I think had atleast 70 MPH winds at times. I believe this storm may have been a derecho. Most of the wind was sustained for a unusually long period of time at mainly 60-70 MPH I believe. We also got a lot of heavy rain too. We didn’t end up getting any damage thankfully. This storm produced a 105 MPH wind gust in northern Illinois. This same storm also produced tornadoes in Chicago too I believe. This was definitely one of my most interesting storms I’ve filmed this season so far. We also didn’t lose any power either despite the strong winds. Recorded July 15, 2024.

Since I was a little boy age ten yrs old I have had a passion for the weather.
It started when I was transfixed to a nighttime storm looking out my bedroom window
Back in 1980 / 81.
I can remember this storm like it was yesterday , it was a violent thunderstorm which scared the life out of me but I still couldn’t stop watching it nonetheless.
This particular storm I saw pinky red lightning also blue, the thunder was incredibly loud in which the storm lasted well over an hour.

I have to say, I have never been to America and just wanted to comment on your housing estate which looks beautiful and well kept 😊
Im in southeastern ma, the marine layer destroys all severe storms that come toward me to pretty much any time we have a risk of severe weather it ends up being a rumble of thunder and light rain 😭😭 and the storm prediction center always draws that line on I-95. Same goes during the winter, North of 95 12-18 inches but I-95 gets the rain line and we get like an inch that's get washed away. Absolutely do not recommend southeastern ma for storm lovers, wish i could move 😭
If you believe in almighty God , none can harm you at all. No storm is such powerful as God is. So ,you need not worry.

As someone also with ADHD (and maybe also autism), I can absolutely empathize with your emotions. I just hope you didn't have prolonged overstimulation with this. And that you're okay now.

Keep it up, I can see your passion and i love watching storms approaching. Were i live in Australia (Melbourne) we don't get much of this. Queensland, Australia will have the similar storm pattern as the USA.

When I was a little girl, I was afraid of thunderstorms. Tdy I love them. I sit in my window & film them, down pours all of it. I love the sound of the rain hitting the pavement, the rustling of the leaves on the trees. This yr we barely got any tstorms😢, and it's been a hot & humid summer. This sucks. NYC needs a good storm b4 summer's end. Washes everything clean.😅
Like me, when I was little girl scared of thunderstorms, now love them! I live in Sydney so he never get Tornadoes but we sometimes get very severe thunderstorms during the summer time.

The 2020 Iowa derecho had winds up to 140 MPH. That's Category 4 on the Saffer Simpson Scale
The "green derecho" of SE Michigan July 16 1980 that hit at 730 they believe had 150-160 mph winds flipped railroad cars, caused freighter to run aground on the Detroit River
Id say those winds were more like 30 to 40....45 possibly (as someone who's been in countless hurricanes. But pretty cool storm and excellent video. Cheers from Aruba 🇦🇼
Thanks! I’m pretty sure this was atleast near 70 MPH since there was a 64 MPH gust recorded in my town from this storm. We get storms like this atleast once every season but this wasn’t nearly as bad as other storms I’ve gotten.
@tankvet08 oh, true...we usually just have trade winds and big ass surf...and it's warm all year...September an March are the warmest months and while June is slightly cooler 85 and 95 (because little rain) at the worst during the dry season which is winter time. We got about a day or so to prep for Beryl (currently staying with some fam in Dominica) but wasn't that bad about 45 knt winds and just a lot of rain

I have to tell you that you did a Fantastic Job Taking This Video. No Matter what other people were possibly saying and if was nasty just disregard those messages. I actually have to tell.you that back in March and I live in Florida and on March 3'rd me and my family were coming home from Costco doing some Shopping and as soon as we got home the Skies Explodrd and we had actually sort of a Hail Storm over our Families House along With Very High Winds and Torrential Downpours and Lightning. I took Pictures and Now It won't let me show every picture but I can at least send you one. Also, I'm very glad you all have Power are doing really well.
Man strong storms and more has changed my ideas of moving into homes and building one everything looks good but now there is that thought will it be able to withstand natural disasters and will builders who build look for stronger materials this storm look so violent and I Immediately said I hope everyone okay watching someone lose their home basically changes hey i want a home it's a lot more to think about esp if you in a area with prone natural disasters

I think those winds might be up to 55 mph, There were no fallen trees. Which means it’s under 55 mph, the trees might be strong or something, but if the winds were 5 more then some of the smaller trees would’ve fell.

I have loved severe thunderstorms since I was a kid. Yes, it's scary, but feels like a musical to me. I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and it is very rare to have a severe thunderstorm here. We get earthquakes here-less exciting than a severe thunderstorm.
Derechos are very dangerous storms, the one that hit Iowa in 2020 had winds of 140 miles per hour, that's hurricane force.
Easily. That storm knocked our power out for almost 2 days. It was even worse up in Cedar Rapids.
I don't mind hearing those sirens....but when you hear them during the night...that's scarey...my anxiety is thru the roof.....about a few yrs ago...we had a deracho come thru..but it was at night...the winds were from the east north east...at 90mph...I live in a trailer home...my cup of water on the counter was vibrating....I bout lost my mind..lol

I don't remember when when the the winds did start before I just did my laundry downstairs in my building got up there got up in my apartment I looked out the window was lightning and then before I knew it it was around 9:00 in the evening and Sirens went off in North Aurora Illinois and I took cover stayed away from Windows went downstairs in the theater and then there was no tornado but it was over our building USA ef1 it landed somewhere I don't remember but I hope everyone is safe and no one was injured❤❤❤❤❤

The same storm went through my area knocking out power for 2 days. Tornado watch and warnings and confirmed EF1 tornado 15 mins from us.

I live in south Omaha and when that storm was over i couldn't believe that from Papillion to Benson there were trees blown down and uprooted. This has been a really bad year where we've had a couple of storms where it hailed the size of baseballs and in some plases back in April there were multiple tornadoes on the ground at the same time. I'm not even going to talk about how windy it can get here in the winter. Blizzard conditions can suck.

I ended up sounding mine for it. I live in the country and the sirens in Ottumwa are kinda hard to hear from where I'm at.

I've never ever heard sirens in NC. I think it would scare us if we heard it for the first time.

I have mild autism i use to be very afraid of tornadoes and thunderstorms i'd also have a panic attack everytime statewide tornado drills took place when i was a younger now i outgrew my fear of tornadoes and thunderstorms but i still get a little nervous whenever a tornado watch or warning is issued

It hit Chicago during the night while I was at work was crazy strong winds for about an hour two nights in a row luckily just small debris like branches and small limbs were the result
fun fact: when you translate derecho it means right, or straight. they used this word to sort of describe the weather phenomenon with straight-line winds up to 110 mph.

Great video, but winds appeared in the 40-50 mph range. 75, you'd be seeing some of those trees falling or dropping branches and you probably would have lost your lights.

I live in eastern Pennsylvania and, last year, we had a tornado pass right behind our house. It caused a massive tree to topple and it crashed right into our living room and caused significant damage. Luckily, me and my parents were in our native country of Sweden visiting so nobody was home. It took months to rebuild but all is well now. We are dealing with our development to have more trees in our backyard cut down because we sure as heck don’t want THAT to happen again. Crazy stuff. Luckily, the twister was only an EF1 but the damage was done. Also, our house was the ONLY house in the neighborhood that was hit. Unbelievable! I hope y’all are OK.
Thanks! It was a derecho but it wasn’t nearly as bad in my area. There was a 64 MPH gust here but I think some of the wind did get around 70 MPH. This storm got a lot worse as it got into Illinois.

Experienced those winds with a tropical storm in 2022, and these winds look similar. Still a good storm though!
Thanks! I think some of the winds were likely atleast around 70 MPH. There was a 64 MPH gust recorded in my town from this storm. Other parts of my county saw 70 MPH winds. By the time it got into Illinois it produced 100 MPH winds and several tornadoes.

Yeah my state has been extremely active for severe weather this season especially this spring. There was an EF4 tornado in Greenfield. May is when my tornado peak happens but we can still get storms like this in the summer. It was actually fairly quiet for severe weather this June here.

I live in Iowa and hurricanes can’t hit here at all. Remnants of them can still hit here and even produce tornadoes though.

They have warnings for derechos now?
No. There are only Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued for storms like this, but they’re classified as a derecho if winds are strong enough and it extends hundreds of miles.

Are you interested in California weather? Have you ever heard of Santa Ana/Mono/Diablo/Sundowner winds, windstorms? These are dry, low-humidity, clear-air windstorms where the air could get quite warm, sometimes hot. The usual season is from September to April, yet during December/January, they can get a bit of a chill about them. Bad wildfires occur in these, though the wind is usually NOT the direct cause of fires, save for UNHARDENED power lines. They blow from land to the ocean. In the mountains, they can "eat" away as much as a yard's depth of snow, maybe more, in the course of about two days, through direct evaporation and dispersal of the water molecules, to nothing, from the low humidity. They have a maximum speed of about 150MPH, depending upon localized pressure gradients and geography. Milder events (25MPH w/gusts to 50MPH) usually rise up around sundown, then diminish, or go relatively quiet by the next mid-afternoon. But, during more severe events, they've been known to last a WHOLE week, with very little diminution. Big "dusters" in the deserts. These will cause tree/forest destruction, the destruction of structures, and, the flipping/rolling of high-profile vehicles & trains. It's been determined that due to the radical ionization of the air, that particularly susceptible people can get some nasty mental and emotional problems. Dashiell Hammet, Joan Didion, Raymond Chandler, James Elroy, they all have written about people going "crazy" during these windstorms and committing heinous crimes, where they "wouldn't", otherwise.
And during the Summers all along North America's Pacific shoreline, gales often can blow, conducting in the fogs, that may transform into montane thunderstorms, throughout the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, and the Canadian/Alaskan Rockies.
