Fukuyama is the best, what a wonderful mind. Why can't we elect people like him into political office?

"Life isn't solved by perfect solutions, its solved by deeply flawed ones." That is some incredibly pseudo-philosophical bullshit. When given two options, if one is superior to the other then you should clearly choose it. If you see Hitler in Fukuyama you are clearly quite delusional.

      David Fair,
If democracy is so wonderful, do we think the best people should be elected? If it cannot perform that task, then what is so good about it? Ironic, isn't it?

I really disagree with the notion that we need to work to feel dignified. In fact a lot of the work that they "allow us to do" is an insult to our self respect. Having a society where you don't need to work to survive would feel like a step forward in civility and progress. I don't understand Fukuyama's assertion. At best it is projecting and at worst it is intentional.

Do we need benevolent, mostly Laissez-faire free market, dictatorship instead of incompetent democracy?

Democracy depends on its structure to choose the President, but also requires a good and strong President. Authoritarian depends on a good and strong leader, but also requires a structure to select such a leader. This is simple common sense. To say one is better than the other is not wise.
Look at it this way. Democracy involves the whole population, many are non committing. But the authoritarian involves only the committed ones. This deserves our investigation.

Probably you guys do not know yourself well enough and got it somehow wrong why USA succeeded. Your model may have been oversimplified, yet, you have been so vigorously selling it to other countries but taking no responsibility for many disastrous consequences. From such behaviour, people can only doubt your purpose being nothing but self serving.

Regarding dignity politics and putting people back to work instead of a universal basic income: Mr. Fukuyama is ignoring the fact that wages haven't grown since the 1970s, so even people who are working aren't able to keep their heads above water. Work gives us dignity, but where is the dignity in worrying about how we're going to put food on the table or which bill should I pay, the rent, the credit card, or the water bill? Where is the dignity in being forced to work for Amazon at a wage that requires another job and food stamps in order to get by, and then, even barely? How does entrepreneurialsm take root and grow in these conditions? To participate in the economy, citizens require liquidity. To participate in the political economy, citizens require a voice, and representation that is accountable. Technology can enable the distribution of Universal Basic Income. There is no reason in the 21st century we continue to let 600 million people barely subsist on less than $2 per day. It's a choice that humans made, and humans can make different, better choices that recognize the dignity of all humans.

Diamond at 18:50 that a "high quality democracy" needs transparency. Does he have a single piece of evidence to back that idea up? Or is it just a guess?

This Larry guy is so obviously enamoured with American "democracy" but at the same time so clearly blinded to its defects, that he is completely unable to contribute to the debate in any constructive way. His obvious denial of the problems of American democracy and on the other hand so obviously biased against other form of governance is pathetic.

He's a political scientist or political philosopher am sure what the distinction are though any discipline labelling itself as a science needs the paradigm of falsification
