#39 Building workshop shelving from reclaimed materials - Italian farm renovation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 тра 2024
- This week we're moving about 3 tonnes of construction wood into a new spot, getting rid of old agricultural machines, saying goodbye to our beloved VW Transporter, and building a huge shelving unit from reclaimed materials for our new workshop.
We're Isis & Bertus. We moved from The Netherlands into a 200 year old dilapidated farmstead in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. We are slowly and lovingly renovating this old beauty into a home for ourselves and a place where we can welcome others.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure.

Renovation and building is the constant movement of equipment, tools, recyclables, rubbish and ideas. You guys are killing it - because you are organised and tidy!
Thank you!
I enjoy watching you carefully unearth and organize your property's existing resources. You are finding so many beautiful raw materials. The time spent on clearing and cleaning is also time spent planning and assessing.
Every video you release emphasises how good this lifestyle is for you both. You look so much healthier and contented. I'm loving your journey
Clearing and cleaning makes everything feel so much better. And, then there's Velluto..... I just love him. ❤
I'm not kidding, the more you clean up the more it makes sense (and gets more beautiful every time)
i'm glad it looks that way, it certaily feels that way ❤️
I love watching you create order out of chaos.
I love to see old things repurposed, like your storage shelves.
Hello
Workshop shelves are looking good
Flowers that you planted in the courtyard are looking lovely
Andrew 💐💜xx
The garden around the drive parking area turned out beautifully!!!
it's doing so well (and with minimal watering so far)! the ground cover (creeping thyme and geranium) have almost filled up all the open space by now and we've had something flower in there since mid april (with the daffodils) and thyme. Now we have the salvia and geraniums and soon there will be allium and lavender too ❤️
Out with the old ....in with the new !
You certainly have a piece of heaven in that land and house!
Isis and Bertus you have done so much work, clearing, renovating, sweeping, trimming, planting and you never tire with producing such lovely videos. The calmness you both produce in your work, clearance etc is amazing. Velo the cat is starting to come towards you when you call try and hold food in your hand and try and stroke him. He is beautiful. Those shelves you made from the piping from the troughs is a very good idea Bertus and the wood. Your place is coming on very nicely. Must say felt rather sad to see your van go. As they say 'a door closes another opens'. Have a lovely week Isis and Bertus. Groetjes.
Goodness the space is huge! What a great find all that beautifully aged wood. Some really nice shapes in your stash! I know it probably feels to the pair of you that the cleanup is dragging, but surely week after week we are seeing steady progress!
At least you have plentiful internal areas to work your way through on the rainy days as we saw. I think just about everywhere in Europe must be completely sick of the sight and sound of rain! The rain seems to make the grass and weeds grow at a phenomenal rate, before we know it the next important job we all have to do is cut the grass again! ❤
we're way behind on cutting grass but every time when the grass is dry enough for mowing, it's raining again 🤣 so dreading doing it all with the brush cutter but oh well... 🙈😆
It is odd, but a good cleanup and sorting of stuff is absolutely heart warming. How wonderful to get rid of all that old heavy machinery. The best part is someone may even want it. If not, no doubt the metal is worth saving. My husband George would love your big shed. He is nearly 85 but still, would love larger than he has now got. All that beautiful hardwood would get him drooling. He loves wood. Currently making a couple of step stools out of pine crates, but would prefer to use hardwood, only he doesn't have to purchase the pine. As he gives them away, I am rather glad about it. Best wishes.
Each of your films is hard work and yet so much peace and beauty of the surroundings. It's true that you've been tidying up right from the start, there was a huge amount of debris left behind by the former owners, but the progress is great and visible. The cat still doesn't stay in the house, try to play with him, food and play is the best way to get a cat, he is so beautiful and probably not sure he can stay. Thank you for the video, have a great week and see you again.🐈⬛🍀
All your videos are like little stories, so beautifully edited.
Thank you so much 😀
Just love the shelving from the recycled materials !
Always enjoyable to join you . The sounds of nature on your property are just wonderful . Thank you .
the little garden in front of the house is looking very lush
That’s some exceptionally beautiful planks of wood, nice a dry too.
You’re wood rich.
A HUGE water diviner for the Po River 😉😜
The shelving is fantastic! Buon pensiero e ben eseguito!!
State facendo un lavoro eccellente. La vostra cascina ogni volta è più bella. Siete veramente bravi. 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️
I LOVE seeing how you re-use, refresh, and repurpose things you have on the farm. And it is so satisfying to see you clean up spaces--I'm sure even more satisfying to you!
Well done, it looks so tidy and organised now, and must be good to have all the tools and what's needed at hand, and easy to see what you have.
It sure is!
Looking at how beautiful the planting has softened the parking area in front I can't wait to see how it changes the look elsewhere.👍
Us too!
The hand planed wood looks so cool against the gray wall. A Kodak moment as they say....here in the USA people would pay a pretty penny for that stuff. Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it. You guys are so well organized and lucky to have a lot of space. You and your place is a real treasure!
We've not yet looked into prices for antique lumber here but I'm sure they'd cost a pretty penny on this side of the pond as well.
So much wood for projects.
And again,
So much room for activities☺️.
You have so much abundance that came out of the chaos.
.....and yes, week over week we see the difference.
Liberating.
Worth it.
♥️🇨🇦
Maria
I always love the care you take in layering sound. ❤
Thank you! 🤗
State facendo un lavoro eccellente. La vostra cascina ogni volta è più bella. Siete veramente bravi 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️
Quanti lavori 💪💪, bravissimi 👍👋
Con una proprietà così grande, di certo non ci si annoia. Davvero bravissimi, ciao! 👍👍👍👍
Clearing so much stuff, trash and dust accumulated over centuries is quite a strenuous job. Takes longer than actual reno work but improvements are becoming more visible now. Slowly, slowly as my yoga teacher used to say, will get you there!
Clearing out the old and not-working for the future is such a major step. The wood board you have saved for future use is going to be lovely and helpful along the way. I swear we must have "common genetics" as my absolute favorite thing is clearing out and organizing--ideas for your lovey evoling cascina will be amazing. ..wonderful and light--YES! Might I ask a favor? When the spaces are finally empty and ready for your "next steps" could you do a walking tour within the chicken coop, the cantina, etc.? It would be lovely to see the "chaos" gone and and the blank space ready to fill with your dreams?
We've been thinking about doing a video like that! In a "grand clearing" episode, would you like to hear more about our plans for each space (even if they might change over time) or rather just have a short and sweet overview of the before and after of each space?
Bertus is sad! About van. That was positively poignant. Another gorgeous vid and so much progress. Thanks so much.
OOOh.... I'm so envious of all that lovely old lumber! 🌳
It's such a gift that all of this lumber was already here on the farm!
@@storiesfromthecascina Yes! already aged and usable and thick too... I've been trying to think what to do with those curvy ones, they attract me somehow... have you had any ideas Isis?
I feel like the long curvy one wants to become a bench :-) Some of them will become new lintels for niches in walls or smaller windows too. But we're sure more projects will reveal themselves as we continue working on the farm.
@@storiesfromthecascina Ahah... great ideas! Maybe 2 under a tree as shady benches and I love the niche idea!
What fun! 😀
I was tickled to see the gray kitty gracing you with his/her presence, lol. Before you know it you will be their people! 😜
The shelving unit looks really strong, such a great way of using the materials that were there. Huge changes with cleaning out the buildings, it gives you a much better understanding of how much space you have.👍
Your drone footage is so beautiful, I feel as if I'm floating over the countryside, watching the wind move through the trees below. You bring a sense of calm and timelessness as background for your progress. Thank you for another lovely video.
Wonderful! We're glad to be able to share all of it :-)
Such a smart re-purposing of the trough pipe! You both are master's at recycle/up-cycle and provide inspiration for all DYI-ers.
I agree with Mr. Hopper, you both are so very organised and tidy. Which for me is very satisfying to watch a project from start to finish.
Thank you for the footage of the "three-footed orchid" I have never seen one before and found that visual thrilling!!
Bravo ad thanks for another great video.
You have worked very hard to get to this point, careful, my back hurts just watching…..it’s very exciting to know that your moving into the hew shop very soon and you can plan a working formation that will flow nicely. With all that amazing space, wow this will be great.
You need to run this by inspector Vento first…get his approval.😅
Be well and see you next week.❤
Nothing happens without the prior approval of Mr. Velluto :-P
Nothing like a good clear out of old stuff, sorting and seeing the potential in a space to help motivate!
So true!
Wat maken jullie toch heerlijk relaxte video's! Dank je wel!
Congratulations on your new workshop.
thank you!
What a treasure trove of wood, look at the size of some of them, wow.👍👍
Bravo! Organization is the key. What a great use of the old piping and wooden boards. The both of you should be very proud. It’s been a haul since you both bought the property but now you can see clearly now! Awesome transformation. Hate to see the van go but it’s for the best.
Yes it is! We had many adventures with the van but it's had its time! Onwards :-)
Congrats on your progress and fixing up your home..very nice video 😊👏👍❤
thank you and glad you enjoyed it!
Your patiience is something I so admire! It has turned out so beautiful and airy!! Godnight from sweden
Thank you so much! Good night to you too :-)
The Barn like building looks beautiful all cleaned up,would make a beautiful open concept kitchen living ,dining room area…you’re doing a great job with so much to do 😊
wat een werk! Opgeruimd staat netjes.
Fijn, de oude metalen stukken opgehaald. Balen van de transporter. Wat een heerlijk wandrek van steigerplanken voor de werkplaats. Een mooie week gewenst!!
Dankjewel! Jij ook!
Best team/couple. 🎉
I love watching your progress
Merci en regardant vos vidéos j éprouve une étonnante satisfaction
Great video - thanks!
What a satisfying job - and all from reclaimed materials.
It makes me so happy to know those metal tubes are going to get at least a decade more of use out of them. Probably more as I can see this shelving unit move into a garden shed or greenhouse in the future too.
My favourite dream team at it again! ❤
Thank you Liz !!!
Such a great and important job❤
Good work 👍🏻💪🏻👏🏻
Great view in the beginning of your video, it makes it easier to understand where you are building the ramp and the basic distances involved.👍
Glad it was helpful! We'll try to include shots like that a little bit more frequently going forward :-)
Thank you for sharing your relaxed calm videos ❤
Glad you like them!
I have a similar basin and would advise sealing the rim and outside of the bowl and the slate so it doesn’t mold or be stained by toothpaste. Love the reuse of materials!
Oh, my allergies! I'd need a hazmat suit to deal with all that dust and dirt 😨😵 You're really tough! Absolutely amazing quality video :) you're my top 2 UA-cam channel (the other is Martijn, of course 😅)
Martijn is one of our favourites too (together with roamingwildrosie, make.do.grow, diego leon and a few others), so it's an honour to be up there in your top 2 with him
The way you approach your project is great
Glad you think so! We're doing it in a pretty intuitive but grounded way, always focusing on the next step instead of getting overwhelmed by the muchness of it all :-)
I love watching your channel, your work ethic is amazing. In German my father used to say “ aufräumen “ 😊😊
in dutch: "opruimen" 😊
So enjoyed the video. Im amazed at your unfolding vision and how many skills you both have. What a place, what great spaces!
Thank you so much!
I really appreciate your videos and your efforts are really trying and helpful
Glad you like them!
Complimenti ragazzi , state facendo proprio un bel lavoro.
Grazie mille Gianfranco!
The short pieces of pipe that you cut off would make some good wind chimes just a thought.
Thought you were so blessed to find people to haul all the things you won't be using, off for you. Also wondered what you would have had accomplished by now if all those things wouldn't have been there in the first place. ( : Just a thought! You're doing a great job, keep on keeping on! Also, thanks for the nature shots, I love them!
the people who came to pick up the machines run a company that sells refurbished machines and old iron. so they're making money off of this stuff 😊 if none of it would have been here we'd definitely have been able to start other projects quicker for sure, but then we'd also had to miss out on some wonderful finds 😊 in italy you can usually barter off the sales price of a house if you're willing to take all the stuff that's inside. if you demand it to be delivered empty, it's also going to be completely empty. you don't get to choose what things you want to keep.
@@storiesfromthecascina You chose smart, good for you!
Always something to do on wet days
Certainly :-) Always something to do whatever the weather ;-)
I love how organized you guys are. It warms my Virgo heart. I've lost track of all your buildings though.
We will try to make the internal coherence between the buildings clearer in future videos. But if you need a quick refresh of what buildings there are and where, we do a little tour in video #1 :-) Thanks for following and supporting our adventure!
Isis is a capricorn and Bertus a saggitarius, not sure what that says about us as in many ways Bertus is the more tidy and organised on of us both :-P
Thank you!
Our pleasure!
Wow you have been really busy. You have got some beautiful buildings ❤️ ps I really thought the cat was going to come running over to you. One day he will ❤️❤️❤️
Only when there's a bowl of food involved for now :-P
Bravissimi 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻e un piacere guardarvi e notare i risultati .
👏🏻🌷🧚♀️
grazie cecilia! ❤️
🥰🌷🧚♀️
Video tuyệt vơi
😊
I would love to visit you, you are doing a fantastic life time job.
How is the neighborhood cat? Is this already somewhat approachable?
he ate from a bowl that i held in my hand this week. but still no touching :-) there's definitely a little bit of progress every week.
That Cortese thing could be from the first world war!
It might be! We've been googling and looking through old photos online but haven't been able to find a perfect match.
Your options are endless because of the care, time and hard preparation work you are doing! A rushed job is usually a botched job!
Just a recommendation: Maybe it's not a good idea to plant flowers (or any plants) close/directly to a building/wall. Water or moisture is potentialy "trapped" and the wall can't breath to dry. It keeps the earth and wall damp and in the long run can damage the wall do to moisture > mold ingress. Once there is mold in the wall substance, it's (very very) hard to kill the fungus completly and permanently. In general it's better to keep water and moisture as far as possible away from the house - inside and outside. That's the reason why in places with alot rain (or more rain, like for example the neatherlands aswell) there are also roof gutters with a drainage that is directed away from the house or directly into the sewers.
In general I agree, however, sunflowers like dry soil and don't need that much water and the seeds are pretty much in the drip line of the roof. Also, it's a shed, not a living space.
Brilliant & resourceful! ❤
What did you both do for your careers before this project ?
We talk more about our previous life and careers in video #24 :-)
🥰🥰🥰🙏🙏🙏🦝🦝🦝
So where are actually living at the moment then ?
Part of the property is in habitable conditions and that is where we live now. If you haven't seen it yet, have a look at video #2 for a tour :-)
Почему эта милая дама не завяжет платок, выполняя такую пыльную работу?

@@storiesfromthecascina Спасибо за ответ!
Please wear masks, hats and gloves. You breath in a lot of dust your lungs will not thank you. You will beg bugs and dust in your hair. Hard hats and you need gloves. I enjoy your vlogs but am concerned about your safety.🇨🇦. I work in the medical field.
I appreciate your concern
