Oy Vey! Is a human right
YES
you must commit to the bit. it's technically an act of media preservation.
Why not? Although now I'm wondering for these "Good game, bad theme" games, how would you re-theme them?
This seems comically offensive, and then you realize this was 100% made by people making fun of their own parents.
You can tell on account it hasn't been censored and erased from history
@@nuclearicebreaker What? Are you saying that everything that has ever offended anyone has been censored and erased from history?
@@whereammy yes
PLEASE bring this to Tabletop simulator
I can't wait to look insane when I'll ask my friends to play this game
I honestly thought of the idea for porting it to tabletop simulator before it was bought up, so please listen to us
I just want SOMEONE to bring this into the TTS workshop.
I support this motion
I literally came to comment this 😂
fr this game looks pretty fun
Even with context, the idea of winning by sending your kids to the hospital is wild
Being a Mother is the hardest job there is
Without context, the speedrun strat would sound like having children born at a hospital (which most are anyway)
Over here you're more likely giving birth at your own home instead, with the, uh, "birth doctor" coming over to your house to supervise instead of you coming to the hospital.
@@sponge1234ify In which countries is that a thing? In the US most people are born in hospitals, and I think depending on the area that has been the case for maybe 80-100 years
@@sponge1234ifythe English word is obstetrician! or midwife for a slightly different meaning. the more you know 💫
Let's be real, there's no way this game *wasn't* made by a Jewish person with how many references there are on it.
That or a friend of one.
It fucking BETTER be. Even then, I would say perpetuating stereotypes can still be harmful, but whatever. If not...
I know porting these crusty ass board games to Tabletop Simulator is a lot of work but I also think it's probably the best way we have atm to preserve them for posterity. future generations need to know this kind of nonsense exists
It might be a bit easier than gay monopoly since he actually has a copy of it this time
you'd probably get banned for it

@@bigjohnsbreakfastlog5819 That thibg would need a few Excel Spreadsheets companion.
@@r3ked272 I've seen much crazier shit on that workshop page, this game should be fine.
As a current med student, can confirm. Got held back a year cause I keep rolling 3's.

I'm Jewish and this doesn't strike me as anti-Semitic at all. The stereotypes are all in lighthearted good fun- honestly, I would guess it was made by a Jewish person
Yeah this was 100% made by a Jew lol, just the type of good ol Ashkenazi humor I love
It was probably someone who dropped out of med school to become a game designer and got disinherited by his mother.
It is lighthearted, my dad is a jew and this seems like the types of jokes he would make.

This won't get anywhere on a bad theming platform because it's clearly made by and for Jewish people, just like Gay Monopoly. It's actually quite charming
I'm sure Gay Monopoly wasn't made for or even by anyone

As a Jewish person, I gotta applaud your pronunciation... with the exception of Channukah, which is pronounced with a silent C. Also yes, Jewish Penicillin is absolutely a term for chicken soup.
Wait, how did I not know it’s spelled with a c.
@@NickyClassicBackArchives Because both with and without the C are accepted variants in English.
I've also heard it used for matzo ball soup
Also, isn't it pronounced nah-khes?
I'm surprised he mispronounced it cuz to me it's one of those Hebrew words that is very much in the mainstream, like children's programmes and cartoons, etc.
I checked aaand... it's an alternative spelling. Hm, makes sense why it looked a bit weird to me.
The fact that the success on your daughters relies on the success of the opponent's sons so the optimal strategies is for your daugthers to stalk the opponent's sons and for your sons to avoid the opponent's daughters is simply hilarious. Just for that I would play this.
Families and marriages being part of the gameplay makes me think that a medieval era retheme, where princes and princesses from 4 families head to conquer a city in the center first, could work well. Gameplay sounds really fun.
actually genius, probably would make it a good game with a normal theme and sell more units
I love everyone making rethemes of wack-crap games so much, makes me think about what would happen if they made it to shelves
LMAO I could see such a medieval era retheme be a parody of medieval UK stereotypes & it'd be like Monty Python: Ridiculous & hilarious.
@@ExtremeWreck The family names can all be shit like Aringale, Brightsmuth, Hogsmear, and Dadilroth
I was trying to think of a way to re-theme the game, and this sounds like a perfect option.
The mahjong thing is so accurate. My bubbe loved that game and I didn’t realize it was this widespread among jews
It’s because the Jews and the Chinese go way back in cities like London and New York. They were for a long time the only big non-Christian communities, so they found common ground. It’s the same reason why a lot of Jews eat Chinese food on Christmas
and bubbes and their nokia sudoku LOL
My bubbe was more of a Bridge gal but my aunt? Mahjong master
Naches card proposal: one pawn becomes immune to marriage
i think the board game could really use the publicity that comes from a tie-in to the hit 2009 movie "oy vey! my son is gay!"
#SigmaGrindstein
And if two players hold that card at a time they can take advantage of the marriage mechanic but between pawns.
@@saintsea-hat7891flip a coin to see which pawn is the “doctor” in their relationship
@@saintsea-hat7891 I like the concept. But how do you put them on the board togheter though? The current pawns don't look very stackable
I certainly did not expect Oy Vey to be a better version of Sorry.
Honestly, I'm kindof impressed - this feels like a game that was made without any malice behind it (mainly due to the fact that I can't see someone getting so many references to jewish culture present in a game if they didn't have at least some level of exposure to it, I haven't even heard of half the terms the game uses). Aged poorly? Oh, for sure. A dubious choice of theming from the very start? Yeah, can't pretend it isn't. But I don't come away from this feeling icked out, so credit where it's due, Oy Vey! you get the "better than I was expecting" sticker.
It's very, very likely this game was made by Jewish people. Their humor can be pretty self-deprecating.
@@gotgunpowder LMAO yeah I have heard of them being like that. I mean, I DO remember one Jewish organization using a bunch of dollar bills as a mascot.
Yeah, I can totally see myself playing and loving this with some of my friends. Especially for one of them who we nicknamed “Yiddishe Momme” and would absolutely adore it.
lmao yeah me and a jewish friend watched this (and i know a fair bit about jewish culture for a gentile) and she was like “this game was 100% made by jewish people” when the naches and tsouris cards came on screen
I love getting offended on the behalf of other races and not my own
As a child of two generations of Jewish doctors I love this for the concept alone.
hey, jew here, I've been searching for this game ever since you first mentioned it and it has actually become a big part of my life in a funny way. Please port it to TTS it would really fill my heart with joy. Thank you so much and thank you to the viewer who got their hands on it. (wish it was me)
I’d definitely play this game even though I’m clearly not the target demographic for it (WASP in case you were wondering) since it seems absolutely fun between friends at parties. 😂

I do wonder if there could be some backstories for each of the families that hit off at least the 4 most typical American Jew family caricatures.

This HAD to be made FOR Jewish people. The in-jokes and terms are so advanced that nobody else would even understand them. Like I'm a Christian, and I've watched every episode of The Chosen so far, and I still had to look up what some of these things are.
So in that case, if Jewish people made it and think that it's funny, then I guess it's pretty cool! It's good to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes.
If the maker of this game was a gentile I would be shocked, this is whole game is so deeply Jewish
This was made for racers. I can image playing it with racer friends and just laughing our heads off over all the racing and stereotypes. I bet the Jews are seething over this one right now XD

This reminds me of an anecdote Asimov once told about some international conference he attended once. He was drinking at the wet bar with a guy who came all the way there from India who was complaining about his mother trying to control his future and Asimov jokingly asked if his mother was Jewish. Without missing a beat, the Indian man simply said, in the most resigned, beaten down tone imaginable, "Sahib, *all* mothers are Jewish."
As a Jewish person, we do call chicken soup Jewish Penicillin
What- why- HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? There must be some kind of story or explanation, and I want details.
@@justsomeguy5628 I imagine the tradition of eating chicken soup when you're sick came from the Jews.
@@justsomeguy5628 I think it’s pretty simple-Penicillin is a common antibiotic for treating disease, and chicken soup has good immune-boosting properties and is a dish that originated in Jew-heavy areas in East Europe and followed them as they spread out across the continent.
Hi there, Great video! Glad to see Oy Vey properly documented. You did an absolutely wonderful job explaining the mechanics.
Glad to help with finding it! Have a great day :D
You're a real one for your contribution and thus allowing this video to happen!
The legend, couldn't have done it without you!
You did great my guy!

Hello I'm a son of a Jewish mother, I am shocked and appalled that there isn't an option to lawyer up to get half points.
(Also marrying a mizrahi should land you in poverty)
Oof 💀
As a Jew this feels like something a Jew made
This was 100% made by the sons or daughters of a Jewish mother
Completely agree. This sounds exactly like something my friends and I would have make up while hanging around the JCC, someone just put the effort into making it an actual, buyable thing.
Oh 100%, this was definitely made by one of our own 😂
Never thought i'd hear the phrase "the arranged marriage meta"
This video has greatly helped me avoid being accidently insensitive to my Jewish friends: after explaining the nuances of Oy Vey in great detail to them, and then having to explain to them what Oy Vey is, I now no longer have any Jewish friends.
I want to play Oy Vey! on Tabletop Sim with my friends so bad... I just know we're all destined to be great Jewish mothers
So looking at the board and mechanics, Oy Vey's a more complicated Parcheesi with Chutes and Ladders' spaces and Monopoly's card mechanics tossed in, with a sprinkle of Sorry! on top for some extra spice. I like it. Honestly, if this was remade with a better theme with better art to match, I could see it being a hit today. And yes, please bring this to TTS.
I saw someone suggest a medieval retheme where you’re attempting to conquer a city-state in the middle of four kingdoms, which I could def see working well
Don't forget a dash of The Game of Life, except everyone ends up doctors or married to one
@@Lorekeeper_GGuy Yeah, I could see it: the pawns could be something like a royal caravan with the flavor text of having money or a kingdom's representative that's meant to be put in as governor of the city-state, and the flat pieces would be troops sent from the kingdoms without a figurehead. Something along those lines, anyways.
@@DurradonXylles Honestly they could even keep the boys-girls theme, as marring your daughters into other families was a big part of late-medieval/early-modern royalty/aristocracy power-play politics. The "Liberated Woman" card could be turned into a "Queen Regnant" or something card. So with the exception of that card, only your Princes can legally hold on-paper power in the city, but in actuality your Princesses caries as much influence for your House. Since these types of marriages were often political and arranged this also would justify the forced nature of the marriage mechanic.
ngl, i knew this was going to be a banger of a game when you started to mention strategies. Im really curious if snyone can get in contact with the original creator and just ask, "why?!". The theme honestly feels like someone that lived in a Hasidic community but wasnt born into it.
I didn't live in or near a Ha-si- dic (trying to prevent blue link) community n my grandmother still tried to hook me up with a Dr (or dentist). I'd guess they're from urban NE USA, but currently residing in Florida 😂
This was probably unintentional, but this was a fitting video topic for Rosh Hashanah!
שנה טובה!
The word tsuris is a Yiddish word that means "trouble" or "distress" and comes from the Hebrew word ṣārāh, which means "troubles"
The Yiddish word naches comes from the verb nach, which means "to rest" or "to put down". The word's original meaning is "calm," "tranquility," or "peace".
In modern usage, naches is a term that refers to a feeling of pride or joy in the accomplishments of others, especially children. It can also refer to the satisfaction of helping someone else or the joy of living in a country that promotes freedom of expression.
Kam thank you so much for this 🙏 my family was recently kidnapped and the kidnapper won't let them go unless I win a game of Oy Vey! Thanks so much for the hints and tips
Always happy to help, best of luck on the rescue!
You should offer to play with Hamas. Maybe they will release the hostages if you win a game of Oy Vey.
Kam is gonna have a physical copy of every controversial board game eventually.
He’s collecting them to harness their power like infinity stones.
I wonder where he hides them when he brings people to his home

Finally, a board game about avoiding women
but aren't you playing as the mother tho?
@@andreibaciu7518 you are, and thus there still is a gap in the market of board games about avoiding women
I don’t think this falls into capital punishment tier theming because it clearly was made by Jews taking the piss of their own culture. Definitely cringe but I don’t think it’s supposed to be offensive like capital punishment
1:50 I like how you immediately married the daughter with her own brother.
I have encountered this game not once but twice in my life. I'm from South Boston but in summer we'd go to my aunts house in the burbs. Oh we're all Irish catholic not Jewish, I was an altar boy. I didnt know what "Jewish" meant.
My aunt had millions of games including this.(I THINK, this might be a false memory)I think I played with my girl cousins but I don't remember specifically
But years later, like 92 I was at a rave somewhere near long Island city and we had driven down. We were looking for our car at like 7am all whacked out on e and crystal and It must have been garbage day and someone had done a clean out of their house and there were like a 1000 board games. Unbelievable stuff! So we got all excited and loaded up the car that we were in with all these games and we ended up playing the Jewish mother game at an after party, it was crazy, People were getting really into it.
I was the Jewish mother and for some reason I never changed back. My granddaughter Rachel just had her bat mitzvah
Fascinating that this was found and isn't too repugnant to put on UA-cam. That being said, what of "Mangia!", the game that is- as far as I can tell- made by the same guy but is about being an italian mother getting her family to eat? Could that be the Public Assistance to Oy Vey's Capital Punishment? The mystery eats me alive.
The creator's last name is apparently Italian, for what it's worth, as well.
Mangia for the Atari 2600 has a similar concept(except in the 2600 game, you're a kid eating spaghetti who must avoid eating too much) & same name lol.
I absolutely love the paper on the wall changing to different versions of the box art.
Thank you, this video has saved my marriage. From ever happening.
13:54 On the plus side, the USPS won't leave your package outside, by the door in the rain.
Despite a lot of the stereotypes in this board game, I can confirm I have heard my New York Jewish friend refer to chicken soup as "Jewish penicillin" at least twice.
It's not the same as regular chicken soup, there's a recipe change that involves matzo balls.
In the UK at least it's not racist and more an endearing term you'll see on menus or food delivery apps.
Idk bro, every Jew I've ever met would absolutely love to play this game😂
I need this guy to put it online 😂
I really hope you end up making the tabletop version, if only for the sake of preservation. I don't think I could ever convince my friends to play, but it's always cool to see what these lost games look like.
Im gonna be honest, Oy Vey feels like its perfectly made for the kind of friendgroup that has some dark humor and can causally make some edgy jokes between each other while taking nothing serious at all. Like you could easily add some drinking rules to it where everytime you have to move back you have to say "oy vey" and drink.
Now I MUST bring Oy Vey to the next game night
@@ucantstoptheflopp4387on god bro
Did not think oy vey would be a more complicated version of ludo but I'm kinda living for it.
It's Ludo with a narrative... _hmmm..._
Please add this to Tabletop Simulator! Ever since I heard about Gay Monopoly, I desperately wanted to play it out of curiosity and now you've made it a reality.

You know, there's absolutely nothing stopping someone from changing the theme. Do that, and you might just have a sleeper hit on your hands here.
This would do numbers as a medieval themed game
I would put my vote down as a very weird 2000s teen comedy.

Finally, lesbian representation
The tsouris cards seem to have fair and appropriate punishments. Apparently having your yarmulke too tight is worse than your mom losing all of your med school money
And getting hit by an ICBM is only the third worst possibility.
Oh, I think I get it now. This was rap rat's mother, hence why he turned out that way. Also confirming that rap rat is jewish.
out of a desire for a combination of preservation and allowing people that otherwise wouldn't to get to experience a game, I vote yes for the tabletop sim port
It genuinely looks like a really good strategy game unfortunately
Some people have said this could be better themed as a royalty game. I think this could also work as a 2000 teen comedy where the boys want the girls but the girls are put off for various reasons.
Dude this is the perfect time to put this on tabletop, come on do it
Kam you've quickly become one of my new favorite channels. This guy doesn't miss unless it has to do with the US postal service
Funny enough, I think there should have been a "divorce card" where you can have your sons pieces separated from the daughters pieces of other players. Might help give a bit of an out for the other players.
Or a "tragic accident" card, causing a token to travel to the hospital and *not* become a doctor.
Generational conflict? mild inconvenience
Yarmulke too tight? life changing setback
It took me about halfway through the video to realize the background parody edit was changing every time it showed up.
OY VEY! I can't believe my my Own Son is trying to avoid getting a Wife, so it's like Opposite of A Game of Life but without the kids part lmao.
This legitimately feels like it would be fun if it wasn't for you know, the theme
You have no idea how much I've been waiting for a deep dive on this ever since the first video you mentioned it in.
I love how the board literally looks like the board games I badly drew on big blank white posterboard when I was a kid. I wasn’t expecting Cosmic Encounter levels of professional graphic design but the fact that it elicits such a specific memory makes me giggle
The mispronounciations in this video are hilarious 😂
Naches - na-khəs (the ch/kh is like the Spanish j or x or the Celtic ch in loch)
Teitelbaum - title-baum
Tsuris -you actually got pretty close
Payes - pay-əs or pay-es
Channukah - just say Hannukah, again the ch is like j/x in Spanish
I saw this in the board game section in a toy store in the town next to mine. It probably shouldn’t have to be said, but I’ll say it anyway. The town has a predominant Jewish population.
I do not know if they still have copies since it has been a while. But if you ever find yourself in New Jersey, look up Lakewood.
The fact that your sons are pawns is brilliant satire, tbh.
If it had a physical version widely available, I bet my synagogue game night would actually love it. The game seems to have been made for that sort of thing
This knowledge on how to win Oy Vey helped kill my ebola, cured my dogs cancer and inspired me to become an artist

“the arranged marriage meta” is truly one of the phrases of all time, big fan
I admire the intellectual honesty and courage it took here, to do your job no matter where it takes you.
That being said, you're cancelled. I want your youtube badge on my desk in the morning.
I would hope for the USPS to be more speedy with your deliveries, but at this point it's such a well-cemented bit that I wouldn't wanna take that away from you
New idea: The men become Doctors, the women become Patients, Hospital stays the same, and cards are rethemed to traffic obstructions
One thing Kam proves over and over again: never judge a boardgames by its theme
Honestly whilst the game was explained and I saw the board, I thought "Hey this isn't that bad mechanically."
Honestly, for preservation sake alone, tabletop sim could be a great option
5:32 is absolutely unhinged, wretched, beautiful.
the foresight of not including a yellow disc when the single doctor gets swarmed with girls
Habsburg avoided
I try to keep things genetically sound around here
Somebody put simultaneously way too much thought and not nearly enough though into those mechanics. Oy Vey indeed.
To marry a doctor or become a doctor? FUCK IT, JUST DO BOTH!!!
Finally, a board game to achieve my widest dream!
As someone studying religion and theology, the sheer amount of people getting offended in behalf of jewish people is plain worrying. This game is very on-par with jewish humour, and if the people getting offended actually cared for inclusion or whatever their reason for getting offended is, they should get out and ask the rabbi of their local synagogue instead of getting angry behind a computer.
