      It is interesting how different the swing timing needs to be with a 48 inch (or so) driver. All my clubs are proportionately overlength to my 47 inch driver. That got rid of the problem of needing two differently timed swings. It also protects my back because I don't have my back extremely bent over at the same time my hips are turning out of the way. Ouch!

      except make it so Ric doesnt know which ball is which until after the round. So he doesnt go into every shot thinking "Ok, now time to hit the range ball..." "ok and now time to hit the ProV1..." That most definitely effects a human; no human in the world is not controlled by their mind. Make both balls blank or look identical, then perform the tests. There is a reason every single PRESCRIPTION DRUG maker performs tests using placebos. And thats with drugs that are supposed to change your body with chemicals...a super simple golf ball test most definitely needs to take into account a bias that will without a doubt effect the outcome if not addressed.

    Thumbs up if you all agree! NOW that you worked on the driver shaft length. You mentioned its hard work to control, so maybe you should do the second half of bryson's process, you should do some bulking up and test bryson's full technique. I'd absolutely watch the process for that on vlogs etc. ALSO BIG GRIPS AND SWING HARDER is step three.

      @ nothing Bryson is doing is considered cheating in my opinion, I dont understand why people are so against him adapting his game to help him on tour? Most top pros in the game have done it..I.e. Rory,Tiger,DJ etc all have built their physical attributes to gain advantage, its just Bryson has taken it to the next level, we also have to remember yes he smashed drives 350+ yards off the tee but he still has to have the talent to get that ball up and down from them positions? I'm sure most of the haters wouldn't have a problem with it if they could do what he's capable of doing 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The swing weight would be quite a bit heavier. You'd need to remove some weight from the head or use a counter balance under the grip to make it feel like the 45 1/2" setup

    • @JDSFLA
      @JDSFLA 3 роки тому

      Here is another site that did this test today and they adjusted the 45" shaft to match the swing weight of the 48". He was able to control the 48" well and picked up clubhead speed, but still overall results favored the shorter shaft. He is a very consistent ball striker, so I enjoy his equipment reviews. ua-cam.com/video/8Xb9F4Kwfsw/v-deo.html

      I use to be an LDer and had an average club head speed of 134mph, which is about 5-10mph faster than the longest hitters on the PGA tour. During 1 competition in Hawaii, I was loading the grid with balls at about 340 yards into a 5mph head wind. Just when I thought I would sneak into the regional finals, another competitor rolled up just before cut off time, swinging about 145mph. I was sitting on the grass behind the tee box and as soon as he hit his first ball, which I lost after about half a second of ball flight, I picked up my club and went home. Not only did I know it was in the fairway from that short time I could even see it, but the sound of the impact left no doubt that I was way out of my league. Later that evening I called Les, the man who was running the LD tournaments in Hawaii, to ask how far the late-comer hit, and was told that he too filled the grid with 6 shots, the shortest was 386 yards.
      Go watch 1 of the LD matches in person. It is very humbling.

    Before I watched this video, I watched the older one where Rick was hitting the 50" shafts. I was hitting what I was told was a 44.5. That video inspired me to buy an uncut 46.5 shaft of the same brand and stiffness I'd been using with good success. Got it all put together (titleist adapter, jumbomax large grip), new shaft was about 4" longer than what I'd been using. Went to the range today and hit old and and (string of happy expletives) new longer shaft; With the longer shaft I hit the F-ing ball just as straight and picked up an honest to god 25 yards. I shit you not. This is worth trying, and I can't wait to blow balls over doglegs left and right with this driver. I'm flying the freaking ball 260 and rolling it out to 290!

  • @roejye06
    @roejye06 3 роки тому

    Interesting video. I started out this year with a shorter length driver with a light shaft, It was working well for me, but towards the end of the season I felt like I was leaving something on the table. Instead of scratching the "get a new to me driver" itch, I decided to look at shafts. I found out the shaft I had was more of a "players shaft" and I decided to try out a higher launching, higher spinning shaft, and I had it cut to 46", figuring it's easier to cut down than extend. Initially it was performing roughly the same, but I started to grip way down and something very interesting happened. The last two rounds I've played my average driving distance has increased 27 yards and I've been getting distances on flat holes that I've only gotten off a 40 foot downhill tee shot. I know it's probably not all down to the driver itself, probably a mix of technique, favorable climate, and a ball change, but man I'm hoping this distance stays over the off-season. So I can just buckle down on ball striking.

    I was a ReMax WLD (long drive) competitor when I was in my late 30s to age 53, and my competition drivers were all 48" long. I couldn't always hit my competition drives in the grid, but when I connected, I would get clubhead speeds of 130 MPH or a bit more, and I won a few competitions with drives between 374 and 382 yards. Today, I am 71 years old, and I won't even consider using a driver that is more than 45" long (my Ping G410 Plus "gamer" driver is actually about 44.75" long). I still play stiff shafts in all of my clubs, and use a "tour stiff" driver shaft, but these days my best drives travel 275-285 yards (carry + rollout), and my average driving distance is more like 250 yards. I know that this is still pretty long for a golfer who will be 72 years of age in 3 months, and my fellow golfers and competitors comment on it regularly (I'm still a competitive golfer, but not a long drive competitor, as I gave that up almost 29 years ago). I'm also a professional clubfitter, and in my 31 years of doing this I have seen no more than a small handful of golfers who can handle a driver that is longer than 45", and most golfers for whom I have done driver fittings are much better served using 44" to 44.5" length drivers. When the golfer cannot hit the ball in the center of the driver face and with a square face angle at impact and a proper club path, the loss of distance and direction is far greater than any added distance that they MAY get on one drive out of every 40 or 50.

    I quit golf for some time but when I played I once was a 6 handicapper. I played at that time a 43" steelnshafted driver. 10 degrees. I averaged 285 including roll. I was like you are now and great with my long and mid irons. When I played a 45 inch shaft I hit pretty well but noticed I became handsy with shorter clubs due to timing effects of longer shafted driver. I just started back playing after many years away. Current handicap is 14. My personal opinion is if an average golfer goes to a longer shafted driver they just won't have to coordination needed to swing it. I think most golfers would better to shorten driver length, try a lower loft and play with lower spin balls til their long game begins to improve. Until then focus in the short game. Love your videos. And like I said you hit your long irons and that 3 wood of yours so well you would never need to change driver lengths. Keep hitting the short grass and keep up the great work.

    You want to swing slower or a limited effort using a 48 inch, better for people that has slow swing speeds, or short back swings. Using a 45 makes you swing “quick” which can ruin your shot. So you take a 48, swing easy and it suppose to go the same as a good 45 inch drive. And if you get the optimum launch (with optimum roll) you may get more distance.
    I use a 48 with 6 degree loft, using a 3/4 - 1/2 backswing length, and it goes as far as my 45 good shot, and as long as my friends good shots. But I swing short and... can go “hard”, which gives me way more control because my backswing is so short. And the main thing I save my back, playing so much. Many can’t go parallel on backswing since it causes major back problems.

    2 suggestions: 1. Grip down 2-2.5 inches on the 48 inch driver to see if control is regained. If so, it might be an option on 1-2 holes/round with wide open fairways and/or on par-5s with wide fairways where it might make the green reachable in 2 strokes. 2. Try a 47 inch driver instead and again try the grip down this time 1-1.5 inches for better control but occasional extra distance.

    there's a couple of things that hurt this test. One is that when you lengthen the club you need to take some weight out of the head or the swing weight gets to heavy. You also need a shaft that is less stiff because when you take the weight out of the head there's not as mush mass to help the shaft flex. Try setting the swing weight to about D-4 or 5 and you may have better results.

    • @deonvanderheever8556
      @deonvanderheever8556 3 роки тому

    One benefit I could see is the increased club head speed with a smoother swing. You were getting the same club speed swinging easier with the 48" shaft. If that could be repeatable, you could get the same distance as the regular shaft without having to go all out. It would still be harder to flush the longer shaft, but maybe with an easier swing you could get used to it.

  • @Ivorengland
    @Ivorengland 3 роки тому

    I didn’t think you could just change shafts without reducing head weight. The swing weight must have gone up substantially. In that case I think it would be more difficult to bring the club face back square to the ball and you would slice it. I had a Cobra long Tom for a while. The head and shaft were very light, as was the grip. I had no problem squaring the clubface and it felt like a normal driver weight. The problem for me is that I couldn’t hit the middle of the clubface consistently enough to keep it in my bag. So if anyone is thinking of trying a 48inch shaft, lower the head, shaft and grip weight (if possible) to retain the same overall club weight and more importantly, to retain a normal swing weight. Then you might have a chance of squaring the clubface and hitting it straight. You could also argue that a longer shaft will change the lie of the club a bit and that will have an effect. Honestly it’s really not as simple as putting in a longer shaft in your current head and off you go. Sorry Rick but I’m just trying to help people save some cash.

  • @vin999cent
    @vin999cent 3 роки тому

    Rick, to use a 48" properly you need to change your swing and the pace of it, no simply accelarate your tradionnal one, like the one Kyle bershire and lately the one of Bryson, super large stance, pure one plane swing, supinate left hand, high speed load ..etc , the name of the game is eliminating the maximum variables and make it simple ,you know better than me. For longdrivers with their powerswing , tradionnal one , particularly the beautiful ones-short distances appears as cardboardswings ...the process is training this new driver swing with normal lenght, and when you got it , go for a Super stiff XX 48'' shaft with a 5-7° head . The cool thing is that when you come back to your normal swing, you ve been improving ...

I should also note that I played 4 years of D1 golf, so it might or be a good idea for everyone. But, for certain people like me it can definitely be a huge advantage.

  • @jarlathbrine7904
    @jarlathbrine7904 3 роки тому

    Rick. I love your honest reviews. Every sport plays with the parameters of the legal rules: Tennis allows for 27.5 inch length frames (standard is 27) and Andy Roddick used this spec to serve at 140 mph plus regularly. All professional/ elite sports will experiment with the maximum potentiality. Bryson is no different and has changed the reference points and should be applauded for this scientific attitude. Fitzpatrick et al who are critical need to find their solution/ response to this or shut up. Bryson shouldn't be criticised for his approach and doesn't win every week and the probable optimum in the pro game is 320 yards average drive with accuracy across variable conditions including tight rough. Driver tech has reached a maximum tolerance (all new drivers are great) so perhaps an interesting challenge will be to host a tournament where all pros use the same spec of ball as this is where distance gains can currently be made. Course designers need to look at bunkering as an option to defend against long hitters to offset the boring target golf of most PGA/ European Tour venues which see -16 plus as consistent winning scores. Perhaps a return to winning scores nearest to par golf might make sense as would You Tube club testing that isn't all about length or stronger lofts but genuine improvement.

    You should see what some of the long drivers use. I've seen 48" but they also go with a R-flex shaft because the whippy nature + length creates insane clubhead speeds.

    My last set of clubs are a couple inches longer than stock and getting the swing weights the same took some doing with the longer shafts. I have weight in the grips on the woods otherwise the weight was excessive at the head but counterweighted they feel the same as the shorter shafts which is good. One thing Rick didn't mention was the sensitivity of the driver face to off center strikes. The modern 'trampoline effect' heads need a centered strike much more than an older head without that feature. My driver has roll to correct off center strikes but doesn't really care if it's hit a little off...they all go about the same which is long and straight. Good video Rick.:)

    I'm thinking about going the other way. I have a TM "mini-driver" that is 43.5" (which used to be standard with steel shafts); I use it in place of my 3-wood. I wonder if I'd be more satisfied with a driver at that length, too. I think putting the ball closer to the sweet spot is more beneficial--distance and accuracy--than is a longer shaft (more distance, worse accuracy).
