"Don't you DARE look down! Volleyball is a sport where you are always looking up!" -Coach Ukai
It's bitter-sweet that the last line his voice actor gave was to encourage his players. It's also sweet that the studio named one of the soundtracks after this quote to honor him.

Man I love this show. The way they dive into characters backgrounds and make them real, and make a connection to the viewers is just excellent. Caus I think a lot of people can relate to being short like Hinata and being looked down upon for that, figuratively and literally, and in Tendons case, being bullied because of how he looks. Everything about hiaykuu is just brilliant

@@squallneko Narita is one of the second year players who quit the team when old man Ukai was coaching because the training was too tough, and then later came back. He's on the bench team so during practice he often matches up with Suga and plays against the starting rotation. During one of the previous games, when Suga was subbed in, they actually put Narita into the game and took out Hinata. This is because Narita and Suga have played more together and Suga can't do the super quick with Hinata anyway. In this game we got to see Narita play with both Suga and with Kageyama, as well as Hinata playing with both Suga and Kageyama.

Victoria, an interesting fact most people miss: Ushijima's dad told him about the best ace of his time, who could make you feel like he could do anything with any toss you gave him. Ushijima became the kind of player his dad would be proud of. His physicality, his skill, everything that makes him a great volleyball player is driven by wanting his dad to be happy and proud of him.

I think it's actually a bit subtler than that. From the way Ushijima talks about it, I don't think he does what he does for his dad. Rather, I think it's just that his dad's enthusiasm rubbed off on him. For example, with talking about the ace, his dad said it with such genuine zeal and awe that little Ushijima must've been like "Wow, that person DOES sound amazing. I wanna play like THAT, that sounds awesome!"

If I remember correctly, the reason Uchiwaka's dad says at 13:30, "The fact that he's different than other people will probably be his strength" is because his mother and grandmother wanted to remove his left handedness by forcing him to learn to use his right. This was common for years around the world, but especially with Japan's focus on history and culture. Being left handed would be seen as weak.
PS. If she does talk about this in the video my bad, I had to pause right at that point and wanted to make the post so more people would be likely to see it.

So for clarification about why Sugawara is setting from the start of the 5th set: At the end of the 4th set, Kageyama was essentially hitting the limits of his stamina, and was starting to make very uncharacteristic errors because of it. So they’re resting him up as best they can to bring him in later in the set.
Personally, I think it makes sense even though it’s rocking the boat, as they wouldn’t want to risk Kageyama getting more and more tired and having his performance deteriorate towards the end of the 5th set, as that would likely result in them needing to switch him out for Suga for the end of the 5th set, which would probably be a pretty terrible time to have to switch him out, especially for the team’s morale.

    • @hatimdinho

This often happens in NBA or even NHL games where coaches manage the teams rotations so that they can have their strongest unit fresh (as possible) in crunch time.

    • @BigShrimpin_
      @BigShrimpin_ 3 роки тому +2

Suga is dependable and stable enough to keep them in the game while he's subbed in. Sure, he's probably not gonna make any game winning plays, but unlike what was happening with Kageyama, he won't make uncharacteristic errors that drop points. Kageyama in the meantime can rest, and as long as Karasuno are still in contention when he comes back in, they can make a comeback, which almost certainly wouldn't happen if they had to put Suga in last minute, he's not bad, but Suga's not going to make any of the game winning plays that you need against Shiratorizawa, not to mention that it entirely puts Hinata's quick out of the question.

Don't feel bad about judging satori, that's literally his character design. He has been designed to look a bit creepy. In character design certain combination of shapes, colours, proportions, their behaviours and body language(gestures) can invoke certain vague feelings. That's literally what art and design does, make people feel something. Of course it's not an objective science but yeh. Hinata didn't jump because of telepathy. There's this concept in Japanese folklore called "ki," more famously known by the Chinese "chi." Seems like Crunchyroll glitched out a few times, which isn’t your fault at all, so dw!! But here are some things you might want to rewatch in case you missed them:
    • The final scene in episode 8 /doesn’t/ end with Ukai saying that, actually-try watching it again and there’ll be a surprise at the end :)
    • I don’t know if Crunchyroll might’ve skipped this earlier, but there’s some Ushijima backstory here that wasn’t shown in your reaction, where they talk a bit about his lefthandedness and the type of family he grew up in. That’s near the middle of the 7th episode I believe-go to the very beginning of the scene where Shiratorizawa are all eating lunch and talking to each other in the cafeteria.
And this isn’t explicitly mentioned in these episodes, but Narita is Karasuno’s backup middle blocker! He’s one of the second years who quit the club in his first year but came back eventually, like Ennoshita. :)
Thanks again for another wonderful reaction!!

It has a pretty epic ending after the coaches line, I recommend trying to watch the final like minutes or two after that, cause it's pretty hype. Looking forward to the final two episodes of this insane season.

What sad is that the Duo of Shiratorizawa (Tendou and Ushijima) also has sad backstories that can make you relate to them.
Like, being called scary because of your appearance and how you act is sad especially if that makes people aloof of you. Or that your Family wants to correct your left handedness just to be called "normal" and then the only protector you had, left you alone in that household.

Sorry, I'm behind, been a little busy, but just to clarify, in episode 7 when Tsuki's expressions are on his face, it's an expression of frustration of not being able to play, and not so much of physical pain. The reason you were confused as to why everyone was talking about his teammates is because everyone was trying to cheer Tsuki up and win for him because they've seen how much he's grown for the team; because a year prior Tsuki would not have been able to feel this frustration so openly and honestly with his teammates.

I remember in your earlier reactions you said something along the lines of, how you don't understand why people find anime characters "cute" since they are just a drawing. But now 3 seasons into Haikyuu its funny to see how you simp over younger versions of characters. It's funny to see how a non anime viewer's perspective changes once they give anime a chance. It's not for everyone, but you never know until you give it a try. Anyways just a passing thought lol

I like Satori because it feels like he turned his childhood bullying into a strength by embracing it. They called him a monster and hated him because he was really good at stuffing their attacks, and took pleasure in shoving it back in their faces. Instead of letting that bullying and contempt push him away from volleyball, he said screw them, I LIKE having haters. Making people upset by being better than them is fun, and it's their own fault for taking it personally, not mine just for playing my position. He's a really admirable character for showing that being bullied doesn't have to define you, and you don't have to run away from the things people bully you for and change who YOU are just because it bothers someone else.

I played Volleyball on my second year of high school. Brazil has always been a strong country for volleyball players so we're used to hear about it, but I wasn't that fond of it, just needed a excuse to not be at home during week days afternoon.
Haikyuu in fact made me appreciate it a bit more, to the point of staying up late to watch the Olympics or having breakfast with the highlight of matches from the italian league as background noise.
I believe in the end it doesn't really matter where your love for it comes from and neither if it doesnt end up being something big in your life after all, but it really is impressive and really heartwarming how a good narrative and passion for something can bring random people together.

You're right actually. I started playing Volleyball at 33 years old after watching this show. Joined a local team which doesn't play in any league, just having fun training and playing each other. I'm having a blast playing up to 3 evenings a week if my job allows it. Last time I played before was 2007, when I went to high school. Now I wish I started in my youth with a little more ambition, but it's fine :-)

The last 5 or so minutes of S3E8, starting with the flashback to the opposing coach's days as a player, has my vote for best moment in the series. The utter desperation in Karasuno as they fight through the long rally, the quiet yet simple strength and declaration from Shiratorizawa that "We're stronger," the utter defeat as the crowd chants "One More Point," Coach Ukai's final words, and then the incredibly hype moment that Vic missed at the end of the episode that offers a glimmer of hope. The roller coaster of emotions is unmatched for me even after Season 4. Just perfect sports drama.
