Interesting approach Burnes had tonight. He was all over the zone early, but on the edges and mixing up everything all game, so he was ahead most of the night and got a lot of early count contact in play, but nothing hard hit enough to be more than a single. When he had runners in scoring position he switched up, expanded the zone, went to swing and miss focus instead of the pitch to contact focus. I think it had hitters off balance and led to better swings and misses, especially early in the game. Adolis Garcia looked totally overmatched on 3 pitches in the first inning and then hit a 1-0 homer to lead off an inning in his next at bat. Burnes gave up 9 hits, at least 5 were ground balls so that’s, statically, gonna be 3-5 hits for every 9 ground balls, especially those weaker ones, making today an anomaly. Despite 9 hits and only 5Ks(you’d think he’d have more to have gotten out of 9 hits of trouble over 7 innings), he gave up 1 run over 7 innings and threw 88 pitches. So if it wasn’t 9-1 after 7 he would have gone 8 in my opinion, especially with 4-5-6 coming up and dominating their best in Seager to finish the 7th. With this pitching style, this defense and offense, I think Corbin has figured out what he’s gotta do to win every fifth day, and I think it compliments this team so well he’s going to win a Cy young doing it. The schedule is a lot easier in the second half and his competition for Cy young consists solely of pitchers with little to no experience pitching a full season, let alone doing it as the expected ace of their staff, he should start the ASG and he is the front runner for Cy Young at this point, in my opinion.

Imagine if Westburg got called up end of July last year instead of June? He would be the AL ROY without question. It’s almost a bad thing that he had success when he got called up last year and got the ABs and roster days to exceed his rookie status in 2023. Or we would have that ROY draft benefit coming again next year, but if Cowser is able to play everyday he’s going to win because he’s figuring it out. 3 homers in 3 games including a lefty and a 1 handed 400+ footer after spoiling a nasty change up. Both of which show he’s going to stop struggling against lefty’s and offspeed pitches.
The orioles better win as many game as the can when the Yankees get hot is not gonna be good .. every team goes thru a bad stretch I rather happen now than at the end of he season
