@Fogle Either way, it's a lose-lose for him, he gets transferred, he's sent into some entirely different suicide mission, or what you said would happen if he displays the same behaviour in said different regiment, which he almost certainly would, the bloke's mechanism has gone.

    WW1 a general can slap a soldier.
WW2 General Patton was almost thrown out of the army for doing the same thing.

Because in WWI, the newspapers would have either ignored it, or puffed it up to make it look good. In WWII, some newspapers leaned left, and made Patton a villain.

In WW 1 the Germans who fought in China were taken to a POW camp in Japan. A Japanese officer slapped a German soldier. German soldier slapped back. The German soldier was condemned to death but the Japanese then decided that it is ok to CONDEMN him to death but actually did not care to execute him and they told the Germans they simply will forget the execution. The Japanese then had a second thought and told the German soldiers they will open the gates of the POW camp and they can come and go whenever they want, travel around and can move free around. Amazing what one slap can do.

while most of us think this portrays verdun, mccready resembles more of general nivelle during the ill fated nueve chapelle offensive. the french army had been battered but won back its spine but then to be thrust into such a poorly conceived plan by nivelle that it lead to widespread mutiny. the germans never this. general petain, of ww2 vichy france infamy, patched up the army, forgave most of the mutineers but about 100 were executed to set an example. nivelle was a pompous ass, the glory hound, who had no conception what to do if your plans don't succeed. english general doug haig is given a short stick for the likes of the somme and ypres, but both to his credit he corrected in time to reverse defeats into victories.

Read the book, "The Christmas Truce". The story about an impromptu true during WWI that was started by the frontline troops and how the generals reacted to the soldiers not willing to kill each other on Christmas. Yes, the men and women who start wars should be led up to the front lines at the moment the fighting begins....but will never happen because they are cowards and evil people.

En 1957, esta película fue de las primeras bélicas que se filmaron despues de la terminación de la 2da guerra mundial (1945). Esta película impuso moda. De hecho la serie de los 60s; Combat! la tomo como modelo.

I had a very similar experience with a Finnish Volunteer in Ukraine.
We fought in Kyiv together and everything was fine. But then he got posted to Zaporizhia and when he returned he no longer was himself.
He would stare right through you half the time. He never spoke by himself. His eyes would light up briefly and he would give short replies when you talked to him, but then he went back to blank.
It was painful to see for me, who had only known him for weeks.
I don't want to imagine how painful this must be for his wife 🙏
