  • The home of a dictator - Joseph Stalin is one of the 21st Centuries most influential and controversial characters. The former leader of the Soviet Union (USSR) was born here in Gori, Georgia (former Russian Empire). Here in Gori there is an entire museum dedicated to 'Uncle Jo' as well as a statue in the town's main square. We traveled to Gori from Tbilisi, to look around the museum and try to understand the feelings in this town towards the local man who rose to become leader of a World Superpower.

    Yes, history is complicated. But let's be honest about the young Stalin's criminal gang... they killed 40 people during the Tiflis money transport robbery and did many other bank robberies throughout the Russian Empire and assassinations. They also kidnapped the children of wealthy people in exchange for ransom money and had a entire protection racket. While he was doing this, he secretly provided information to the Tsarist secret police, The Okhrana, and regularly ratted out other revolutionaries who didn't agree with him.

    • @MattandJulia
      @MattandJulia  3 роки тому +4

      Yes for sure, we totally agree. We have never heard until now about the kidnapping of children, it's both fascinating and horrifying. Interesting how that fact has been wiped from the history books, can't begin to imagine how many people died just for knowing something about he and his inner circles past.

    I just discovered your channel and I have to say, HUGE respect to you guys. This museum is a difficult topic to cover for vloggers, because it's so controversial. I've even seen vloggers walk out and not even give it a chance, because they felt it was glorifying him. I heard they added some of his bad stuff, later on. But for the most part the museum is dedicated more towards Stallin the MAN. But either way, you should keep an open mind, and try to understand people's differing perspectives. I really don't understand some people. I personally think it's interesting to learn about the early life of people like Stallin. How they got the way they did, and the other side. He may be controversial, but he's still an important part of our history. Julia said it best, that trying to erase it will get us nowhere. We should learn from it so it doesn't repeat. Of course we shouldn't forget his atrocities, but I don't know why it's so bad to show another side of Stallin or try to understand his appeal to some. Some people would only like to glorify the history that suits THEM, and this is wrong.
    By the way, Hitler only started losing when the US entered the war, so Stallin wasn't single handedly responsible for his defeat.

Чем больше советских людей погибнет, тем лучше было для них. 20 миллионов погибших, и это только официально. Мы не считаем американцев союзниками, они предатели. I still believe in Communism in the 21st century. I know many people are against Communism. But I want socialism to be established in the whole world. Because the world is still capitalist. And as long as the countries remain capitalist, the capitalists will continue to exploit the proletarian working people. Socialism is the only way to eliminate any inequality in the world. Joseph Stalin is still our hero. He was the leader of the proletariat. Even after his death, the working people of the world are still following his example. They are following the ideals of Karl Marx,Engels, Lenin. Many people blame Stalin for the killings in the Soviet era. In fact, some things are not true. The kind of infernal killing spree they're doing in Tsar's era is significant. We must remember that history is not always true. Because in my opinion, anyone writes history on his own ideology. So no one should ever be made a villain based on one's doctrine, I think people need to know history more deeply and consider based on it. These are absolutely my personal opinions. Thank you both. Awesome vlog. ❤️😊😊

    Interesting video on Stalin and very well presented by you both..Also my sincere condolences to Julias family members who perished during Stalins regime🙏🙏🙏.. Even though I am from India, I have deep interest in Soviet history, especially the period "reign of terror" unleashed by Stalin called the "great purges"..he didn't even leave the millitary personnel of the Red army also and even Vyacheslav Molotovs (foreign minister) wife was held in a gulag by Stalin.. While it is true that Stalin oversaw the rapid transformation of a feudal state into the superpower of the world, however it was done at a very heavy cost of human life..some sources say that during his later life, he became paranoid and killed many of the Russian people on suspicion of being spies/foreign agents..Stalin had also got rid of Trotsky (assassinated by Ramon mercader in Mexico) and Sergei kirov, two of his biggest political rivals..Stalins head of KGB Levrenty Beria was also a very notorious and sadistic person who got sick pleasure torturing people and raping young girls (however he begged for his life when it was his turn to be killed)..The irony is that despite being an inhuman and murderous tyrrant, Stalin not only was the most powerful person in the world (wielding absolute power) in that period, but also had a huge personality cult in USSR..this is what intrigues me as to how not only Stalin but through human history a number of bloodthirsty, inhuman and murderous tyrants like Attila the hun, genghis khan, taimurlane, ivan the terrible, vladd the impaler, Hitler, mao Tse tung, lenin, Pol pot etc have managed to wield absolute power and have personality cult and deep respect among their fellow people despite their beastly and inhuman nature..perhaps evil has a special attraction for many people in the world, which they do not like to acknowledge..or maybe fear is the key or perhaps its Greshams law that bad guys drive out the good ones..anyways being an Indian I feel the world would be better of with personalities like Gandhi and Buddha rather than Hitler and Stalin. .

Also, there are serious historical opinions that Stalin was not a Georgian by origin, and his appearance is absolutely consistent with these opinions, Stalin had absolutely no Georgian appearance. My ancestors , from my father's side and from my mom's side, also got repressions under regime of Soviet- Bolsheviks, Stalin.

      @Jake Johansson As for the ethnic origin of Stalin, I, among other things, as a historian by profession, who knows in detail all these things and the reality of Georgia, the same opinion that I wrote before, and like I wrote before, others also note the same thing, and for comparison, just in historical terms, I also shared some photos of the ethnic appearance of Georgians, for comparison. Besides everything else, representatives of different peoples have lived and live in Georgia for centuries, many of whom have Georgianized, have a Georgian surname. Maybe the same Stalin had a some part of Georgian origin too, but in any case, Stalin (after his adolescence) and others like him, in any case, neither mentally nor culturally had and have any relation to the Georgian, Georgian cultures and so on. Among other things, as I noted earlier, Stalin, together with other Soviet-Bolsheviks, occupied, annexed the independent democratic republic of Georgia in 1921, and so on. Therefore, once again after all, Stalin and others like him, including the Soviet-Bolsheviks by origin Georgians, were the same enemies for the Georgians, Georgia, as historically known other enemies, invaders. and the overwhelming majority of Georgians, citizens of Georgia think so, naturally without any doubt, like representatives of other peoples, countries in the majority case, including of course, representatives of those other peoples, countries that fell under the seizure, occupation of the same Stalin, the same Soviet - the Bolsheviks.

    Many Russians supported, even loved Stalin. They love a tough leader. Stalin was nothing if not tough. Russia will never change. No matter whether it is Capitalist or Communist, it will always be the same. To return to the vexed topic of Stalin though, my impression is that many loyal Communists thought he was simply removing people who did not support the party, were not doing their part to make the system work, basically upsetting the apple cart. And so they went along with it. People still think this, even now. The widespread condemnation of the Gulag system is not there, in the way Westerners would expect. To compare it to Nazi concentration camps, well, it isn't regarded in the same way at all. Although, its kind of hard to describe the difference. And of course you will get a massively different opinion from a Ukrainian person, than a Russian. Any rate, I certainly get the impression that expectations of Leaders and a beloved Leader is very different from Western sensibilities. Being brutal more of a plus than a minus. 😕

      @@TamunaTati You are correct. The Molotov Ribbentrop Pact was a conspiracy to destroy Poland. That said Germany's invasion of Soviet Union was the deciding factor in WWII. I am English myself, but I do not think that the UK or the United States were the deciding factors in defeating Germany in Europe. Perhaps you should consider the 20 plus million Soviet citizens who died in this conflict or the fact that Germany lost 3 million plus soldiers and a huge amount of military hardware in their attempt to defeat the Soviets. It is also noteworthy that 8 out of 10 german military casulties were on the Eastern Front. The invasion of Russia bled the life blood from the German military.If Germany had succeeded in overrunning Russia we would all be speaking German now in Europe. Whatever you think about Russia it is interesting that their great sacrifice in lives lost is rarely acknowledged in the west when ever WWII is discussed. @@TamunaTati You are spot on; as i said Stalin was one of the worlds greatest mass murderers (along with Mao Tse Tung). I am certainly no fan of Stalin. But the survival of the Soviet Union was the single greatest factor in the defeat of Nazi Germany. Sure the post war division of Europe was a great betrayal by the western victors (especially Poland whose independance was the reason Britain declared war on Germany). But "real politik" in the immediate afermath of WWII left the western victors few options other than to concede influence by the Soviet Union in Eastern & Central Europe. One thing is certain if Germany had been victorious hundreds of millions Slavs would have been murdered as Nazi doctrine deemed Slavs as "unter menchen" . Maybe the unpalatable fact is that Stalinism was the least worst option.

    There's no reason for a travel channel on UA-cam to dig into a subject as terrible as the Stalin years - there is no shortage of books on the subject. There are subjects that are beyond human understanding, and this is one of them. We don't need to hear about them in a series that explores the cuisines of Eurasia.

I believe that history should be encouraged and taught so that the mistakes of the past never happen again and museums like this should always remain for that reason. Don’t take offense Julia I think u misunderstood about Stalin it’s meant that in Georgia since there’s so little of them and their all very patriotic, there’s even a saying I believe that when a Georgian shoots at another Georgian the bullet hits Sakartvelo, anyway, Georgians consider each other close even if their strangers and that’s how their raised so for Stalin to kill “his own” is meant like he’s a traitor who harmed his own kind like his own family if that makes sense, and it’s very surprising and unheard of really for any leader to harm their home country and ethnicity especially a Georgian leader that has never happened since the value of a “kartveli” and “sakartvelo” and its history are practically drilled into their heads since childhood that’s why it’s mentioned so often, of course everyone else killed is important as well but the “his own” is meant to show how he was a traitor/betrayer with no morals and overall bad man it’s meant to make him look worse, any leader would defend their home land and u would especially expect a Georgian man to, understand? It’s not said in a way to say like oh he should kill everyone else and not Georgians no, it not meant to invalidate any other deaths at all, on the contrary actually, maybe it’s the language barrier but basically it’s said to excentuate how truly bad he is, Georgians don’t really like him tho anyone who likes him is prob only from Gori and even they have mixed feelings, they only may like him because they share a village +country and again Georgians take pride in their village and country overall it’s tought to them to be very prideful of their heritage and people, also because he was a powerful and influential man during the time, even though he did do all those horrible things, he helped USSR win WW2. But other than that it’s russians who idolize him for that reason that’s he helped USSR win but Georgians no, most can’t stand him actually and see him as the terrible man he was so don’t take it the wrong way please.

    i think when we say ''his own people'' we usually refer to all the people who could have survived but died on behalf of his orders, sure, being responsible for killing millions is terrible, but for example for war times, on the battlefront,people dieing is a given and inevitable and not nearly as bad as the former, so thats why people say ''his own people'' (still terrible but, its a bit hard to explain, i hope u can understand well enough)

    I was first introduced to the horrors of Stalin's regime when, as a young teenager in the early 70s, a friend of mine gifted me a copy of "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Subsequently, I read the Gulag Archipelago and other works by the same author. Given that introduction and all the other things that I have read regarding Stalin, it is hard to see him in a sympathetic light - especially since his "achievements" were done at such a high cost of human lives. For me, it's not that complicated but I understand how it would be for someone living with the political and social remnants of that regime. Keep posting your videos as I enjoy them highly.

    I previously published the wrong comments by mistake, so now I am publishing these my comments, and specifically: Unfortunately Stalin was from Georgia and unfortunately, other countries also had their own dictators, mass murderers, such as Hitler and so on. Besides all things, which this Monster, mass murderer and his regime did for all of humanity, Stalin, with other Soviet-Bolsheviks occupied the independent democratic republic of Georgia in 1921, like the rest of the other countries, including Russia itself, and like other people, representatives of other nations, many Georgians, also many famous Georgian figures, were killed and destroyed under the dictatorial regime of Stalin, got under the repressions of Stalin and his regime.

    • @ak11472
      @ak11472 3 роки тому

      @Jake Johansson Where did you read in my commentary, the thought that it would be better if Stalin was from another country and the like? I just noted that it is natural, unfortunately, that such a monster as Stalin was from Georgia. Exactly, like everyone else like him, or like Hitler, were born, or are born in different countries, including in Georgia, and this is all natural, it has nothing to do with either ethnic origin, or national culture, and so on and so forth of this or that peoples, nation, because all this is a universal phenomenon, and Georgians, Georgia are also naturally not immune from this, always and everywhere there is and will be Stalin and others like him, the most important thing, in this case, is that in this or that country among the people, they and their supporters would be in the minority, so that Stalin, Hitler and the like do not come in power, in state power, and that this or that country, including Georgia, continues to develop in all for people, for citizens of Georgia in all important directions, and all this is also in my various early comments, or posts I have repeatedly noted, therefore, based on what I have briefly noted again, and from my previous comments here, of course, I only noted, as a person of regret that Stalin, or others like him were from Georgia, such as the fact that, for example, Hitler and other mass morderers were from Germany, or that among the same Soviet-Bolsheviks there were also Georgians and so on., noted regret , and of course, not a positive attitude, as to such universal human things, phenomena and not, once again, as to some ethnocultural, national trait of this or that people, country.

    • @ak11472
      @ak11472 3 роки тому

      @Jake Johansson Accordingly, what I have noted here, of course, like other peoples, countries, Georgians, Georgia also has its positive sides and its not positive sides, its pluses and minuses, like human, humanity and so on and so forth., accordingly, in this sense of the word, no one want to "whitewash", Georgians, Georgia too...Life and this universe is what it is, with all its ensuing phenomena, manifestations, sides, consequences, and so on., accordingly with all different human manifestations and consequences.
