Building A OO Gauge Model Railway: How To Series - Creating Hills With Plaster Bandage

- One of the major features of this layout will be undulating terrain with the railway cutting through it. In this short demo I show you how I make use of plaster bandage to produce a small hill for the layout. I hope you find it useful.

A timely video on my part them Paul. Lol. I’m putting off the changeover from solenoids to cobalts myself, partly because I still only have the one bought but also it’s not exciting me enough to get on with it. Some day soon...maybe. Paul
Yes, Im molding a hillside at the moment and its taking some doing, Im intending to finish off with plaster bandage, hopefully it will hold everything together.
Cobalts are great and I'd certainly recommend them, the cost is the only issue. I personally dont have a problem with solenoids, kinda like them and the clonk they make especially when running sound locos, cant always tell a cobalts changed with a 37 thrashing away up the helix.
I need to sort my wiring out soon cobalts dont like loose connections...

Hey MR, thank you. I’m itching to get to the greenery but I still need to complete some other work before that starts. Interesting that you mention roads, I’ve had the first dabble in that with the road in the corner. I’m still not convinced I’ve got what I want but I’ll call it a work in progress. I had thought of doing a video on it also so watch this space. Paul
Amazing how much the news paper packed down under the bandage. I though you would end up with a mini mountain range at the start !

Thanks Gary, as the plaster hardens it helps hold the bundles of paper down. Use too little it will just dip in to the card cells. Paul

Hi Paul. Really great video that plaster bandage is messy I remember doing a modelling project with my eldest son when he was about 12yrs old and it was messy then so it 34 years ago "wow" . So I have all this to come when I start on the scenic, but first I must get a cam corder to start doing video's, anyway your layout is really starting to take shape and looks great. Hi George, thank you for taking the time to watch. Messy it certainly is but the results are very rewarding. All my videos have been shot on my iPhone and then edited with the iMovie app. I’m still learning what can be done on it but it’s very intuitive and provides plenty of options for colour tones, overlaying music, cutting and audio options. Well worth a look if you are an Apple user although I’m sure similar products are available for Android devices. I’ll look forward to catching your videos when they appear. Paul
I enjoyed your video. I have adopted a similar method where I cut up old bed sheets into manageable strips then dip them in a plaster of paris solution and then lay them as you have done on the crunched up newspaper. I find this method eliminates any plaster dust., and it also works out much cheaper. Cheers Greg
