I drive the XC40 D4 R-Design, same color like this one. I saw your review of it and it was the only small SUV you marked as 'Buy' at the final verdict. That's exactly what I did and oh boy, oh boy, super satisfied!
Did a test drive in the C40 and the XC40 and really couldn't tell them apart from a driving perspective. Opted for the C40 in the end as we dont need to put adults in the back most of the time and the styling is just better. Betting on a higher resell value as well.
We tried both as well. We won’t have adults much in the back either (though sometimes..), but will have two kids there. But the view in the rear is A LOT better in the XC40, also the storage in the back is better. I also didn’t like that the sunroof doesn’t have a cover in the C40. In the XC40 you can cover it, plus open up the front part of the glass roof completely. I even like the looks of XC40 more. But yeah, the C40 is real nice as well!
There is no such thing as Volvo anymore. They are Geely's made in China. owned by China. Buying a Volvo is directly supporting high end jobs slowly being drained away from western countries. Your kids sitting safely in the back of your Volvo, wont have a single job to go to once they leave University. All of the jobs in China will be for the Chinese only. But go ahead, destroy your children's future and buy a Volvo.

I've had it for 2 weeks, it's brilliant! The range is fine as a suburban commuter and the acceleration is fun. Google Automotive is better than Tesla's UI while the car is built like a tank. This is a way better driving experience than the Model Y which of course has best in class battery/motor technology, but it's not a great place to be day in day out.
The Polestar 2, XC40 and C40 are literally the successors of the V40. They are all based on the new common CMA platform, which was shown as concept car back in 2016, if I remember correctly.
just saw one of these at the dealer yesterday, frankly it's STUNNING. the proportions are hard to tell in pics (and ironically also from a distance) but getting up close is when the design language starts to work it's magic. same thing occurs with the Polestar 2, been seeing a few driving around for months, but never thought much of them from a far until i PHYSICALLY stopped in to a local dealer. WARNING: if you don't want to be tempted to buy one on the spot, then i strongly suggest you DO NOT test drive one either, yes they're that good (well at least the ones fitted with Ohlins).
I have test driven a Polestar 2 and it was decent but not great. Range is was the worst part of it. Also the interior quality was pretty awful compared to Volvo branded vehicles. Best EV i have tried was a Mercedes EQS. EQC was good but it had awful range.

Depends on so many things. Had mine 3 months now, almost 4000km on the clock. Averaging 19kW/h per 100km overall, but can easily get 400 km on an average 25C day doing 80-90kph. On the other hand, climbing Hurricane Ridge (about 60km) in NW Washington, we used 26% battery going up (1800m) and gained 10% on the way back down with 3 in the car, and no, didn’t have to touch the brakes at all.

So far the C40 recharge commute of 35 miles to Washington DC uses 14% (starting at 90% charge) in 35 degree weather. 90% charge left for 12 hours (30s temp) unplugged had no battery drainage.
@@bosternou96 We have not had a problem with rear visibility. The larger side mirrors and safety systems make up for this. Also, the rear seat top folds down. It is like driving a coupe. You should go to Volvo and test drive the vehicle for 30+ minutes.
@@jeamiepowell5190 thanks I test drove a xc40 at Volvo and only sat in a c40 without driving it. The salesperson insisted they are very similar driving wise so no point in test driving one. Sitting in it, it indeed looks narrow but I wonder whether it’s too limiting to see through such a small window while driving. Don’t have time to visit volvo again. Leasing it through work and the c40 core is surprisingly £50 cheaper than the XC40 core (taller back window, but no camera for parking… and no glass roof). Tough decision!
Well, Matt, most car manufacturers don't put ISOFIX anchors up front because it is considered very dangerous. If you get in a crash and the child gets hit by the airbag or the rear facing childseat does it can get very bad very quickly

I got one of these in 2022 and it is really cool. What's great is not many people around have one, so it is somewhat unique around town. It's quirky, a bit weird, and impossible to see out of... But it looks fantastic and it's really quite fast and it's pretty comfy.

Which is a good point well presented however the added practicality is a bonus; if this becomes your family car and you’ve got triplets you’re sorted with the front isofix. Having isofix in the front also means you can have a far safer set up compared to a standard belt “connection”.
@@RB_750GS I agree that Isofix in the front is a good thing and ofc circumstances could prescribe that you need to use it, or your kids are older and it’s less of an issue. Always worth stating though imo. You don’t have a young child next to you just to see if their ok, if it’s practical and safer to have them in the back.
It's crazy that it's vegan friendly and not plastic friendly !!! Most of the materials substituting the leather are plastics , those corporates are ruining the world. People are still consuming meat , and the idea of recycling animal skin into leather doesn't impact the environment as plastic do.

Imagine getting into a car after Mat.. 15 minutes long and some of the damage he does: 1) Kerbs the rim 2) Damages the boot lid 3) Empties a full waste bin through the interior 4) Pours a bottle water on the rear while opening the rear spilling it into the interior. I know that there's still a shortage of batteries for the electric revolution but seriously. 45000 for a car with no where near the amount of parts that's in an Ice car. When is the industry going to address the price disparity? At some point these electric cars must be cheaper than the ones that they are replacing. They're just too expensive.

I have to say that by now I kind of wonder if anybody really actually changes anything about their climate control? I for one have it in Auto mode forever and only change the temperature from time to time by a degree or so. Never ever have to change the vents of the speed of the fan 🤔 I mean in the end it's automatic for that exact reason, so I don't have to care at all

Exterior is nice but I personally find the interior a bit dated - I think it's the infotainment system which looks old now. Plus why keep the transmission tunnel. I guess £45k is about right for an XC40 adapted with an electric motor, since they didn't build it ground-up.

Generally I like modern Volvos (LOVE the design of the S90 saloon!) and a crossover sized electric from them would interest me, but that huge transmission tunnel in an all-electric vehicle is a total deal breaker. The whole point of crossovers/small SUVs is interior space and people carrying in some comfort, and electric cars should have flat floors. I guess we should wait for the designed from the ground up electric vehicles from Volvo...
Dont really get why the tunnel is such a dealbraker. Kids wont care about it, and you are sitting in the front driving. Unless ofc you have 5 adults sitting in the car all the time?
Agreed. I've always thought Volvo SUVs are a bit on the small side in this price range and lack road presence compared to some of their cheaper rivals.
It's based on the CMA platform, which was meant to be for combustion engines. But they use the transmission tunnel to store big parts of the battery. Which is why you have so much space for your feet in the back. So there.
Was in a market for a new car last year (2021), went to volvo dealership and sat in the v90… after a minute got out and thought… for this money it’s not enough car for me. Bought bmw g31 instead. Just felt more car for the money
It does, I have one and it fits just fine if you dont try to ram it in like a buffoon :P But, I did take it out completely to have faster access to the compartments on the bottom
My 2023 Volvo C40 has been causing me trouble lately. When I driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel vibrates very badly, making it quite annoying to drive, not sure if the steering wheel vibration can cost the accident or not. Unfortunately, the dealership informed me that they cannot do anything about it. If you're considering purchasing a Volvo C40, I advise you to be careful and aware of this issue. Additionally, I've been experiencing frequent failures in the data signal almost every week. To restore the signal, I have to manually turn the SIM data off and on again, which is quite inconvenient.

We currently have a XC60, we absolutely love it, and we were looking into trading it in for the C40. We went to test drive it, and even though the driving part was very nice, I was very underwhelmed by the interior styling. I get, and I’m glad that they are going vegan, but the fabric they use looks and feels cheap. The carpet on the floor and on the side looks and feels cheap. The back seats are not very comfortable for tall people, and the middle seat is un-useable, even for someone short like me. I so wanted to love it, but at that price range I was expecting more. Maybe leatherette instead of leather, better quality carpet, etc.
The creaking from the suspension isn't really uncommon, I just watched a video of several electric cars emergency braking and they all had that kind of creaking when stopping
Leased ours through Care by Volvo, our second car with them, and OMG this car is fab. Very fast sub 5 seconds to 60mph. Charge at home so 250 miles ish in charge every day plus the 1 pedal driving charge which is great. Highly recommend EV driving. Its easy, Sat Nav tells us charge on arrival and shows ccs chargers on every journey. Charges to 80% in 25mins on a ultra fast charger. So coffee and bun on longer journeys, easy.
@@bosternou96 yes it is, but side mirrors do a good job, and cameras when parking are great. We are thinking about leasing a KIA sportage now though as C40 is very expensive and we have retired early. All the very best

I have a XC40 (T3) for 3,5 years and I am still very happy with it. I was thinking about the C40, but the first reviews that I found show that the range tests are as bad as the Polestar 2, about 340 kms on highway only, about 380 kms if you do a mix on roads and highway and about 420 kms if you don't go on highway. Maybe with the next version (231 hp and FWD only) it will be better, but it's kind of a disappointment for me at the moment.

Thank you for brining back the bike! It's not always easy to find out if a car's boot will fit a bike and that's how I stumbled on this channel in 2015 was looking for info on a bike fitting in the boot of a car. And f that load cover if it don't fit under the floor. But seriously, test the boot capacity with bicycle more often again.

I tested this car a few years ago but the updated version (2024) feels totally different with a very signifcant efficiency improvement. Looks the same but worth an updated test Matt?
Drove it last week out of interest and because there are no Polestar dealers anywhere close. Thought it's pretty sh1t for the price/lease-rate. Now I'll watch your review. Edit: even those auto-folding headrests for the rear-seats aren't standard in the base model (in Germany at least), as are a number of other things you showed - the pricing is pretty ridiculous for such a compromised ICE-based car. Edit2: On a 91.8km test drive I averaged 28.2kWh/100km (aka 45kWh/100miles or 2.2 miles/kWh if I'm not mistaken) - granted I had a few km of Autobahn in there but also a lot of rather gentle city and country road driving - Kia EV6 would be quite a bit more efficient with the same driving I'd say, Tesla Model Y certainly. Edit3: you didn't complain about the interior materials, or did I miss it? I had the blue carpet and door liners - I liked the idea but the material looked cheap - almost "too recycled". The hard plastics in many places are common in this class but the amount of disgusting, gloss black was slightly shocking to me.. Edit4: that view out of the back was comical. I had the seat as low as it goes and the rear window was still not only tiny but also with a way too low top-border. I guess without the side mirrors I could see about 100-150m back, not more. That alone disqualified the C (over the XC40) for me, especially if you sometimes drive on highways where cars might approach _fast_ from behind.

@@DenielCrack naah, c40 has better packs and is a bit cheaper, at least here. Also the c40 is way more powerfull in AWD, and looks better :) The suspension felt more comfy too. Q4 is a fine car but I thihnk the Volvo has an edge here

Did a test drive in the C40 and the XC40 and really couldn't tell them apart from a driving perspective. Opted for the C40 in the end as we dont need to put adults in the back most of the time and the styling is just better. Betting on a higher resell value as well.
Wish they had them around me for test drives.
We tried both as well. We won’t have adults much in the back either (though sometimes..), but will have two kids there. But the view in the rear is A LOT better in the XC40, also the storage in the back is better. I also didn’t like that the sunroof doesn’t have a cover in the C40. In the XC40 you can cover it, plus open up the front part of the glass roof completely.
I even like the looks of XC40 more. But yeah, the C40 is real nice as well!
There is no such thing as Volvo anymore. They are Geely's made in China. owned by China. Buying a Volvo is directly supporting high end jobs slowly being drained away from western countries. Your kids sitting safely in the back of your Volvo, wont have a single job to go to once they leave University. All of the jobs in China will be for the Chinese only. I've had it for 2 weeks, it's brilliant! The range is fine as a suburban commuter and the acceleration is fun. Google Automotive is better than Tesla's UI while the car is built like a tank. This is a way better driving experience than the Model Y which of course has best in class battery/motor technology, but it's not a great place to be day in day out.

The Polestar 2, XC40 and C40 are literally the successors of the V40. They are all based on the new common CMA platform, which was shown as concept car back in 2016, if I remember correctly.

just saw one of these at the dealer yesterday, frankly it's STUNNING. the proportions are hard to tell in pics (and ironically also from a distance) but getting up close is when the design language starts to work it's magic. same thing occurs with the Polestar 2, been seeing a few driving around for months, but never thought much of them from a far until i PHYSICALLY stopped in to a local dealer. WARNING: if you don't want to be tempted to buy one on the spot, then i strongly suggest you DO NOT test drive one either, yes they're that good (well at least the ones fitted with Ohlins).
I have test driven a Polestar 2 and it was decent but not great.
Range is was the worst part of it. Also the interior quality was pretty awful compared to Volvo branded vehicles.
Best EV i have tried was a Mercedes EQS. EQC was good but it had awful range.
If you think that is stunning, then you have no taste or a sense of style. Sorry to point that out to you.

Depends on so many things. Had mine 3 months now, almost 4000km on the clock. Averaging 19kW/h per 100km overall, but can easily get 400 km on an average 25C day doing 80-90kph. On the other hand, climbing Hurricane Ridge (about 60km) in NW Washington, we used 26% battery going up (1800m) and gained 10% on the way back down with 3 in the car, and no, didn’t have to touch the brakes at all.

So far the C40 recharge commute of 35 miles to Washington DC uses 14% (starting at 90% charge) in 35 degree weather. 90% charge left for 12 hours (30s temp) unplugged had no battery drainage.

@@bosternou96 We have not had a problem with rear visibility. The larger side mirrors and safety systems make up for this. Also, the rear seat top folds down. It is like driving a coupe. You should go to Volvo and test drive the vehicle for 30+ minutes.

I test drove a xc40 at Volvo and only sat in a c40 without driving it. The salesperson insisted they are very similar driving wise so no point in test driving one.
Sitting in it, it indeed looks narrow but I wonder whether it’s too limiting to see through such a small window while driving. Don’t have time to visit volvo again.
Leasing it through work and the c40 core is surprisingly £50 cheaper than the XC40 core (taller back window, but no camera for parking… and no glass roof). Tough decision!
Well, Matt, most car manufacturers don't put ISOFIX anchors up front because it is considered very dangerous. If you get in a crash and the child gets hit by the airbag or the rear facing childseat does it can get very bad very quickly
Most cars have a way to disable the front passenger airbag.

I got one of these in 2022 and it is really cool. What's great is not many people around have one, so it is somewhat unique around town. It's quirky, a bit weird, and impossible to see out of... But it looks fantastic and it's really quite fast and it's pretty comfy.

One thing: whilst I agree isofix in the front is a good thing: a young child is much safer in the back of a car facing rearward 👍🏻
Which is a good point well presented however the added practicality is a bonus; if this becomes your family car and you’ve got triplets you’re sorted with the front isofix. Having isofix in the front also means you can have a far safer set up compared to a standard belt “connection”.
@@RB_750GS I agree that Isofix in the front is a good thing and ofc circumstances could prescribe that you need to use it, or your kids are older and it’s less of an issue. Always worth stating though imo. You don’t have a young child next to you just to see if their ok, if it’s practical and safer to have them in the back.

I have to say that by now I kind of wonder if anybody really actually changes anything about their climate control? I for one have it in Auto mode forever and only change the temperature from time to time by a degree or so. Never ever have to change the vents of the speed of the fan 🤔

Generally I like modern Volvos (LOVE the design of the S90 saloon!) and a crossover sized electric from them would interest me, but that huge transmission tunnel in an all-electric vehicle is a total deal breaker. The whole point of crossovers/small SUVs is interior space and people carrying in some comfort, and electric cars should have flat floors.
I guess we should wait for the designed from the ground up electric vehicles from Volvo...
Dont really get why the tunnel is such a dealbraker. Kids wont care about it, and you are sitting in the front driving. Unless ofc you have 5 adults sitting in the car all the time?

Volvo makes an all electric crossover called the XC40, if that’s what you’re going for.
It's based on the CMA platform, which was meant to be for combustion engines. But they use the transmission tunnel to store big parts of the battery. Which is why you have so much space for your feet in the back. So there.

The load cover fits perfectly fine in the storage area of the XC40 Recharge. Odd that it doesn't in the C40.

My 2023 Volvo C40 has been causing me trouble lately. When I driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel vibrates very badly, making it quite annoying to drive, not sure if the steering wheel vibration can cost the accident or not. Unfortunately, the dealership informed me that they cannot do anything about it. If you're considering purchasing a Volvo C40, I advise you to be careful and aware of this issue.
Additionally, I've been experiencing frequent failures in the data signal almost every week. To restore the signal, I have to manually turn the SIM data off and on again, which is quite inconvenient.
...And that bring me on to five annoying things about this car....Already went through a dozen annoying things about this car... haha!!! Classic!!! Great review Mat!!!

We currently have a XC60, we absolutely love it, and we were looking into trading it in for the C40. We went to test drive it, and even though the driving part was very nice, I was very underwhelmed by the interior styling. I get, and I’m glad that they are going vegan, but the fabric they use looks and feels cheap. The carpet on the floor and on the side looks and feels cheap. The back seats are not very comfortable for tall people, and the middle seat is un-useable, even for someone short like me. I so wanted to love it, but at that price range I was expecting more. Maybe leatherette instead of leather, better quality carpet, etc.
The creaking from the suspension isn't really uncommon, I just watched a video of several electric cars emergency braking and they all had that kind of creaking when stopping
Leased ours through Care by Volvo, our second car with them, and OMG this car is fab. Very fast sub 5 seconds to 60mph. Charge at home so 250 miles ish in charge every day plus the 1 pedal driving charge which is great. Highly recommend EV driving. Its easy, Sat Nav tells us charge on arrival and shows ccs chargers on every journey. Charges to 80% in 25mins on a ultra fast charger. So coffee and bun on longer journeys, easy.

We are thinking about leasing a KIA sportage now though as C40 is very expensive and we have retired early.

I have a XC40 (T3) for 3,5 years and I am still very happy with it.
I was thinking about the C40, but the first reviews that I found show that the range tests are as bad as the Polestar 2, about 340 kms on highway only, about 380 kms if you do a mix on roads and highway and about 420 kms if you don't go on highway.
Maybe with the next version (231 hp and FWD only) it will be better, but it's kind of a disappointment for me at the moment.

Thank you for brining back the bike! It's not always easy to find out if a car's boot will fit a bike and that's how I stumbled on this channel in 2015 was looking for info on a bike fitting in the boot of a car. And f that load cover if it don't fit under the floor. But seriously, test the boot capacity with bicycle more often again.

Drove it last week out of interest and because there are no Polestar dealers anywhere close.
Thought it's pretty sh1t for the price/lease-rate.

Edit: even those auto-folding headrests for the rear-seats aren't standard in the base model (in Germany at least), as are a number of other things you showed - the pricing is pretty ridiculous for such a compromised ICE-based car.
Edit2: On a 91.8km test drive I averaged 28.2kWh/100km (aka 45kWh/100miles or 2.2 miles/kWh if I'm not mistaken) - granted I had a few km of Autobahn in there but also a lot of rather gentle city and country road driving - Kia EV6 would be quite a bit more efficient with the same driving I'd say, Tesla Model Y certainly.
Edit3: you didn't complain about the interior materials, or did I miss it? I had the blue carpet and door liners - I liked the idea but the material looked cheap - almost "too recycled". The hard plastics in many places are common in this class but the amount of disgusting, gloss black was slightly shocking to me..
Edit4: that view out of the back was comical. I had the seat as low as it goes and the rear window was still not only tiny but also with a way too low top-border. I guess without the side mirrors I could see about 100-150m back, not more. That alone disqualified the C (over the XC40) for me, especially if you sometimes drive on highways where cars might approach _fast_ from behind.

@@DenielCrack naah, c40 has better packs and is a bit cheaper, at least here. Also the c40 is way more powerfull in AWD, and looks better :) The suspension felt more comfy too. Q4 is a fine car but I thihnk the Volvo has an edge here
