They really don’t get why work culture has turned into comfort culture?? Why work twice as hard as the next guy, create 3x the value, and only be paid 5-10% more. Then you watch the senior and executive positions be given to a friend or diversity hire rather than the most qualified. But you still want me to lose family time, take on stress, and bust my ass for a raise that doesn’t even cover inflation and an employee of the month badge? Really!? Makes more sense to be the guy doing bare minimum for 40 hrs from home, side gig the saved commute times, and spend time with the family everyday. If employers rewarded value production accordingly, workers (the market) would come to cash those checks.

@@Zickafoose2024 ...Yes. And food is where much of the inflation is occurring...hmm...maybe the two are connected. Just maybe, if farmers can't sell crop at a market rate, but are still effected by market pricing for production, they produce less crop. Which means the supply of that crop in the super market contracts, which in turn causes an increase in the price of that good. Which inceases the cost of farming, which further disincentivizes the production of more crops, which further shrinks supply, which further increases food inflation. It is almost as if the price controls that already exists are the source of the food inflation that is already happening, and if not managed can causes a negative feed back loop. But never-mind I am sure more price controls will solve the problem.

  • @jellojiei6061
    @jellojiei6061 26 днів тому +63

One of the key reasons people, prefer working from home, is that you don’t get paid, when you are driving, which does not sound like a lot, but assuming it’s that if you spend 45 minutes, getting ready for work, driving their and back that adds up 7 and half hours a week.
Which is almost a whole days worth of wages, that is not even factoring in transportation costs, like Gas, insurance, and the damage driving does to your car.
So in theory Working from home saves you a lot of money, and lets you be more productive since you have a lot more time.

@@robbycook4298 there are multiple perspectives, I am explaining one reason why they are willing to take a pay cut in exchange for this.
If you care about maximizing your income in the short term since you don’t see a relationship with this company and you think it’s going to fail, or don’t care about the future then most people would be willing to take a five or ten percent pay cut, in exchange for 20 percent less labour time, which they could spend elsewhere. As they said in this podcast show me the incentives and I will show you the outcome.
Notice how I did not mention office space costs, or the benefits companies could in theory get from having people work from home, because I was doing a simple analysis on why people, don’t want to return to work. how productive they are is IRELEVENT IN THIS CASE since they don’t care.

@@CM-zl2jw me thinks you missed the point of what I am saying, not everyone cares about the future, and about the companies success, this was a basic Analysis based on what I have heard from people.
Currently a lot of companies are failing to get people back to work I am explaining why they don’t want to go back. A lot of skilled people do want to go back to the officer yes but there are also a lot of skilled workers who refuse to go back to the office, and firing let’s say a quarter of your work force is off the table if you have any sense.
I am not saying they are more productive at home, I am not saying they are more productive at the office, I am saying they don’t want to go to the office and many of them know the things that were talked about in the pod and simply don’t care.
Firing everyone who stays online is also moronic because of the variance of skill level I have a friend who ran a start up, and in their company was a guy who refused to go back into the office, and the company despite forcing everyone back, did not punish him once, because he so good at his job not only was he the most productive in his department but he had better results than the next second to fifth people combined, now is this inductive of the average online worker no but the point is when one fourth or more of your highly skilled work force says I am not coming back to the office full time and are willing to not get promoted then you as a company are going to have to find a way around it.
One thing I was mentioning here was maybe offering pay increases to the people that come into the office since they are more productive it won’t motivate most of them, but it might get a few.
Another thing me and some friends were talking about, was VR this way you can build a headquarters that has a lot of the benefits, of working in the office with all the benefits of working at home, I know Nvidia spent a huge amount of money on their headquarters to have people run into each other I was honestly surprised they did not bring up Nvidia, when talking about office spaces but maybe it’s design is not that major compared to the other companies.

I dont understand these comments on working remote. Chamath in a previous episode said his company is remote and doesnt see why he would go back only to increase Opex, lives in Italy for the summer, and does a poscast via zoom every week.
They talk about how AI is similar to industrial revolution and where people were able to use technology to create efficiency instead of horse and carriage. How people are afraid of AI because they can't yet conceptualize how much value it will bring with new jobs, reduction in cost, etc.
But, ironically, these guys can't see the same thing with remote work. The upside in efficiency, reduction in useless meetings, being able to work with team memebers in different time zones, reduction in living expenses, etc.
I built my first start-up and exited it fully remote. Don't demonizie remote work and make it seem, "yeah if you want to break even, or just be a freelancer then it's fine" But, if you want to make it big go to the office. Atlassian is also a great example....

Now, if you work from home, there are no transportation costs, no starbucks, no expensive lunch at the office, no after work beer and most importantly you can live far away from the city where home prices are 1/4th of what they are where your work is in the city.
So even though 60k might not seem like much it's actually a lot if you then invest most of that capital each year into NSDQ100 or any other high performing index. If you start working in your mid 20's and keep at it you'll be retired in your mid 40's as a multi millionaire.

When we need to collaborate one to one, we call each other on teams. We never meet in person in a meeting room. We only see each other in passing. The difference now is that we waste almost 3 hours a day commuting back and forth from the office, and when we get home, we are so frazzled we don't want to do anything.
When I worked remote, I averaged 55 hours a week. Now, it's 38-40 hours a week. When I was remote, I was the most productive, most alert, most engaged, and most healthy I have ever been in my career. Now, I'm none of those things.
What these 4 guys don't understand, is that most places of work don't have nice restaurants, or cafes, or places to get your haircut, or on-site bars to have a drink at 5 pm, or a gym, or anything special. Most places are a sea of cubicles and meeting rooms and shitty break rooms with shitty coffee and a coke and candy machine if they are lucky.

As an employee, why should one work more than 40 hours when one is paid for only 40 hours? One can be ambitious and plan to spend the rest of their time on other side hustles. Employers can fire you in a beat without thinking. So, I do not agree with the notion that if folks opt for work-life balance, they lack ambition. It’s simply that they’ve realized the nature of companies. A similar argument can be made for working from home (WFH). By WFH, I save 2-3 hours in traffic and avoid the frustration that comes with it. Also, in California, housing is very expensive. Isn’t it better to WFH from a place where housing is cheaper and schools are better? My advice to companies that want employees to work from the office: Provide good/affordable housing with good schools near the office to have a level playing choice. Also this podcast was done remotely and not in person from an office :) and proves wfh is not only possible but more convenient hence more productive.

Working for a FAANG company during Covid with everyone remote, I saw amazing levels of productivity that had never been seen before. I am not sure why we were not hearing then of all that was being lost. Covid proved that the factory worker concept of folks coming in while they could be supervised in person is history. If the metric is productivity, presence in person or remote does not matter.

I work for a large company that has 5 US offices. Everyone I work with is in different offices, none are in mine. The company has said, everyone needs to come in 3 days per week, but given that I am going to an office to work remote with a distributed team, it feels like there is no value add for me to be in. There's a lot of these kind of nuances at play around the remote work question. I don't think its as simple as coming in is better.

@pindapy1596 - Yeah I agree, but also companies are large and beaurocratic and have a lot of areas to focus on, of which office space seems pretty low on the list. There is a bit of a transition period right now where people were hired in different locations. From the company perspective, everyone should be at least some of the time in office to collaborate. From employee perspective, they are being asked to sit in an office and “collaborate” with people via zoom. The end result is the same as if that collaboration happened from a home office. I can see why both sides feel the way they feel but it doesn’t change there is a pointlessness to this particular situation in reality.

As an avid Remote Worker, there are plenty of companies who have always been remote-first that create great service for their clients and humanity.
The team at 37 Signals have proven that you can win in a remote-first environment and they're not unique.
There are 100,000s remote workers who are sales, service and territory managers in every industry throughout the country and you'd never know it because they were "remote" before it was cool.
The problem with execs who are demanding that staff come back to the office is that they've never really thought through how they could be a remote-first organization. And that's most of these execs value "face time" as much or more than outcome because it feeds their ego and gets them to the next run on the ladder.
It's the same problem with VC-fueled companies who continue to lose money every quarter but are measured by their increasing headcount.

@@MrJoel9679What Ukraine has demonstrated is that a Navy can't survive in enclosed waters. Unless they have unlimited hundreds of millions of dollars of defensive weapons. And even then... The Houthis have learned the lesson: trading cheap weapons for expensive weapons. Driving up costs in transit time and defense. I have no idea whether the Ukrainians could blow up the pipeline. And if it's as easy as claimed, Ukraine should have been suspect number one from the get-go. What I do know is that the US Navy can't build ships at cost, on time.
What's great about this podcast is the way they analyze business problems. Here's an example problem for them.
      (Details approproximate from memory. )
The Navy decided to buy (or maybe license) a French ship design. Originally they intended to use something like 90% French, 10% American mods. By the end it was almost reversed. Every entity wanted their say. As if Jobs kept changing the original Mac so everyone got to sign their name inside. It was a nightmare. Delivery delayed, costs soared and IIRC they killed the program after delivery of a couple ships. Or at least kept reducing their orders which hurt the contractors. (In defense of my memory, this has happened so many times in my lifetime that I may be conflating some of the details. But it's still happening now. I flew off the Nimitz in the late 70s early 80s, the first of its class. Nimitz class carriers are nearing their retirement date. With a war with China a possibility, the Navy is having problems replacing them.)
I can't imagine these guys would invest in a company that ran its business this way. Disruption is inevitable. Planning for future war is virtually impossible. But some do it better than others.

I personally think the hybrid model is the best because it provides flexibility for life while also providing opportunity to collaborate like you said.
