    So 3 Things:
    1. The Bambino is 11g heavier then the Marlin. 1:23
    2. I'm wearing the new Orient whatever it's going to be called. You can get a better look at 12:13 Right now I'm calling it he Mako X.
    3. Just The Watch just released a Bambino Comparrison of his own. But comparing a V3 to a Guanqin GJ16034. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/0EeZy3oYYjk/v-deo.html

      Relative Time - I've seen the new Orient advertised as a Ray 3 on Amazon. I was thinking a nice sailcloth strap might wear well with it. And the black with red dial looks pretty cool to me!

      @@RelativeTime I understand. The Marlin case is nice, but the 8215 movement (a ~$85 non hacking movement) doesn't justify the price nor equal footing with an Orient in-house movement. Orient even signs their crowns now! It is a watch with great value proposition!

      I just got an Orient Sun & Moon and I’m amazed by the quality. Orient watches are worth more than what their often sold for. They often look far more elegant than some more expensive watches. A bambino is possibly next on my list.

    The Bambino is a superb watch. The only reason I don't have one is because I've got my Orient Star Classic. However I love that Bambino of yours. It looks very classy. The Timex would be a nice watch to have, but not at that price. Thanks for the comparison 👍

    Well done and spot on. Bambino is by a pretty large margin a better watch. I’d love to see a closer look at the small seconds and/or the gen 5 blue hands. Open heart does nothing for me. I don’t know why but I’d much rather see am exhibition case back than an open heart.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      I've seen a few open hearts that I like the look of, but there is something off about the Bambino version. I can't quite place what it is. Otherwise it sounds like most people want to see a small seconds.

    • @chadr8264

      Agreed. I think maybe because the cutout is of the balance wheel only and the rest of the dial is kind of plain? There are a couple out there like the Hamilton Jazzmaster that I think pull it off well. I think I just need a bit more than just the wheel to get into it.

    Without having seen this video prior, I chose that same strap for my Bambino V2 with the crème dial/blue hands. You are correct in stating the new strap does make it look more casual, thus adding to its versatility. I think the horrible straps Orient uses is actually a positive at their price point, their main focus being on the actual watch.

    • @robc8468

      I wish Orient would change Bambino to 20mm lugs, drill the lugs, ship it in a tiny box without any strap and drop the price $15 and let us do our own straps.

    I've had a lot of Timex watches over the years and still have two, so I welcome the prospect of the "return" of the brand as a major player. That said I have a tough time getting excited about the Marlin. To me it looks dated as opposed to classic. And slapping a foreign movement inside isn't doing much to burnish their heritage. Timex was known for their cheap 'n' cheerful in-house mechanical designs- they could 'take a licking and keep on ticking' after all. I fully understand that to design and build a movement in house totally from scratch when they haven't done so in decades might cost a billion dollars and is impractical. But when Timex tries to go upscale it's kind of a situation like the Kia Stinger where even if they hit a lot of the notes right they still seem to get ridiculed for even making an effort.
    Realistically I'm more interested in the cheaper Timex watches and would be fine with them 'staying in their lane' and leaving the automatics to the Swiss, Japanese and Germans...but that's just me. I wear my Weekender a lot as my work watch (with the addition of a silicone band). It's rugged and cheap enough that I don't have to worry about it.

    I think you nailed it. The Bambino looks like the better watch, but Timex has such strong sense of nostalgia attached to it for some people it'd be the preferable option. I vote for the small seconds next, that's the Bambino I really wanted but wasn't willing to pay for as it was brand new and significantly more expensive when I bought my v3. Thanks for mentioning my video!

  • @tonywong8134
    @tonywong8134 4 роки тому +3

    I personally never had a problem with the Bambino watch strap. It was cheap, but I thought it was good considering I paid $100 for the watch. But generally, Timex tends to have pretty good leather straps in the $60-$200 price range.
    If I had to pick, I like the Bambino despite its case size and lug width. The relative thiness and my experience with them has been great. I've had great experiences with Timex, but I don't like domed acrylic crystals. I don't mind the movement inside the Timex but the date window is utterly useless if it's that size. I have very good, almost microscopic eyesight, and even the window is easy to miss. It's even smaller than the Orient's which is small already IMO (especially on a watch its size). I feel if Timex got rid of the date window it would make it much more compelling for me.
    The Marlin, if priced around $150-$170 I would definitely consider it over the Bambino.

    Even though this was done 2 years ago, I wish to make a comment.
    I bought the Orient Bambino which reminds me of the Omega Seamaster 1957 also a Seiko Presage Cocktail (without the textured dial), it's a stunning watch. Timex cannot get close to these for quality or looks. The Bambino is above all dress watches in the price range of £1 - £250, if they're not then please let me know so I can go buy it. I much prefer a solid screw on back than a more fragile exhibition back, especially when the movement isn't that great to look at, even if it's a workhorse movement. The Bambino is a highly sophisticated also very highly rated by many, many watch affcianardos.
    Bless

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for comment, I think you are 100% right about it being the best watch in that range. If you want to spend more your best bet is either a cocktail time, or find a great deal on an Orient Star.

    Bambino any day. I wear my bambino gen2 in shirt and shorts. Just like I wear my divers in coat and tie. In my opinion the larger size of the bambino makes it more casual looking than most dress watch... which makes the bambino a more versatile everyday watch.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      That is a good point. I think a lot of it for me was the stock strap. The black crocdile leather just didn't look casual, too formal looking for me. The new one I got, not so much.

    If you want your father's watch, then your watch is the Marlin.
    Dad wears the same watch to work, to a baseball game, to mow the yard. He doesn't care or know that it is a "dress" watch. It is in every picture of him. He just owns the one watch. He hasn't ever checked the dial for imperfections, there are probably some scratches from moving furniture anyway.
    If you want that watch, then your watch is the Timex Marlin.

  • @maxschmidt666

    The silver-ish Timex Marlin shown in this video was the only watch so far that I was stunned looking at it. No other watch ever had this wow-effect for me. (I guess its needless to say here that I am no watch enthusiast ;) )
    So the choice was easy for me.

    I have a soft spot for Timex watches. My first watch was a Timex, as were all of my watches until I was in my twenties. I now have a $60 Expedition with a cream colored dial, and I just love it. I always wanted a Marlin, but never got one, and if they keep on selling for over $250 CDN, I never will. I own a Bambino v4, which is gorgeous, and there are so many Orient watches for far less money that blow away the new Marlin. However, if sanity prevails, and they come WAY down in price, I may have to get one for nostalgia's sake.

I would get the marlin as well if it was 50-60 bucks cheaper or if they but a better movement in the case. I’m probably going to wait a year or so and see if Timex improves upon the Marlin. I still think the Marlin is a nice looking watch regardless.

    I wear a V3 Gen2 with blue dial. I love it. My other watches are much more expensive but the Orient has a place in my heart. The unrefined swing of the pendulum which feels utilitarian and robust, and just how thin it feels regardless of the domed crystal. And as a Bauhaus style lover, it’s perfect for me, especially at the price.

    thx for this good review. recently got the bambino "Bauhaus" with grey sunburst dial. About 150.-€ at ama I think. Quality, technology and design is,quite good, even compared to a mid price watch.
    But personaly for normal sizes I would prefer 36-38mm as a dress watch.
    Therefore I have to get used to my 40.5mm Bambino.
    For Flieger and Diver Watches 40mm are suitable than for dressers. In former times they were even smaler, had a nice Omega Seamaster De Ville at about 36mm a dresswatch before I gave it to a famiöy member. That size met my expectations a bit more 😊

    I like wearing all my watches regularly so I'm not the biggest fan of the "occasion watch" When I see Roman numerals and an onion crown I immediately think 'dress up' or 'special occasion'. Not my speed. I actually prefer the newer Marlin with the California dial. Personally the Marlin would be a shoe in for me but Timex almost always loses me with the acrylic crystal. If Marlin will get cut the price to acceptable level, I think I can get one with black dial and silver case :)
    I am not fan of Orient or Seiko. I know it's the best value for money I can get, but I don't like them, 'couse many people have them. So I am looking for something "new", something not popular as much as Seiko/Orient are :)

    I would like to get the timed marlin for one reason. My Dad had one. He put it on a nylon NATO strap army green and it had a white dial very plain and simple with the date. I rember him giving it a couple of winds every morning. And maybe once or twice a month setting it. He had that thing for years. And like I said I remember him wearing that every day going to work to support us me and my mom God bless his soul. When he passed away I inherited the watch. But I can’t remember what happened to it I am extremely upset about that I remember I had it for several years and it was working up until the time we were I must’ve missed placed it . I am going to get the marlin And put it on a medium army green Neto nylon strap. I do think they’re a bit overpriced though they should be about 150 to 175 that would be more appropriate and I think they would sell more. At $250 some people are beginning not to be able to afford it.

    But. They need a few things done:
    1. Add hacking capability to the automatics.
    2. Mineral glass with a veneer of saphire if possible.
    3. Improve quality control .
    Those are a few starting points that will improve the watch.

    Nothing can beat a Bambino v2 with new Orient caliber with hacking and handwind. Bambino v2 tends to be more successful than some of Seiko Presage models considering lower price point. I have a Bambino v2 with cream dial, i was pretty amazed when i got timekeeping results which are pretty close to Eta 2836-2. Some + 10 seconds in a day when you compare with a Visodate were impressive.

    regarding Italian market there is difference in price of about 30% more for the Timex (average price for Timex is 200 euros , average price for Orient Bambino is 150 euros) , moreover there are much more models of orient Bambino than TImex marlin (at least in italian market I don't know in other countries) , so in my opinion is much more better Orient Bambino despite Timex Marlin looks also nice .

    Can't argue with your overall assessment; the Bambino is simply the better watch. I find the Marlin mechanical much more compelling. Not only is it $50 cheaper, but its case size and stylized arabics are more evocative of Timex's pre-quartz heyday. As for a future Orient review, I vote for the Bambino small seconds. The running seconds in a subdial is yet another nod to the horological past. It lends visual interest to the dial in a subtle, understated way. To my eye, the Bambino open heart is trying too hard. As always, thanks for another great video!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      Thanks! I agree about the open heart. There is just something off about it. I can't quite place whats off, maybe the open heart cutout looks too big for the dial. The Helios version looks a little better with it's gradient dial. But for some reason that's not called a Bambino.

    D'Accord. And I would usually vote for Timex. I wore an old one (~1980s) Into the ground. I don't they even had a model name for it. But my new Expedition (easy reader, Indiglo OE fabric strap) was not as hardy. The strap self-unravelled after a run of about two weeks. I replaced the band, but I think the crown snapped, and I don't think I was winding it too hard, or overwound it. I've never overground a watch before. So, though it would probably be smarter to just stomp on this one and replace it with something un-Timex. But I'm taking it back to the watch repair shop now. I'm pissed, and I detest throwing away a repairable watch without knowing whether the watch just failed, or I broke it.
    So, yeah, under these circumstances, I'd be game for a Bambino run. I've never broken an Orient before. I would hope that it's not just because I've never had one on my wrist.

    A Timex was my first serious watch as a teen so it will always get nostalgia points. I can't imagine Orients being many people's first watch (quartz Timex and Casio more likely). An interesting topic would be "childhood watches." What would get the next generation hooked? Brands aside, I agree that the Bambino is the better watch.

    Let me say this at the outset, I have 2 Bambinos and I am very happy with them. I have only seen the Marlin in print and specs. I will give the Marlin an edge in history, I remember seeing Marlins in the store. The Bambino gets a nod for having a movement that is made in-house, the Marlin has a Japanese movement. I would like to see and wear a Marlin before I make a judgment as to preference. As far as what I have seen and read, it is a personal choice. Timex has history and brand recognition, Orient is getting there.

The new Marlin is a nice offering from Timex, however, as you said.....the price of the Timex kind of knocks it out of the running for me, as there are some far better watches offered in that price bracket. I also have a small nitt with the short minute and second hands on the Timex. I feel that those hands should always reach the minute tracks, or at least come closer than those on the Timex.

    Nicely done and spot on comparison.
    Like you said, if the Marlin was say, $150 it would be totally worth it to pick one up just for the horological history. I'd say they could push that price up to $179.99 and still sell them like hotcakes. As it is, I see reviews of the marlin here and there, but seldom seeing anyone just gush over this watch. This movement just doesn't have the chops to demand $250 with a straight face.

Orient is only a darling for someone who wants to spend the least amount of money on an automatic, dumbed-down Seiko. This Bambino in particular could not look any worse, terrible use of the roman numerals, tacky strap, awful looking logo, etc. The Timex on the other hand can be dressed up or down, has a simple classy silver dial w/ date and at the very least doesn't look like a watch someone at an old-age home would be wearing, unlike the Bambino
