- Wild Armenia | Exploring the incredible Lake Sevan in northern Armenia. Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus region and one of the largest high altitude lakes in the World. We took a bus from Yerevan to travel to this relatively unknown but stunning lake in north eastern Armenia surrounded by incredible snow-capped mountains. Fun fact: Lake Sevan, covers nearly 6% of Armenia's entire territory.
After trying a fish called, Sig - a local delicacy, we wanted to stay in the nearby town of Sevan, but we ended up having quite a bit of trouble with our host...

@@MattandJulia They are Loving it! Theyve been in Georgia since before the pandemic. Bought their van there and built a basic camper.
Buying a van was the only formula for me in Georgia. I combined my projected accommodation budget with my projected transport budget, and bought a Mercedes Vaneo, which is basically an A Class minivan. Took it to Ushguli and beyond. There was no way I could see myself lugging two paraglider rigs and a personal bag around on marshrutkas. I spent too long in Gudauri, making money. SO much I didnt see. Sold the van with bed, camping gear and everything I had added to an Ozzie English teacher when I left. Im supposed to join a mate, driving a van to Tbilisi from Germany on the 17th of July, but covid has buggered that plan for me.

The whitefish "sig", I believe it is the same species as the "sik" that we have "back home" in northern Sweden. (I googled and found : "Sig, also known as siga, is a type of common white fish that inhabits the Sevan Lake and has been introduced from the Ladoga Lake.")
My grandfather and father used to fish for "sik" back in the days. There is also a subspecies of whitefish back home called "siklöja" which is a dwarf species. This one is usually fished for in summer by using one big net that is being pulled out with a boat basically rounding the fish up into a trap. The dwarf species "siklöja" needs to be eaten basically straight away so the fishing for "siklöja" used to be a big feast for the villagers. The men went out and caught the fish, the women stayed on the shore waiting to cook the fish in big boilers. Then the entire village had a big party.

Good decision to leave that guesthouse with their negative attitude... I guess Lake Sevan will be very busy in peak season judging by the many tourists so early in the year as seen in the aerial shot of the monastery. Your meals at both Sevan and Yerevan were awesome; never expected you to enjoy Adana kebap and Beyti kebap in Armenia (but so close to the Turkish border, I guess it can be expected). Thanks for sharing!

Turkish and Armenian food are so similar in so many ways. Lots of similar (and identical) dishes, like Lahmacun (or Lamajo) for example 😊. In the past, lots of Armenians and Turks used to live side by side in lots of cities like, Adana and Gaziantep, Samsun, Trabzon, Kars etc so I guess the cuisine from these areas was almost adopted by both cultures, really interesting 😊

Hiya, to be honest, we can't really compare, both countries are so different to one another if would almost be unfair to choose. The only real thing Georgia and Armenia have in common is that they are Christian neighbours and have a shared recent history but other than that, very different

There is a military base at the edge because it borders Azerbaijan. In the past months, the Azeris have sent down soldiers into Armenian territory which caused the recent tensions to escalate again. Fights broke out, shots were fired, another Armenian soldier was killed. Since then, the villagers in that area have been living in fear. The base you are mentioning protects the civilians from the constant treat posed by the Azeris. Of course, as one would expect any normal country to do, they will not allow you to take arial photos of a highly strategic military base. Go figure 🤷♂️.

Once my family lived there, right next to the lake Goycha in a small village before the mass deportation of azerbaijanis in 1988. Maybe one day, they will have chance to visit their village again. Thanks for the video🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿
